Todd Bowles Addresses Fan Outrage

April 25th, 2025

Bucs coach Todd Bowles responds.

Man, Joe must be slipping, Joe always prided himself as having a pulse of Bucs fans.

But man, despite the Bucs all but buying ad time on local radio announcing they were targeting a receiver in Round 1 of last night’s NFL Draft, many Bucs fans seem fully shocked by the pick of Ohio State receiver Emeka Egbuka at No. 19 last night.

At The Licht House, video shows fans booing Egbuka when the pick was announced. Holy Flirkingschmidt!

Bucs AC/DC-loving general manager Jason Licht and head coach Todd Bowles each said at the owners meetings last month they were not ruling out a receiver. Bowles even said he wouldn’t pass on a top-shelf receiver because the team needed to score (more) points.

Then, three guys who have direct pipelines into the high reaches of the Bucs front office all said/typed this week that Tampa Bay would likely go receiver at No. 19.

And still folks are triggered by this selection of Egbuka. Why? How? Maybe it was only casual fans booing.

Bowles was asked to address the fans blasting the team for drafting Egbuka. He replied in very simple terms.

“He was the best player” on the board, Bowles said.

Licht declared that had the Bucs traded back, Egbuka would have been quickly snatched up by another team before the Bucs were on the clock.

Bowles also reminded Bucs fans bent that they didn’t draft a defensive player at No. 19 that the draft is not over and the Bucs still have (at least) two picks tonight and several picks tomorrow.

Joe understands some of the outrage. Like most fans, Joe is not sold that SirVocea Dennis can or will stay healthy enough to start 10+ games at inside linebacker. And yes, Joe is fed up with Jamel Dean missing so many games. But Dean is tight with Bowles and Bowles doesn’t seem in a rush to bench or cut Dean (yet).

It’s pretty clear the Bucs were spooked by Alabama inside linebacker Jihaad Campbell’s injuries and they didn’t want to reach for an inside linebacker.

If someone wants to complain about safety, Joe is with you. But a strong receiver is more valuable than a safety.

Is Joe surprised the Bucs picked a receiver? No.

They’ll get over it once they see the results….btw, we’re not done šŸ™‚

  2. Sam Brutus Says:

Same outrage when we drafted Mike Evans and Maybe Godwin look at them now.
    Next

  3. Anyhony Says:

Fans will bit8h about anything and everything cause they can!

  4. Todd Says:

    Next!

  5. Buchead Says:

Yeah but you are forgetting anything they may have said about drafting any position usually is a smoke screen. So if they slightly hint at not passing up on a WR then I was like cool they are going defense. We need edge it’s to a knock on the WR skills look great but seems
A bit of luxury based on what I saw from edge and the secondary last year of
Course I will be the first to love him when he make his first touchdown.

  6. FilthyAnimal Says:

    people are dumb

  7. Scott Says:

They probably didn’t expect him to be there. It took a little before the pick was in I’m sure they were really thinking about it. Probably stuck with the highest on their board.

  8. Biff Barker Says:

You really cant pass up a pick like this even in the first round!

  9. Teacherman Says:

Those OLB and DTs taken look GOOD.

But Pearce looks skinny. Goedeke will crush his spirit.

I bet we might have taken one of those OLBs or Nolan or the Grant the Michigan DT.

    I’m happy with this.

This is a zero risk pick.

    Wars are important man!

Look at the Jets. Pathetic WRs. Zero offense.

    Evans, Godwin, Egbuka, McMillan?

That’s a very nice 4 WR set if you ask me.

  10. Teacherman Says:

It’s all disgusting that any fan or human would a kid as his dreams come true!

Every fan who booed hurt his karma.

  11. TheScourge Says:

Todd was told to ā€œsit down and shut up, the grown folks are drafting for 2027ā€. He doesn’t need players, he can dial up some more bend and eventually break defensive schemes to elevate that 30th ranked defense.

  12. Eric Says:

When the guy makes some key catches in big games all will be well.

