Why Was Chris Godwin Mic’d Up?

August 10th, 2025

It’s late on a Sunday and Joe is still drooling over the excitement of a seemingly endless sea of football games this weekend.

Joe is crazy excited for this Bucs season but would be more fired up if one certain Buccaneer was preparing to play early in the season. His name is Chris Godwin, the ninth-year player who is the second best Bucs receiver of all-time with 579 catches for 7,266 yards.

The Bucs have been tight-lipped about Godwin’s recovery for months after multiple ankle surgeries.

In March, Godwin himself told hosts Pat Kirwan and Jim Miller of SiriusXM NFL Radio that they would see him “drenched in sweat, as always” on the field when the duo comes to Bucs training camp for an annual show. That show was Thursday, and Godwin has yet to practice.

Joe has been uneasy about the Godwin silence but was learning to live peacefully with it. And then Joe saw Godwin mic’d up last night at the Bucs-Titans preseason game.

The legendary JoeBucsFan.com photographer caught several photos of Godwin sporting a microphone. (One photo above)

Why would the Bucs mic up an injured player long before he was prepared to play — in a preseason game?

That sure seemed like a clue that Godwin is coming along well in his recovery and could be close to his return. It seems hard to believe Godwin would be mic’d up just for possibly a few nuggets of him propping up young receivers.

Perhaps Joe is way off base, but this is where the Bucs and Godwin have driven Joe — aching for any clue that Godwin is close to practicing and playing.

Joe is curious what other Bucs fans think.

Lol it means nothing other than media for when we win the superbowl and they can include that Godwin was coaching even when recovering

  2. BuccinBaker6, Says:

I pray your Right Joe I really believe that the Bucs seen how great Emeka was an really have been Slow rolling Godwin Jr ever since they don’t want to rush him back early an not be ready. But I think you could be on to something Joe well let’s hope

  3. Miller5252 Says:

These type of stories from Joe always make me think Joe knows the truth on Godwin, but can’t come out and say or his source won’t give him off the record info anymore. This is Joe’s subtle way, or breadcrumbs to readers, letting us know he’ll be back very soon. Or I could be way off and just make this stuff up in my head because I want Godwin back week 1 full go! 😂

  4. LakelandBuc Says:

It might be better for the young guys to play early. And let veterans like Godwin, ME to play more late in the season/playoffs. In Godwin case, he’s recuperating from a serious leg injury. It gonna take a lot of time to completely heal from it. As far as ME, we probably need to give him 5-8 targets early to keep his streak alive. And also to keep him active, fresh for the playoffs.

When you’re talking Super Bowl, you better be prepared for a 20 game season, minimum. And we’re also talking off-season workouts, practice, Training etc. Now you talking a 6 month season. These guys are not robots. You’re going to have to utilize 2nd, 3rd string, and practice squad players throughout the reason.

We’re all in the same boat. How on earth is anyone going to cover a 4 headed monster?

  6. RVATom Says:

I agree with First Last. All this 50th anniversary stuff and the I Am That Man episodes
Probably internal media along those lines. But … it’s not my wheelhouse so who knows?

  7. White Tiger Says:

Would be great to have Emeka step into a similar (as CG) role to begin the season then if Emeka hits a rookie wall, have CG step back into a role, seamlessly.

Hoping it works out that way!

  8. Warren Brooks Lynch Says:

Being Mic’d up for a preseason game has nothing to do with Godwins’ recovery. The guy is a leader on this team and has 2 young prospects who’ve been targeted by Bucs media since both have gotten into the building. Gumshoe Joe lol

  9. Dewey Selmon Says:

Maybe a PR stunt to calm down rabid fans and media. I thnik he is no where near ready to play. Even when he is cleared he wont be in game shape. The Bcus knew what they where doing when the deafted EE9

  10. Bucs Fan From Philly Says:

Feels like a stretch that being mic’d up means anything recovery related. Especially in an era where content is everything. He could be doing it for Bucs media team, in the current series, or acting as a coach on the sideline. Who knows

  11. Aqualung Says:

He was probably cross training the hot dog vendors in section 122. Versatility is important on Todd’s teams.

  12. ballwasher61 Says:

Yeah smells of PR which I don’t mind. Also wondering if Chris will get into coaching when his playing days are done and if this might be part of his future resume’?

  13. Usfbucs Says:

I don’t think it means anything. Might just be more of CG being a solid pro and wanting to be involved some how since he is limited. I see no reason to rush him back. Let him come back a month or even half way into the season, then we have a stud WR with fresh legs when other teams are feeling the season already.

  14. Aqualung Says:

The secret will unfold. Godwin will come back from his injury as a cross trained edge rusher who can also hold for field goals. Todd leaves no stone unturned to confuse the opponent.

  15. Tampabaybucfan Says:

Drooling over an endless sea of football games. Worthless preseason game drool.

  16. adam from ny Says:

    what if:

it’s because godwin is gonna sing the national anthem at the opener vs the jets…

yep it just might happen…and it would be the coolest thing ever…

mic check one two…mic check one two 🙂

  17. Gotti-Dog-05-20-84 Says:

In the world of “Things To Overthink About” I don’t think this topic is worthy of being included…..

Someone in the Bucs media dept. most likely said “Hey Chris! How about wearing a mic tonight?….maybe we’ll get some cool soundbites we can use in one of our promo shorts later on.”

  18. Aqualung Says:

Adam, that’s it. And then he’ll come out and kick off, and also return kicks and pints. And line up in the secondary to fortify the deep zone .

  19. Bucs4Ever Says:

IMHO, this was pre-planned long ago…JMHO

  20. garro Says:

Agreed Joe! That is nothing but good news.

    Go Bucs!

  21. The Southest Buc Says:

I think the best commentator on field it must be and injured player… plenty of time to make one liners. That’s why for me. You’re seeing the optimistic side of the story and hope it’s goes your way, but I can see easily how it could be the other way and that, being the only of Godwin in time.
Sorry to keep you up beat Joe, just my honest thoughts.
Thanks as always for the great job

  22. FrontFour Says:

PUP … Not much discussion these days about Godwin from OneBuc. Probably game 5 or 6 before we see him.

  23. Brad Says:

When he was coming off the knee, didn’t he just participate non-contact all summer and then play the first game and got the first few balls thrown to him?

  24. Buc That Says:

Next episode of In the Current is my guess. Buccaneers media is amazing, In the Current is better than Hard Knocks in my opinion.
