Hail To The Safeties

July 31st, 2025

Big play today by Kaevon Merriweather.

When you think of Bucs safeties, obviously, one thinks of Antoine Winfield.

However, in practice today, Day 7 of Bucs Training Camp 2025, Joe thought a pair of backup safeties made key plays.

The first was rookie Shilo Sanders. Baker Mayfield threw to fellow rookie Emeka Egbuka, who has been doing virtually nothing but making play after play after play each and every day. This time, at least, Egbuka got stopped.

Sanders saw right where Egbuka was going, up the left seam. Sanders simply just got in Egbuka’s way. It wasn’t interference, but it was enough to slow Egbuka where he couldn’t get to the ball.

And as soon as the play was finished, Sanders began doing the ol’ Vernon Hargreaves umpire’s safe sign to signal an incomplete pass.

Then came Kaevon Merriweather’s turn. In a two-minute drill, Merriweather told Joe after practice he read that Kyle Trask was trying to run. He’d seen it before and believed Trask was going to throw over the middle.

Merriweather was right. Trask did throw over the middle and Merriweather stepped up, got the pass, and housed it.

“It always feels good with the ball in your hands,” Merriweather said.

Merriweather said his pick was just what Bucs coach Todd Bowles has strongly stressed all offeseason: The secondary must get more interceptions.

With a strong pass rush and reading the QB’s eyes, our safeties can feast.

    813BucBoi,

The team just uploaded a clip of Tykee picking a pass on in the front-right corner of the endzone. Tip drilled the ball with one hand, and finished the play making the catch.

Our safety room should be legit, my thing is who stays if Izien is takes up a roster spot as a DB. I personally think Sanders stays over Roberts and we cut the most likely to clear the wire. Practice squad should be as talented as it’s ever been

He makes a play (at least) every practice.

Agree but all this talent will really challenge Jason’s skill in sneaking them past waivers and onto the P.S. The other teams will be salivating around the Bucs waiver wire.

I commented in another post, that I don’t envy the coaches having to mull over the roster when it’s time for cuts.

Safety room should be easy because there’s only 1 big money player and the rest of the group are guys with <4 yrs of experience. My thing is once the 4 to keep are established, will that result in a veteran player from elsewhere on the roster to get cut so we don't have to gamble on the wire.

If I'm not mistaken waiver priority is just the draft order inverted, with teams who didn't pick in the 1st round placed by their W-L standing. Us winning the NFCS keeps us in the bottom third of that list. Should be interesting, even Merriweather was cut casualty last season and we had to sign him back mid-season

    thanks for the info!!!!!!

JJ Roberts has 4.41 speed, can play Nickel, FS, SS
He’s a beast on special teams, had 14 PDs at Marshall last season
I think he will showcase his talents during preseason games

    My prediction,
    He makes the team

  9. Go Bucs Says:

@ LakelandBuc I’ve been anticipating any news on JJ Roberts! Have you or Joe seen or heard anything about JJ?

    I think we keep 10 db’s….
    CB: McCollum, Dean, Morrison, Hall
    S: Winfield, Smith, Izien, Roberts
    NB: Parrish, Victor
    Just my take…..

The NFL needs to have 60 man rosters!

    Employ more men!

    They can easily afford it!