  13. Chief Says:

I wasn’t outraged, but I admit I was shocked at the picked. EE is a really good WR, and you can never go wrong taking a WR coached by Brian Hartline.
BUT……as the 4th WR how much impact will he have unless we have injuries again? 30 catches 400 yards and 3 TD’s maybe? That doesn’t win us any more games in the present. After Mike retires yes this will be a great pick.

But the defense is what kept us from making a Super Bowl run last year. Our QB is top 5 despite the idiotic takes of Rod Munch. Our offense was top 3. Points were not a problem, stopping people was the problem.

Now they may very well have made the best pick and the defenders available may turn out to be disappointments. Jason Licht has earned our trust with his proven results. But admittedly, I was shocked they didn’t take a defender.

Let’s see what they do tonight!!

  14. Thisisouryear!! Says:

I could go either way here. Defense needs several pieces but we have been down receivers often the last several years. Having a 1a 1b and 1c receiver not to mention a 2 in McMillan is pretty sweet. Plus we can stock the defense tonight tomorrow and maybe still a bit with free agency.

  15. MadMax Says:

Oh i remember, trust me, GOT MY RECEIPTS TOO!! ….Big V wont be able to handle the heat, Wirfs wasnt worth the trade up, #5 is too high for a LB (White who helped us win the SB but then lost his marbles) Brady wont come here (heh) Baker is a failure its stupid to go after him (heh, heh)….then sign him to 99.99999999 mill (remember? yeah I called it)

ALL OF THAT, I PUSHED FOR…..as little ole unpaid me. Where we at now spoiled brats? So many angles I could hit this with….but dont want to get into it with my fellow Bucs fans. Why are we here and posting? We love our team. But seriously, just have some respect for those in charge…..we got this

  16. Usedtocould Says:

If you listen to the fans you will end up sitting with them

  17. PeskyOne Says:

The kid can do it all.

He’s even a great run blocker.

When Bucky busts out some 50+ yard runs off an EE block no one will be booing then.

When EE catches TD passes from Baker in big games no one will boo.

And when we win our third title with EE on the field, there will be no booing.

    LFG!!!

  18. infomeplease Says:

As long as the D is way stronger and deeper (than last season) by opening day, I”m good with the pick from last night. It’s hard to go wrong picking the BAP! JT and his staff have done incredible drafts the past 5 or so seasons. No reason to believe this draft will be any different.

All fans should consider EE as an insurance policy in case of a major injury to any of our top three WRs.

  19. Wvbuc Says:

Wait for it tonight. They’re gonna trade up in the 2nd and draft Mason Taylor.

  20. Bantry Says:

Seems some of the complaining fans forget that the Bucs ‘D’ shutout the Saints and Chargers (who had the top scoring offense at the time) in the second half. Also shoutout the Giants (yeah, I know, but they get paid too) for almost the entire game. Throw in the Commanders that were averaging over 30 points per game being held to 20 during the playoff game and the ‘D’ wasn’t that bad considering all their injuries.

Now we start with 5 more picks for the next six rounds in a draft that is deep with talent that can help immediately. Bottomline is that I trust Licht more than any talking head or fan that ‘knows’ what the Bucs should do.

  21. It's Corn Says:

The Bucs biggest weakness for the next season (and the past one) has been injuries. And the most vulnerable position to injuries because of the player health and the impact, is receiver.

You could draft an edge rusher, and if Licht is right about Braswell, and Reddick is hot, and Yaya succeeds, that draft pick would be riding the bench most of the season.

The odds that Godwin and Evans are both healthy for the whole season is quite low. And that all but killed the Bucs’ season when they had to play without them.

  22. Tampabaybucfan Says:

Surprise yes, outrage is unreasonable…because he’s a quality pick. Relax

  23. Joe Says:

he Bucs biggest weakness for the next season (and the past one) has been injuries.

    Ain’t that the truth.

  24. BPBucsfan Says:

He may be a great receiver, but fan outrage is certainly justified. When statue Kirk Cousins can stand unchallenged in the back field and throw for 500 yards and others have time to eat a sandwich 🄪 before they throw, the fans have every right to be upset about not getting another edge rusher (of course we know Braswell is going to shock the world) or a good defensive tackle, that’s what we needed. That’s the only way you rattle Mahomes is constant pressure coming mainly from your front 4. We did it, and Philly just did it.

