David Shaw Interviews For Offensive Coordinator Position

January 10th, 2026

Former Stanford coach David Shaw.

One of these days, someone is going to have to sit down and explain to Joe in detail what the appeal of David Shaw is.

David Shaw succeeded Jim Harbaugh at Stanford to begin the last decade and had some decent years in the soft PAC-12 conference in the post-Pete Carroll vacuum. It helped that Shaw had quarterback Andrew Luck and some running back named Christian McCaffrey.

After those two guys left, Stanford went downhill fairly fast. Starting in 2019, Stanford, under Shaw, slipped. Basically, he was a West Coast version of Mike Norvell — some good years when he had the quarterback and players around him and stunk out loud when he didn’t.

But man, the way the national pen and mic club swooned over Shaw, you’d think the guy was the next Nick Saban. Every time NFL Network had to have a college football voice for some reason, it turned to Shaw.

NFL Network draft coverage? There was Shaw at the anchor desk. Why?

Of all the coaches to choose from, why him? Because he recruited America’s Quarterback, Jameis Winston?

And it seemed every NFL opening, if the reports had to include a college coach for the favorites list, almost always it included Shaw.

Joe never understood why Shaw deserved all this run.

And here we go again, albeit locally. The Bucs announced Saturday they interviewed Shaw for the opening at offensive coordinator.

Man, this Shaw must have a helluva agent or his agent must be tight with a ton of influential people. Also, the Bucs interviewed (try not to laugh) Arizona Cardinals quarterback coach Israel Woolfork for the same position.

If you or anyone you know has the goods on why Shaw gets so much run for having a mediocre, up-and-down career, feel free to fill Joe in.

  1. I Remember 21 Says:

What a bunch of losers we’ve interviewed so far. None of the big names people wanted. Next season is going to be a disaster. bowles still calling the defense and some loser nobody has ever heard of calling the offense. Probably doesn’t want to hire anyone that could usurp him. Glad I won’t be watching. I’m sure I won’t be the only one.

  2. JimBobBuc Says:

Are the Glazers just being cheap or are they planning to tank next year?

  3. Sal Volatile Says:

Bowles knows that if the new OC is a success the owners will not hesitate to replace him with that man. Bowles is protecting his own interest. I think he believes he can skate through again cause the owners like him. It’s like a child ” It’s all his fault not mine.”

  4. Lt. Dan Says:

I think at this point, Shaw would be a very Glazer hire for the OC position. Head coach in waiting too for when Todd leaves. Thanks Glazers.

  5. Lakeland Says:

What’s wrong with interviewing as many candidates as possible?

The team is basically going through the motions
They are interviewing people that’s AVAILABLE for interviews
As teams start losing in the playoffs, better candidates will interview
And all of these interviews are VIRTUAL interviews

They are threading in the right direction
Let the people do their jobs, and quit criticizing every move they make

  6. CyberDilemnma Says:

For the record, every OC stinks when they do not have a QB and pieces around them.

  7. Lakeland Says:

They are looking for a offense coordinator to get Baker back on track

An a potential HC in waiting

  8. Nutterbuccer Says:

Rooney rule apply for coordinators? If so checks the box.

  9. Inwoodjeremy Says:

Nothing wrong with interviewing as many people as possible. Somebody may bring a Idea or share insight. It’s the person who is hired that matters.

  10. Daryl Green Says:

Ok I can get behind this 👏🏾👏🏾👏🏾👏🏾👏🏾👏🏾🤙🏾🤙🏾🤙🏾

  11. Jmarkbuc Says:

Is it not Bud Lichts job to arrange candidates?

Then exactly what is he here for? It ain’t the drafting of players.

  12. Slacker Says:

Are any of the coaching decisions looking at making the team better? Glazers retain bowles only because of money and now interview failures? Rub more salt in the fan’s wounds

  13. Bamabucs Says:

“Are the Glazers just being cheap or are they planning to tank next year?”

    Yes.

