“Trying To Keep My Job”

May 12th, 2025

Bucs running back Rachaad White loves the spotlight, but he is a team-first guy, an interesting mix of look-at-me and humble.

Bucky Irving raved about White embracing him last season during a recent visit to Up & Adams.

On his YouTube Channel last week, White posted a video about his typical offseason day. In one scene, he heads to a deserted field with his personal trainer in what looks like Tampa.

After “speed work,” White can be seen sprinting, he talks to the camera and exposes his everything-must-be-earned mentality.

“Now I’m going to do some field work, you know what I’m saying, trying to keep my job,” White said before joking that he might get a part-time gig at Dick’s Sporting Goods.

White mentioned protecting the ball and then said, “You gotta protect that chicken. That’s what Marshawn [Lynch] said.”

Now Lynch’s famous chicken quote was presumed to be referring to money, aka chicken. So maybe that was a tipoff that White knows he’s in his contract year and his prepping to ball out like never before.

All Joe can say is, as Joe wrote on these pages, the rumor of White being on the trade block was ludicrous. Why exactly would the Bucs trade an inexpensive and versatile running back coming off a 9-touchdown season? It’s not like White was going to fetch anything significant.

No way we should trade White anymore than Godwin for example. He is insurance against Bucky going. down and besides that he is good

  2. ReeeBarrr Says:

Is he a Pure running back? Does it matter?

He is productive, trustworthy, reliable. Unless something better comes along, you happily keep him

  3. zzbucs Says:

I see no reason for trading White, does make no sense.

He and Irving are great together, and if they add minutes to Sean Tucker, I will not complaint.

I love the running back situation.

  4. Aqualung Says:

Maroons drool amongst us. The armchair GM jeeniuses who play Madden Franchise mode.

  5. Erik with Pilot and Driver™ Says:

He’s our 3rd-best RB behind Buck & Tuck.

And his touches this season should reflect that.

  6. 30yrBuc Says:

Anybody that wants to ship out Rachad clearly doesn’t know anything about pass pro. He is our best and it’s not really close. Bucky and Tucker are far and away the better runners but not nearly as willing or effective blockers.

  7. David Says:

Times change quickly with good management. They now have a deep RB room, WR room, O-Line room, Edge (OLB) room, DT room, CB room

ILB and TE are thin. Could argue Safety but the DBs are versatile.

    White is a great backup

  8. BillyBucco Says:

Love it when someone spells geniuses jeeniuses when talking about morons spelled maroons.
    That’s a color. LMAO

  9. Jeffrey Becker Says:

although if tucker is the best RB in the NFL we’ll never find out. i know he has protection issues, so for now, gotta keep white. but…

  10. heyjude Says:

Enjoyed the video! Too funny about the cleats and the sporting goods store with possible part-time work. Good for him working out everyday. Gotta keep Rachaad!

  11. Hodad Says:

The only starter I would consider trading is Dean. I’d only do that if Morrison is ready to take over. Dean is not worth the money they’re paying him as a backup. You’d have to be nuts to trade White. Like Joe says he comes cheap, and he’s pretty good. Now, giving him a second contract is a whole other story.

  12. Defense Rules Says:

Bucs’ offense is typically on the field for 1050 – 1150 offensive plays each season, yet we only run it roughly 450 times on average nowadays (roughly 25 times a game). Our RBs typically are on the field pass-blocking at least as often as they’re running the ball.

Rachaad will get plenty of work this season, just like he did last season (591 offensive snaps, that included toting the ball 144 times, plus being targeted another 57 times). There was surely a LOT of pass-blocking in there.

  13. StormyInFL Says:

“The only starter I would consider trading is Dean. ”

Given what FA CBs are fetching nowadays, Dean is relatively cheap. I wouldn’t resign him, but I wouldn’t trade him for less than the likely comp pick they’d receive, either.

  14. Aqualung Says:

    Somebody said TE is thin?

    Another jeenius has self identified.

  15. toopanca Says:

Everything DR said plus, the few times White was on the field with Bucky, good things happened. Hopefully, those good things are a bigger part of the plan this year.

  16. Ha-Ha-Ha Says:

Rachaad gets a bum rap from this group of naysayers.
He came in when the o-line was crap. I believe this is the first time time in 4
years the team has the same starting 5 linemen.
If you look at the players starting at each position in the SB vs at the end of last year, there was only one player left still playing his SB position, Evans. Godwin was out, Wirfs changed sides. Everyone else was gone.
No down field speed threat, no HOF QB or TE. Nobody from the running back group, the line was rebuilt. Coaching turmoil, yet White is the problem.