  25. Fred McNeil Says:

I don’t exactly hate the pick. I just don’t know this guy from Adam. I’ve only heard his name recently and never thought much of him. My thing is do you choose a #3 or #4 receiver in the first round? I’m not gonna grab my pitchfork just yet, but I am keeping it handy.

  26. Fred McNeil Says:

All I can say is this kid better pan out. This particular fish will create a much more noticable stench than usual under the circumstances of things go south. Fair or unfair.

  27. Train Whistle Says:

Trade our #1 next year and # 7 this year to Cleveland for their 2s and 3s

  28. BucsFanSince1996 Says:

    —————————————————————————————-

We WILL have injuries this season in the WR room, just like any other year. We played a couple games last year without our top 3 WRs.

And injuries to WR’s did contribute to not making a Super Bowl run last season.
If Chris Godwin was healthy for that game against Washington I believe that that game would have turned out differently.

  29. FlumundaCheese Says:

Bowles knows we need to score more points – 45 per game to win with his garbage defense.

  30. SenileSenior Says:

Ridiculous. We got the best player available at a position we can use. Licht indicated before the draft that there would be the few exceptional talents then things would level off from the second round on. No big surprise.

  31. MadMax Says:

@Fred, you just said you dont know him…ok…now properly shove your pitchfork into the part of your brain thats not there yet and get it to working please. Then get back to us šŸ™‚

  32. geno711 Says:

Lot’s of ways to win in the NFL. Maybe one of them is to have the best receiving core in the NFL and them all being paid less than market value for their production.

  33. Jeffrey Becker Says:

whatever. so what, they said they might do it beforehand. they did it, that’s the problem. who was gonna take him, the packers because they took golden? not buying it. they booed because we need defense more than we need wideouts. and a third or fourth WR is not more important than a starting safety.

  34. JimBobBuc Says:

Not outraged here. I’m not sure he will get enough snaps to justify a pick at 19. I could see a high pick receiver next year when Evans nears the end of his career. I think Harmon or Barron could get more snaps than a WR.

I like Double E though, a tough guy with great hands who will play well.

  35. Jeffrey Becker Says:

i don’t hate the pick, to be clear, but people are not wrong to boo. last year’s defense was beyond embarrassing and bowles needs to take full responsibility. adding another WR at 19 is probably not doing that. maybe bowles thinks the offense can rack up extended drives can keep his D off the field the entire game

  36. MelvinJunior Says:

I don’t get all of the ā€œOUTRAGEā€ speak… Cause, I haven’t really seen-it!? Very little of it. What I have seen is A LOT of ā€˜homerism’ and the rest has been mostly, just confusion, unfulfillment, and a little disappointed. I wouldn’t go as far as absolute OUTRAGE. Not over this one particular mild move here. But, allowing Cohen to leave and choosing Bowles over him… Now, THAT WAS ā€œOUTRAGED.ā€ People went NUTS. Both sides. On the radio and everything. Especially, T-Kress LoL. The only thing that bothered ME by this move was NOT being BOLD, by ā€˜trading-up’ for Jalon Walker. Now, THAT would’ve been a STATEMENT ā€˜move’ there, by saying that we mean ā€˜business’ right now (and the future LoL). That would’ve been a Super Bowl move. The ā€˜move’ he made was safe, boring, and a reach at #19. It was SUCH a weak draft at WR, that HE would’ve been a ā€˜4th-Round’ Pick in last years draft, & that’s a FACT (even Urban Meyer said it, and HE absolutely LOVES the kid). That was one reason he came back and returned to OSU for his Senior Season… And, of course, NIL helped allow him to do that (as per Urban, who I am not a fan of btw). I was just wondering how JMac took it and was handling it right now… He couldn’t be ā€˜thrilled’ to death over it.

  37. Warrenfb12 Says:

I’m pumped they went WR. Keep the pedal down on offense

  38. gotbbucs Says:

    785 yards and 8 TD’s

Those are Kirk Cousins two game stats against Bowles defense last season.
Scoring 42 points a game won’t matter when the other team can score 45.

