Could A Panthers Win Today Change Fan Perception Of Todd Bowles?

January 10th, 2026

The Bucs missed the playoffs. Carolina did not. But the Bucs beat Carolina in a must-win game last Saturday.

It’s a unique situation as both teams finished the 2025 regular season with an 8-9 record, but the Panthers won the postseason prize based on a three-way division tiebreaker with Atlanta.

At 4:30 p.m. today, the Panthers will host the Rams (12-5) in the wild card round of the playoffs.

That got Joe wondering whether Bucs-fan sentiment toward beleaguered Tampa Bay head coach Todd Bowles could shift slightly in Bowles’ favor if the Panthers win this afternoon. Maybe some outrage would be softened. A Panthers playoff run could lead some Bucs fans to believe the current Bucs team is closer to being a winner than many think.

Joe is not endorsing that line of thinking, but a Carolina win or postseason run certainly would be worth examining from a Bucs perspective.

And perhaps fans would be tweaked even more if the Panthers were to win this weekend and next weekend?

Yes, Joe realizes Panthers postseason success also could enrage legions of Bucs fans more than they already are.

    Go Panthers! Represent!

  8. John Mason Says:

Joe…..it won’t change the facts that Bowles defense is a total joke and has been going down hill for 3 years…We all see it….thats why the fan base is so pissed!

  9. Told You Says:

    NO!

  10. Evo Says:

No, because the Panthers already beat them once. It only shows the coaching gap between the two teams, because there’s no way we should’ve lost to the Panthers the first time. And we were not even competitive against the Rams. It just shows DC is a better coach. That’s my opinion at least.

  11. Told You Says:

    What a lazy post
So some fans may not agree with you and addressing that reality and how they might feel is lazy. Got it. –Joe

  12. bucnjim Says:

Rams 31-6 and the 6 are garbage at the end of the game. So no if anything it will make the entire division look weak. Especially the Bucs!!!!

  13. Brian Davis Says:

No. I saw our team collapse. I don’t care what Carolina does. Our season was a dumpster fire.

  14. Dbbuc711 Says:

    Nope

  15. Vegasbuc Says:

    Nope..fire Todd…

  16. Steven #55 Says:

The Panthers are a bad team in a bad division – the record and eye test tell us this.
We wouldn’t have beaten the Rams regardless

  17. Lt. Dan Says:

No – Todd’s history with the Jets and Bucs speaks a lot louder than the Panthers beating the Rams.

  18. Obvious Says:

Can’t stand the panthers, but the lambs are the sleaziest organization in all of professional sports, way more than the aints, and it’s not even close.

So I hope the panthers do get the upset and get a worse draft pick.

However, nothing will change most minds about Todd Bowles. Either you think the organization can do no wrong and he’s great, or you have functional eye balls.

  19. Newbie Says:

No. Gotta go bye bye. Take JL with you

  20. Defense Rules Says:

Whether the Panthers win or lose today wouldn’t change the fact that our Bucs’ defense played like dog doo this year.

  21. Baking with the next one Says:

Todd made sure we know who he really is. Todd quit on his players when he deferred his responsibilities to the captains of this team. SMH

Todd tattooed in the fans mind his lack of integrity.

Now you’re just plucking the scab, Joe.

  23. AlstottNumber1 Says:

Hearing Ira yell that Bowles is coming back with joy was a kick in the groin. Please tell Joe where that happened. Would love to highlight it here. Can’t imagine you’ll find it. –Joe

Carolina easily beats us twice if not for their terrible QB in game 18.

Bowles is stupid, incapable, disloyal, and arrogant. A deadly combo.

None of us care about the score of the Panthers game today.

We are all of us in a deep depression because 2026 is already lost.

2026 RINSE AND REPEAT. THE INSANITY CONTINUES…

  25. Lakeland Says:

It doesn’t matter who win these playoff games
The Bucs has a plan, and they’re going to stick with that plan

The Glazers has won two Super Bowl in the past 23 years
Only a few teams can match that

Atlanta, Carolina, Jacksonville, Detroit, Houston, Cincinnati, Cleveland, New York Jets, Buffalo, Minnesota, Chicago, Washington, Miami, Los Angeles Chargers, Tennessee, Arizona, Dallas, San Francisco, have not won any since the Bucs won two. That’s more than 50 % of the league. I’m good with the Glazers as owners.