  14. Buccaneer Bonzai Says:

I don’t know why anyone would be against David Shaw.

No, he has not called plays. Neither did Coen.

But he’s got a lot of years of experience, and you can bet he’s learned from them.

  15. Buccaneer Bonzai Says:

He’s coaches Quarterbacks, WRs, RBs, and tight ends. That’s a lot of experience.

  16. Tampabaybucfan Says:

Does Rooney rule apply for Coordinators?

  17. Daryl Green Says:

@ Lakeland said: As teams start losing in the playoffs, better candidates will interview
🤣🤣 what OC in the playoffs going to make lateral move🤷🏾‍♂️ oh I see the McVay OC in title only who hasn’t called plays ? Who are playoff OC’s u speak of. I gosta know🤣🤣🤣 I forgot David Shaw yes I’m for that🤙🏾🤙🏾

  18. Lakeland Says:

All of these people that’s been interviewed are former NFL QB coaches

They are looking for a QB coach, as well as an Offensive Coordinator
They are looking for the best fit for Baker Mayfield
An experienced NFL QB coach, and experienced play caller
    .
They are not interviewing these guys for a HC position

  19. Kevin Says:

What’s so awful about interviewing David Shaw, I guarantee he would be a upgrade over the OC who was just let go, the man has vast knowledge of offensive play calling, smart move on Bowles part to test his football knowledge , I LIKE that he got interviewed.

  20. Aqualung Says:

We will hire someone who will suck but allows Belows to continue being the man.

  21. HC Grover Says:

    Manchester Buccaneers

  22. Popmike66 Says:

Well Joe, Bowles and the Glazers have been doing this for a couple years. I’ll clarify, they have brought in people must of us didn’t know or had darn near forgotten. It seems to have been somewhat successful. Coen or Canales wasn’t household names. Both are HC so I’ll just wait and see Maybe all this is a smoke screen, there are 6 teams or more looking for OC so maybe they have their guy in site and don’t want others zoom in until they can chat with him

  23. Jon Says:

Does it really require that much in depth explanation?

  24. Daryl Green Says:

    Joe he’s a good coach.
@ Stanford you have to have good grades to get in there buddy😊
    There ain’t any players
from your neck of the woods FSU, Florida, going to Stanford.
Great talent in Florida like Texas, Cali players. Stanford academics is different ball game. He’s the best interview thus far. Guaranteed.

  25. Stu Says:

    Rooney Rule…

  26. Ben Says:

Ya rhis should get the glazers fired up to keep Todd. Wow what trash are we inrerviewing

  27. Permanently Moderated Says:

As long as Bowles remains, it doesn’t matter who they interview. His defenses and game decisions will still suck.

  28. jcscycles Says:

This satisfies the “Rooney Rule”. And we cannot interview the active candidates yet.

  29. Bosch Says:

This search for the new OC is off to a very aimless start.

I think Maybe applies for head coach position🤣🤣🤣🤣👏🏾👏🏾👏🏾
Facts he’s better than Grizz and interview thus far. I waiting on Alex Van P.
The Glazers don’t have to pay him that much money. And yes everyone they interviewed will come cheaper than any coaches you all 🤣🤣🤣dream about.

    ++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++
    Yes…

Currently he is the Passing Game Coordinator for the Lions. He was the QB coach for the Raiders and the Ravens prior to taking the Stanford job. Also Ravens Receivers coach.

Been around, and been successful. Can call plays. Not a raw rookie, and successful at Stanford and the NFL. Would most likely stay and not bolt for another position after a year.

  40. BigZ Says:

I said in the off season we were back to being cheap. It’s pretty clear. Who the hell is Woolfork? AZ qb coach, the guy that ruined Kyler? Shaw is the type of hire the cheapos to hire.

  41. Hodad Says:

Sure, why not, he sounds great.

It just gets worse with every passing day. What a mess this team has become.

  47. Timon Says:

One word. Cheap.. looks like Bucs are not gonna surround Bowles with a superstar OC but a budget pick. Maybe the rationale is they won’t be expensive when the season goes sideways.

