Another “Career Year” For Baker Mayfield?

May 12th, 2025

There is zero doubt Baker Mayfield had a career year last season with 41 touchdowns and 4,500 yards passing with a league-leading 16 interceptions mixed in to his stunning 71.4 percent completion rate.

Mayfield was fantastic, and he even rushed for 378 yards, more than double his previous season high.

Now one could argue 2023 also was a career year for Mayfield, though it was on par with what he notched in 2020 with the Browns. And those Browns played in what was the NFL’s best division.

Regardless, it’s hard for Joe to imagine Mayfield improving in 2025 — because he set the bar so darn high.

Heralded NFL writer Dan Pompei, of pay-per-view TheAthletic.com, sees it differently.

“It isn’t difficult to envision a career year for Baker Mayfield, seeing he should benefit from a healthy Chris Godwin and rookie Emeka Egbuka,” Pompei wrote today. “The unknown with the Bucs is how much, if at all, they will miss offensive coordinator Liam Coen. They need Josh Grizzard to push the right buttons as Coen’s replacement.”

Ok. Hey, why not? Bring on another career year, Baker!

It is conceivable that Mayfield can cut his picks total in half and throw a few more touchdowns, but damn, last year was impressive.

Pompei went on to say the Bucs have improved — because of their defense.

“If the 2025 Bucs played the 2024 Bucs, the 2025 Bucs would win, assuming talent decided the game, ” he wrote. “The new Bucs are better equipped to affect quarterbacks because they have more pass rush and better coverage, thanks to additions such as Haason Reddick, David Walker, Benjamin Morrison and Jacob Parrish.”

    He’s my pick for mvp

  2. Obvious Says:

If he can cut down the picks to 10 or less he will be in the MVP conversation. The tds are going to be there with this arsenal.

  3. Drunk Bucs Fan Says:

Yep. Two more wins and 50% less TDs and that is an MVP candidate. Does it happen? We shall see.

Also, the Bucs pass rush being better is a case of simple math:

Reddick > JTS. The only question is how much improvement.

  4. BillyBucco Says:

It’s way more complicated than Reddick > JTS.

  5. Drunk Bucs Fan Says:

Do tell. Who have they lost, and who have they gained?

    I said improved, not great.

  6. Josh Says:

Baker Mayfield’s early career has shown both flashes of brilliance and struggles, but looking at the trajectory of Drew Brees (similar size and build, and arguably similar playing style) offers a promising outlook for his future.

Brees didn’t hit his stride until his fourth season, and it wasn’t until he joined the New Orleans Saints in 2006 that he became one of the NFL’s all-time greats. His early years were filled with inconsistency and growing pains, much like Mayfield’s first few seasons in Cleveland. Let’s be honest: that Panthers team was a dumpster fire, and he played his way into Tampa that first week in LA. However, just as Brees steadily improved year after year, so has Baker. By his fourth season, Brees was putting up elite numbers, ultimately leading the Saints to a Super Bowl victory. Baker was hurt playing through injury in Cleveland.

But Mayfield’s 2024 season, marked by a career-high 41 touchdowns and a passer rating of 106.8, signals his potential for a breakout year. If he continues on this path and improves his decision-making and consistency, there’s every reason to believe his best days are ahead, much like Brees’ peak years in New Orleans. With a strong 2025 season, Mayfield could be primed for a similar rise into elite status in the next few seasons.

Just as Brees’ best years came in his late 20s and early 30s, Mayfield’s prime might still be on the horizon—so long as he continues to grow from the lessons of his early career. We might only be scratching the surface of what he is capable of as a QB. 2025 looks to be a very exciting season for the Bucs, especially with the new offensive weapons and returning talent.

Faker career year = Losing to a rookie QB in round 1.

Regular season stats are just fluff.

When it matters the most he finds a way to lose.

I don’t know much, but I know that he will crumble under the pressure.

He’s 1-2 in the postseason as a Buc. Not very impressive at all.

Baker Mayfield’s early career has shown both flashes of brilliance and struggles, but looking at the trajectory of Drew Brees…..

One certain JBF commenter shouted from the rooftops when the announcement was made that Baker was headed to Tampa that the Bucs had found their version of Drew Brees. Only TWO other commenters agreed. Ira’s comment was ” I’m not going there yet”.

JOSH IS VERY LATE TO THE PARTY !!!

  11. Hodad Says:

Pompei fails to mention what really could make Baker have a career year. That would be our offensive line. They have a whole year under their belt together. Barton was a rookie first time NFL center. Wirfs was still getting use to LT, Mauch got stronger, and more experience at guard, and Bedeson was new to the line. If this O line makes a big leap like I think they should, there will be a lot of players having a career year.