They have brought championships to the Bay Area

  26. Show Me the TDs Says:

I often wish for a “laugh” emoji that I could use for some of these articles.🤣

  27. Tom Petty Says:

Also won’t change the fact that our offense was pathetic all year.

Wonder if we’re ever going to get a few articles with stats regarding the offenses part in our collapse ?

I’m rooting for the Panthers – no love for LA and I like a good underdog story.

  28. Bosch Says:

It’s all moot. This game will be over by half time.

  29. Davenport Says:

Please. Nothing will change the perception of Bowles. 7 seasons as a HC and a career loser. That’s exactly who he is.

Keeping him around and hoping for something different is madness. But, we all know that.

  30. SC Bucs Fan Says:

No. What would change my perception is if he actually hired a D coordinator.

  31. faspro Says:

    No, man…are you joking?

  32. Lakeland Says:

I didn’t Google anything, I’m going with my memory
I think I’m right about the teams that haven’t won a Super Bowl…….since the Bucs have won two. I’m with the Bucs all the way.

I know what this franchise is capable of

  33. Anon Says:

Seeing both coordinators we let go win in the playoffs will make fans hate Bowles more. Proving the success of those years were not in any part due to the guy we kept over them.

  34. Nate1976 Says:

No!!!! 6-2 then 2-7 Panthers win has nothing to do with it

  35. Lefty R Says:

    Bucs fans are not happy
I am not happy, but I don’t see the Glazers firing Bowles …. apparently they don’t want to do it!!!

    So in that spirit

Hire Mike McDaniel, if he is not hired as a HC! I don’t think he will be, but what do I know. Make him the Highest Paid OC
Hire Jonathon Gannon as DC, the Honey Badger loved him as a DC, not as a HC. That is good enough for me!!! The Honey Badger and I sorta agree… I think with better luck Gannon would have a better record as HC
    … Anyway

Also, hire Raheem Morris as the Secondary Coach….. Joe Bucs fan said he was a good secondary coach… well the Bucs need a good secondary coach!

If they are going to keep Todd Bowles surround him with good talent and I think the above qualify on this rainy Saturday!!! At least it is where I am!!

  36. SB~LV šŸˆ Says:

I sense a Iranian uprising among Bucs fans and One Buc Place!

  37. Buc1987 Says:

    Anon…true.

  38. kirk Says:

A Panthers win, will not change my perception of coach Bowles. I believe his time is done. If he were to hire a DC and just be a head coach, I can sit with that. I still think he is to stubbern to change, and will still call a lousy defence.

  39. Bucono Says:

    Fire Bowles

  40. sethery Says:

if they were to win the super bowl it would only alleviate the depressing level of embarrassment of end of the season slightly, but it would also make it worse because then the stinkin panthers would have won the super bowl.

  41. HeavyE Says:

If only we had a QB! Oh that’s right, he’s hurt…..BS!!

  42. Bucfanforever Says:

Nah, then it was even more important to have made it to the playoffs.

  43. Steven007 Says:

With the coaching decision seemingly made, the emphasis goes on Jason Licht. Now. Todd has proven that he can have an effective defense with the right horses. We didn’t have them this year. Primarily front seven. Will Jason get the players he needs to be successful? That’s the question. Linebackers and edge players. Free agency and draft. Get that combo correct? In the secondary plays much better as does the defense as a whole.

  44. Deeboooo Says:

    That’s a hard no Joe

  45. FormerBucFan Says:

    Keep circling the wagons Joe

  46. Jwg813 Says:

If anything it will make me dislike the Glazers. We got rid of 2 coaches that are in the playoffs in favor of a coach that cant adjust his old style defense

  47. Gipper Says:

No need to worry about Panthers win today. It will be a rout. LA is a solid team with a great HC.

Rams blow out the Panthers, Buc fans, that would have been us! Panthers slide by the Rams by three, Buc fans, could have been us! Tampa has to many arm chair fans with tunnel vision and for that will never see the real in front of their nose the multiple problems haunting the Bucs!

  50. View from 132 Says:

The Panthers could win 4 straight Super Bowls and that wouldn’t change the free fall the Bucs just had.

