Anthony Nelson > Haason Reddick?
October 28th, 2025A former Buccaneer is confident the Bucs have an in-house upgrade at the edge rush position.
After the spectacular day Anthony Nelson had Sunday, retired Bucs guard Ian Beckles (1990-1996) took to his In The Trenches podcast to say Nelson is a better option that big-money newcomer Haason Reddick. Beckles says he made that claim just before Nelson had 2 sacks, a forced fumble and a pick-six against New Orleans.
“I said in the first quarter, this was really before [Nelson] went off, I was talking to my boy Josh and I go, ‘I think he’s better than Reddick,'” Beckles said. “I’m not dogging Reddick. I just think when Anthony Nelson is there he makes more things happen in his limited play.”
Reddick has doubled Nelson’s snaps this year but Nelson has produced more than Reddick, strictly based on stats.
Joe won’t claim Nelson is more than a valuable backup the Bucs have done a very strong job developing as a fourth-round draft pick in 2019. But Joe also is not going to applaud Reddick’s body of work for Tampa Bay.
Reddick missed Sunday’s game with a sprained ankle and a sore knee. He won’t be out long. Joe is interested to see how Todd Bowles views the Reddick-Nelson debate when Reddick’s health returns.
Of course, that’s a situation that could be complicated by the Bucs trading for an edge rusher before the Nov. 4 trade deadline.

He did more in one half of football than Reddick has done all season……pretty much a no-brainer.
October 28th, 2025 at 2:37 pm
Nelson is absolutely way better than Reddick. Their play speaks for themselves. Their playing time should be reversed where Nelson starts and or Redick takes snaps from Braswell not Nelson
October 28th, 2025 at 2:38 pm
IDK about greater, but serves a different purpose and fwiw we def played them both at the same time so it’s a win-win for us as a team in my opinion.
October 28th, 2025 at 2:43 pm
Lets pump the brakes. Nelson was great against the Saints. But it was the Saints and Spencer Rattler. When we see some of that type play against Hurts or Goff, then we can start annointing Nelson.
October 28th, 2025 at 2:46 pm
ROTATE NELSON with yaya and reddick!!!!!
competition is the best motivation!!!
same thing happened to Dean this offseason….Parrish and Morrison are hungry and talented…Dean stepped his game up…. now its Zyons turn…i saw Dean and Morrison on the field while Zyon worked in the slot of on the bench….
Nelson deserves to start…he deserved to start over Tyron too but politics were working against him….
6-2!!!!
GO BUCS!!!!
October 28th, 2025 at 2:49 pm
Yes he is better, trade Reddick
October 28th, 2025 at 2:49 pm
Anthony Nelson is the equivalent of the 6th man in basketball. Good off the bench, but I’m not sure that from an athletic standpoint, he’d thrive as the starter. Or… hockey analogy: Yanni Gourde was a fantastic 3rd line center for the Bolts during their cup runs. Seattle paid him to be a top line center. He wasn’t. He’s back with the Lightning as.. you guessed it, a 3rd line center.
Moral of the stories? Stay in your lane. AN98 is super valuable coming off the bench. The Bucs still need a legit edge rusher on the other side of Yaya.
October 28th, 2025 at 2:49 pm
IDK, let’s see how he does against Drake Maye. Solid player but not ready to say he is a starter yet. Then again, it’s not like Reddick was setting the world on fire. Bucs still need a premier pass rusher.
October 28th, 2025 at 2:54 pm
Bowles always says you have to play the hot hand. Whose had is hotter than Nelson’s right now? I’d put him on the edge for as long as he produces. Rotate him with Reddick when the production drops off.
October 28th, 2025 at 2:55 pm
Admiral Nelson
October 28th, 2025 at 2:59 pm
Give Nelson a chance to prove he can do it more than one game. He may finnaly blossom into something more than a glue guy. What could it hurt? If a trade is to be made it should be a wide receiver. Possibly a guy that takes over next year for Mike or Chris so you don’t “lose” the draft pick. It’s becoming clear one of those two will probably age out.
October 28th, 2025 at 3:01 pm
Trade Reddick for another WR while he still has some “value.” He’s done nothing for the Bucs other than fill a roster spot.
October 28th, 2025 at 3:02 pm
Reddick’s return will be good for depth.
October 28th, 2025 at 3:03 pm
Reddick looks like a finesse pass rusher. I’ve been watching him for weeks and he seems to only have a speed rush and once those tackles get their hands on him it’s over. He’s dead in the water.
October 28th, 2025 at 3:03 pm
@Joe – I believe the Bucs trade for a WR before an edge rusher.
October 28th, 2025 at 3:07 pm
Before anyone recommends Nelson should get most of the reps – the Bucs have been down that road before and he didn’t hold up. He’s not physically strong enough to make it through a whole game and stay effective. He’s 6’7, 265, which sounds big until you put him against 6’4, 330. Nelson’s not the quick twitchy type who can avoid taking the brunt of a lineman’s power move at the point of attack.
To get the most from him he’s better off as a platoon player. Give him and Reddick/Other 20-30 snaps a game and don’t force him to get worn down by physical OLs.

