Heavier Hand In Defense Expected For Todd Bowles
January 11th, 2026The Joe typing here thinks it would be moronic to keep Todd Bowles as head coach and strip him of defensive playcalling duties at the same time.
The logic is simple.
Bowles is known for being very hands-off with his offense, and this year he proved he’s no taskmaster or problem-solver on special teams. So if Bowles is stripped of primary defensive responsibilities, then what would be the point of keeping him as head coach?
Actually, this Joe is confident Bowles will take a heavier hand in the Bucs defense in 2026. Why? Because Bowles said in July that he planned to give assistants more influence and power in the defense.
His comments came on the world-renowned Ira Kaufman Podcast. (Poor Ira; some fans are clobbering and insulting him relentlessly for not calling for Bowles’ scalp.)
Here’s the July exchange with Bowles.
JoeBucsFan.com: After all the offseason studying and all the steps you take, what’s the difference, however subtle, in Todd Bowles this year?
Todd Bowles: Probably turning more over to our defensive coaches as far as what we want to do. We’ve been heavy run-conscious on a lot of things and we get easily 2-to-1 pass to run. Obviously, we want to stop the run but we want to get more aggressive in the passing game.
So maybe Bowles gave assistants too much power this season and they proved incapable?
Three defensive assistants left the building last week: cornerbacks coach Kevin Ross, safties coach Nick Rapone and defensive line coach Charlie Strong.

Don’t underestimate anything coming from OBP
Right about now they are like the youngest kid at a birthday party playing musical chairs…
January 11th, 2026 at 2:41 pm
Gonna be a rocky road until Bowles is gone. Glazers couldn’t have screwed things up more this off season if they tried. Licht better find lots of new starters on defense.
January 11th, 2026 at 2:44 pm
So u watched the defense look like shil and did nothing. Ya ur fired. Again no accountability with this guy. He cant evaluate anything.
January 11th, 2026 at 2:44 pm
At some point during the one and seven stretch, did he think he needed to get more involved in the defense? Especially as the defensive coordinator?
January 11th, 2026 at 2:46 pm
Todd’s idea of coaching defense is the press conference after the game when he says” It’s on the players”.
January 11th, 2026 at 2:46 pm
’27 season can’t come soon enough.
January 11th, 2026 at 2:50 pm
I’m curious when some in the media will finally learn this dude is just talking outta his a$$ & has zero answers on how to coach D in the modern NFL. The league has passed him by & he’s stuck in nuetral just spinning his wheels, trying to convince everyone that all’s good & the team will arrive at their SB destination any minute.
January 11th, 2026 at 2:50 pm
Lmao, this means it will get worse.
January 11th, 2026 at 2:50 pm
The DB’s were eaten alive in 2025 because there was little threat from a pass rush perspective.
Until the Bucs FO fix the pass rush by going and getting a real #1 Edge threat to pair with YaYa, Kancy & Vea (the 50% of the time he’s on the field & 50% of the time playing at 100% effort)….It’s going to be groundhog day week-in & week-out with Bowles soft zone coverage scheme.
IMO, If you have to scheme up sack potential with LB’s, S’s & CB blitz calls…It’s a clear sign you don’t have the horses up front! So, go get the horses up front!!!!

January 11th, 2026 at 2:54 pm
Maybe someone should have woken Bowles up over the last 10 weeks of the season so he could have tried that approach.
Anyone else notice how he never has a play list like every other coach, and you never see him say anything? I don’t think his headset is really plugged in, honestly.
January 11th, 2026 at 2:58 pm
I hope the blazers are sitting around the TV watching Jacksonville kick ass
January 11th, 2026 at 2:59 pm
None of this makes any sense….>Bowles was HC responsible for everything….his defense was atrocious. His offense wasn’t much better.
He has fired the OC….ST coach….some others…..everybody but himself.
All we can hope for is a much stronger offense with a new OC. Better ST….
Perhaps a good draft and a couple of key FAs…..
The schedule looks brutal.