  51. Daryl Green Says:

🤣🤣🤣🤣 This article is goolash. Wait the Buccaneers has 2 Supebowls in 23 years 🤣🤣🤣 we had too give up two first round picks to get a coach to get over the hump, ohh by way with a veteran Qb (Brad) Bowl #1 Bowl two hired OG to get over the top, he couldn’t get Jameis right, so as luck will have it we get a Hall of fame qb and he talks his hall of fame TE to come play with him and as crazy as Brown was he was needed. Our defense wasn’t all that great that year we a good stretch @ the right time. You also had good leadership to overcome on Bowl#2 what plan do Glaziers have. That Gm would be toast if BA and Tommy didn’t save his ass. That’s why BA has so much clout. They tried again OG coach ( Harbs) they going to do again. Yeah The Buccaneers coach will be fired next year because he is garbage, and as a fan if u love your Bucs like I do you have to sit through this season watching bs and it will be bs. What we are waiting for Tomlin & Burrows to get Bowl #3 that seems to be the pattern. Glazers have plan yea I see the pattern 🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣 holy ish.šŸ¤™šŸ¾

  52. Coconut Doughnut Says:

In the battle of who sucks the most certainly the Panthers are the deserving team. plus they absolutely destroyed Atlanta.

  53. Inwoodjeremy Says:

The only thing that will change my mind about Todd is him winning a Superbowl. Until he wins a Superbowl I will always believe he is a mid. As a Buc fan it’s a glass half full. I would feel the same way with any coach that hovers around the .500 range consistently.

  54. Panhandle Buc Says:

Nope, Todd is still garbage!! Oh and the Panthers are gonna get curb stomped and further our points how trash our coach is!!

  55. JustOneGame Says:

If the Panthers get boat raced, do the Glazers rethink their commitment to Bowles?

  56. Ben Says:

We have had 4 years of Bowles. I gave the guy the benefit of the doubt so many times. Even last year when they decided to Coen walk, I said it was the right choice bc you cant just fire a 10 and 7 coach, but I have ALWAYS understood the issues that Bowles has and his limitations as a HC. I think we have hit his ceiling and it’s time to move on. Its hard to win the NFL as oer Bowles words, so these little mistakes he makes every game are not little, they are costing us games

  57. purplebeard Says:

It all a $ thing for the glazers. So why do we even bother with all this speculation?

  58. Just Saying Says:

How another team’s success would make anyone feel better about the complete collapse and failure of the Bucs is beyond me. Complete nonsense!

  59. Inwoodjeremy Says:

Bucs wouldn’t beat Rams if they got in anyway. Todd took over a Superbowl winning team to getting embarrassed and calling mercy. He’s got farther away every year he’s been the HC. He’s here to save money and feed his buddies.

  60. Tampa2ATL Says:

I think it would have some limited benefit nationally (vs our devout fanbase). However, it’s a moot point. No way Rams get swept by Charlotte pretenders.

because they are not that good. Ohh pull some Gm magic like McKay use to do
1st for Key, two first to get Jon. I will give two 1st right now for Joe Burrows in a heart beat and won’t look back.šŸ¤™šŸ¾

  63. PoundTheRock Says:

This is a ridicules story! Joe, is this just a rage baiting story?

Why would it change Bucs fans perception? The fans are enraged that Bowles was not fired. End of story!

  64. WalkdaPlank Says:

The last line in the article is the most poignant. If the Panthers win in the Wild Card it will only cause Bucs fans to seethe more, for losing all those second half games, including one game each to the division rivals. Not quite a 2011 Raheem level collapse, but more akin to a 2008 Chucky collapse.

  65. Adrnagy Says:

Panthers and jags are one and done. In playoff experience matters. Young and Lawrence
    Canales Coen have zero.

  66. Permanently Moderated Says:

Nothing will get rid of the stench that is coming from OBP.

  67. Aceofaerospace Says:

No. That doesn’t excuse the Atlanta loss, the New Orleans loss or the Miami loss. Lovie Bowels blows as a head coach and a has-been defensive coordinator.

No, it is not related. Todd is very bad

  74. Wouldn’t pay a single Buc to see this squad Says:

Is the next article that you post going to say that if the Seahawks win we are basically the champs because we beat them in the regular season? This is ridiculous.