still early but the lack of edge pressure is concerning….
Yaya cant seem to finish….imo, he’s better as a rotational player…
dont want to hear the “gassed” excuse…reddick has been using that excuse for a few weeks now…
braswell may be better at MLB…similar to zach baun…DE/OLB is not clicking for him…
i’d try flipping yaya and reddick..see if yaya can win 1on1 vs a RT…or i’d start Nelly…always loved his motor and he always makes plays
4-1!!!!
GO BUCS!!!!
October 28th, 2025 at 3:13 pm
By the way, the Saints ran chip blocks and double teams on Diaby all day Sunday. Which is exactly what they were doing to Reddick when he’s in the lineup. For all the bashing he gets here he was performing a valuable service in helping Diaby get 1-1 blocking. Nelson probably isn’t good enough to get the same amount of attention. Think about that before you bash Reddick again.
October 28th, 2025 at 3:13 pm
Anthony Nelson has betyter stats than Reddick. Haasan has started 7 of 7 games while Nelson has only started 1 of 8 games. Big 98 has earned a starting spot.

October 28th, 2025 at 3:19 pm
Braswell was actually bringing the heat in the second half. It needs to be a rotation along with Nelson and Reddick when he returns
October 28th, 2025 at 3:28 pm
He deserves more snaps for sure. As soon as Reddick heals, Nelly will be back on the bench and Reddick will be back in pass coverage.
October 28th, 2025 at 3:30 pm
I don’t know why exactly, but this dude typically turns it on from around mid-season onward:
-76.7% of his career sacks come Week 7 or later
-December alone accounts for over a quarter of his career production
-16.5 of his 21.5 career sacks happen mid-to-late season
Maybe his technique sharpens with more reps. Maybe Bowles’ adjustments compound. Maybe O-lines are just gassed by then and Nelson capitalizes.
Whatever it is—when it matters, he shows up. That’s the pattern.
October 28th, 2025 at 3:30 pm
Nellys emergence is fantastic but I still think Yaya can get double digits this year.
Reddick still has a chance to make us glad we got him. He’s played well overall even without sack numbers. Lot of games left.
We are 3rd in sacks league wise,
4th in TA differential btw 💪🏼🏈
I’m more concerned ATM with our rushing D – it’s slipped some this season so far

I watched Reddick quite a bit and haven’t seen anybody chip blocking him. I’ve seen tackles put hands on him and make him freeze like a statue. He may have been a beast at some point in his career but those days may be long gone.
October 28th, 2025 at 3:32 pm
Again
16.5 of his 21.5 career sacks happen mid-to-late season!!

Remember when Sean Tucker ran for 200 yards vs the Saints and everyone was crowning him the starter and saying he’s the next big thing, that the Bucs wouldn’t even trade for a 1st round pick.
Surely you’d think people would learn from stuff like that, but no, right back to the same gimmick.
But maybe this time you’re right! Maybe this time the guy who has played here for years and had lots of chances to prove himself, maybe this is it, something snapped, and now he’s a future HOFer! I’d love to see it happen.

At this point in their respective careers…Nelson probably is better. If nothing else, it should raise Reddick’s game/sense of urgency as he’s fighting for his NFL life ( outside of only 1 year deals here on out ).
The way Nelson not only caught his own tipped pass ( we see those fumbled away all the time ) then turning The Rattler into a meme/future practice squader was a thing of beauty. Loved it!

