Baker Mayfield Vs. Pat Mahomes Vs. Saint Lamar Jackson

July 3rd, 2025

Stunning comparison.

Joe admits to being shocked by this.

Now Joe doesn’t follow the Chiefs closely. Joe’s too busy with Bucs coverage to be obsessed with other NFL teams (Joe tries to keep up with a handful of college teams during the scant recreation time Joe has during football season).

If someone would ask Joe who the best quarterback in the game is, reflexively, Joe would say Pat Mahomes. Who else would be other than maybe Josh Allen?

Trick there is, Allen has yet to conquer Mahomes and the Chiefs in the playoffs. Advantage: Mahomes.

So when FanDuel twittered out stats for Baker Mayfield and Mahomes, Joe started sniffing his coffee mug, thinking someone poured Barrel King Knighted in it.

So color Joe stunned to see the stats below. Mayfield had better numbers than Mahomes, other than with picks (Mayfield had one more than Mahomes).

Wow. Would you ever hear or see this on the four-letter? Of course not. Mayfield plays for the backwards, sun-poisoned unwashed down in Florida. Mahomes is a star!

This also got Joe to thinking, when have you ever heard on one of those hollering shows on FS1, much less the four-letter, note that Saint Lamar Jackson has but one more playoff win than Mayfield?

Joe’s guesses you’ve never heard that on BSPN or FS1. Besides, folks who work in network sports television have apparently signed a clause in their contracts never to utter a discouraging word about Saint Lamar Jackson, or risk being blackballed from the television industry.

Maybe it’s time for these same talking heads to slap some respect on Mayfield’s name.

One thing is PM15 has been doing it since he entered the NFL. BM6 has been great the past 2 seasons. Of course, PM15 has been on a good team all his career. BM6 has been on a good team only the past two seasons. Maybe after another great season, BM6 will get his recognition. Just don’t hold your breath.

  2. Doctor Buc Says:

Paid $1 for Baker to be my fantasy QB last year. I wish they wouldn’t keep talking about him, but it’s also about dang time

  3. Proudbucsfan Says:

I’ll say it again Baker Mayfield is going to be MVP this season. Just sit back and watch it happen.

  4. ModHairKen Says:

Jackson is overrated. He is a more versatile Dan Marino: great stats, no rings.

  5. DBS Says:

Oh No. Someone said something about Lamar being overrated. Onielbuc will come to his rescue.

  6. RASH Says:

lamar jackson will NEVER win a ring. Too much running his legs and mouth. Deserves to be a Raven like that scumbag Ray Lewis. Only good in Baltimore was Ozzie Newsome.Go lamar your a decent running back not smart enough to be a good QB.Ball hog.

  7. Aqualung Says:

Learn to play pass defense, Todd. Hire a consultant. You’re wasting a generationally best franchise offense and costing the Bucs victories.

  8. Fan of the South Says:

Bucs OLine finished 4th or Higher in the 2024 season. chiefs never higher than 10th. Maholmes managed to get to the #1 Seed and advance to the Super Bowl.

Bucs OLine is ranked 2nd this season and the Chiefs are not in the top 10.

Don’t care how many yards the guy throws for he should be kept on a Ryan Tannehill Level where he belongs. Titans were pretty good with R.T in 2020 and 2021, won their Division twice including a #1 seed but didn’t make much noise in the playoffs and were doomed by QB mistakes.

Top 10 teams predicted to win the Super Bowl has 6 NFC teams and the Bucs are not one of them. Why? Because those teams have better QB’s. 3 QB’s predicted to win their first Super bowl in 2025 are Goff, Allen, and Jackson. If Tannehill was still playing in his prime he would not be on that list because he was a good QB just like Mayfield. Nothing Spectacular. Play pretty well until the Peter Principle comes into play.

  9. First Last Says:

I’ve been a Baker truther since 2018 but now I’m afraid he won’t keep getting better and last year was his peak?

  10. Jack Burton Mercer Says:

Who cares? Just win your games. That is the only stat that matters.

  11. Chris O Says:

I don’t care about any of that, just go deep into the playoffs consistently and hopefully get a ring. No first round exits acceptable.

  12. Kenton Smith Says:

Tannehill was pretty good Fan of the South. He and Baker both 2-3 career playoff marks. Very close in td passes and total yardage. The difference of course is Baker has hung those numbers and played less than 70 % of the games Tannehill played. So what you mean is that Tannehill was about 70 percent as good as Baker is. Except Tannehill managed to toss 3 picks in a single playoff game. Just because you spout nonsense Fan of the South doesn’t mean anyone believes a word of your shlt.

  13. Oneilbuc Says:

Man just get to the NFC Championship game!!

  14. LouBucsFan Says:

For those who are disrespecting Lamar Jackson calling him overrated, I love Baker and what he’s done for the Bucs but i’d take Lamar as our quarterback everyday of the week and twice especially on Sundays!!! Y’all can only wish ya had 10% of his abilities…!

