Career Game For Jamel Dean In One Area
September 10th, 2025The cornerback who had his contract slashed like Russell Stover chocolate at Walgreens on Feb. 15, a guy who may already be a backup, per Bucco Bruce Arians, was praised for possibly having the best performance of his career on Sunday.
Jamel Dean was that man when it came to physicality, apparently.
Todd Bowles has coached Dean for seven seasons.
“I thought [Dean] as well as Zyon [McCollum] and [Jacob] Parrish, when we played man coverage, and we played quite a bit, they played very tight coverage,” Bowles told the Buccaneers Radio Network.
“They played very tight coverage. They were on their guys for the most part. The ball didn’t go over our heads. And they played extremely tough. There are probably two plays [Dean] would like to have back; jammed to high and got the facemask penalty there, and he got another holding penalty. But I thought he played physical, probably his most physical man-to-man game I’ve seen him play since he’s been here.”
How bout that! Dean, nearing his 29th birthday, delivered what might have been his most physical showing in man coverage.
Joe’s not sure what to believe when it comes to the Bucs’ cornerbacks position. Hard answers are coming once rookie Benjamin Morrison gets healthy. He’s been shelved for more than a month but was practicing on a limited basis last week.

Maybe Bowles will be encouraged to keep up the pressure man-to-man.

When two players are drafted at your position & you’ve run out of guaranteed money, you tend to be motivated!!!

And most amazingly, Dean didn’t get injured.

How about no more playing 10 yards back with 7 to go. EZ first down. Press coverage always with short yardage. Any genius out there think this is a bad idea?

Go back and look at the play at the end of the game, where he let the receiver go by him and then layed down to look like he tripped and Winfield had to save the game!

Dave looked to me like he had just passed that guy off and made a sudden. Cut towards.tbr one in the flat just as the ball was thrown. Then likely tried to adjust to.thr ball and slipped. I think it was already winfield’s man at that point

Jacob Parrish is a dawg! Did this kid even miss a day of training camp? Morrison needs to start acting like a 21 yr old instead of an 80 yr old.

Coburn.. agreed. I think it was AWJ that was late on that one.
Still glad Dean is likely moving on though.

Jacob Parrish is one of the guys I’m pulling for. What’s the update on Izien, Joe?

This is a joke. Dean was easily beaten in the end zone at the end of the ATL game. Hodge went past Dean like he was standing still. For whatever reason Hodge did not pick up a really good pass by Penix. Had he picked it up we would have been talking this week about Bucs always pathetic pass defense. Doesn’t matter, we will be talking about it soon enough. Don’t see much improvement.

Good things can happen when you’ve got all your starters. Far from a perfect game, but as was the same on offense as long as you make the right plays on the right situation you can win in this league. Get that W by any means necessary.

Man Gipper and some fans clearly do not know ball. Dean was in zone, if anything its hard to tell who was responsible for the zone where the ball was thrown i.e., Smith or Winfield even though Winfield made a hell of a play. But again, they were running zone and Dean was responsible for the shallow zone.

Anyone have the zone vs man snaps? Watching the game live, it didn’t feel like they ran much man, nearly every time I noticed, it was zone – although watching it live it’s hard to really keep track of stuff. If they ran a lot more man than last year, I’d be really happy with that, because that soft zone was just getting them killed all last year.

IMHO, they ran to much soft coverage once they got the lead and at the very end of the game.

Bowles is making comments in an effort to build trade value for Dean.

Is my math wrong? If Dean gets 750000 per game as bonus, that’s 12750000 plus the 4.25 million per year…. sounds like it was a cap move to me. DEAN GOT A BIG RAISE

I’ve seen that as well, and just assumed they mean a one-time bonus, not per game, but doing more reading – and that is correct, but it’s pretty complicated. But basically, the idea his salary was cut to $4M, is only referring to his base salary. The per game roster bonus increased from $500k to $750k. Somehow, between last years bonus and this restructure, the Bucs save about $2.5M, and frees up money next year as well. Pretty complicated, but there was nowhere near the huge cut in pay to Dean as first reported, not unless he gets injured and misses most of the year.

@Rod
Not sure on the splits, but I know we leaned on Atlanta with some cover 3 in the 2nd half, which opens the door for us to man up with at least 1 CB while splitting the top of the D into 3rds. Showed quarters early, and if I’m not mistaken that’s what we were in when Robinson broke contain and scored on that long play. Other than that we kept a lid on them. Bowles mixed it up, and our guys saw it through well enough to win
September 10th, 2025 at 6:00 pm
Warren Brooks Lynch – Yeah, it was a solid effort, but keep in mind Atlanta was without it’s #2 WR, and then lost London as well, so the Bucs were going against a bunch of depth roster players at the end. Then again, the refs are the only reason the Falcons scored more than 13 points.
Overall it was a good day, which is odd since Penix still looked really good to me. The last time that happened was last years opener vs the Redskins, where watching Daniels, he really impressed me even as the defense gave him a really hard time. I really legit worry Penix is about to have a huge year, he looks so calm and accurate under pressure, I hope it was just a mirage.

Dean has been mis-used his whole tenure with Todd Bowles. He needs to stay in press coverage AT ALL TIMES. That’s where he excels.
Sure. like all corners, he will definitely be beat every once in a while, but that’s what you have safeties for.
I have never had a problems with Dean. When used correctly, he covers damn well and is one of the more physical tackling corners in the game. At least when he is not injured.
September 10th, 2025 at 11:57 pm
^ Yup.
We’ve always had DBs who were better at man vs zone, yet Bowles call a ton of zone coverages based on his scheme… I could yell about this all day.