  12. heyjude Says:

Cheering for Baker to have the best year of his career this season. So happy we got him. He was the perfect QB after Brady.

  13. toopanca Says:

Do the Bucs need Baker to have a career year? Hopefully not!

If the D is better/healthy in general, and if the OL and WRs are better/healthy, hopefully there will be games where the Bucs are ahead early and big, and Sean Tucker is on the field running down the clock.

That will not help Baker have a career year for personal stats. But, hopefully it will help Baker have a career year in team stats like games won in a season and playoffs games won.

  14. Aqualung Says:

    Heyjude- right on.

  15. Vinny from Vermont Says:

Is there a common denominator (or two) that Mayfields’ interceptions have in common that he could focus on fixing/avoiding to show a significant improvment?
I have not seen anything in this regards. Anyone?

  20. First Last Says:

It really depends on whether Grizzard will give the tuddies to Baker or to the running backs. He has to feed Chris Godwin and Mike Evans to make them happy, so I’m assuming Baker will have a lot of tuddies. Unlike where with the Browns they just fed the ball to Chubb or Hunt and they would run it in for them. There were even passing situations with 1 yard at the goal where Baker would pop it out to Mike or someone else. I mean he really made Baker happy with those tuddies. It helps a quarterbacks confidence when you let him score, and it makes Mike happy. Do an article on how many touchdowns were thrown from 10 yards or less and I bet it is a big chunk.

  21. Gerald Says:

If Baker can cut out those 2 bad quarters of football where he threw 3 ints each then he’s in the conversation for mvp.

  22. J Says:

Bakers numbers would’ve been even more impressive if Mike and Chris weren’t sidelined… that’s not to mention what we would have looked like if Dean, Kancey and Goedeke had been healthy. Its probable that Parrish and Morrison solve our issues with Dean, and that Egbuka is plug and play. There’s no reason not to believe Baker has another stellar year.

  23. J Says:

Yes, all predicated on Grizzards transition and comfortability calling plays.

  24. heyjude Says:

  25. Fan of the South Says:

2020 Browns went 3-3 in the Division with 2 against the 4 win Bengals and 1 against the Steelers resting starters w/ Mason Rudolph behind center.

Carved up the Powerful NFC East where the Commanders won the Division with 7 wins and the others finished at 6, 6, and 4 wins.

Sprinkle in a 4 win Titans and a 1 win Jags.

To their credit they did beat a couple 11 win teams that were spotted 2 wins each by the 4 win Texans and 1 win Jags.

Besides the 3 losses in the division the Browns lost to the 1 win Jets ans put up 6 points against the 8 win Raiders.

Give a guy props for yards and TD’s but to say it was some spectacular feat is really stretching it.

With that schedule the Browns could have won 11 with Mac Jones.

  26. SlyPirate Says:

Now that we have a RB and a defense, I’m guessing Baker doesn’t need to have the same type of year. Just be efficient.

  27. Rod Munch Says:

I don’t really care too much about the INTs, but if he’s got a healthy Godwin all year, Evans continues to be Evans, McMillan continues to improve and you add e2, then perhaps he does improve a bit. However the big question mark is Coen and how much he’s going to be missed. It cannot be overstated how impressive the play calling was last year, and how Coen really kept defenses off balance, which opened up the run game and the passing game. Hopefully Grizz isn’t 2022 Bryan Leftwich, who thought he’d show everyone how smart he was by ruining Arians playbook with stupid, predictable calls, and awful adjustments. If Grizz is as smart as the label he’s been given, he’ll know to just keep doing what was working.

By your logic Baker did a better job because he won the division. Brady only won the SB. Yeah, that checks out.

Get those meds refilled dawg. Baker will never make the SB. Too many turnovers in key moments with the game on the line.

    “I don’t know much, …”

Exactly, you admit it… now stop typing.

It’ll all come down to injuries. Hopefully the pendulum swings the other way and our low injury year is 2025 after a heavy injury here in 2024. Skies the limit for Baker if injuries are light to the wide receivers and nonexistent to the O-line.

  33. KABucs Says:

… and the running game needs to stay consistent with a healthy Bucky.

  34. HC Grover Says:

Bakefield should be improved this year.

  35. adam from ny Says:

if baker has a career year…

    we add another linebacker…kyzir white…

and stay fairly healthy throughout…….we are real time superbowl contenders…

who’s better than us right now on paper in the nfc…?

    maybe detroit and philly…….

and will barkley have another season like last year…?…probably not

  36. ATLBuc Says:

I don’t care if Baker throws for 6000 yards next year just don’t let it end in a season ending turnover like the last two seasons. At least let us build up a large enough lead that a playoff turnover will not matter.