  15. JD Still Says:

Let’s see now , what else could We compare between Mahomes and Mayfield, Oh, yea! Super Bowls! ………….oh, ………….wait,………………..,never mind!

  16. Jeebs the Honey Bear Says:

Judging a QB by playoff wins is ludicrous. Football is a team sport. Yes QB is the most important and weighted position, but we know coaching, personnel, and even LUCK also matter. If Mark Andrews doesn’t drop a pass, the Ravens would have advanced last year. If a couple calls went in the Bills direction, they would have advanced. Lamar and Allen are clearly elite QBs who are capable of winning championships.

How about this: if Patrick Mahomes was drafted by the Raiders, how many Super Bowls would he have? Probably ZERO. If Lamar Jackson or Josh Allen was drafted by the Chiefs, how many championships would they have won? Yes these are hypotheticals, but my point being that playoff wins is a silly measure to use.

  17. JimBobBuc Says:

It’s about closing out games and winning. Baker’s stats are also padded by playing 6 games in the worst division in football.

  18. Kenton Smith Says:

LouBucsFan, it’d be tough to argue that. If we’re going to beat Lamar it’s going to be the team doing it. Baker jumped all over Lamar last year opening that game and threw a perfect td pass that Mike dropped or we’d of been ahead 17-0. Instead Mike was hurt on the play and Baker completely lost his composure. The entire team lost their composure. Lamar then went through our defense worse than Cousins ever did. Henry made our defense look like high schoolers. Our QB and our defense started that game as strong as we could have. After losing Godwin we looked the weakest I have seen us look. But our QB and our defense didn’t quit and we got it back together. We hit the Ravens right in the mouth at the git go and let them back up off the mat. Rewatch the game. I think we beat them the next time.

  19. KABucs Says:

The Chiefs could have gone 16 – 1 most likely but fully tanked the last game. Not sure what their injury situation was last season but they had a good defense and they won all the close ones. The only team with a winning record they beat by more than one score last year was Houston and that was a back and forth affair where Stroud through a couple ints. Wasn’t they blow out at all. They also won a few close games against not so good teams. Their defense won them games but their mediocre O line kept them close. Mahomes barely makes mistakes that cost the team the game. That’s the big difference. Love Baker but he can’t do that any longer and he has to lower all turnovers

  20. Davyboy Says:

    Ah yes…so it begins šŸ¤”

  21. Bucs And Them Says:

If Mayfield has another strong season like he did last season, I think he’ll get the respect. If we get to the NFC championship game and he plays well, he will definitely get his deserved respect win or lose. But, it’s on Baker to win these important games that we haven’t been winning. The prime time night games. The games we inevitably lose to inferior opponents. A few playoff games. If he and Grizzard gel, this is all very possible to do. We’ll find out soon enough.

  22. Vanessa Anne Says:

Joe, respectfully, I’ve mentioned this before.

    It’s about two things…

    Eyeballs and W-L records.

NYC, BOS, Philly, WashDC/Balto, Chi-town, Dallas, L.A., San Fran,… those are major media markets.

Lots of eyeballs in those markets so the networks are going go talk about those teams a lot in order to keep the eyeballs glued.

Tampa’s a much larger market than KC.

The difference is W-L record. And frankly, playoff wins help.

Look at what happened in New England after TB12 left. The same thing happened here.

    The wins dropped off.

I agree with you. These stats show the networks should be showing Baker a little more love.

I also agree that it’ll take 3 solid good seasons from Baker before the narrative on him shifts.

But more consistent winning seasons and records better than 10-7 will also help.

  23. Gotti-Dog-05-20-84 Says:

Just because I feel a bit like pontificating today…

I see QB won/loss records tossed around like it was a meaningful stat.
    Two examples in Mayfield’s case:

    2018 Browns vs Jets
Tyrod Taylor starts. Gets injured and is removed early in the first half with
Browns trailing 14-0. Mayfield enters game and the team rallies to win.
Tyrod Taylor is credited with the win

    2022 Rams vs Raiders
John Wolford starts. Plays one series before being removed from game.
Mayfield enters game and Rams rally to win.
John Wolford gets credit for the win.

There are, no doubt, numerous likewise scenarios throughout the league throughout the history of the league. In this regard, baseball gets it right by awarding the win to the pitcher that was in the game when the team gained control of the game….key word…..team.

If the Bucs trotted Vita Vea out there to take the first snap of every game (and only the first snap) guess what? He gets credit for the win or loss regardless of who plays the remainder of the game.

