Buccaneers Practice News, Notes And Nuggets (Camp Day 10)

August 5th, 2025

UPDATED: *Ahhhhh, a slight breeze and a little less humid this morning at One Buc Palace as the Bucs are back in full pads following two days off. Practice should have a little more bite to it, especiallly with Baker Mayfield returning from his injured hand.

*Here are Joe’s highlights, lowlights and observations from Day 10 of training camp:

*Rookie/receiver Tez Johnson misses his third consecutive practice with an undisclosed injury. Not good for the fan-favorite, seventh-round pick hoping to make the team. Joe has to think this puts his availability in doubt for Saturday’s preseason opener. His prime competition, Trey Palmer, has missed the majority of camp with an undisclosed injury. Teams are not required to report injuries until. September.

*It’s time for 1-on-1 drills with receivers running routes and a defensive back in coverage.

*As hard as rookie cornerback Benjamin Morrison works, he can’t shut down Mike Evans. First time it was easy for Evans. Second time Morrison was so all over him, Joe’s not sure how the 10-yard out route got through for a completion.

*Camp meat receiver Dennis Houston beats Jacob Parrish DEEP from Trask, a 35-yard go ball. Pretty completion.

*The overly handsy version of cornerback Bryce Hall returned today. Couple of penalties that could have/should have been called.

*Lotta DB penalties in this drill, including Smith and Funderburk.

11-on-11 kicks off.

*YaYa Diaby very active in run defense off the left edge.

*Bucky Irving runs left. Joe’s eyes were on left tackle Charlie Heck manhandling Logan Hall. Bucky stopped for a loss by Lavonte David, who is back at practice after most of last week off.

*David is active again. Delivering a solid hit on Rachaad White on a well-executed screen play. A penalty was called on the play (referees are here today) and Luke Goedeke seemed annoyed by the unknown call.

*Busted snap with Trask kind of running into a crossing Sterling Shepeard. Coaches seemed annoyed and in came the first team. No do-over.

*Baker Mayfield gets a beautifully clean pocket and fires a strike to Evans over the middle for 15 yards (plus YAC). Tykee Smith was no match.

*Dumpoff to Bucky Irving in the right flat snuffed out quickly.

*Charlie Heck pulling right and takes out rookie DT Elijah Roberts on a well-executed run.

*Second-team offensive line still struggled. Trask dirts a throw to stay clean.

*Trask overthrows receiver Dennis Houston in back of end zone.

*Bucs in zone coverage and Mike Evans takes a 10-yard pass over the middle from Baker Mayfield. Soft! Looked like the Falcons against Tampa Bay last year.

*Bucky Irving finds a hole running left. More kudos for Mr. Heck.

*Run play and it looks like Ko Kieft was called for holding SirVocea Dennis. Looked obvious.

*Refs call a false start or some sort of motion on the second-team offense.

*Bucs working on some quirky type run plays that don’t seem smooth or viable. But hey, that’s what practice is for.

*Good to see the first-team offensive line back. Cody Mauch almost had a swim move to break free on a wide run right. Mauch is underrated as an athlete.

*Mayfield throws right to Shepard for about 10 yards. Incomplete. Hall delivered a well-timed and hard hit. Shepard looked at him as if to say, ‘Why are you hitting that hard in camp?’

*Incomplete, Mayfield to Emeka Egbuka short out route. Zyon McCollum in tight coverage with the pass breakup.

*Another presnap penalty that appears to be on the second-team offensive line.

*Baker Mayfield jumps and head butts Lavonte David after a break and just before the start of another 11-on-11 session following the backup kicker getting work.

*DROP! Devin Culp with the first team over the middle from Baker Mayfield. Charlie Heck rode YaYa Diaby wide and away from threatening Mayfield.

*Mayfield to Egbuka complete over the middle with Lavonte David in coverage. Egbuka showcases his strong hands.

*Mayfield over the middle complete to Rakim Jarrett.

