Derrick Carr Retires From Saints; Chaos In New Orleans

May 10th, 2025

After two seasons with the Buccaneers, Baker Mayfield is among the elite in the quarterback world.

After two seasons in New Orleans, quarterback Derek Carr has retired.

His ailing right shoulder took him down. Today the slimy Saints announced Carr is done.

Joe has zero ax to grind with good guy Carr. Joe does have an ax to grind with slimy Saints fans. So today, Joe is happy.

Now New Orleans will have a preseason QB battle between second-year man Spencer Rattler (0-6 as a starter last year) and rookie second-round pick Tyler Shough out of Louisville. No, Joe’s not counting ancient and injured Taysom Hill.

Former Bucs QB Shaun King, an astute evaluator of his position, has said Shough was the No. 2 QB in last month’s draft. He’s an interesting big and versatile prospect who will turn 26 in September. Joe is not gassing up Shough, only giving background.

Bottom line: the Saints are a hot mess and look like a team happy to tank the 2025 season.

Not only does New Orleans have salary cap issues and a new head coach, they just drafted for the trenches and look primed to average 17 points a game on offense.

Saints desperately trying to get Arch Manning next year hope it doesn’t happen

  2. Alstott40 Says:

Here comes Shough with the 3 td, 300 yard game against us, we love making rookie QB’s looks good.

  3. Tampabaybucfan Says:

    Team to watch is Carolina…

  4. Irishmist Says:

Buying a used Carr is always a risk.

  5. Navfree17 Says:

Nomercy: You nailed it. They are tanking for Manning. Way, too many connections with Nawlins

  6. Jimothy Says:

Which means the Bucs will struggle against them in both games because they seem to be jinxed against rookies and back up level QBs.

  7. David Kilmer Says:

Actually I feel bad for Carr good guy good about. Maybe he comes back later.
Anyway with that said did not see N O as a threat. I think Atl could give us a tough time if their draft picks pan out along with the free agency pick up from the Niners. If their QB picks up where he left off, their running game and improved defense,. They May be tough.
I would not take them lightly at this point.
    Just saying

  8. TomMoore4President2028 Says:

    Dang @Alstott40… You’re not wrong

  9. Weebs10 Says:

Excited to see New Orleans lose a ton of games this year. Hopefully this is the start of a long basement run for them!

  10. Jeffrey Becker Says:

TBbucsfan — totally what i’m thinking

  11. David Says:

They’ll look at Shough and Rattler for half the season, then they will be in the tank for Arch Manning. That is my call

  12. catcard202 Says:

Arch Manning to the Saints! Book it now.

  13. Milton Says:

“Not only does New Orleans have salary cap issues and a new head coach, they just drafted for the trenches and look primed to average 17 points a game on offense.”

All depends on if their O’line and WR’s are healthy. Last season after the first 2 games when they were scoring 40 burgers, week 3 injuries and on piled up. Rattler was playing behind a makeshift O’line and JV squad WR’s As far as their draft they had no choice but to draft in the trenches. They have the oldest defense in the NFL and had to get younger.

  14. Erik with Pilot and Driver™ Says:

Hopefully our new and improved D can finally help us beat rookie and backup QB’s consistently…

  15. ManzielMadness Says:

Arch hasn’t played much, who knows if he comes out next year?

  16. Aqualung Says:

I always liked Derek Carr. Feel bad for him.

But it’s great to see the Aints dissolving in a bucket of cow urine.

  17. Tye Says:

Was not expecting success from the Saints this year anyways …
The Panthers should be improved but 1st half season struggles…
The Falcons run game is what I expect to make them more relevant this year and challenge the Bucs…. Hopefully they don’t sweep the Bucs second year in a row…..

  18. HC Grover Says:

Age aint nuthin but a number….unless you are an NFL QB.

  19. MelvinJunior Says:

And, Clowney was released by his hometown Carolina Panthers. Clowney on the CHEAP and Ramsey!? Hmmmm… That Ramsey contract is not that bad at all, & Miami is expected to eat some more of it (they already have some)… It’s only like a 3yr/$49.5M left on it with like maybe just $24M guaranteed, I think I saw on ESPN a couple of days ago, when they reported that the RAMS are in talks. Hell, Carlton Friggin’ DAVIS just snagged about a 3yr/$51M for himself, just this past off-season free agency with Detroit. The DB Market EXPLODED this off-season… Making that Winfield Junior contract look really good for us, IF he can just stay on the field.

  20. Saskbucs Says:

Signing Carr to that contract was a mistake the day it happened. Seen this disaster coming a mile away. Was very happy our front office steered clear of that and took Mayfield.

  21. MelvinJunior Says:

Landing both Clowney and Ramsey together, would definitely be a real bold “Super Bowl” type of move. It would be a HUGE Statement. While, possibly, only having to give up maybe a 5th or 6th round pick for Ramsey (they originally said a 7th, idk what it’d take now, or what LAR is offering)… Might be able to get Clowney for just a couple MIL, if Carolina is still paying him part of his contract, as well!? You KNOW 💯 without a single doubt that HE would love NOTHING MORE than to land within the same Division, & have the chance to take it out on them. And, just STOMP ‘EM. TWICE. He is NOT happy about being released. Especially, with how they handled-it. Totally, DISRESPECTING the hometown kid.

