Report: Steelers Sniffing A Trey Palmer Trade

June 2nd, 2025

Joe finds this report somewhat funny considering who calls plays for the Steelers and the presence of Scotty Miller on the Pittsburgh roster.

A seemingly legit Steelers outlet, Steelers now, claimed confirmation Friday of Pittsburgh’s “interest” in Trey Palmer, the third-year Bucs receiver. Palmer was buried on the bench last season after 39 catches as a rookie.

The original report came from Zachary Smith, a Steelers Now co-host on YouTube.

Pittsburgh is hurting for receiver talent. They traded for D.K Metcalf in March and then dealt George Pickens to the Cowboys in May. That may not turn out to be much of an upgrade, and receiver talent in Pittsburgh is thin after Metcalf.

Miller, a Bucs Super Bowl-season hero, had five catches for Pittsburgh last season. He spent the 2023 season with the Falcons playing for playcaller Artie Smith, who is now the Steelers’ offensive coordinator.

Smith is known for his plodding, run-first offense and a fascination for Marcus Mariota. Pittsburgh only scored more than 20 points in seven games last year, including the postseason.

Joe would have no issue trading Palmer, though Joe would have no problem keeping him. Palmer was unimpressive as a punt returner last season and he’s never been in sync with Baker Mayfield on deep balls.

Still, 39 catches as a rookie (in 2023) with impressive speed means Palmer has a lot of potential. He just turned 24 years old.

    For tj twat

  2. Aqualung Says:

Skeptical. Palmer sucks and everyone in the league knows who he is now. Licht might get a ham sandwich on stale bread for him. Maybe Eggie can help light a fire under his Dardenesque hind end.

  3. Scott Says:

He has the right kind of attitude that the Steelers desperately need

  4. George R Says:

Can we get a 6th rounder for him?

  5. Mort Says:

I’d take half a bag of Doritos for him. If we can get any draft pick, that’s a massive W. He shouldn’t make this team in 2025 regardless.

  6. Bobby M. Says:

Palmer could be shade for other player inquiries…..maybe Bucs and Steelers are talking with bigger names in mind. There’s rumors of Watt being available…..Dean has certainly been in the discussion since he’s in his last year and we’ve reloaded on CBs in this draft. Guessing we’ll have to give up some young talent along with a proven starter. Licht doesn’t like to give up picks, i’m sure he’d rather package up players to make a move. Time will tell….if we got Watt, Reddick, Yaya along with Walker and Braswell……that’s a pick your poison scenario for any offense.

  7. Shilo Sanders Says:

    I liked Scotty miller

  8. BuckyBuc Says:

    do it.

  9. BucsFanSince1996 Says:

@Aqualung, Palmer made some amazing catches in training camp during his rookie season. It’s a bit early to claim that he sucks.

I don’t have any problem with the Bucs trading him, not because he sucks, but because we just drafted two WR’s and we can’t keep everyone.

  10. #1bucsfan Says:

Send them Palmer and a 1st for watt. That would be a dangerous defense with watt and reddick on either side of vea n kancey.

  11. Obvious One Says:

Though I Seriously doubt they would do it, a 5th rounder and it’s a done deal. We have no Real incentive to get rid of him “just for fun”. However, we drafted him in the Sixth round and a 5th rounder would inspire a move the steelers way.

It Would open up the 53 for a different position of need for us and the upgraded round would give us a shot at an even better guy..

Other than that?? No less than a 5th for our speedster (of which ” the speed” hasn’t been really noticeable at all)

  12. buc4evr Says:

Bucs need to keep Palmer and develop him. Injuries to Evans and Godwin are a real probability.

  13. Jeffrey Becker Says:

“quickest first step” Palmer? sure why not. what can we get?

  14. Usfbucs Says:

Do it, if they want him, make the move.

  15. Dew Says:

They may be will to trade LB Peyton Wilson for Palmer. That would be great. Even if we have to throw in a late pick too.

  16. Chip offllll the bucs Says:

I worry about our veteran duos health also, however we have credible depth. Make the move, ask a 4th settle on a 5th rounder, he still has potential to develop for them.

  17. Teacherman Says:

His body hasn’t evolved since he arrived.

He hasn’t gotten stronger or bigger.

I’d take Ryan Miller and Rakim Jarrett over him any day.

    Why?

Because the #1 ability of a WR is their ability to take a hit!

    Not even catch a ball.

Because if they are scared to take a hit, they can’t catch or block or do anything!

    Because they are playing scared!!!

  18. GoneGator Says:

I would get rid of him if we could get any value at all back. He’s probably our 7th or 8th best receiver. He might benefit from a new start – we won’t notice his absence.

  19. Kenton Smith Says:

I don’t think Palmer and Shep can both make the opening day roster. Shep has some team enhancing intangibles that Palmer just doesn’t have. Palmer has youth and speed that someone needs to try and develop. Hoping Palmer can have a reset and Shep can have a Ring! And maybe we can get us a 5th rounder next year to boot.