  48. Paco Says:

    @HC Grover
So, explain to me whats wrong with being “woke” again ? You bring it up repeatedly.

    Definition:
Woke is an adjective that describes being aware of and actively attentive to important societal issues, particularly those related to racial and social justice.

It’s kinda the opposite of ignorant and unaware, right ?
I do understand people (like you?) have tried to hijack the word to mean sex changes for everybody – LOLOL – but thats not what it means.

  49. Daryl Green Says:

🤣🤣🤣🤣👏🏾👏🏾 idiot there is nothing woke about this team.

  52. JustOneGame Says:

Cool story but who the hell have they interviewed for DC? Ohhh, I forgot we don’t need a new DC because this one will just coach it better so the players can play it better!

Real question though, if it takes players 3-5 years to sort of understand this defense, how in the hell are new coaches going to be able to master it in order to properly coach it before the first game?

  53. Daryl Green Says:

This is what these guys have in common
They all have been an NFL QB coach

The Bucs want to get Baker back on track
They are picking these guys brain during the interview
They need a QB coach for Baker

They are active, doing their job

  65. Richard Says:

Who the hell will sign with this team? The mistake of a head coach is already on the edge of a cliff…they’ll have to pay ridiculous dollars for even average talen…the entire franchise is a disaster in the making

  66. Bee Says:

Told you they’d look through the college ranks but to be fair they’ve had success there before.

Why would a talented OC come here? Joe pointed out Shaw did bad without a great QB, well what do you think he’s stepping into here?

Any OC that comes here and the offense doesn’t score 30 PPG then he’ll get fired regardless of what any of the players do. The OC will be the scapegoat. On top of that Bowles will probably get fired next season so the OC will be out of a job anyway unless he magically turns into Liam Coen.

Prepare yourselves for an uninteresting hire.

  67. HeartyDickerson Says:

Speaking of being cheap, it seems all these OC interviews are with previous QB coaches. I wonder if Glazers are looking to cut costs (like they are by not having to pay a DC) by consolidating the OC and QB Coach into 1 role.

  68. No Mercy Says:

Watching this rams game yeah fire Bowles

  69. Sean Says:

Joe are you going to trash every candidate you don’t approve? Mr Draft Johnny Manziel..lol

Shaw left Stanford as the winningest coach in program history, as his squads won 96 games and three Pac-12 titles and appeared in eight bowl games, including two Rose Bowls. He was chosen as the conference’s Coach of the Year four times, the most in Pac-12 history. He was on the Cardinal’s staff four for five years before taking over as head coach, tutoring wide receivers and eventually serving as offensive coordinator.

He may not be a great choice but the article makes him seem like Marcus Arroyo level bad.

  70. No Mercy Says:

Absolutely nobody as I already commented wants to coordinate under Todd Bowles and be pressured to score 40 points a games it’s not rocket science hello

  102. Rusty Shackleford Says:

  114. Bucs 95 Says:

  115. Daryl Green Says:

I’m telling you Shaw is the best so far.

  116. buc4evr Says:

Kind of sad really. If the Bucs just had a couple of good FA edge rushers, they could be playing today. Hope the Glazers are putting pressure on Licht to do something . Things are not getting better until the Bucs fix the defense , including getting a DC.

  117. BucsFan81 Says:

Who is running this team. These moves are very questionable. Keep Bowles and fire his staff. Interview washed up coordinator. They must really be planning to tank and get a number 1 pick for 2027 and do a complete re build. Nothing else makes sense.

  118. SBucs13 Says:

Unacceptable that the Panthers are playing this game like it means something. The Bucs would be down 31-3 at halftime. Shows you what a half decent offensive coach can do.

  130. Rod Munch Says:

It would be beyond stupid to change the system – Baker excelled in this system under Coen, and it’s a great system. You don’t blow it up over one moron play caller.

