The Tristan Wirfs Touchdown: The Aftermath

December 2nd, 2025

New passing game weapon?

So the buzz in the Bucs’ locker room Sunday afternoon after the win over the Cardinals was their All-Pro left tackle Tristan Wirfs  had maybe the highlight of his career.

Wirfs caught a two-yard pass from Baker Mayfield after a beautiful play design and misdirection from Mayfield. Mayfield looked right and most of the Bucs went right.

Because of that, the Arizona defense all slid to the Bucs’ right leaving a wide-ass open Wirfs to catch the ball at the goal line.

Here is what some Bucs players had to say about the touchdown play that had been installed, maybe 10 days prior to the Cardinals game.

Tristan Wirfs: I was kind of pumped about it [with the play being installed]. I didn’t think it was going to happen. It was fun.

Graham Barton: All week we talked about, “If it happens… ‘ — which it won’t. How are we going to celebrate?”

Baker Mayfield: I think [Wirfs] was more nervous; he hadn’t really been bugging me. If it was Luke [Goedeke], Luke would have been begging for it. Very different individuals there. … I couldn’t see where [safety] Budda Baker was on the backside there, so I kind of had to put a little mustard on it. But, he’s a good athlete – made a good catch.

Wirfs: It was kind of crazy. All week long [in practice] he was throwing me floaters and he kind of threw me a bullet. I was kind of nervous. I was like, “Don’t drop it.”

Barton: We never set anything in stone. [After the catch] I think we all just ended up hugging. Like all the linemen.

Luke Goedeke: I knew it was going to go well. ‘Yeah, here it is. Tristan, here it is, touchdown.’ I couldn’t be more happy for Tristan. Hope he puts that ball on his mantle. I couldn’t be more happy for him catching a touchdown. That’s an incredible accomplishment for any tackle in the NFL.

Chris Godwin: It was really cool. It was something we were working on for a little while. I think anytime an offensive lineman scores it’s sick. They do all the dirty work and rarely get any of the recognition. I think it’s cool. You saw the reception. We all love ‘T.’

Wirfs: In high school I blocked a punt. And then scooped and scored. That was my last touchdown. It was nice getting back in the end zone. Catching a touchdown in the NFL, it’s a pretty cool feeling.

Goedeke: [On if he’s the next Bucs tackle to get a touchdown:] Yeah, we’ll see. We’ll see.

Wirfs: I have to give a shoutout to Payne [Durham]. Thanks to his holding call [which nullified a Bucky Irving one-yard touchdown run two plays prior], I don’t think it would have happened.

Todd Bowles: As soon as [Wirfs] came off the field, he asked me for No. 87. Had Payne not caught a ball, I would’ve considered it.

We got plays drawn up for Tristan in the redzone, but nothing for Cade & Payne. Grizz stinks.

ICYMI: On the NFL Network yesterday evening, Wirfs was featured on a segment called “That helps no one”. Pretty cool to see the ,milage he’s getting on that play. Very nice!

That was a TE catch. Good hands!!

  8. ModHairKen Says:

What I loved was the dignity of the celebration.

    Some people just get it.

Like Tez. Scores a TD while still down and had the grace not to do the backflip.

This team has more good players than bad. Way more.

It’s about to get hot. The annual losing streak is behind them.

  9. Aqualung Says:

“Shoutout to Payne Durham.” ROTFLMAO! That is funny right there I don’t care who you are.

  10. SBucs Says:

The Bucs don’t with play tight ends.