STOP THERE!!!!!
January 11th, 2026 at 3:15 pm
That logic DOESN’T track….
If that were the case then at some point in the losing half of the season, IBS should have reclaimed control of defense… That right there should have gotten him FIRED being so incompetent he LET the Bucs lose when supposedly he could have change things and won…. I would hope ‘this’ Joe was smarter than that…
January 11th, 2026 at 3:17 pm
Watching these GOOD teams in the playoffs just expose how far off the Bucs are to being in their category…
January 11th, 2026 at 3:18 pm
Touchdown Jaguars!
January 11th, 2026 at 3:19 pm
Right. Todd Bowles is only the head coach. His assistants just had too much power. It’s all their fault.
January 11th, 2026 at 3:19 pm
If your defense hasn’t been good, you want it to be better.
Presumably then, you put it in the hands of who you thought could improve it.
And it wasn’t you. Now, the opposite?
Hmm
January 11th, 2026 at 3:21 pm
The defense wasn’t working, you gave away power.
The defense was similarly as bad and now the solution is to take the reigns again?
January 11th, 2026 at 3:21 pm
Nothing to look forward to next season. Jason licht and Todd Bowles are boring as hell and sooooo bad at their jobs
January 11th, 2026 at 3:23 pm
Joe, that does make some sense. Bowles defense was never a shutdown defense like the Bucs was with Sapp, Brooks, Lynch and Barber but they were decent. This year they went from decent to atrocious so, I can believe something of the sort went down this year
January 11th, 2026 at 3:23 pm
Last year was the time to change
Now that necessary change will not happen until the 2027 season
and unless the draft hits it out of the park the Bucs will be officially rebuilding.
January 11th, 2026 at 3:24 pm
Charlie Strong is well practiced at taking money under the guise of being a coach, especially in the Tampa Bay community.
January 11th, 2026 at 3:27 pm
He’s going to make sure corners play 15 yards off the wideouts instead of 10, and get the defensive tackles as well as the ends to drop into coverage.
January 11th, 2026 at 3:31 pm
Watching Jaguars you realize they are way better coached. Glazers keeping Bowles is big mistake. This franchise going to be set back a decade cause of that decision. Everyone in the division is going to gain ground while we go backwards.
January 11th, 2026 at 3:31 pm
What a difference good HC makes. Bears were ferocious throwing their bodies at Packers in 4th quarter last night. Bucs were so lifeless all season. Based on majority of posts here 90% of JBF readers can’t stomach a return of Todd Bowles. It is going to be a hard sell to Bucs fans for another season of Bowles and his passive staff.
Just watch your aTV and see these coaching staffs interact with their players. Fired up coaches get fired up players.

You are correct. So fire him as head coach and problem solved.
What’s with this poor Ira nonsense. He brought the criticism on himself by taking a position counter to more than 90% of fans with no reasoning to back it up. I say “deal with it, Ira.”
January 11th, 2026 at 3:41 pm
Everything Todd says are just empty words. Literally nothing he claims he’s going to do comes to fruition. Nothing changes, nothing improves.
January 11th, 2026 at 3:46 pm
Why. Did. We. Let. Coen. Go?!
January 11th, 2026 at 3:48 pm

Go Jaguars. Eat snow Buffalo. Let’s see if Jag D can get a stop.
January 11th, 2026 at 3:50 pm
Interesting watching Hainsey start for the jags. But The narrative of letting Coen go needs to end. He was offered a contract making him the highest paid OC in the league. He chose not to sign it and do what he did with the jags. Which was his right. Obviously with hindsight everyone thinks we should have just fired Todd and promoted him but clearly that didn’t happen. But to say we let him go is inaccurate.
January 11th, 2026 at 3:52 pm
Well, well, well! Bob Hanssey is a starting center for a playoff team!
January 11th, 2026 at 3:55 pm
Jags look like a true professional NFL team. Bucs are looking like a community college team from Yeehaw Junction.
January 11th, 2026 at 3:55 pm
Oh, Ira had reasoning on how he thought the team would proceed, trust Joe on that. Some things sadly cannot be discussed publicly.
Joe realizes Ira’s personal assessment — or what fans perceive it to be — is what some fans are beefing about.
January 11th, 2026 at 4:00 pm
Joe … ‘Bowles is known for being very hands-off with his offense, and this year he proved he’s no taskmaster or problem-solver on special teams.’
There seems to be a fallacy in the argument for keeping him Joe. If Bowles as HC adds nothing to the offense and nothing to the S/Ts, AND the defense that he does oversee really sucks, what’s the point in keeping him at all?
January 11th, 2026 at 4:01 pm
Its just sad how virtually every bucs fan knows how bad this team is and how much worse they’re going to be next season because they brought this idiot coach back.
No worthwhile assistant coach is going to come here because of him.
And when they do fire him the Glazers will hire the towel boys assistant from Ball State to be the next head coach because he’s a bargain.