While comparing stats is great fun, it’s also rather subjective. The circumstances and dynamics of each game are unique to THAT particular game. To say that the results of a given play or game would differ if a different player were to be involved in that play or game is pure fantasy level speculation.
Stats are indicators of what players have done in similar, but not identical, situations.
At the end of the day, wins, losses, great stats, poor stats all are a result of the team collective influenced by each individual’s contribution to that collective.

  24. Kenton Smith Says:

Vanessa Anne, always good to see your smart posts. I came to be a Tampa Fan when Baker got here. But I’ve been a football fan for a long time. Used to watch Doug Williams (here and at Washington) and Brad Johnson (here and at Minnesota). Watched as Brady supercharged this team for three years. And all three of those QBs had losing seasons in Tampa. How in the world you lost some of your QBs is baffling. Steve Young? What happened there? Everyone has opinions but it appears to me that Baker is the only QB in Tampa Bay history that hasn’t went through a losing season. And I don’t see that happening in the near future. So there’s that. Folks who haven’t followed Baker Mayfield closely are beginning to see. He’s a winner. And he’s found a home. And he’s got a team that isn’t going to stand for 10 win seasons. The majority of these Bucs fans don’t know what it’s like to have a consistent winner. They are about to find out though.

  25. Joseph C Simmons Says:

What makes Mahomes the best QB in the league is he’s had mediocre receivers since Tyreek left, and still, when the Chiefs are behind by a TD and he has the ball with under a minute left, Kansas City might as well go ahead and chalk up a win. He’s insanely clutch.

Mayfield is slowly becoming that guy, but he hasn’t done it to the level Mahomes has.

  26. Oneilbuc Says:

Joseph. Not at 30 years old he is who he is at this point of his career.

  27. Pickgrin Says:

    Mayfield was a top 3 QB in 2024 statistically….

3rd in yards – 4500 (Behind Burrow and Goff)
2nd in TDs – 41 (Behind Burrow and tied with Jackson)
3rd in completion % – 71.4% (Behind Tagovailoa and Goff)
4th in passer rating – 106.8 (Behind Jackson, Goff and Burrow)

Only Burrow and Goff were better passers than Mayfield last year – and not by much…

Now of course Allen and Jackson in particular and also Mahomes bring major intangibles to the table that these stats don’t account for – but Mayfield also showed a good bit of that himself making plays with his feet when necessary frequently throughout the season….

Mayfield had more INTs than is acceptable – which does factor into comparisons as well….

All considered though – I’d say Mayfield overall was either the 6th or at worst 7th best QB in the NFL in 2024….

Something the Buccaneers have never had or seen in 50 years save for 2 years with Tom Brady.

  28. Beeej Says:

The last 2 years the Chiefs offense looks like it was designed by Woody Hayes, three yards and a cloud of dust. On paper Mahomes. looks like the most average quarterback in the league, the only time he really comes into play is when they’re tied or behind at the end of the game. THEN, there is none better. They have a great defense though.

I stupidly drafted Mahomes in the first round 2 years ago, I finally cut him by the middle of the season. He doesn’t really throw the ball anymore. On the other hand, Baker was the fifth best point getter in fantasy football last year

  29. ChiBuc Says:

Say all you want about Lamar, you’ll hate him until he’s on your fantasy team. Then, you love him

  30. BakerFan Says:

I am in the part of country where Chiefs are on every weekend. Mahomes will drive you crazy and I feel one day the officiating and his chance taking will come to the end. You put Mahomes under pressure and he makes big mistakes… that is a fact.

  31. Beeej Says:

Well it certainly isn’t because he’s good looking

  32. Joe Says:

Judging a QB by playoff wins is ludicrous.

Joe thinks the total opposite. The great quarterbacks win the biggest games. Playoff games are big games — only the Super Bowl is bigger.

Quarterbacks who lead their teams to a bunch of playoff wins are generally the very best.

  33. Pickgrin Says:

    Joe Says:
“Quarterbacks who lead their teams to a bunch of playoff wins are generally the very best”

By that measure – Terry Bradshaw, Joe Theisman and Donovan McNabb were far superior to Dan Marino…. Did you not catch the word, “generally?”–Joe

    Ridiculous criteria to measure QBs….

Football is the ultimate TEAM game…..

Which is exactly WHY Baker was the 6th best QB in the league last year… because he had a stellar offense surrounding him…. If Mayfield had started for the Titans last year – he would be something like the 14th best QB statistically.

Its also why the Bucs only won 10 games and lost in the first round of the playoffs last year – because the defense was like 28th or whatever defending the pass – in a passing league….

  34. GoneGator Says:

I’ll never understand why people who call themselves fans of a sports team would want to spend so much time on a fan site just to repeatedly criticize a player (usually Baker) or a coach (always Todd) in every posts comment section.. And then get their panties in a wad when people say something about it or point out holes in the narrative they’re trying to spin.