  131. FortMyersDave Says:

Guys the Panthers are still the Panthers, the same bad team that let Todd Bowles beat them last week, they could not beat Bowles in a pressure situation. McVay and Stafford are basically pulling a “Bowles”, allowing a bad team to hang around, nothing more unless the Rams lose, remember McVay almost quit after that 2022, 5 and 12 season a loss here could make him think about it again. That said, yeah the Bucs would be down 27-10 in this game and might cover the spread with a late Baker TD to pad the stats after McVay went into running out the clock…..

Shaw is a Rooney rule interview and 132 is right, dude has a dome just like Charlie Brown. BTW, Bucs special teams this past season was kind of like Chuck trying to kick a football with Lucy as a holder. Bowles kept trusting his ST coach and he acted like Lucy week after week expecting a change, just like Todd and his bad D schemes.

  132. Rod Munch Says:

Amazing how everyone complained about how bad the Bucs defense was – yet in both games vs the Panthers, the Bucs defense gave up less points than the #1 ranked Rams defense gave up in just 3 quarters.

  133. Rod Munch Says:

Just think of the pickle the Rams would be in if they knew their offense wasn’t capable of scoring more than 20 points a game despite a staked offense.

vs Redskins: Defense makes a 4th quarter goal line stand, Baker gets the ball back, can go up two scores and put the game away… and Baker chokes, fumbles the ball, loses the game.

Well actually he did pull a Manning, since Manning in his first year in the Arians offense threw 28 INTs.

Even Tom Brady threw a career high in INT in his first year in Arians offense.

That’s by design, it’s high risk, high reward.

Plus, not to mention, Baker lead the NFL in INTs last year, even as he had the best career of his life. People focus too much on INTs, what you should care about is how many points you get for all those turnovers, because the entire point of football is outscoring the opponent.

You win the game by outscoring the opponent. Literally, look it up, winning the stat column means nothing when it comes to your record in the standings.

I don’t care if you throw an INT at your own 10 yard line so long as you end the game with more points than the opponent. Thus my point.

What you can’t have is that Miami game, where Baker turns it over 3 times, while scoring 10 non-garbage time points. But note, the focus isn’t on the turnovers, it’s on the points. If Baker turned it over 3 times, but got 31 points, then the Bucs win the game.

    ——-

When did Baker ever put up 31+ points and lead a last second TD drive, only to have the defense collapse? I don’t recall that.

What I do remember is Baker throwing for 122 yards, an INT, then have the ball on a game winning drive and on 4th and 4, throw a 3 yard pass.

What I do remember is Baker up by 14 points in the 4th quarter, then throwing one of the worst INTs you’ll ever see, then missing wide open receivers on simple unpressured throws that would have ended the game.

What I do remember is Baker, down by 3, with a minute left, two timeouts, already in FG range, forcing a ball to Evans who wasn’t open that is intercepted, meanwhile on the other side of the field Baker had two guys wide open with no one within 15 yards of them.

What I do remember is Baker turning it over 3 times and only putting up 10 points.

I honesty think it would be a great pairing, because they’re both streaky, and you could just play whoever gets hot.

Also it would be a legit way to push Baker, unlike this year where Teddy was zero threat to him.

They’re also different QBs, as Winston is more of a traditional stay in the pocket deep ball passer, as opposed to Baker who is more about the short quick passes, but he can also keep plays alive and a threat to get some yards on the ground. Just think if the other team didn’t know who was starting – they’d have to prepare for both.

Outrigger, they called about Harbaugh and it is likely that Bowles knew he was safe before Harbaugh got launched so yeah, I think the Bucs could make a phone call if either LaFleur or Tomlin get axed but if it comes down to coin, the Glazers will not pay. They are tied up in paying 3 coaching staff across the pond at Man U to the tune of $40 million plus, they still own 49.9% of the club and have a voting majority on decisions there. Seems like Man U finances are giving them the excuse/reason to go cheap in Tampa which is likely why Bowles was not launched.

