Bucs To Sign Teddy Bridgewater

August 5th, 2025

UPDATED: Another quarterback is in the house! And he’s a long-time favorite of Bucco Bruce Arians and many others in the Bucs’ heirarchy.

That’s veteran Teddy Bridgwater, who was out of football most of last year and coaching high school football in South Florida. When last seen by most Bucs fans, microphones and cameras caught Lavonte David telling Bridgewater he might retire. David was walking off the field of the Bucs-Lions playoff game in January of 2024.

Bridgewater, 32, drafted by the Vikings in Round 1 of the 2014 NFL Draft, will get a long look by the Bucs in preseason. Todd Bowles said today that Bridgewater has to knock off 18 months of rust, but the Bucs are eager to see what he can deliver.

Joe is very intrigued. Bridgewater is an upgrade from Kyle Trask, if he’s still the Bridgewater that was a very successful backup for the slimy Saints.

In his last season as a starter, 2021, Bridgewater was 7-7 with the Broncos. He was a backup with the Dolphins and Lions after that.

Buccaneers Ring of Honor general manager Jason Licht said the pending Bridgewater signing has been something on his staff’s mind for several weeks.

    Trask Trade incoming?

  2. Rover Says:

Trask that bad going into year 5??? Go Bucs!

  3. buc4evr Says:

Maybe the Bucs are going to keep 3QBs. I don’t see them getting rid of Trask.

  4. AlabamaBucsFan Says:

Bucs just need another arm for training camp. At this point, I wouldn’t bet on Bridgewater making the initial 53 cut but may be brought back once a roster spot opens up.

  5. 813bucboi Says:

bucs will keep 3 QBs….and yes folks Trask is QB #2 LOL..

    GO BUCS!!!!

  6. Tampabaybucfan Says:

We needed another QB….why not a cheap Vet.

  7. Hodad Says:

About time they brought another arm into camp. It had to be a vet, no time for a young UDFA to digest the play book. Don’t be rediculous, the Bucs aren’t trading Trask, and I’m not sure Teddy, who’s been out of football, can’t move to save his life is an upgrade over Trask as Joe believes. If the Bucs thought he was Joe, why didn’t they sign him over Trask when both were free agents at the beginning of the offseason? Joe just trying to stir up the Trask haters once again.

  8. Aqualung Says:

For the over-reactors — right now, the Bucs only have two QBs. Pratt can’t get on the field, and Joe has told us Barzelac chews the root. Most teams carry 4 through the preseason. You know they’re gonna keep Baker in bubble wrap. Don’t be surprised if we sign someone else.

And as much as it’s fun to trigger the Kyle’s Trashk mob, this isn’t about Trask sucking at all. It’s depth and a better quality arm than the spastic playing behind Kyle.

  9. ReeeBarrr Says:

    Agreed Buc4ever

Too much loss of upside and value in that swing from a young prospect to an older cat that’s been out of football 1.5 years. The game moves fast.

    I do like Teddy tho

  10. Warren Brooks Lynch Says:

You guys are turning this into something it isn’t. We had our 3rd QB get hurt and the 4th is a UDFA who from the sound of Joes’ notes is performing like an undrafted QB.

So you bring in Teddy, who’d still be involved in football in some capacity if FHSAA weren’t against coaches looking out for poor people.

  11. Kenton Smith Says:

Hate to break this news. But one thing hasn’t changed. If Baker goes down this year Trask will still be the backup quarterback.

  12. Delson Says:

Maybe some RPOs with Bucky n white upcoming?

  13. First Last Says:

Calling it here first, Trask to the Raiders as Geno’s backup. Teddy goes in as QB2, then Ballzsak or Pratt (Platt?) as practice squad.

  14. AnotherJoeBucsFan Says:

Also as it was during Brady years, a vet QB like Bridgewater can provide key in-game insight to Baker when he comes off the field. Something that Trask cant replicate is Teddy’s NFL experience.

  15. Tbbucs3 Says:

Time to partways with Trask. This guy is not what he was cracked up to be by Florida fans.

    He’s Ryan Griffin 2.0

  16. The Big Sombreo Says:

    LOL!!!

Joe has always loved Teddy B.

How many articles have you written campaigning for Teddy, Joe?

  17. heyjude Says:

Teddy is a good guy, cares about others including the players he coached. I am glad they are giving him a chance. The Bucs are the perfect fit for Teddy.

  18. ModHairKen Says:

Trevor, seriously? Trask has ZERO trade value. Actually, the box will probably have to pay somebody to take him. So he has less than zero.

And I like Trask. But let’s get serious.

  19. matthew a veal Says:

this imo is about having 3 quarterbacks, obviously pratt may be out for the year.

let em play and we will see. in theory it could be good, time will tell

  20. BucEmUp Says:

If Trask isn’t ready yet he’s never going to be ready. What are we doing with him?

  21. Jack Burton Mercer Says:

Would be very surprised if Bridgewater has anything left in the tank. I liked him sometimes. Sometimes he was good, sometimes he wasn’t.

  22. LakelandBuc Says:

    None of this make sense,

Kyle Trask the 1st drafted QB in Bucs history
    To get a second contract

Then the Bucs bring in a former Pro Bowl QB
To compete with Trask for the backup QB position

I don’t understand why Trask resigned with the Bucs.
Knowing he will never be their starting QB

  23. BucFanforLife Says:

Would rather see what Trask can do if Mayfield got hurt than see Bridgewater come out. We already know what Teddy is gonna bring to you which ain’t much, feel like there’s more upside with Trask at this point of their careers.

  24. Power Of Pewter Says:

Bucs will keep Trask, esp since Pratt is injured. But Trask is only on a 1 year deal. Bridgewater brings a veteran arm… what would be the point of having Evans, Godwin, Egbuka, and McMillan on the roster if Trask is throwing the ball?

  25. garro Says:

Not impressed with him when he was getting all the kudos from the press and Arians. That was a few years ago as well…Nah

    Go Bucs!

  26. Tbbucs3 Says:

    Agree HeyJude,

Will be an interesting dynamic that Bridgewater has a year of coaching under his belt… so fully assuming that he’s gonna be a guy who will act like a coach/player in the locker room.

  27. Tony Says:

JUST BRING BRADY BACK! NO WORRIES!👍

  28. heyjude Says:

Tbbucs3 – True, hoping Teddy will be that same guy.

  29. Aqualung Says:

There are more vegetables posting in this thread than you find at a farmer’s market. Good golly.

  30. NC Bucs fan Says:

Can we please move on from the Trask debacle/experiment. Any true gator fan knows that there has yet to be a truly successful QB from the university of Florida in the NFL. Anthony Richardson had a chance of being the first but, injuries or derailing his chance. Tim Tebow could’ve been, but not a QB.

  31. Jim H Says:

May we now all admit that the Trask experiment was a failure?
