Baker Mayfield Wants Playcaller In His Face

August 24th, 2025

The Bucs are an emotional, camaraderie-loving group. Their quarterback feeds on it.

That’s part of why Mayfield wants rookie offensive coordinator Josh Grizzard on the field calling plays and not up in a coach’s box high above the playing field.

“He needs to be down here [on the field,]” Mayfield said on the WFLA-TV broadcast of the preseason finale last night. “And for me, honestly, I like it when [the playcaller] is down here. Just being able to have conversations with them, not getting on the phone. And then I think they can also just, you know, read the vibe of the whole offense when they’re down here. Be able to communicate what they’re trying to get to, set up some plays.”

Mayfield went on to express his love for Grizzard and how Grizzard was “in all our meetings last year” and has the respect of the offense.

“He’s clear and concise in the communication of what he’s trying to get done,” Mayfield said. “And I think the guys understand some of the third downs were dialed in because of him last year.”

Grizzard was on the field for the Bucs’ first two preseason games but went into the booth last night to feel out calling a game there. He bolted after halftime and returned to the field.

That’s a good sign. I like him on the field too. Sometimes there’s limited time to communicate…

Feeling the vibe of the players in real time is something that makes a lot of sense! Glad it’s an emotional bunch, makes up for stoic Bowles. LOL

I can’t f-ing wait till we go to Atlanta and kick their a$$e$

Agreed, Grizz should be on the field. Some miscommunications otherwise.

Communication is key. It’s got to be better to do it at field level than through a headset and a window pane.

OC should be on the sidelines

Its a very good sign that this is the topic of the day, bring so close to game day. No major injuries, no qb controversy, etc..

  8. Vanessa Anne Says:

I would respectfully encourage Grizz to accomodate the desires of his starting QB on this one.

Griz and Baker are close in age. Griz has a degree from Yale and reportedly has a very blue tongue. A potty mouth. Cusses like a sailor. If he wants to be upstairs I think he’ll be upstairs. If Baker doesn’t like it he can hurl a few nasty remarks Grizz’s way. Then Griz can retort in kind. These guys are pros who are on a mission. Young and driven. Respect each other. Know their jobs. Don’t get their pansy feelings hurt. Last year Liam remarked “Baker yelled at me. Sometimes it’s best to leave Baker alone after he’s thrown a pick”. This Griz is gonna be the first OC who’s gonna stay with Baker for awhile. Maybe after a dumb pick Griz will tell Baker to pull his head out of his effin A. And it’ll all be good. Because these gifted young men are fixing to announce to the league that there is a new sheriff in town. This oughta be more fun than a barrel of monkey’s!!!

I’m liking this combo. Wish we had Wirfs and Godwin though. Where are all the Traskers still foaming at the mouth that he should be starting? Is Trask now QB3?

I have the perfect play caller for Baker…Bruce Arians. One more victory lap, Bruce…for a shot at another title and HOF candidacy.

I think Griz is going to be some where in between Canales and Coen, which means he’s going to be a real good OC. Let’s just pray that he doesn’t get poached. He needs to stay on our staff and take Bowels spot eventually.