  37. LANshark Says:

Vinnie fromn Vermont – there are 2 reasons for Baker’s INTs.

#1 – he believes that he can rifle the ball into any window, and most of the time, he can. MOST of the time. The trick is learning when he cannot.

#2 – some of his INTs came because he protection was falling apart, and/or a receiver ran the wrong route. Hopefully, neither is an issue this year.

ATLBuc: Yes, and if our defense made Washington punt EVEN ONCE, we would have had that cushion… that’s not on Baker

  38. JustVisiting Says:

My bet is the defense will do a better job keeping opponents out of the endzone, Baker will feel less pressure to perform heroics, and his turnovers will drop significantly.

  39. Kenton Smith Says:

Vinny from Vermont. A common denominator or 2. 10 picks in wins. 6 picks in losses 1 of which was stolen from McMillans hands in the end zone which probably should have won the Cowboys game. Another rookie had one hit him in the hands. Should at least have knocked it down. Several or more were fired into openings in zones that youngsters ran through said openings in zones. In 2 years Zero pick sixes. Interceptions way up when starting receivers were out at same time. Takes time to develop chemistry with practice squad receivers. Even when as the QB your reputation is one of the strongest, most accurate arms in the league. Stats back this up. Worst team in NFL history he QBs 13 games(7-5-1) and throws the most touchdowns by a rookie in NFL history. You folks who harp on these interceptions are looking for something….anything…

  40. Gipper Says:

    ToddBowles#1,

You are entitled to say what you want to here regardless of how stupid you sound. Worse than sounding stupid, you sound creepy.

  41. Pryda30 Says:

Baker could’ve went for 5000 yards last season. I just want him to keep the percentage high and the decision smart, which would mean less an INT’s and therefore he’d be firmly in the MVP conversation. This is an easy 10 win team.

  42. Bucblind Says:

Todd#2 doesn’t leave me a choice. 105.9= the greatest playoff passer rating of all time. Better than anybody down through history. When the pressure is on, Bake is obviously at his best.
If #2 knew anything at all about football he would know Dan Quinn is the reason we lost to Washington. When a coach keeps your number of passess at 50% of what your season average is, you are going to lose. It’s amazing we only lost by 3 points.
105.9 vs. 92.5 is as ELITE as ELITE can get, #1 in the history of the game!! Give that man the ball and get out of his way!! 😁 🤣 😂

  43. Bucblind Says:

Hey Todd#2 just what do you think about Mayfield’s 2nd place passer rating of 108.1 in 2024? I realize you don’t know that much about football but second place behind Lamar Jackson IS ELITE, to the NFL anyway, so… theres that.
    And then there’s these:
1-a career playoff passer rating of 105.9, highest in history, #1
2-one of the highest season passer ratings at 108.1
3-the highest completion percentage in 2024, 71.82%, #1 in the league
4-69 touchdowns in 2 years, the highest, #1 in the league
5-ran for more 1st downs than anyone in 2024, #1 in the league
Thats 4 number ones and all you can do is complain about stuff that you aren’t even right about, simply amazing. You must be a world class complainer. 😠 😡 😤

  44. Vinny from Vermont Says:

    LANshark and Kenton Smith…

    Thanks for your analysis.

  45. Mobucs Says:

I have long liked the Brees comparison. I believe the Chargers parted ways with him while he was coming off an injury and they had a hot new QB, about the same age, they preferred, Philip Rivers. Of course, the parallel of Rivers and Watson doesn’t hold up, but I think the Chargers and Browns were thinking the same way.
As for the INTs, the “leading the League” cliche sounds abominable; at least ten quarterbacks had 12 or more, and a difference of three or four is not drastically significant. I’m not recommending interceptions, but throwing 25 more TDs than INTs provides a perspective.

  46. Kenton Smith Says:

I’ll defend Baker, and now any Buc, if they’re being smeared. Of course anyone knows you have to work hard to limit turnovers. I’m positive Mayfield and Bowles and Grizzard are working on that. But this beating a dead horse is tiring and what’s worse is spinning false narratives. Baker is a good guy and teammate and nobody deserves being constantly lied about. Don’t guess I’ll ever get it. It’s a team game and folks here are only too happy to blame the teams woes on Baker. Baker, leading this team, is about to go on a 5 or 6 year run that true football fans are really going to enjoy. Some of these “fans” don’t deserve it.