You’re a moron, I’ve said a million times my favorite player of all time is Donald Igwebuike — where in the world did you get Matt Gay from? What a dope. You can’t be a Winston fan and like Gay, when Winston lost his job because Gay single handedly lost two games in 2019. Also idiot, I said at the time, with as much as I like the gunslinger Winston, if you got a chance to get Tom Brady, you do so. You guys do know that Nelson has played for the Bucs, for years — right? This wasn’t the first time he’s started a game or played a lot of snaps. It’s very unlikely he’s suddenly leveled up out of the blue.
This is why we can’t have nice things. A player has a great game vs a terrible team, and people are suddenly are worried that he’s not locked up for the next half-decade. Reminds me of people saying we needed to lock up Fitz to a long term deal after he had two good games to start the year in 2018.
Again, you’d think people would learn from the past, figure out that guys can have a big game here and there, it doesn’t mean it’s the new norm.
With that said, Nelson played an awesome game – and earned more playing time. Let’s wait another game or two and see what he does before writing his HOF speech. I’m not rooting against him in the least, just being realistic, guys pretty much never just suddenly become stars out of the blue – I’d love to see it happen – but the numbers are what they are. Just chill out because you’re starting to cut guys and redo the roster after a one week game vs the worst team in the NFL.
October 28th, 2025 at 4:54 pm
Pretty sure the play after Reddick got hurt, Nelson got a sack. Then this week he went off. Nelson might not have the top tier athleticism, but what he does have is heart and you can’t teach that. This guy never takes a play off. He never gives up on a play and he sure as hell makes things happen when he is on the field. Give him starter reps and see if it pays off. The guy has 3 sacks in 2 games. Our current sack leader has 4 all season and has played a hell of a lot more snaps than Nelson.
October 28th, 2025 at 5:02 pm
But is he better in coverage?
October 28th, 2025 at 5:15 pm
Did the Bucs actually develop a DE/OLB? He was drafted in the fourth round in 2019. Imagine that!
Go Bucs!!
October 28th, 2025 at 5:18 pm
This is so stupid! Nelson has been here for years. If he is better than Reddick I would imagine even the often clueless Buc management (see JTS, etc.) would have realized that. He had a great game– against the worse team in the league. Like others have said, don’t expect HOF performance from him the rest of the way. If I was GM I would pick the most promising edge from all the other team’s practice squads and find an injury for Braswell.

“Remember when Sean Tucker ran for 200 yards vs the Saints and everyone was crowning him the starter and saying he’s the next big thing, that the Bucs wouldn’t even trade for a 1st round pick.“
Remember when we came back after our bye week last year and in Coens first presser he said they racked their brains on how to get the 3rd RB more touches, or this past preseason when the HC said we’ve got to figure out how to get 44 more involved or how most recently the new OC said we need to get 44 more involved lol you’re the only Buc fan campaigning against Sean Tucker against Tucker. When the rest of us know we got a day 2 back for UDFA compensation lololololol talk about ice skating uphill 😂 give it a rest Rod.

Go out and get an edge rusher and WR / TE. Refer back to NY giants they had a plethora of DE and dominated the SB.
Bucs need a backup WR TE threat as well. Come on Jason. You want to win or just a division title¿¿¿¿¿

Reddick has been given eight games to prove himself as an impact starter. What has he done to lockdown that job. He makes more cash than Nelson. Does that count? It might. Most of what comes out of the mouth of Ian Beckles makes him sound like a dude that smokes a lot of weed. But maybe this time he’s got it right.

@RobInLandOLakes
I still think they should consider moving Kancey to DE next year. Get him to drop like 10 or 15 lbs. then move him over there. Then they’d have Kancey with Yaya & keep Roberts with Vita. Maybe I’m wrong.

Nelson produced more in one game than Reddick has in 7. And why is Braswell even still on the roster? At the very least put him on the practice squad to open up an active spot on roster for more contributing players.

It’s one game. Calm down. However, I have to agree with DR’s post yesterday in that he seems to go off mid season. Injuries? Perhaps a casualty of Bowles’ “not ready yet” philosophy. Funny. The guy you’ve been looking to get for several seasons ( maybe 10 ?) has been there the whole time? Go Bucs! BFM!
October 28th, 2025 at 8:22 pm
I like Nelson and I hope he’s finally developed, but I’m tempering my enthusiasm for this performance because it was against New Orleans. He has been able to show out in his limited opportunities, so I’m keeping my eye on him after the bye (but I bet Reddick figures out how to get back into the lineup a lot faster).
October 28th, 2025 at 8:42 pm
I don’t usually leave replies, but for the love of everything holy. Please GM Jason Licht. Please do whatever you need to do to trade for Cleveland’s and Miles Garrett. I appreciate and understand the strength and your ability to pick future considerations and the impact they have on our team. But our Super Bowl window is only so large Miles Garrett will not only do what it needs to be done to be successful, but he too also wants a championship, plug him into the defense and have faith that you’ve made the right decisions on the offense with Baker, Godwin, Bucky, and others bring that championship home again.