    ^^^^^

His catch against Green Bay is one of the best Bucs catches of all time.

  21. Fred McNeil Says:

I liked Scotty Miller too. I also liked Justin Watson

  22. Fred McNeil Says:

Anyway, I don’t care if we trade Palmer or keep him. He has a bit of potential, but that just means he hasn’t done anything yet.

  23. Bucs4Ever Says:

We have GODWIN! Trey is expendable.

  24. Jmarkbuc Says:

    Fred

Man, did things work out for Watson? Three Super Bowl rings!

  25. PresidentBowles Says:

Throw Bowles in the trade as a sweetener.

Oh wait, that would hurt the Steelers defense.

    Never mind.

  26. Marine Buc Says:

    Meh…

    Trade him for what?

Just keep him and let him compete.

What happens if 156 LB. Tez Johnson gets injured?

We will need another P/K returner…

  27. PresidentBowles Says:

    Who’s moderating this board? Geobbles?

    [What’s your problem? — Joe]

  28. Daniel Dream Says:

Not surprised the Steelers would ask… they have few offensive weapons and we have a plethora. Palmer might not play much if we stay healthy at WR but he’s good depth certainly if he’s needed. Is it worth a trade? Possibly since we have such depth there he might be surplus to the cause… on the other hand, we wanted to make sure we have depth at WR to avoid what happened last season, so in that case why trade him?

  29. Bucs Guy Says:

Bucs will keep 6 x WR on the roster. He’s #5 to #8 depending upon how you evaluate. T. Johnson, R. Jarrett, S. Shepherd and Palmer are fighting for 2 slots. The other 2 go practice squad or are cut. IMO they keep Johnson and cut Shepherd due to age. Nobody will pick him up, so the Bucs should tell him to be ready if there’s an injury. That means the last slot comes down to Jarrett or Palmer. Neither have stood out, so if you could get a 4th or 5th rd pick for him now from the Steelers, pull the trigger JL.

  30. JimBobBuc Says:

Palmer seems to be the only WR with scary speed ( 4.3???) so I would consider keeping him if BMac thinks there’s hope in his development.

  31. Mike Johnson Says:

I wouldn’t take anything less than a 4th rounder for him.

  32. AliveGator Says:

I hear Mike McCarthy is still available to be HC.

  33. unbelievable Says:

Trade Palmer and next years 2nd rounder for TJ Watt.

Okay, now back to reality: we’d be lucky to get a 6th round pick for Palmer.

  34. Aqualung Says:

Hey, Bucsfan1996 – Kenny Bell looked all pro in training camp, too. So did Darden.

Dude got rocked a few times and has shrunk away from the game. I’d rather keep him than trade him for a ham sandwich, but a ham sandwich is all Licht is getting offered for the guy.

Again – coaching matters. Maybe he hasn’t gotten what he’s needed, like some other players from this staff.

  35. Joe Says:

Hey, Bucsfan1996 – Kenny Bell looked all pro in training camp, too. So did Darden.

Easy. Egbuka — when in college in real games — looked just like Chris Godwin. He produced against some of the best there were. Jaelon Darden and to a lesser degree Kenny Bell were Hail Marys. Darden played in Conference USA — just a little bit different than starting for a national champion.

Yes, it’s underwear football. Yes, it can be very misleading. But Egbuka and Darden, Joe believes, are apples and oranges.

  36. Joe Says:

I hear Mike McCarthy is still available to be HC.

USF has an opening or something?

  37. Aqualung Says:

Joe – I was comparing Palmer to Darden. I was responding to a poster who said how great Palmer looked in TC, I reminded of Darden and K Bell. I’m a HUGE fan of the Eggie pick.

  38. Brandon Says:

The football savants in the comments… so many dumb fans. I’d give a 6th round pick if you guys would STFU and quit embarrassing the rest of us.

  39. Rod Munch Says:

I’d be shocked if they got more than a conditional 7th – but if you can get anything, take it.

  40. David Says:

Get whatever draft pick you can for him.
Evans, Godwin, McMillan, Egbuka, Shephard, Tez and Kam Johnson, Jarrett…. Their depth is looking pretty incredible.

  41. adam from ny Says:

weird…maybe they somehow see him as a tyler lockett type who can be a nice fit out there with metcalf…?…who knows…

what can you get for him…that’ll be interesting…

and scotty has never really gotten his feet reset after the solid first half of the season that brady arrived…seems like once brady said nah, give me AB, scotty fell into the abyss and has been there ever since

  42. adam from ny Says:

can we swap him for a decent ILB…………? 🙂

and i would even include miller in there as well..when his number was called last year, he usually did a little something
(the token wh!te boy receiver lol)…

if we keep 7 that means 2 to the PS…

and if you add palmer in as well, that’s 10 deep at the position…that’s outright craziness

  44. adam from ny Says:

kenny bell X the apalachian state kidd X darden = ?

I’m amazing at how Pittsburg has had just such a god awful offense for 5+ years it seems

Yeah, from Big Bend last few years.