*Vita Vea and Graham Barton is a fun battle. Sometimes it looks like Vea is going 85 percent.

*Another breakdown by the second team Bucs offensive line. Chris Braswell and C.J. Brewer in for the sacks.

*And behind that same line, Sean Tucker is met promptly by two D-linemen behind the line of scrimmage.

*Next play, somebody jumped early. Joe couldn’t tell but it looked like a camp-meat tight end.

*Success for the second team (third team?)! Nice screen executed Owen Wright, a backup RB.

*Hasson Reddick with a successful bull rush on Lorenz Metz, a backup tackle. Trask pass was dropped by a camp meat receiver who was then drilled by a Tyrek Funderburk.

*Lavonte David forces a fumble! Against the second team after a catch. Joe didn’t catch the fumbler. Think it was a tight end. David has big-time fresh legs today after nearly a week off.

*Jalen McMillan WIDE open against a trailing Tyrek Funderburk on first-team work. Complete for 20-plus yards.

*Man, Bucky Irving looks quick and game-ready.

*Rachaad White find a small hole off left guard.

*Empty backfield and Joe is focused on Chris Braswell squaring off against Charlie Heck. Braswell ends up on the ground near Mayfield’s feet. He gets up and shoves Heck, who does not back down. Pass was incomplete.

*Sean Tucker swallowed by rookie DT Elijah Roberts at or behind the line of scrimmage. Looked like he beat Ben Bredeson.

* A very rare Ko Kieft catch! On the right sideline, too.

* Great hands by Shepard catching a crossing route from Mayfield with Jamel Dean all over him. Mayfield adjusted his arm angle on the throw. Short gain but a sweet play.

* Red zone play, and it’s a Mike Evans touchdown at the goal line over the middle. Too much for Tykee Smith. Mayfield fired low and left and Evans’ hands were money.

*Tucker flashes fast feet in the hole for a second-level run.

*Safety J.J. Roberts snuffs out a wide receiver screen.

*Shepard has a nice catch and run with the second team and takes a hit from Rashad Wisdom.

*Rough practice for Kyle Trask. Throws a ball away intentionally that was a little too close to the defender for comfort.

*Another Shepard catch. About 10 yards over the middle from Trask.

*Mayfield often has his helmet off when not playing but holds it up to his ear like a very oversized cell phone to hear the playcall through his helmet speaker.

*Looked like a receiver jumped early in third-team work. A little skirmishing by center Jake Majors. He’s angry but he doesn’t find a taker. This happened after Devin Culp couldn’t handle blocking Braswell on a run play. It’s getting ornery out there as it’s gotten hotter and less breezy.

More Red Zone

*Antoine Winfield and Zyon McCollum stuff a run right in red zone work.

*Winfield hammers Bucky Irving in the hole. You could hear that crack. Graham Barton gets up slowly.

*It was all red zone running. Nothing too eventful.

Practice wraps about 10 minutes early. Bucs have an underwear football session (no pads) on Wednesday before the Bucs-Titans joint practice on Thursday at One Buc Palace.

  1. First Last Says:

Glad to see Baker back, not too happy about the hard hitting on starters. Though I’m surprised Sterling is out lasting everyone else. Palmer and Tez cannot stay on the field but somehow Shepard who is injury prone can LOL. Maybe it was the bad turf in New York that busted him up. Glad to see no Mike Evans hammy injury. But we might want to start rotating Majors in if Graham Barton is getting hit hard and is slow to get up.

We also need to watch the hits on Bucky. Thanks for the updates!

  2. JimBobBuc Says:

When QBs can’t get hit, why does Trask throw it away so much. Seems like he’s regressed.

Heck of a practice for the big man, maybe the days off helped.

Happy to hear Baker and LVD out there.

FINALLY, refs out there and of course many penalties. The Bucs can’t afford to beat themselves with penalties!

  3. Aqualung Says:

Excellent update. Thanks for all the attention to Charlie Heck. Maybe he’s better than Pat Kirwan thinks.