The issue with getting someone up and coming, is going to be the fact that everyone knows Bowles is basically on a one year deal. It is more likely than not, that you’re only going to have one-year on the job, then get fired. That’s why the Bucs might get stuck with a retread.

Also, for Bowles, with his job on the line, he probably wants a boring, safe, experienced pick.

But we shall see, and it’s worth noting, Bowles knocked it out of the ball park with his previous two OC picks – and I really wonder if he truly wanted Grizz or if he was sold on continuity. But I know when listening to interviews with Grizz, in particular the one he did with Ronde, the guy sounded like a moron who just spoke in buzz words, I was really unimpressed. In fact, if Bowles did want Grizz, he wouldn’t have fired him after a year – in particular since reportedly the Glazers didn’t mandate any changes.

Bowles knew it was coming last Monday as he dissed the kid in his presser, saying that the kid can take what learned this past season and use it in his future endeavors while Bowles bragged about himself winning 3 straight division titles but no mention about the team…. That made me realize that Bowles is not a man of the people, he is just looking out for himself.

Bee, a lot of head coaches should have figured out by now that channelling Dan Campbell is not always the way to go. It burnt Canales today and now the Bears are paying the price. Campbell is the total opposite of Bowles, almost reckless in his risk taking but then claiming to be 100% accountable for his mistakes in pressers but then repeating said mistake over and over again, kind of like a guy named Baker Mayfield.. Bowles never acknowledges his mistakes, he just keeps repeating them..

I’m sure it was Bowles who got the last say, but I think they were telling him to keep the same scheme and playbook. Which, BTW, was the right call, but they should have picked someone else in the building.

I know personally I became very concerned when he started talking about how he’d “improve” the offense by throwing it deep more and implementing college plays. Then the alarm bells really went off when I read the articles all talking about smart he is. If he was really that smart he wouldn’t have changed anything. I think he got a raw deal but he simply could not replicate what Coen did but I wonder how Coen would have done given all the injuries all over at first and then Baker being hobbled with no decent back up to spell him. Yeah Rod, people act like Canales had the Panthers running on all cylinders down the stretch. Their only win in was against Tampa. Just like Tampa’s only win since edging the Cards was against them. Dave Canales is certainly not up for coach of the year.

I think he did a good job considering how limited they are on offense, but he’s not even remotely in the same league as Coen.

Hey @Lakeland goes quiet and @Rod Munch pipes up – Yay!

“I was against Gizzad’s firing, so you’re telling me we can get much better on offense? Show me. The Offense overall was pretty decent.”

My brother, our offense was the Wyle E. Coyote mid-aid holding the “Help” sign

Oh no, there can’t be more than one person saying the same thing, so they have to be the SAME person? C’mon mane

  241. Aqualung Says:

[Aqualung: Joe likes you but has to caution you. Joe’s not going to tolerate your one-trick pony spamming act much longer. Bowles is here to stay for another year whether we like it or not. We get it: You hate Bowles. Fine. Your point has resonated. Joe’s not going to dig out your 20 comments every night out of the pending queue where you comment multiple times, often in the same post, “Bowles sucks.” We all get it. Joe’s not going to put up with that all offseason every day 20 times a day. Either stand down until September or diversify your comments. Joe doesn’t want to have to put you in timeout for nine months. Ree-lax. — Joe.]

  247. Rod Munch Says:

Aqualung, while Joe likes you – he doesn’t like-like you. But me, l love you. Deeply. I hope you see this so our relationship can bloom.

  248. purplebeard Says:

I agree with some on here, that bowles will choose friends and people who he doesn’t feel threatened by.

Yet Rod Munch can post 199 times a day that Baker sucks. Come on Joe

  250. FormerBucFan Says:

So Aqualung gets censored for 20 negative posts a day about Bowles but Rod Munch can post a 100 times a day that Baker sucks. Got it

  251. Ted Says:

When the Glazers are serious about winning again real changes will be made. Bowles will hire mediocrity because he is insecure and will not want anyone he deems as a threat to his hold on the HC position as a threat. He learned his lesson with LC in 2024.
