Bucs Waved A White Flag On Kickoff Coverage

December 12th, 2025

Chase McLaughlin had a different kind of night.

No mas!

Todd Bowles decided the miserable Bucs kickoff coverage unit would no longer pollute the team.

In the horrid loss to the Falcons last night, the Bucs kicked off five times and drilled each one into the end zone. That meant Atlanta started each drive at its own 35 yard line.

Speaking on his official team radio show last week, Bowles said he was strongly considering that kickoff strategy shift after more poor coverage Sunday to start the loss to the slimy Saints.

It seems Bowles eventually was convinced that was the safe move.

And it wasn’t enough to push the Bucs to victory.

Prior to tonight, the Bucs had among the fewest touchbacks in the NFL this season. Some teams — including good teams — actually have lots of them.

This is actually one move by Bowles that I’m OK with.

  2. RagingBrisket Says:

This was hilarious. Unfortunately, it never mattered because no one was covering their only passing weapon or bothering to tackle Bijan so one play later they were at midfield anyway.
What a joke of a football team

    Yes….that worked…..no 60 yard returns…….great…..

How about holding Kyle Pitts……only 5 yards (penalty)…..hard for him to get 166 that way!!!

  4. RagingBrisket Says:

Some would say we waived the white flag when we decided not to cover Pitts!

Licht should call the NFL front office tomorrow to announce that the Bucs are forfeiting their last three games – that Bucs Nation took a vote and agreed that this sort of continued humiliation is just too degrading. Show the fans some respect: forfeit the games – quit wasting our time.

  7. Colonel Angus Says:

Cousins still got 300yds while routinely starting at the 35yd line.

Todd Bowles has to be fired not as punishment but we have to get better and we must have a new defensive coordinator to do that. There is absolutely no way to move forward with this head coach. Tonight was the final straw. The Todd Bowles regime will come to an end finally. Its over.

  11. Popmike66 Says:

Special team has been that way all season, I am just shocked the defense is starting to play the same way

This whole clown show we have in Tampa is solidly on the Glazer team. They let two masters of offence bail just to keep this second rate head coach. From moronic time management to lack of wining coaching Todd Bowles is out of his league. If anybody think we’re going to beat the Panther’s twice I have a bridge to sell you….

  13. FortMyersDave Says:

The only silver lining is that this loss has to be the final nail in Bowles coffin. he has to be relieved of duties. I wish it was tomorrow but the Glazers will wait until the season is over. Can the Joes find out who is being whispered as potential new candidates over at OBP???????

  14. HC Grover Says:

BOZO finally makes the right call on one thing. ST so bad better take the duck. Do not fire the ST coach though. he is in the BOZO regime.

    Foote for interim agreed!

  17. Edward Meehan Says:

you can dress them up, but you cannot take them anywhere

  18. Newbie Says:

After OTAs, training camp, 15 NFL games, Bowles and this staff still can’t field an acceptable kickoff coverage unit? SERIOUSLY? Falcons dont have Devin Hester or Billy White Shoes Johnson.

Think about it like this – Bowles had MORE confidence in his INCOMPETENT defense than his HORRID SPECIAL TEAMS to allow the Falcons to start FIVE FREAKING times on the 35. Just brutal. HOW ARE YOU A HEAD FREAKING COACH IN THE NFL? THIS IS COACHING MALPRACTICE.

  19. JimBobBuc Says:

It was a long overdue smart move.

I said to do this 10 weeks ago. Clueless Todd strikes late again!