  4. MikeBuc Says:

Well the biggest news is Mayfield is back ending speculation on what bridgewater is being brought in for. Can’t see why he would come in to be number 3

Bummer for Tez. extended injuries for him are more than just temporary – they feed the idea he is too under sized to play in this league

  5. First Last Says:

btw Joe, what Davis plays for us? See your comment below

*Davis is active again. Delivering a solid hit on Rachaad White on a well-executed screen play. A penalty was called on the play (referees are here today) and Luke Goedeke seemed annoyed by the unknown call.

  6. heyjude Says:

    Great notes, Joe.

Officially worried about Tez and Trey now. Awesome to hear that Baker is up and running!

  7. Tampabaybucfan Says:

Sounds like Heck had a heck of a practice….

  8. Warren Brooks Lynch Says:

“*Good to see the first-team offensive line back. Cody Mauch almost had a swim move to break free on a wide run right. Mauch is underrated as an athlete.”

Very underrated athletically, remember to watch Mauch on any pulling action

  9. Bucfish Says:

    [Thank you! — Joe]

  10. Joseph C Simmons Says:

Jalen McMillan WIDE open against a trailing Tyreek Hill on first-team work. Complete for 20-plus yards.

I must have missed that we signed Cheetah but I really think they’re misusing him on defense.

  11. garro Says:

Trask looking off? What in the world? Are the big men not blocking for him? Strange that it seems he is getting more pressures. Tired? Weird.

    Go Bucs!

  12. infomeplease Says:

Looking forward to Friday’s game. I want to see the rookies go at it!

  13. dumboldguy Says:

NFL is becoming like hockey with injury reports. What is the deal with Pratt?

  14. PSL Bob Says:

“Jalen McMillan WIDE open against a trailing Tykee Smith on first-team work. Complete for 20-plus yards.”

I guess Tyreek didn’t like being upstaged by Travis Hunter so he decided to play a little defense. Didn’t realize the Bucs had signed him though. (Sarcasm)

  15. Crickett Baker Says:

Great notes. Thanks. I surely hope we fix those multiple penalties.

  16. infomeplease Says:

Trask off? Maybe his mental toughness is lacking…after the signing of Teddy Bridgewater! Is that his main issue with this team????

  17. jimmy Says:

    sounds like baker is ok

  18. LakelandBuc Says:

Trey Palmer and Tez Johnson are falling behind Shepard andJarrett

  19. BigBoiBuc Says:

    @Joe
TE update? Did Otten practice or still nursing a hammy? Any concern there? Culp sounds like he may have had his first bad day with a drop and missed block. No mention of Durham did he practice today? Ko Kieft with a catch! Good for him. Will Tuala be on practice squad again this year?

  20. 813bucboi Says:

    great job joe!!!!!

    GO BUCS!!!!

  21. Grateful Buc Says:

    Thank you!

  22. First Last Says:

Joe, do you think Rachaad White will be traded this year? Seems with only 1 carry in the post season against washington that they totally want to ride with Bucky. I’m surprised they didn’t play him more but oh well.

  23. BuccaDAWG Says:

Hey Joe, have you heard any talk about Teddy Bridgewater joining the Bucs as a backup Qb. Saw it on NFL Today . Also thanks for the camp info especially the emphasis on Heck.you done good
Already wrote all about it. –Joe

  24. Bucs4Life Says:

Shepard and Jarrett over Palmer and Johnson. Johnson is too light weight and not that fast (combine). Shiftiness is amazing until he gets that first big hit. He can’t just run off to the sidelines like in college when a big guy is barreling down on him. Already getting injured from practice. He needs to put on more weight before he sees an NFL game.

  25. Vanessa Anne Says:

Thank you for the notes, Joe.

I mentioned in another post about my concerns regarding our back ups on the O-line.

Sounds like Charlie Heck came on strong today.

    Glad to see that.

  26. Shak Says:

A lot of the post was talking about the 2nd team line. No wonder anyone would struggle behind it.