  75. Wouldn’t pay a single Buc to see this squad Says:

    And Todd sucks

  76. HC Grover Says:

JBF trying to get the hype going early. You must forget Bowzo and start the Super Bowl Run for next year….Works every time for every NFL team and their Fandummies.

  77. HC Grover Says:

Joe give it some time to start the hype.

  78. Ugo Says:

    Tom Petty.
Our offense was actually middle of the road this season, with a rookie OC, 2 injured starting guards, some additional injuries on the Oline, our rb1, wr1-2-3, and ou qb being injured for a large chunk of the year.

Our defense, on the other hand, had 1-2 crucial injuries (Kancey and Walker), with an experienced “defensive guru” at the helm, yet it was still atrocious. There’s a reason we are talking about the defensive of the ball

  79. HC Grover Says:

    Will Canale Blunder likw Bowzo?

  80. Hodad Says:

All it would mean is we should’ve kept Canales like Coen over Bowles.

  82. buc4evr Says:

  84. HC Grover Says:

Rams luck out. Get WC v NFC South and the Shrimp

  85. K Says:

Panthers post season result is irrelevant. That said they are going to get destroyed. I care about our team being unable to succeed because of piss poor head coaching. We have zero chance to win a Super Bowl until we get a real head coaching.

  86. Addb Says:

    Panthers D looks like ours

  87. Bnasty25 Says:

It’s obvious we are way better than them…. it’s coaching.. watch the bills game especially on defense why is Nelson and Diaby covering Cook? Why does Vita drop into pass coverage? Trying to get cute instead of doing what our players do best

  88. HC Grover Says:

    Shrimps getting clobbered.

  89. Marky mark Says:

Lived in LA 13 years. Go rams

  90. Bnasty25 Says:

Maybe it’s a wake up call to our players that got comfortable with winning and not playing as hard. There’s mistakes but effort seemed horrible on defense. Mayfield wasn’t at his best but GD this play calling was horrible and I could predict what we would do

  91. No Mercy Says:

A panthers win? Are we serious with these topics?

  92. Jugheadfla2 Says:

  95. DBS Says:

I see we still have fans suffering from Winstonitis.
If we only had defense that could stop a parked car.

  96. eoschwartz Says:

Weak headline. Rams are wrecking the dunk and dunk Panthers. Looks kinda like the Bucs offense. Yeah why not pull in Chris Shula and Rams offensive coordinator or whoever is working for McVey. That’s the way to sell this team to Tampa fans. Just a solid defensive coach and bring an offense that attacks with the skills already on the team.

  101. Pewter Power Says:

No, not at all. Bucs would have been beaten by the Rams in the first round. Panther fans loud today, never heard a Bucs game, even a playoff home game even close to the volume today from the Panther fans, good for the kitties.

  102. Pewter Power Says:

No, didn’t renew my tickets, no sense of going until a new head coach is hired

  107. AMI_Chris Says:

A Panthers win would have no bearing on the Bucs’ inability to beat the Saints or the Falcons at home in December.

  108. FormerBucFan Says:

If Grizzard was a minority the narrative would be what a phenomenal job he did with a avalanche of injuries. NFL is a woke joke

  109. Let ā€˜em bake Says:

Todd is approaching a no-win season next year. If they fail, the perception is confirmed about his abilities. If they win, it will be attributed to the new coordinators, coaches.

  110. Coburn Says:

We lost what? 8/10 last games? One win at end of year doesn’t change that even if it’s the Superbowl winner. Anything CNA happen. Its about how you did during the second hand stretch

  111. pink Says:

Let me flip that on you, if Todd Bowles has two OCs that go onto win playoff games with bad teams after leaving Bowles behind, doesn’t that imply Bowles responsibility for previous successes is doubtful?

  112. pink Says:

Can Bowles win a playoff game, or even make it to the playoffs, without a coach who can do it themselves working for him?

  113. Bucs3 Says:

So Two Coaches the Bucs had are in the Playoffs

AND WE KEEP A HC sitting at Home

    Amazing

  114. stucbuc Says:

I’m praying the glazers change their mind and fire Todd. The more I watch the rams/panthers game the more I realize that TB is a very very bad coach. Bucs are going to be even worse next year. I don’t see any scenario them getting better

  115. Nprbuc Says:

The Panthers are playing with ā€œwant toā€ that we haven’t seen in months! The emotion they are playing with is something we could use. The coaches and ALL players are involved in every play. The guys on the sidelines couldn’t be more excited for the guys on the field. Compare that to Baker keeping us alive with outstanding scrambles and NO emotion from our sidelines. The Panthers deserved to take our sorry division. How about the Kitties and Jags going to the SB? Might that send a message to the Glazer boys? I’m praying.