  17. SlyPirate Says:

The one week Bucky started and Tucker was RB2, Tucker was named offensive player of the week.

I’m not a rocket scientist but seems like a better combo.

  18. Defense Rules Says:

toopanca … ‘the few times White was on the field with Bucky, good things happened.’

I LOVE 2-back sets to create a nice change of pace. Lots of options there for a QB like Baker.

  19. GoneGator Says:

Tucker had 1 good game against a defense that had given up. As much as I’d like to see him be great, he hasn’t shown much of anything outside of one game…. And he has had opportunities.

Rachaad is by far our best back in protection. Great receiver, runs hard, blocks his azz off.
Last year’s man crush (for some of y’all) mis-used White as the season went on.

Hopefully Grizz cooks up more creative uses for RW AND the rest of the RB krewe this year

  20. Stpetematt Says:

2-back sets with Tucker and Irving would be far more explosive.

    Just saying…

Tucker was a combine beast too so plenty strong enough to pass protect.

  21. Stpetematt Says:

Yup, I just checked. 28 reps(!!!) of 225 and 4.33 speed. An insane athlete Tucker is…

  22. Mike C Says:

Yeah Trade away RB depth….. that position NeVeR has any injuries……

  23. 1sparkybuc Says:

White is clearly the best blocker, in pass protection and as a run blocker. He catches the ball as well as anybody on the team. As I recall at one point he led the team with the highest catch percentage. He definitely has improved as a runner with this OL. He is dependable and productive, and deserves a second contract. I want to see more from Tucker. We have the best RB room that we’ve ever had. Rotate them. Keep everybody fresh and healthy. Don’t overload Bucky. Also want to see more of Culp, and get Tez involved too. This is going to be fun to watch. Mayfield has to be delirious with his options.

    Famu_Rattler Says:
Wrong @David. the only room that is thin is the ILB. TE is 4 deep with 88Otton, 41Keith, 87Durham and 82Culp. We have blocking , mauling, catching and speed. TE’s are ready to be called on. Go Bucs.

  25. unbelievable Says:

@SlyPirate – to be fair, we were playing the Stainks that week… but it was a great offensive performance. White is still the best at pass protection though.

We have a 3 headed monster at RB and I’d like to see all of them utilized at times. Also love the 2 back sets… more of those please, Mr. Grizzard the Wizard!

  26. Irishmist Says:

Bucky is your RB 1. White is your 3rd down back and comes in on 2 RB sets. Tucker is the guy you bring in in the 4th quarter with a lead, when everyone knows you’re going to run and is loading the box, because he has the power and the speed to take it all the way if he breaks through. Tucker should also be the one returning kicks for that reason. It’s a long season. We need all three.

  27. Rod Munch Says:

You go back and watch that game vs Denver, and I swear to you, White is blocking better than Sucke was. I’m not exaggerating – the DE over Sucke was running right around and over him time and time again, then when White was in there, he was getting on the DE and standing him straight up, something I didn’t see Sucke do the entire game.

Obviously Bucky has turned out to be a superstar RB, but he’s still a little fella and isn’t Warrick Dunn when it comes to blocking (Dunn was an impressive blocker, in particular for his size). Maybe Bucky gets there, but for now, White still has an important role on the team as a pass catching RB and as a great pass blocking RB.

BTW, another thing from watching tape last year, something I’m 100% confident in saying … White is a better pass blocker than Otton. And to be sure, I like Otton and think he’s an OK blocker, but White is just that good. Don’t be in such a rush to run White off the team.

  28. Badbucs Says:

Great analysis Rod. Bucky should be used like Detroit uses Gibbs. Our other two backs are both good with unique talents and deserve to be on the field. Burning out Bucky makes no sense with the other talent in the bullpen. Sure, feature Bucky. Just be smart about how much you need him out there and when.

I agree 30, White is way better at pass pro and having him in allows the QB to hold the ball for longer routes.

I wonder if opposing teams notice that with White in, it might be a longer pass attempt by the Bucs? Tells do tell.

Sweet, sweet, sweet to be jawing about three good running backs. How rare for Bucs fans!