  47. Davyboy Says:

    Patrick Mahomes–comp % (67.5), TD-(26), Interc-(11), passer rate-(93.5)
    Baker Mayfield (71 .8) (41) (16) (108.1)
Not even close by who some say is the greatest quarterback of all time.
    🤣 😂 🤣 😂 🤣

  48. Davyboy Says:

Kenton you are exactly right. There is a difference in giving your opinion vs. CONSTANTLY being SMEARED. And when you smear OUR quarterback you will be called out for it, that you can bet on. Just like any TRUE fan should.

  49. Davyboy Says:

The great Bruce Ariens said, if he ever came back to coaching he would want to coach the Cleveland Browns because that is where Baker Mayfield is. The NFL coaches know but posters know more. He won a superbowl didn’t he. So I am sure he knows who can get him there.

  50. Jarrett Says:

    Joe

When are you gonna lay off hyping up Baker Mayfield

We literally lost to the commanders in the first game of the playoffs

Mike Evans getting 1000 yards was our Super Bowl

When you gonna write up an article about back to back playoff loses cause of bakers turnovers

  51. Jarrett Says:

There’s really Bucs fans thinking Baker is better than Pat Mahomes lmao

I gotta blame Joe for always hyping Baker up

    Cmon Joe

We know who baker is … career journeyman … we picked him up … dusted him off… gave him some talent around him … hall of fame receiver etc

The team is good and has talent ITS NOT BAKER

We were contending for Super Bowls with the same core players!!!

  52. Davyboy Says:

  53. Davyboy Says:

In the history of the NFL playoffs, what quarterback has played the best? If you guessed Baker Mayfield you would be right. His career passer rating is 105.9. While 20 of the current quarterbacks average is 92.5. It is amazing Tampa Bay has the greatest playoff quarterback of all time!!! Let’s go Bucs 2025.

  54. Davyboy Says:

As usual, you haters get it totally wrong. The defense in 2024 was nothing like it was in 2020, what a joke. In 2020 points allowed we ranked 6th and total yards were 8th. In 2024 points allowed we were 16th. Against the pass we were 3 teams from the worst at 29th. In 2024 total yards were 18th. You should try a little harder to get it right. Is it from ignorance or on purpose? Utterly shameful

  55. Davyboy Says:

    2020 points per game-7th
    2024 points per game-17th
Yeah…that’s far far from the same team jarrett

  56. Davyboy Says:

You think that could be the reason we lost more games and not the quaterback that had a passer rating ranking 2nd in the league at 108.1??

  57. Davyboy Says:

    Rushing TD 2020 1st
    Rushing TD 2024 10th

    Passing TD 2020 17th
    Passing TD 2024 25th

Are we really talking about the same team here jarrett??

  58. Mj Says:

You can’t fumble a jet sweep in the fourth qrt of a playoff game

    Brady would never

  59. UKBuccaneer Says:

Name a QB who hasn’t thrown a dumb int. or had a handoff go awry in a key ‘must win’ game.

    Just one.

  60. Oneilbuc Says:

Davy. Baker Mayfield plays good against trash defenses and also he lead the league in picks and turnovers. And he was ranked second in passing with most short passes in the NFL. If the bucs don’t get to the NFC Championship Bowles got to go and they must draft a quarterback in the first round and let Baker Mayfield be the quarterback that he would be a bridge quarterback. You can’t waste all this talent on offense with a quarterback like Alex Smith. KC was winning 13 games a year just about and losing in the first or second round in the playoffs. And I’m sure they had Chiefs fans mad about drafting a quarterback in the first round. They were blaming Andy Reid but look how it turned out. That’s the results I want with the bucs and I don’t care who the quarterback is. Baker Mayfield hasn’t proven he can do it that’s why I sayI wouldn’t mind him being the quarterback of we can at least get to the NFC Championship this year .

  61. Buc40 Says:

He absolutely has to cut down on the bone headed picks in order to progress further than where he is now. If that doesn’t change, his ceiling is limited to a 9-10 win QB w early playoff exits. Seeing as though he has not done anything to cut those down since he entered the league, I don’t see how that magically improves.

I’d still take him over 2/3 of the starters out there, don’t get me wrong. But currently his ceiling is in that top 10-15 QBs in the league

  62. Davyboy Says:

Brady never had a rookie running 1.5 yards too deep in a play that is designed to happen very quick, no time to change anything, did he?? All McMillan had to do was be 1 yard off the quaterbacks heel but he was o 2 yards deep and in a “jet” sweep that is a mile. It’s why McMillan got the ball in his side not his stomach. Give it just a little thought.