F@#k the fans is basically what the Glazers are telling us. Same as the Culverhouses did back in the day.
January 11th, 2026 at 4:08 pm
Just here to say that even though Liam Coen lost, he has already proven he’s a superior coach to Bowles.
Joe is also terrible at his job. If “some things can’t be discussed,” then what’s the point of the media? You’re supposed to be the voice of the fans. Pulling the *“I know something but can’t say it”* routine is nonsense. That kind of gatekeeping is exactly why the Buccaneers keeping Bowles made me give up on this franchise.
Saying Ira knows a couple of things he learned in confidence led him to believe Bowles would stay in his job is not exactly a crime against Bucs fandom. It’s the truth. –Joe
This entire organization is a joke. If something “can’t be discussed,” then don’t bring it up at all. Saying you have information but refusing to share it just makes you look unprofessional. Joe won’t argue the professionalism of Joe’s one-liner in a comment section. You are entitled to your opinion. It’s not like Joe wrote a report. ‘Ira knows x, y & z, but can’t tell you.’ In fact, one Joe doesn’t allow that kind of talk on Ira’s podcast. –Joe
So yeah—forget this team, forget Joe, forget Ira, and forget anyone who plays the *“I know something you don’t”* game. Either say it or keep it to yourself. Oh wait clearly you have an inferiority complex….

Watching the various playoff games from yesterday and today, it’s obvious that the Bucs are not playoff-competitive. I’ve been very impressed with the quality of play that almost all of the playoff teams have exhibited, and especially the defenses. Bucs have a LOOONG ways to go defensively to be competitive at the playoff level.

Jason Licht is TRASH and we will lose as long as this POS is GM
January 11th, 2026 at 4:41 pm
@steven – .449% winning % WITH BRADY!!!!!
The guys sucks. He is Mark Dominik that lucked out with Brady.
WHat has he done without Brady? NOTHING!
We had the GOAT for a few seasons. Does that give Licht a lifetime contract?
Yes or no? He sucks without the GOAT. So…right now…today…Jason Licht is a losing POS bc Brady is long gone. WHat have you done for me lately?
Licht sucks and fans supporting him seem to think Brady is walking back in the door…he is not. SO stop pointing to the Brady years as some kind of accomplishment…it’s not unless your name is Brady.
Jason Licht is TRASH
January 11th, 2026 at 4:42 pm
This is gonna be big egg in the face on the Glazers and I think this will end in Licht getting replaced as well.

Of course the answer to fixing the D is “more Todd”. It’s getting to be the Twilight Zone at one buc palace. Next they’ll announce David Shaw as OC.
January 11th, 2026 at 5:04 pm
buccintimeforchanges I’m with you man he did nothing to help this team @ the trade
deadline. I get he is decent with O line because he played it.
Really if they didn’t get BA & Brady he would have lost his job.
No one is holding anyone responsible mid season collapse. Do something bold
Like McKay use to do. After this year you need to start looking trying to get Burrows. So get this draft right now.
January 11th, 2026 at 5:15 pm
Old school Shaw will be named OC. Because none of the OC you guys dream of are coming here. Tell me what OC you guys want WHO HAS ACTUALLY IS A PROVEN PLAY CALLER that they have interviewed accept SHAW & Callahan. I know they have more to go, but I will assure you nobody you guys keep dreaming up.
January 11th, 2026 at 5:23 pm
Bottom line is draft n free agency needs to be all Defense except for couple of OL we had no pass rush this season. Bowles stands there glaring onto the field no emotion no yelling at screw ups just stands there like there’s another loss oh well better luck next game. Reminded me of his Jets coaching days look at results back then. He’s great DC not HC to much going on as HC for him to keep up with. He stands on sideline looks like he doesn’t give a crap. Fans will start that pretty soon as less tickets will be purchased you watch and see. Already have no faith in this next season unless they land some notable pass rushers to get some pressure on QB.
January 11th, 2026 at 5:30 pm
Bowles, as a dedicated DC, I still think would be quite good – IF he went back to what he did during the SB run, and that is play aggressive man defense. If Bowles getting more involved means he’s going to go down swinging – not just sitting back in zone, then I’m all for it.
When this defense went to aggressive man defense this year, which wasn’t often, it still looked competent. Yeah, it gave up some big plays, but who cares – it was getting sacks, turnovers, and stopping teams from scoring over the course of a game. The best defensive game all year (not counting the @Saints game) was vs Detroit where Bowles showed the could still pour on the pressure and make stops. Why in the world he went from that game, back to his passive zone, is beyond me – but the aggressive man scheme does work.
BUT, we had this exact same conversation last offseason, and we all saw that in crunch time, Turtle Bowles hid in his zone shell when it mattered most, and it failed pretty much every single time.
January 11th, 2026 at 5:33 pm
JMark. Keep moving the goalpost, people still wanted Bowles fired for making it.
January 11th, 2026 at 5:34 pm
@steven – I asked you some simple questions…
Do the Brady years give Licht a lifetime contract? Yes or No?
Is .449% a good winning %? Yes or no?
If you had any coach or GM after 12 years and a .449% would you keep the loser on staff? Why?
January 11th, 2026 at 5:39 pm
He scared to play man press. I played corner/SS in college. You keep your eyes on your man. I have seen everyone of our corners looking back @ the qb. So where’s your man if you looking back @ the qb in man coverage.
My college coach use to say, when he went to pro camps how undisciplined DB’s can be
In the Pros. There’s your big plays. Lean on your fundamentals.

