Falcons Beat Saints; Bucs Miss The Playoffs

To steal a Todd Bowles phrase, the Falcons coached it better and they played it better.
Atlanta (8-9) beat the Saints (6-11) this afternoon to force a three-way tie atop the NFC South. The Bucs (8-9) do not own the tiebreaker, so the Panthers are now the NFC South champs.
The Bucs’ four-season reign as division champs is over, something that seemed awfully hard to believe two months ago when the Bucs were 6-2 and entering their bye week.
But the Bucs proceeded to lose all their December games — against poor teams. In succession, the Bucs lost to New Orleans and Atlanta at home, and then Carolina and Miami on the road.
Sad. Really sad.
And now it’s time for Coach Watch.
Will Team Glazer dare to give a very unpopular head coach, Todd Bowles, a fifth season to convince fans he’s capable of leading a team to a Super Bowl? Most fans think Bowles woefully underachieved this year and runs a defense that teams too often abuse with second-rate offensive players.

One of the most disappointing seasons ever. 6 and 2 and to lose so many close games that kept snowballing down the stretch. We let 2 OC’s go in favor of the HC/DC. Last season we had top 5 offense and bottom half defense. The decision should have been a no brainer. AND within 3 seasons both of those OC’s (now HC’s) have their teams in the playoffs and division winners and we are out. Let that sad poopile sink in. I really hope there are major changes. Who I watch next season will depend on it. Very sad day.

Let’s examine the evidence:
1) Liam Coen hired as Bucs OC. Baker has career year and Bucs look to be on the rise despite a mostly mediocre defense.
2) Liam Coen leaves, Bucs become terrible. Jaguars go from garbage to great.
We clearly let the better coach leave the building. So why keep the inferior one? That would make no sense. Fire Bowles.

Sorry to see Baker will likely go through another Offensive Coordinator change. Josh Grizzard is not the guy and we need an OC/HC from either Rams, Seahawks or 49ers Offensive staff. Preferably one of the Kubiaks or my preference Mike Lafleur. Some directly from the McVay or Shanahan tree. We missed out on Coen. Let’s not make the same mistake in 2026.

I’ve never seen this team play this awful throughout its history. They were chickens running around with their heads cut off the whole season. Glazers are about making money and there are too many fans that will hurt them financially if the coach is not released. That’s literally not what happened.
The Saints took the lead, only to have the refs take it off the board, which completely changed the game.
The Saints, down a ton of starters, should have won the game and absolutely outplayed the Falcons.
Next season the Saints will win the NFC South, I don’t think there’s much doubt about it at this point, pending offseason moves.

I don’t feel strongly about Bowles either way. The real problem is with the players. The Bucs were 6-2 with the same head coach, so it’s not as if Bowles forgot how to coach.
No one here, not even the reporters, are at One Buc to watch them practice so we really don’t know what they do or how they prepare during the week. We do see how the players play during the games and with the exception of yesterday, the Bucs players haven’t been playing very hard the past 2 months. A coach can’t physically make people work harder. Some went into business for themselves.

Seems kinda disgusting that NOBODY in the NFC South had a winning record. That’s the 2nd time in the last 4 years that all 4 teams in the NFC South have had losing records.
And starting in 2022, the cumulative Won-Loss record of all 4 NFC South teams is 114 wins versus 158. That’s a winning percentage for our division of 41.9% during the 4 years Todd Bowles has been our HC. Doubt that any of the other divisions can top that.
In a more positive vein though, Todd was ‘the best of the worst’ since he has a 35-33 record (51.5% winning percentage in the regular season).

Bowles has a bad pass defensive scheme, Licht has terrible pass rusher acquisition/evaluation skills, and Baker tried to play hurt down the stretch but wasn’t good enough. Glazers screwed up not making the move for Coen last year. This sucks.

I don’t disagree…with hindsight certainly. Coen went from out of the Jax coaching mix…to a large raise from Tampa…a desperate ChaKa Khan owner throwing a pile of money while agreeing to fire Trent Balke…all I’m saying is I’m not sure the Bucs ever had a chance to match or beat the Jax offer.

Jason Licht was either too stupid or too loyal to keep Bowles over Coen.
He didn’t identify a winner in Coen. The decision was keep him and fire Todd.
Instead, the Glazers…the crappy owners that they are…gave extensions to Jason Loser Licht and Todd loser Bowles. Fish rot from the head down.
Brady gifted us a SB. It was a gift. It wasn’t earned by anyone in the building at OBP. No Brady, no SB.