  22. MelvinJunior Says:

Same here, “Saskbucs.” On that Carr Deal. Knew-It, IMMEDIATELY. Dumb. Horrible Deal.

  23. Jeffs grandpa Says:

Arch ain’t leaving Texas till 2027 at the earliest

  24. Aceofaerospace Says:

Arch ain’t leaving until he’s a lock for the first pick. Don’t know if next year will be enough. We’ll see, I guess.

  25. gp Says:

    @Jeffs grandpa & Aceofaerospace
    Patience young padawan!

  26. MelvinJunior Says:

You could kinda try hedging your “Reddick bet” that way, with Clowney… IF, you really can get him on the Cheap like that!? You’d be getting a very talented ANGRY player, who is highly motivated and with a big-ole ‘chip’ on his shoulder, who’s ONLY ‘negative’ as a pro has been at times, a lack of interest and motivation.

  27. Scotty in Fat Antonio Says:

Trying to figure out WHY THE LOVE (outside of pedigree….from his UNCLES) for Arch Manning. He hasn’t done SQUAT for Texas. We will see this year I guess.

  28. Pewter Power Says:

Here’s to hoping all the other teams in the nfc south have mediocre seasons not bust seasons, no top picks in the draft for any of ya

  29. Stanglassman Says:

I would feel too bad for Carr. He going to take his 100m + he made in the league and retire at a young 34. If he wants to work he can make another bag in as a TV talking head.

  30. Vanessa Anne Says:

    I feel bad for Derrick.

    He’s not a bad guy.

The team he plays for… that’s another story.

Even without this announcement I wasn’t too concerned about the Saints this year.

I’ve been saying since late last season that we need to watch out for Carolina this year.

I’ll add the Falcons to that.

We’re still the best in the NFCS by far, but we certainly can’t rest on our laurels this year.

  31. Sapp 2 Fundamentally Sound Says:

    IMO
Arch Manning will not be in the 2026 draft.

Arch Manning will have a long successful career in the NFL. Somewhat similar to Eli Manning’s career, Arch will win 1-2 SBs & make 4-6 pro bowls over a 15 year span. He is a much faster runner than Peyton or Eli and will be successfully entertaining in the early stages of his career. Of course most QBs improve their play with time in the league but I believe Arch will make one of the more dramatic jumps statistically with his passing later in his journey. Be it age, injury or wisdom that slows his legs the man’s arm & mind will prove to be championship caliber for some lucky team.
Hope it’s not our division rival saints but it does make a lot of sense for them. Just don’t think it will start with the 26 draft.

  32. Gipper Says:

Baker Mayfield had the same injury in his left shoulder which occurred in the second game of the 2021 season. It is an enormously painful injury which Baker tried to play with through the entire 2021 season. The Browns rewarded him for his effort by signing Deshaun Watson for $235Mill guaranteed over 5 years. Baker recovered from his injury but spent a year in the wilderness until he landed in Tampa in 2023. The Browns have never recovered from the worst deal in the history of professional sports which saw them giving Houston three #1 draft picks. Baker is going to get the last laugh when he leads Tampa to a SB sometime in the next couple of years. Tampa will reward him with a $50mil/yr multiple year contract.

  33. Rod Munch Says:

If you haven’t done so recently, you should go google Derek Carr’s huge 4th and goal passing play to end the game vs the Titans, it sums up his entire career.

Carr, last play of game, at the goal line vs the Titans, gets the ball in his hands – looks, looks, throws the ball out of bounds to end the game. He didn’t want to risk forcing the ball and getting an INT on the stat sheet, no, instead he just throws it out of bounds to end the game. He’s the anti-Winston, no heart, zero desire to win, all he cared about was his stat sheet. All you peckerwoods that hate Winston are the same dummies that were all pining to sign this bum a couple of years ago. Meanwhile I was one of the few people who actually said the Bucs should, 100 out of 100 times, sign Baker over Carr.

  34. Pmike Says:

Not sure how Carr contract affects the saints cap, but maybe they pay for Rodgers on a one year deal?

  35. BA’s Red Pen Says:

    F the saints.

  36. Scotty Mack Says:

According to several sources, Carr’s retirement gives the Saints an extra $30 million in cap space this year.

  37. Fred McNeil Says:

Carr is giving up $30 million in guaranteed money to retire. I bet the Browns wish Deshawn Watson would do that. Even on IR he could have gotten paid.

    ——–

No, he’s getting a $10M check to retire because he doesn’t want to show-up for work to get that other $30M. The team could force him to repay the $10M, instead he pockets it for doing nothing.

  39. Kenton Smith Says:

BA’s Red Pen, whenever you say F someone or something I always agree. More than a few of them out there that fits.

All hype with nothing to back it up.