Weird as hell to me but whatever floats your boat

  35. Drunk Bucs Fan Says:

I second Vanessa’s comment about one more year of high quality performance might finally get some of the stink off Baker’s name from his one season with a wrecked shoulder followed by a season coached by Matt Ruhle.

I know being a Bucs fan can give me a skewed opinion, but it almost seems like there are talking TV heads out there acting offended they have to say something nice about the guy. No matter what you think of him as a player right now, 90% of everyone was wrong about him two years ago.

    Including me.

  36. Oneilbuc Says:

Gone Gator. You have to honest about what’s going on on the field now I know we have 3 different types of fans on here. You have the Baker boies and the only thing they care about is Baker having a good stats they really don’t care if the bucs as a team win . Then you got the fans that’s just happy barley winning a trash division and losing in the playoffs the first or second round and they’re satisfied with just doing that. Then you got the fans like me that don’t care about Baker Mayfield having good stats and that’s not satisfied with barley winning a trash division just to lose in the first or second round playoffs we want championships and Superbowls. So it all depends where you fall at between those 3 types of fans. To me it’s NFC Championship or bust this year no excuses. And next year it’s Superbowl or bust!!

  37. Davyboy Says:

Weird as hell to me šŸ˜‚ šŸ˜‚

  38. Davyboy Says:

Mahomes doesn’t throw the ball like he used to because for 2 years now he hasnt had a top 5 OL like he has had since he was drafted. His pass protection has been more like the average quaterback has had. An OL makes or breaks the offense, I don’t care how great you think your quaterback is without that top rated line you spend all your time running from 290lbs guys that run a 4.6. Yeah that changes you mental peace.

  39. GoneGator Says:

    @Oneilbuc

Appreciate you not resorting to name calling in your response to me… I’m not used to that šŸ™‚

For the record, I won’t be happy with just “barely winning a trash division” either. I don’t think us so called snowflakes feel that way as a rule. But some of us do appreciate that it IS an accomplishment, especially considering the circumstances.

The difference in my eyes is that some of us appreciate the factors, and time, that goes into building a team that can compete for and win a Superbowl.

And some others think we should just be able to win one regardless of any other factors that actually matter. The biggest critics disregard retirements, injuries, lack of $ for free agents, universal expectations (which we’ve greatly exceeded) that we’d spend the last 2 seasons in the bottom of the league, etc etc

Complete teams are BUILT over a period of years usually and we have been rebuilding (while remaining competitive) for the last few years…..and we’re getting close !!!

  40. MadMax Says:

I remember keyboard knee capping a lot of Baker haters here….hmmm, memories, lol

  41. Drunk Bucs Fan Says:

Can we all be honest with each other? Aren’t we all just really sooooo ready for the training camp to start so we can stop arguing over rehashed stories of last year?

Sorry Joe, I know this must be a tough time for content. We appreciate the effort.

  42. Marky mark Says:

Mahomes got lucky with a great coach. Baker had to dig himself out from under the,Browns trash heap. Now can we be less predictable on defense. Listen to your DC more.

I know you think we understood what you thought you said but what you thought you thought you said isn’t necessarily what you meant.

  44. Davyboy Says:

That’s the whole point, isn’t it Marky Mark!! Some just can’t come to terms with that reality though.

  45. Davyboy Says:

    And that heap was deep

  46. Oneilbuc Says:

Gipper. I know which one you are you are with the Baker Mayfield fan club you don’t really care about the bucs winning championships because you’re a Browns fan. So I know you understand that!!

  47. Lee Go Bucs Says:

As far as the interceptions go, if the defense wasn’t so bad last year you have to imagine there would be less ints. But when pretty much ever offense can score on our defense in a minute or less, pretty much every drive, then it kinda takes away from the ability to make the safe days, you have to try the dangerous ones in order to stay in the game.

  48. Oneilbuc Says:

How about all of those 3 and outs our offense had in some of those games?

  49. Trask To The Future Says:

    STATS CAN ā€œLIEā€ā€¦

Raw total stat numbers don’t tell the full story of NFL QBs.

I dare you to do a By Quarter analysis of MAYFIELD’s QB ratings and Stats. Spoiler Alert: you’re not going to like what you find.

Mayfield’s 4th quarter ratings & stats are far superior to this first 3 quarters. It’s not because he has all this come from behind wins, it’s because in many games his poor performances early in games led to multi possession leads by opponents that soften their Defenses late in games and Mayfield racked up lots of his yardage and TDs in those 4th quarters.

This is a fact. Any of us that actually closely watch the games has seen many games where Mayfield struggles to pass for 100 yards in the 1st half of games only to finish with 300+ yards in a loss.

Mayfield is a decent QB that’s likable and plays with a lot of heart, but he’s not Elite regardless of what his ā€œtotalā€ stats look like.

  50. Davyboy Says:

Stats CAN lie if you present them in a certain light. They don’t inherently lie.