  39. geno711 Says:

Some guys always pick out small sample sizes to make their points.

  40. JeffreyLane77 Says:

There is wisdom in this pick at 19. But not for good reasons. Even if Tampa took that Cornerback who was rated the BPA at the time of thier 19th pick. In Bowles scheme he would’ve been 7yds off the line. In a soft zone. This scheme is requires elite pass rush to shut down passing lanes and force QB’s into having to make decisions stuck between a rock and a hard place. You don’t need top tier cornerback talent. You need smart corners who can ball hawk. You can draft that cornerback in the 2nd round who’s a little too short to be considered rd1 talent. And in this scheme a player like that should be successful. In fact as a longterm strategy this scheme has huge upsides. You can afford too keep your best pass rushers and go cheap on corners. The pass rush doesn’t even have to come from the Dline. You can blitz from anywhere and everywhere. This defense is predicated on elite disruptive pass rush and speed. So picking an elite Cornerback at 19 is contrary to how this defense is not only supposed to function. But contrary to the longterm sustainable goal of having cheap corners who fit the system. The HUGE problem staring us in the face is Tampa doesn’t have a pass rush. Even if they blitz. So drafting the best corner available at 19 is like putting $6000 rims on a $500 car that won’t even start. It’s unnecessary and expensive. I’m betting thru address the corner back position and possibly linebacker in this draft. As far as Dline goes? I suspect the consensus from management about Dline. Is take a wait and see approach. They have a few young guys that flashed at times last year. Why spend draft capital on a position group you expect to make positive strides. Anyway rant over. Lol

  41. MelvinJunior Says:

ā€œSam Brutusā€ – Nope. Not even close. Not even close to the same thing. Godwin was a ā€˜3RD-ROUND’ PICK. And, I was at the Bucs Draft Party that night when he was picked, & EVERYONE in the entire place immediately, started chanting ā€œWE GOT GODWIN… Da Da DaDa Da! WE GOT GODWIN… Da Da DaDa Da!ā€ Literally, over and over for at least a full minute. EVERYONE was stoked over that pick. And, I remember ALL of the pundits (especially Skip Bayless – said it was THE STEAL of the draft) LOVED that pick, as did everyone else I knew, anyway!!!! And, it was an ENTIRELY ā€˜different’ situation back then, too. Not apples to apples.

  42. MelvinJunior Says:

I was referring to the ā€œMike Evans Pickā€ when it got to the part about all of the ā€˜pundits’ and Skip Bayless…. Immediately, right after I said that everyone was ā€œstokedā€ about the Godwin Pick.

  43. Bucs Guy Says:

Nobody has complained about EE as not being first round talent.
Nobody has complained about the Bucs reaching for a player not worthy of the #19 pick.
Nobody has said the Bucs shouldn’t plan for the future,
People are upset because the Bucs have multiple weaknesses on D and the means to fix yhem were there at #19 but they made a luxury pick instead of addressing an area of need.

Top 5 offense, bottom 5 defense.

  44. Famu_Rattler Says:

Bucs GM, HC, OC made a mistake in Rd#1…..
    Walterfootball.com states……
I like Egbuka, and he could end up being a good player for the Buccaneers.
However, unless there are injuries at receiver, he likely won’t contribute much
this year. For a team that, like the Falcons, has a good chance to win a bad
division and make a run in the playoffs, the Buccaneers squandered an
opportunity to strengthen their team and give themselves the best chance
possible to win the Super Bowl this year. I was 50-50 on the Buccaneers
versus Falcons as far as the winner of the NFC South was concerned, but in
the wake of what transpired in the 2025 NFL Draft, I now have to give a
decent edge to Atlanta. end quote…….

Famu_Ratter says… we should have gone with bad shoulder Jihaad Campbell or cornerback Jahdae Barron. Hope has some small college wonder in store to make up for the 1st rd OF selection. Go Defense …. Go Bucs.

