Mike Glennon Has Regrets

July 15th, 2025

Joe spoke recently on the Ira Kaufman Podcast about the unique way in which Jameis Winston views his Tampa Bay legacy.

So Joe thinks it’s fair to give Mike Glennon a little equal time.

The former Bucs starting quarterback and 2013 third-round draft pick is out of the game after a 6-25 record as a starter, including losses in his final 10 starts.

Reflecting on his 10-year NFL career on Tuffy Talk, Glennon admitted that he wanted a chance to retain his Bucs starting gig in 2014 through a competition with free agent Josh McCown. But Glennon was denied.

“There were times, especially after my rookie year, I thought I played pretty well and would have liked the opportunity to have kind of competed with Josh [McCown].But Lovie brought Josh in, he had a relationship with him from [their] time in Chicago,” Glennon said.

“…At the end of the day, I have to take ownership, you know, there’s always room to play better.”

Glennon’s comments are another reminder of how far the Bucs organization has come. The Bucs made Baker Mayfield compete for a gig two summers ago, and his résumé was light years better than that of career loser McCown, who came to the Bucs at 35 years old.

Can anyone imagine Buccaneers Ring of Honor general manager Jason Licht being a part of such a nightmare ever again? Joe can’t.

I’ll never forget one game on 3rd down when Glennon escaped the pocket and ran to the sideline toward the 1st down marker. A defender was closing in on him and instead of reaching for the 1st, he pull back and ran out of bounds short of the 1st.

That’s his Bucs career, he played scared and never showed improvement. But he got a big payday from the Bears so I’m sure life is good for him.

Sadly that is THE play that we all remember. Likeable guy, probably got as much out of his career as he was going to achieve with his talent and “courage”.

  3. FilthyAnimal Says:

Lovie was clueless. His arrogance made people love to hate him.

Indeed his arrogance was offputting for sure. Some people can get away with arrogance but it’s rare although one fellow has certainly parleyed arrogance into a top job and popularity. Go figure.

  5. Aqualung Says:

The biggest regret I have is that Dumdumnik wasted a 3rd round pick on a guy whose ceiling was evident if you ever watched him play football in college against real competition. His last year of college, NC State had SEC bottom feeders Vandy and Ole Miss (I think) on their schedule. He threw 8 picks in those two games and lost both.

No one should be surprised that he sucked so hard in the NFL, but as someone said, he’s got bank and a hottie to go along with all that. So Glennon should be sending Dumforknik Christmas presents every year in perpetuity.

    SOMETHING THAT BOTHERS ME
Since y’all are on the topic of Lovie Smith … Lovie’s son is in [Joe cannot find any record of him in a federal prison, or a prison of any sort. He definetly was charged with, among other things, offenses related to prostitution, sex trafficking and money laundering. — Joe] for pimping. [Joe doesn’t want to get sued here as that’s hearsay, sorry. — Joe].

Regardless, I’ve always been dumbfounded by NFL coaches with delinquent sons. I won’t name names but it’s not uncommon. Their fathers are head coaches. They get paid millions to coach younger men on how to be successful. When so many positive sports traits carry over to regular life, how are they not coaching their sons to be successful? It’s confusing.

Conversely, Dirk Koetter’s son has been an assistant for the Texas Longhorns and now the South Carolina Gamecocks. I met Dirk and his son at Portland State. Super nice family.

Joe’s heard all kinds of stories about Lovie’s kid (the bad one). Seemed like a real scumbag from (many) stories Joe heard.

  8. garro Says:

Lovie was a disaster. Could have taken Licht out the door with him but thank God they had sense enough to get rid of the right guy and realize he was out of his depth. Athough Schiano was almost as bad.

    Go Bucs

  9. Aqualung Says:

Lovie brought Licht in, then Licht fired Lovie, just to be clear.

Schiano was one of Dumdumnik’s many, many tarded decisions and why the Duminik can be found fetching coffee and babbling on XM’s NFL network.

  10. David Says:

Still do not believe Baker had to “compete” for the job over Trask, the forever backup who was not even activated the majority of his career.