Really like EE, Tez, Godwin, Evans, Bucky. I could do without McMillen, he is a Venus player and I am a Mars fan. Looking forward to see what happens next year with these guys.
That defense has some rising stars…. Parrish, Tykee but who really knows who is a good player based upon what dumbbutt bowles schemes out.
Tom Brady stated that Baker got dealt a bad hand, just maybe the Raiders will come calling. Always love players resurrecting the Raiders in years gone by.

D-Rome … ‘The real problem is with the players.’
I’m sure that’s partially true, but the real problem is not just the players, it’s also the coaches. They’re the ones who create the game plans; they’re the ones who decide which players will be in the game when; they’re the ones who call the plays; and they’re the ones who control the practice schedule.
SOMETHING changed this year after our BYE week (we were 6-2 at the BYE) and none of us know for sure what that was. Most seem to think it was related to the Lions’ game, but the game following that we did beat New Orleans 23-3 in their house.
Interestingly, in those first 8 games our defense had only allowed 178 points … 22.3 PPG average. After the BYE though, Bucs’ defense surrendered 233 points in 9 games … 25.9 PPG average. Not a huge difference in terms of average, but we won/lost the last 6 games (2-4 record) this season by 4 points or less … total difference for those 6 games was only 16 points.
Sadly our offense only scored 122 pts in those last 6 games (20.3 PPG) while our defense allowed 127 pts (21.2 PPG). NEITHER our offense OR our defense played well enough to get us to a winning season & the NFC South crown. A BIG part of that is on coaching D-Rome.

Coen knew he was better than Bowles and didn’t want to be #2 to him. He knew the clock was ticking on the team’s talent. He knew Jason wanted his cake and keep him till Todd retired in a year or two. That was insulting.

Wow, cherry picking some stats there hard Defense.
The Bucs defense gave up 21.1 points per game over the last 6 games, where they had a 2-4 record. That 21.1 points would be 10th in the NFL over that span, and 10th overall for the season if they kept that pace.
The Bucs offense over those same 6 games scored 19.8 points per game, including the garbage time score at Miami, or 18.6 points per game without it. That would be 27th in the NFL, again over that span and over the length of the season.
The nonsense about the defense losing games is fake news. The Bucs lost because of one person, and it wasn’t Todd Bowles.

I kind of wish I had not allowed them to auto charge my season tickets. This was hard to watch, and I don’t see the defense improving with Bowles as the coordinator. Atlanta and New Orleans both have better defenses. Heck I think we should have finished in the cellar. We were that bad. We barely won yesterday. I was there in the rain when Young converted another fourth and long against the Bucs, and then pulled within 2 points shortly after. The tickets are not worth much unless you pedal them to northern team fans.

The loss today was a blessing for the Bucs. It just saved Tampa fans more embarrassment and pain. The offense looks disorganized. At least with Brady we took chances and if the defense stopped them twice in a game we scored enough to win!! We are all tired of spending money and hearing excuses. If I performed like this at my job I would be laid off!!

You still have enough talent and draft capital to be competitive in an all around weak division. Whether you keep bowles or not the additions that need to be made remain the same. This Bucs season was Todd Bowles in a nutshell, his normal coaching life. Todd can not and will not make adjustments until it’s too late. He had to lose 7 games after being 6-2 to finally make a change. He’s a deer in the headlights. His team gives up huge plays and he stands there in shock, unable to move or do anything. It’s not that he’s antiquated or stuck in the past. He’s just not very smart and a terrible coach. It was nice to finally see some fire when he went on his profanity laced tirade, but it was misplaced, misdirected and only made him look smaller with a big belly.

Bowles you pick Baker Mayfield to be your quarterback even though you know Kyle Trask out played him in training camp in 2023 . You knew Baker Mayfield didn’t deserve the starting job that year and you and the Joe’s backed you up on that bad decisions and now Baker Mayfield himself and you literally lost 7 games in a row. Bowles with your bad play calls on defense and Baker Mayfield with his late 4th quarter picks you decerved to get fired and Baker Mayfield should be cut right along with you because you picked him as your quarterback knowing he didn’t earned the staring job. I told y’all it was NFC Championship or bust no more excuses and they failed.