  41. Oneilbuc Says:

Gipper. Let’s just hope he can at least lead us the NFC Championship game first because he’s never played in that game. Even when he had a good defense with 2 good runningbacks and the best o line in the NFL with 3 of them were all pro limen. And now in Tampa he has everything he needs to lead us to the NFC Championship. And I don’t want here about the defense as if he’s playing with the same type of defense Jamies was stuck with. Because if he did I would give him that excuse. And not to mention he don’t have to throw the ball 45 to 50 times a game with most of the passes were thrown 10 or more yards . At some point he’s going to have to prove he gat us over the hump and this year is the year he has to get to the NFC Championship him and Bowles. It’s NFC Championship or bust no more excuses it’s a mazing how you claim to have so much faith in Baker Mayfield and you really don’t believe he can lead us to NFC Championship. I’m going to say it again NFC Championship or bust no excuses. And I can care less about him going to a pro bowl because that’s a popularity decision.

Hey your eminence, here are a few facts for you: 1) Baker Mayfield has the highest QB playoff rating all time that means in the HISTORY of the NFL). Not even Tom Brady who you routinely fantasize about when laying in bed every evening has a higher QB Rating than Baker. 2) Football is the ultimate team game of which the QB is 1/22 of the total starting team. You would understand that had you ever played the game but like many who comment here your “team” was the band.

  45. View from 132 Says:

Gipper, what the playoff QB rating of Troy Aikman, or Montana, or Bradshaw, or heck, Eli? The answer is who cares – that list is 14-0 in Super Bowls. QB Rating? Really? Win or get lost. It’s simple. That’s what he’s paid to do.
He’s not 1 of 22, he’s not some 3rd DB in zone coverage. He’s the QB. Win. That’s the job.

  46. BucaneroJim Says:

Could be interesting if Aaron Rogers pulls a Brady and joins the Saints. Reported Carr retiring freed up 30 mil towards their cap.

    ++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++
I’ll go slowly for you: If a QB does what he is supposed to do reflected by an outstanding game QB rating in a playoff game and his team loses because his team’s defense can’t stop the other team or the special team’s unit allows 3 punt returns for TD’s, it is pretty hard to hang that on any QB. Again, that is a grown up, real world conversation that many of the children who post here are incapable of understanding. Here is why: You were the last kid picked to play in pickup games. You remember those days don’t you? You need to have a fundamental understanding of team sports. You just don’t.

eeewwww….will cam jordan play out the season in new orleans or what…?

  49. heyjude Says:

Good for Derek and his wife making the best decision. Health and family are much more important. We could end up seeing him as a sport analyst next. Wishing he and his family the best. The Saints have Shuck and Rattler. It will be interesting to see what happens next.

  51. Smarter than Joe Says:

The low football IQ comments about Arch Manning are hilarious

Kid has started what 3 games and could’nt beat out Ewers for the job now he’s a franchise savior? HA HA HA HA HA HA

    Hilarious

  52. Zman Says:

    Tanking for Arch.

  53. MelvinJunior Says:

“Smarter than Joe” – Then YOU didn’t watch HIM play a game last season… And, YOU are ‘smarter’ than literally, EVERY Coach AND Scout out there, who ever lived then, because EVERY single one of them has been DROOLING over this kid ever since he was in the 8th GRADE. And, NOT a single GM would pass on HIM either, unless it’s someone already with a ‘young’ STUD QB and then they’d be forced to trade out of it due to how valuable to pick will be. Arch played very well last season when called upon to do so, & he looked 1000-TIMES more talented than Ewers ever did… And, it wasn’t even close. Also, HE can run like a deer. On that 70-yard TD-run in his first game… He was clocked FASTER than Tyreek Hill (a man they call “Cheetah”), at something like 23MPH. Now, THAT is insane. He’s going to be a force to be reckoned with. He was literally BORN to do this. Barring any unforeseen circumstances (a miserable season (&/or) injury, both highly unlikely), HE will be THE #1-OVERALL PICK in next season’s NFL Draft. Unless, it’s Cleveland or something, he is NOT passing on the 2026 Draft. Period. HE GONE.

  54. lambchop Says:

Arch Manning probably won’t leave early for the draft. I think the Mannings have always used college football to its fullest to prep for the NFL. Oh, and Arch has 7M reasons not to leave early which his uncles didn’t have when they were playing college ball.

  55. Esteban85 Says:

I’m looking for some nice and big flakey kosher salt to rub into this open wound, anybody seen Cameron Jordan?

  56. garro Says:

Lets just make sure the new guy gets a proper baptism Not like many of the other new guy QBs lately. I find it very difficult to not blame that on our HC.

Used to be that any rookie or second string QB was pretty much guaranteed a very bad day against the Bucs.

    Go Bucs!

  57. Marky mark Says:

What does Winston have to do with this? Looks like another weak Global South Division again. There are lots of stat stuffers our there and Baker is not one them. If anything coach has to force Baker to sit due to an injury. Should be a fun season.

  58. Marky mark Says:

Nil will keep the mid level players in College. High first rounders are better off coming out because they can get to unrestricted free agency faster and they get paid for IR

  59. SlyPirate Says:

At Oregon, Shough was the heir aparent to Herbert. Same phyical gifts. He was basically booted off the team because he wasn’t smart enough to play football.

We hear about high IQ players. He’s the opposite.