You sound really ridiculous.
Would you not rather have Coen as HC over Bowles?
Please let us all that with a straight face.
Coen just took a 4 win team to 13 wins. He has a young team believing, playing with passion and he understands how to manage a game, the QB and the clock.
You just sound butt hurt that Coen left, or your one of those Bowles apologist..hard to believe you all still exist.

Sb-LV says,
I dont want Bain, his size won’t translate to the NFL.
Wtf are you talking about??
Not sure if someone mentioned him in the comments or you just decided to randomly post that.
Bain is the top edge rusher, plays the run as well as the pass and is 6’3″ 270. Please tell me how that doesn’t “translate”
Im not sure why I bother reading most of these comments. You can literally get lose brain cells reading most of them.
From this ridiculous take to folks trying to bash Coen for losing a close game in the PLAYOFFS. Just dumb

BUCCINTIME SPEWED:
– I asked you some simple questions…
Do the Brady years give Licht a lifetime contract? Yes or No?
Is .449% a good winning %? Yes or no?
If you had any coach or GM after 12 years and a .449%
NO lifetime contract, but putting together a roster that won a superbowl should give him plenty of time and we’ll deserved.
You know, the roster with plenty of drafted players mixed with FA Licht brought in like Brady, Gronk, Brown, Shaq..
You sound young, so I’ll excuse your ignorance. You must not have been around when the Bucs had decades of double digit losing seasons.

Absolutely wrong approach. He needs to hire a DC. If Todd Bowles wasn’t acting DC this season, then who was? He has been the DC the entire time he has been here. So, logic would dictate he has not been able to give the D the attention it needs because he is the HC. Ask Ryan Day how calling the offense worked out for him and Ohio State against Miami.

26/27: The lost season.

@fanofdabucs – so bc the Bucs sucked in the 80s we should settle for .449%
How much time? It’s a simple question that you tried to dodge.
12 years? .449%
That sucks. Why are you losers afraid of saying Jason Licht sucks?
He got pics of you? Seriously? Brady CHOSE Tampa after SF said no. Good lord I am embarrassed for some of you. Saying Licht brought in Brady is fing embarrassing.
Licht was the architect of the SB? If so, why can’t he sniff another one without Brady? Weird.
Y’all a bunch of losers. Losers.

Lightning won’t strike twice.
no Brady, no SB
I don’t see any Tom Brady’s on this team.
FIRE THESE LOSERS

There’s not a single quote from Bowles either now or back then that inspires even a shred of confidence.
In fact, every quote just illustrates the same exact thing:
HES CLUELESS!!!!
His defense sucks when he’s heavily involved and sucks when he differs to his handpicked assistants. This team is going nowhere with him at the helm and we all know it. Only chance is lucking into another amazing OC, who no doubt will leave at first chance while we stick with the toilet Bowles some more.

Pass rush, pass rush, pass rush!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
January 11th, 2026 at 7:08 pm
Different season, same story,…. or should I say same excuses. Knowing Bowles and Licht they will get another free agent edge rusher like Reddick. The guy will have like a 2.5 sack average. Once signed they will hype the guy up, congratulate themselves, and then call it a day. Next season will be more of the same – 27th ranked defense. Soft zone and a defense that gives up TDs on 3rd and 28. depressing really.

Was he not the “Defensive Coordinator” in 2025? Does not mean he takes all the input from position coaches and “coordinate” into a cohesive defensive plan!?
January 11th, 2026 at 7:49 pm
I wish we had a GM like John Lynch and owners that weren’t greedy
January 11th, 2026 at 8:27 pm
So there is a reason Todd’s still here even though he sucks but we can’t share why. Thanks Joe got it.