Good gig if you can get it.

Wow this topic has touched a few a nerves and led to great reading!. All I will say is it was a thing of beauty watching Nelson deflect that pass and not go all spastic and calmly gather it and have the sense to lower his shoulder to blast Rattler to the turf and waltz into the end zone, The dude was in a rare zone the whole game. Props to him as he was a game wrecker! A sight to see!
October 28th, 2025 at 10:09 pm
No doubt….give Nelson those $$
October 28th, 2025 at 10:23 pm
I’m still a Sean Tucker fan. Of the two men ahead of him, one is undersized and fragile and the other is less physical than Tucker. I am also aware that the coaches do not share my enthusiasm, so the offense is designed around the other two runners. Thus, the lack of opportunities for him. However, he did find a way to stick the ball in the end zone, despite a retreating offensive line.
October 28th, 2025 at 11:10 pm
This is nothing new for Nelson. He had a forced fumble last year against Carolina in a must win game that pretty much won the game for the Bucs.

I keep hearing this, and believe me, I’d love for it to happen — but it’s never going to happen. The Browns are a very stupid organisation, but even they are not that stupid. There’s no one that is giving up the best player on defense in the NFL – maybe for a proven young franchise QB, but that’s about it. The people of Cleveland would even stop polluting and setting their own rivers on fire to go to the Browns headquarters and set it on fire instead. It just won’t happen.
The only legit trade target is Trey Hendrickson if the Bengals lose again this weekend. The Bucs could also aggressive go after Crosby, but that would likely cost two firsts, at least.
I doubt Licht does anything, but perhaps some teams lose this weekend and think they’re out of the hunt and make guys available unexpectedly.
October 29th, 2025 at 5:53 am
if he repeats that performance and consistently plays at a high level, then sure. but in this league it’s a game of depth and rotation, and knowing where to fit certain guys into a package. maybe it’s not as black and white as “who is better” out of the two, but having both guys out there playing a high percentage of the snaps keeps the defense guessing.

October 29th, 2025 at 6:49 am
Nelson has shown potential in his limited playing time. But IMO, he should have had more playing time, due to the relative lack of productivity from our high draft
pick, JTS.
October 29th, 2025 at 7:51 am
Nelson is a nice player. Really liked the way he chased down Rattler from behind the other day to make the tackle. He stayed with it once Rattler scrambled out of pocket.
October 29th, 2025 at 8:30 am
“So what exactly has Tucker done that makes him a ‘day 2’ back?”
That’s as high as his draft eval got before his stock plummeted after doctors found that heart condition, that’s what I meant by a day 2 back. We got him on a UDFA contract, he’s got a little bit of run in his time with us and anybody with eyes can see(and has already seen) his potential, except you lol

October 29th, 2025 at 9:57 am
Nelson seems to do this once every year. He could split time with him though, keep ’em both fresh. Reddick seems to choose to take away the swing pass a lot more than I ever noticed elsewhere. Seems to be used as a bluff frequently.
October 29th, 2025 at 10:34 am
Its tough to say better after one game but no doubt whatsoever that he should get the start against the Patriots. No way after that performance you send him to the bench over a guy that hasnt done much all year and is on a prove it contract
October 29th, 2025 at 1:41 pm
Totally different players. Nelson is a prototype left DE, Reddick is a rush LB. Shouldn’t be that hard to figure out how to use both.
The one thing that I know Anthony Nelson is not, is a slot corner, so quit making him cover the curl/flat.
There are enough pieces on this defense to do some fun things, but you have to be able/willing to play tight on the backend in order to do it. Some coaches have the nuts to do it, like the Lions did against us, and some coaches like to play soft and try to give up field goal attempts, like Bowles.
October 29th, 2025 at 3:52 pm
EASY SOLUTION…
You let Nelson start another game and see how he does. If he performs well again he has earned the starting job.
October 29th, 2025 at 11:32 pm
I think Nelson should start an they should use Reddick as Strictly a pass Rusher I think at his age they are just getting Reddick Tires by playing most of the game he should be rushing the passer not stopping the Run or dropping in Coverage imagine if he just came in fresh on Passing down I think we would get more out of Reddick but what do I know