  11. stpetebucsfan Says:

OK David I’ll bite. Why do you find it hard to believe that Trask wasn’t given a real chance?

Are you saying even though the coaches thought Trask gave the Bucs the best chance to win they took a poorer selection in Baker just because of his “name”?

  12. Nano107 Says:

He don’t have regrets he made 32 million
I bet he don’t regret that

  13. Mike Johnson Says:

Glenn had a nice little career as a backup QB. He made decent cash. He lasted as long as he did because he played his string out and kept his mouth shut. A whole lotta guys with minimal talent like him did not last past one yr in the league.

  14. Warren Brooks Lynch Says:

“Lovie brought Licht in, then Licht fired Lovie, just to be clear.”

HCs don’t hire GMs, owners do.
GMs don’t fire HCs, owners do.

    Just to be clearer

  15. Aqualung Says:

Lovie accepted the job on the basis he had full control. Glazers hired Lovie, Lovie hired the rest.

Glazers certainly had alignment with Licht on the firing of Lovie and promoting of Koetter to support Jameis, but Licht did the deed and hasn’t looked back.

Look it up if you can use Google and read.

  16. Joe Says:

HCs don’t hire GMs, owners do.
GMs don’t fire HCs, owners do.

Lovie was hired and given full control — with the Glazer Family having right of final refusal.

Lovie wanted a guy from the Cowboys to be GM. Glazers weren’t overwhelmed after the interview. Then Lovie offered up Jason Licht. The Glazers liked the interview and hired him.

  17. Warren Brooks Lynch Says:

“Lovie was hired and given full control — with the Glazer Family having right of final refusal.”

“Then Lovie offered up Jason Licht. The Glazers liked the interview and hired him.”

So Lovie referred a guy. His bosses said “no” then Lovie referred another guy, then ownership said “alright”. Surprise, the people holding the check book made the final decision. Full control, until we feel the need to step in is not full control lol

  18. Bucman Says:

We can’t win a Superbowl if our coach always goes for 3 instead of 7.

  19. unbelievable Says:

^ The point is, that both Jason and the other candidate were recommended by Lovie.

@Bee & St. Pete – 100% we will always remember that play (and truthfully I think that same thing happened a few different times with Glennon). He seems like a nice guy and all, but just did not have that competitive fire, and certainly couldn’t put a team on his back. Definition of a Captain Checkdown.

  20. Oneilbuc Says:

Joe come on now every body know that Baker Mayfield was not in a quarterback competition in 2023 because if we was he wouldn’t have been the starter. Todd Bowles done the same thing Lovie did gifted Baker Mayfield the staring job he didn’t earn it . If Pete Carol was our head coach Kyle Trask would have been the starter. So you have don’t have to keep trying to convince us Baker Mayfield earn the staring job according to IRA source Baker was going to be the starter week one and at the time Baker Mayfield had 8 picks to Kyle Trask 1. I know one of the Joe’s hates Lovie Smith but it’s time to stop making up stories about that fake competition. Even one of the Joe’s already said he didn’t believe it was a real competition!! Lol 🤣

  21. ballwasher61 Says:

It was evident to the Glazers who the better hire was Lovie vs Licht. As far as Trask vs Mayfield looks like the right guy is the starting QB by what he’s done, and I thought Trask might have been the starter.

  22. Tony Says:

I always thought he had the potential to be a pretty good QB.

  23. Oneilbuc Says:

Ball. We still don’t know that yet we have no evidence of what so ever that Baker Mayfield was the right pick because Trask haven’t played yet. What if Bledsio never gotten hurt or Bullchect went with him in the first Superbowl they won do we ever see Brady? Because people don’t like to say it but Brady went down on the first drive in the AFC championship game and it was Bledso who beat a good Pittsburgh defense that year. So it’s all about opportunity I’m sure you got undrafted guys that’s better than first round draft picks that never gets a opportunity.

  24. Zoocomics Says:

I will always remember Glennon leading us to win against Pittsburgh…in Pittsburgh.