  63. Davyboy Says:

You do realize onei that in 2023 Mahomes had 14, right?

  64. Davyboy Says:

Hate to tell you they will never get rid of the qb that has the highest playoff passer rating of all time. Sorry

  65. Fan of the South Says:

Almost all of the QB’s with the highest percentage lead the league is targets to RB’s.

Get high grades for getting Ace’s on all the quizzes during the regular season.
Unfortunately on the Final Exam when the defenses take the RB’s and Yards after Catch away he struggles on the Essay Portion.

Feast on a 21% of his completions for 19% of total yards (894 to RB’s) during the season and then when facing better teams in the Playoffs has 21% of his completions go for 10% of his yards (4 for 16 yards).

Sure 4500 yards looks great but don’t go naming him Summa Cum Laude.

  66. Davyboy Says:

I agree 100% he should cut down on interceptions but I’m not so sure they hurt us that bad. Regardless he should try to cut back. It’s never good to lead in interceptions

  67. Davyboy Says:

In the last 4 seasons Baker has had 47, Mahomes has had 50, so there’s that. That’s not bad is it?. Being that close to the greatest qb currently playing??

  68. Mobucs Says:

Someone mentioned Brady’s not fumbling in the fourth quarter of a playoff game. Well, technically not. But in the fourth quarter of a playoff game against the Raiders, Brady dropped the ball and it was recovered by the Raiders, who were
leading in the game. The officials, however, invoked the now-infamous Tuck Rule to “rule” that it was not a fumble, and the Patriots kept the ball and won the game, leading to TB’s first Super Bowl.

  69. Davyboy Says:

No no Mobucs, only Baker makes mistakes in big moments!!!

  70. Davyboy Says:

Onei, you are amazing, really you are. Only you and 2 others here can take a qb that averages 8 plays all year to scoring and try to turn it into a bad offense by saying oh Baker can only throw short passes. Really? We probably score in less plays than any other team and you aren’t happy with it. I would think if you could score that fast that would open up all kind of creative options on offense. At a minimum you can score quick when needed. But all you can do is try and drag down the 3rd best offense in the league and that’s with second stringers. You people are the most ignorant fans of all time. In fact I don’t think you few are fans at all. How could you be with posts like you put up attacking players with lies and half-truths. Anything to take away from the good. Drag it down. If you were just evaluating Baker that’s one thing but what you few do is smear a good teammate. Not going to go unanswered. 8 plays to scoring all year, now that is one high octain offense. Especially with the best receivers out. Cannot wait for this year’s offense with what we have now. I would venture to say we will be #1. Do you think that you sour pussess will be happy then?? I truly doubt it.

  71. Davyboy Says:

Onei, I am sincere in asking this question. You say Baker hasn’t proven he can win a superbowl. In my honest way of figuring on the problem is this, 20 currently playing quarterbacks which some have won superbowls have an average of 92.5 passer rating. Bakers is 105.9. Now I sit and 🤔 think that the passer rating is how the NFL suits figure how good a quarterback plays his position of quarterback. And then I 🤔 some more about if Baker has a passer rating of 105.9 and all the other great quarterbacks have a 92.5 how can Bake not be good enough, not have the skills, not have the talent to do what the other 92.5 quarterbacks have done. Maybe I’m 🤪, maybe this website has made me 🤪. I really think if someone performs at a level of 105.9 vs. 92.5 that 105 guy can do the job better than the 92 guy that won a superbowl. Please help me, I gotta know where I’m goin wrong!!! 92 vs 105 help me see the light buddy!!!

  72. Davyboy Says:

On the question of, is Baker Mayfield actually good enough to win a superbowl or are we wasting our time with this guy? To try and figure this out once and for all time, I took the 5 best and the 5 worst playoff passer rating quarterbacks since 2000 that have actually won a superbowl and deduced their average passer rating.
5 best 101.04. These 5 won 9 superbowls between them
5 worst 76.3. These 5 won 8 superbowls between them
Then I went a little further.
    The 2 best average 104.1. These 2 won 4
    The 2 worst average 64.4. These 2 won 2
And the final stat: Lamar Jackson who has had the highest passer rating in the regular season for 2 years now has a playoff rating of 84.6. Maybe that’s why he has never won a superbowl?
Remember Bakers is 105.9. Patrick Mahomes is 105.8
What did we learn? Well I learned that according to the NFL, Baker Mayfield has a fairly good chance of winning a superbowl. I can’t speak for those 3 or 4 individuals that think Baker isn’t good enough to start in the NFL but if I had to choose who to believe Bruce Arians or one of those naysayers…well… I would have to side with Bruce.
