Baker Mayfield: Playing The Eagles Is A Special Game

September 25th, 2025

Five-star matchup.

Every week in the NFL, Bucs quarterback Baker Mayfield said yesterday, is a battle. Every week is a test.

But when the Bucs see one of the best teams this decade up next on their schedule, the juices begin flowing.

“Every single week in this league is competitive, do not get me wrong on that, but when you are playing the Super Bowl champions from last year — a team that is really, really good — you always try and elevate your game a little bit,” Mayfield said. “We are trying to set the tone on our end. This year is not just about winning the division, but the goal after that we [have] to take it one game at a time and this week we have a great opponent in the [Philadelphia] Eagles.”

Joe thinks Mayfield put it perfectly. Since the Bucs lost to the Commandos in the playoffs last year, the team reassembled and added pieces not just to win the NFC South but to make a postseason run.

That goal may temporarily have been sidetracked with all the injuries the team has suffered, but the Bucs can still get healthy to do damage in January.

Facing the Super Bowl champs will give the Bucs a pretty good gauge what they will have to work on to hang with the NFL’s elite.

The boat celly is a throwback to the gravediggers. Jpp, Shaq, CD3. AWJr. Dean. All those guys used to row the boat.

The key to stopping the Eagles, IMO, is not corralling Barkley or putting a lid on their talented wideouts, it’s stopping the running of Jalen Hurts.
A running QB who almost never gets hurt in the NFL is the rarest of rarities. Lamar Jackson comes to mind as a running threat, but his diminutive frame can lead to injury—and has.
Hurts is built like an old fullback so can take the punishment. If the Bucs defense can stop Hurts from scrambling for long yardage first downs I believe we can win the game.
Let Barkley have some yards, and allow a few completions, but shackling the legs of Hurts should be the prime directive of the game plan.
Nothing is more frustrating than allowing a QB to run for a first down on 3rd or 4th and long. Ask the Texans …

I’m not feeling great about this game. It just feels like all of the injuries will show up Sunday. I hope I’m wrong. Regardless, at worst the Bucs will be 3-1 and getting reinforcements soon.

  4. PSL Bob Says:

Lt. Dan, I think most Bucs fans are not expecting the Bucs to win this one, primarily because of all our injuries. However, should the Bucs win, Bucs Nation will be ecstatic.

    No Debbie Downers!
Yeah, we are beat up—-no question about it.
But how many in the football world gave Cleveland a chance to beat the “invincible” Packers last week?
It’s the NFL, the definition of ‘on any given Sunday!’
After three weeks we’ve been winning ugly. Perhaps it’s time we put a full 60 minutes together. Ya never know …
And some call me a hater —— Ha!

  6. Teflon Don Says:

Hate to be a homer but I like us this game. Bowles and co have done a great job against Phillys offense. Hopefully it continues this week. Go Bucs!

  7. BOOTSTRAP JACK Says:

The heat of the day is. It’s stuck in their brains. Buccaneer players. Should constantly remind him. Of just how hot it is. And isn’t this a team? Someone said had a very boring offense.

  8. Baking with Grizz Says:

Once again, let’s see what Carberry and Grizz have manufactured for our Oline to do what is needed for a Win.

Although, we have beaten 4 out of 5 times in the last 5 games some fans still won’t give this team which is 3-0 the benefit of the doubt.

With Wirfs and Godwin playing it makes us favorites in my opinion.

    LFG!!!!

    GO BUCS!!!!

  11. KABucs Says:

The Eagles also have injuries and they haven’t been exactly blowing people out. They rely on Barkley and we stop the run well. We’ve been running it well ourselves even with the makeshift o line. As far as the online and Baker’s protection, let’s see what the game planning can do there. Bowles seems to be able to game plan well for their offense, can Griz game plan well with our offensive issues? We shall see.

A solution to the mystery as to why the foot came off the gas against the Jets.

    Todd has gout.