    That makes zero sense.

Gruden won a superbowl with a lot of foaching changes. Many coaches come in to a team with all new staff and have winning records.

The truth is, until we know who the new staff is, until we know the results of free agency, the draft and trades, we don’t realistically know what the record will be.

  137. FortMyersDave Says:

In the end Bryce Young did not have it. Seems like McVay and his Rams have the Bucs and Saints figured out but they struggle when they travel east to Carolina and the ATL. McVay certainly can outcoach Bowles but Canales did well keeping his team in it though he did go Dan Campbell on too many 4th downs, he will have to answer for that. Like Tampa, Carolina is not good on 4th down offense.

  138. MadMax Says:

    I took the kitties +10.5

    And Houston -3

  139. HeavyE Says:

I guess all of you Panther fans are coming back to be BUCCANEER fans now!!! LMAO……SUCKERS!!!!

  140. BuccoBruce Says:

Panthers defense isn’t that talented but they stayed in the game because their defensive coach doesn’t run a scheme that doesn’t fit his players. Sure they gave up points and yard but their offense had a chance at the end to tie or go ahead. Bowels scheme got boat raced out the game in the middle of 2nd quarter.

  141. Outrigger Says:

Panthers could’ve won this game if they didn’t play a Todd Bowles style prevent defense on the last drive. Rams will not go far in the playoffs. They were unbeatable earlier this year but since December something has Ben off with them.

  142. David Says:

Their defense folded like the Buccaneers with one minute ago

I was hoping they’d win so they would drop 6 more spots in the draft!

  143. Aqualung Says:

    Goalkeeper with another shutout pending.

  144. FortMyersDave Says:

Agree with Outrigger on the Panthers’ D, it was a prevent choke job straight out of the Bowles’ playbook.

  145. Trey Says:

Honestly I think Bowles is the worst coach in the league. Not even joking anymore. I think he’s literally the worst.

  146. FortMyersDave Says:

Trey, almost all the other candidates for worst head coach in the NFL got fired. I guess I would say that Bowles and the Jets head coach would be the 2 top choices right now. On a national level the nod would go to Aaron Glenn because of all the negativity coming out of NYC about him; just like Tampa and Bowles but magnified about 10 to 100 times and the Jets finished 3-14….

  147. Oscar Says:

I don’t think it will change how a lot of people feel about Bowles. I do know that there are a lot of ignorant people that think the Panthers, Falcons and Saints stink. They are not good teams offensively but defensively they are all better than the Bucs. All three are certainly better coached than the Bucs were this season.

I had two thoughts watching that game. One was it should’ve been us hanging in there and threatening an upset against a Rams team that’s looking vulnerable. The second was I’m not confident it would’ve been that close if we had been there. Maybe the win over Carolina would’ve been the start of a return to form and we might’ve hung in there, but I don’t know. Just part of what was so disappointing about this season (my first as a fan with no post season play).

But to answer your question, Joe, I don’t think it would’ve changed my thinking about Bowles, but it might’ve softened my sense that it should’ve been us and not them playing. That they were as competitive as they were does make me feel like at least our win over them counted for something. I just don’t know why the mid season slump turned into such a slide this year. But that I pretty much accept the idea of the mid season slump is a problem. I hope all the coaching changes lead to real improvement next year.

I agree with some of the comments, it felt reminiscent to a Bucs game. If Canales won, it would have made it worse for Buc fans.

I guess all of you Panther fans are coming back to be BUCCANEER fans now!!! LMAO……SUCKERS!!!!

FatE, no, the results of the Carolina game has little to do with the the hot dislike for the Bucs head coach. The fact that he Glazers ignored the feelings of the fan base and kept this Inept combo of Licht/Bowels says all that people like me, that have spent $$ at the Sombrero and RJ and wasted countless hours strongly rooting for the Bucs, to distant themselves from this total dumpster fire.
