Guess who has more rushing yards this season than Josh Allen, Kyler Murray and Caleb Williams?
That’s right! It’s Baker Mayfield.
Mayfield’s 116 yards rushing rank him fourth among quarterbacks, one yard behind Eagles QB Jalen Hurts.
After a career-best rushing season by a mile last year, Mayfield is well on track to best the 378 yards on the ground he had in 2024.
Speaking on the Rearview podcast, Mayfield talked about his running prowess and his 33-yard scramble against the Jets on Sunday.
“I wouldn’t necessarily say I have an extra gear,” Mayfield said. “I get zero to 100 pretty quick. But that 100 percent is not real fast. Just trying to be elusive, extend plays on third downs. And then the long [run on Sunday], I figure I’m going to be tackled by now or have to slide to keep the clock rolling in that situation. And then all of a sudden there’s a lane. I’m like, ‘Oh gosh. Ok.’ Like, I don’t know what to do with my hands type things. Just keep running; Forest Gump until they get me. But yeah, just trying to take advantage of the moments, just split the gap. Anything it takes to try and win a ballgame.”

Mayfield is on track to break the Tampa Bay franchise record for rushing yards by a quarterback in a single season. That’s owned by Hall of Fame QB Steve Young — 425 yards in 1986.

Glad we found a fit to follow in Brady’s footsteps and who has imo been an even better fit for our team.I am also happy that he was able to find a new home. Too many bad teams draft these young kids and expect them to save the franchise without all the tools needed.

It’s less about the total rushing yards and much more about what happens when he runs. On 12 carries Mayfield has an outstanding 8 first downs this year. So, 67% of the time he leaves the pocket the chains move.
That’s incredibly impressive considering that he’s pulling those numbers on what are busted plays that could have been sacks. Winning differences in games are with guys who do things just like that.

Almost as many as our starting RB too, and yes that’s a knock on the current state of our running game. It sucks.
Bucky is awesome, so it’s either poor playcalling or our battered O-line.
Still 3-0, though, with virtually no running game outside of the QB position, so that’s a positive I guess.

Though I will never apologize to the fanboys because of the way they came up here attacking Buc fans who didn’t know him better, they did to us and now we see. He’s definitely our franchise. He was a diamond surrounded by a bunch of garbage ala Emmitt Smith and we cleaned it off of him. He’s perfect for us coming off a Brady type military precision and now guys have fun and at the same time believe in him and go to war with him. After these last three games as long as we have close to 2 minutes left and the game is close enough then I believe we always have a chance.

How can anyone not love this guy? What a gem! He’s light years more interesting than just about every QB in the league. One of one.
Nobody has a team more fun and exciting to root for in the league. We are quite blessed with this roster. now if we could just stay healthy…

I was ready to go after this take because from just watching the games it feels like our rushing has actually been very successful. Looked at the stats, and it confirmed my thoughts as we are currently 7th in the league in that regard.
Now, it gets scary because take away Mayfield’s yards and that puts us at a hopeless 24th. Thank you for bringing that fact to light. My take away is that now in my eyes, Baker should be far and away the MVP favourite.
Pair that with our bang average passing attack and it’s unbelievably impressive that we’re 3-0.
I do think it’s an OLine issue. Like I said, just watching the games and not paying attention to the number, the rushing offense doesn’t look “bad”, Bucky and Rachaad competing for that role, breaking tackles, getting the hard yards.
I can’t wait for us to get healthy and going, it could be very special. Ssaid it already once, I wouldn’t mind watching our hobbled guys take 1 more week and travel to Seattle 3-1 (or 4-0 since we have the Eagles’ number regardless) healthy and hungry for some points.

Get White more involved running the ball, Tucker as well. Teams are keying on Bucky, and our ground attack is too predictable. We need Baker healthy. He’s tough as nails, but he’s not invincible. There was so much talk about great our RB room was. We’re not making full use of that talent imo.

Baker will always have his detractors even if he brings home a couple of Super Bowls. It will be, well look who he has around him, Baker had too many turnovers, Baker is not accurate, etc…. Baker, Baker, Baker… it goes on ad nauseam and just wait until he has a bad game.

There are no Baker fan boys just people who have good judgement. No one ever attacked you David. It was the opposite. People just said what they have seen over the years at Bakers various stops and you attacked them for just reporting what they saw prior to Tampa Bay. Then you, Rod, and Onielbuc came up with these bizarre trades for Fields, Watson, and others. You mocked people with good judgement as being irrational with non football reasons for wanting Baker on the team. The opposite is true. You, Rod, and O’Neal had the non football reasons for wanting Baker off the team. What astounds me is you went opposite Todd Bowles judgement. Todd knew about Baker from the Jets scouting him in College.

Life is like a box of chocolates; you never know what you will get. Yeah, I saw the flick. Feisty Bake is better than a movie character. I bet quite a few of his admiring teammates don’t even know who Forrest Gump is. All I know is he is a firecracker who has no problem putting a wounded team on his shoulders. Yeah, that’s not a good thing, he’s having to run because of the beat up offensive line has been pretty terrible. Baker has done his job, but you’d hope with Wirfs back, and hopefully in a few weeks Luke is back, that the line play should improve quite a bit and Baker won’t be running for life all the time.