  45. MelvinJunior Says:

ā€œBantryā€ – NOPE. That Chargers Offense was HORRIBLE, by the time we played them. Herbert was ALL busted up by then, AND they had NO WR’s OR RB’s left, who were capable of making ANY plays. They were totally COOKED by the time we got them. They couldn’t do ANYTHING. They were DONE. I don’t know what you saw, or are trying to remember. We had THE ā€˜weakest’ schedule in the entire LEAGUE, during the whole ā€˜second-half’ of that schedule. I mean, come-on now!? Look at the QB’s we faced… DeVito/Lock, Rattler, Cooper Rush, BYoung TWICE, O’Connel/Ridder, & an AWFUL Chargers Team with no weapons and ZERO Offense (and a flailing San Fran team). It was ALL, nothing but a bunch of ā€œSmoke & Mirrorsā€ and we STILL needed a complete collapse from ATL, just to ā€˜sneak-in’ as the LAST Playoff Team. Hence, the reason for picking at #19 in the first place, directly behind the very last team that MISSED-OUT on getting into the Playoffs.

  46. Dubcity Says:

After some time to digest it, I still don’t get the draft pick.. not one bit.. its by far the deepest position on the team. The CB that Denver drafted right after looks really solid.. I just don’t get it at all… the depth and injuries talk makes no sense.. none of it.. im not buying what they’re selling right now on that move

  47. MelvinJunior Says:

That’s a good point there, ā€œBPBucsfan.ā€ That is šŸ’Æ true.

  48. Mobucs Says:

I don’t watch much college football outside of the Bowl games, so like some fans here, I found Egbuka a name totally strange to me until I watched the championship games, when I thought, “Who is this guy?” and knew I had to remember the name, as his performance jumped off the screen. Just so clearly superior to his opponents, standing out on his own very balanced offensive team. Again like many others, I was surprised when the Bucs picked him, but found the choice “outrageous” only in the most positive sense of the word. Whatever “it” is, EE has got it!

  49. Saskbucs Says:

@Bantry… Saints Chargers Commanders Eagles offense are all ground based attacks. They wanna pound the ball. That plays directly into the strength of our D and is the primary reason our D shut them down.

Let’s not throw too many flowers at last years D for a handful of good games. Injuries were a big issue. So far, if the same injuries occur, we are the 29th ranked pass D again.

  50. Hearty Dikerson Says:

All the Licht fanboys crack me up. Disagree with anything he does, they get so offended and start name calling. Believe it or not, Licht is not an infallible demigod and can make mistakes.

Sure, WRs will always be valuable, but the one we picked? He’s not overly fast, not overly big, he was always the #2 on his team, and his production was good, not great. Likely a high-floor, medium-ceiling player. Was he really worth bypassing desperately needed help on D?

  51. gotbbucs Says:

What happens when the “best player on the board” in round 2 or 3 is a WR?
The rule is you pick where BPA meets roster needs.
One thing this scouting department is great at is finding mid-round WR’s like Godwin and McMillan. Round 1 is reserved for freak of nature WR’s that are bonified #1 wide recievers. Was Egbuka ever the #1 guy at Ohio State? A true freshman was the #1 at Ohio State this season.

  52. shaftmaster Says:

If you take a WR in the first round that people think would’ve been available in the second, and then you take a defensive player in the second round that was expected to be taken in the first, then what difference does it make if you got the guys you wanted?

I’m not going to complain about any of our picks until they’ve had a chance to play. There are too many examples of first round picks that were sure things that didn’t work out and mid round picks that had HoF careers.

  53. Winny Testaverde Says:

Campbell wasn’t a reach…rich get richer @ Philly. They had him Top 10…and I’d say their defense is already championship caliber. A 4th receiver is a reach at 19…unless you’re trying to stay on Licht’s ā€œgood sideā€.

  54. Nillyboy133 Says:

So if there best on board is a wide receiver this round they take him or quarterback shutup with stupid answers! Media needs to fire back

  55. geno711 Says:

I am always curious when someone on this site says the pick was bad.

i always feel like they should put in their comments the 1 or 2 players (sorry not 5 or 10) player they are certain would become a better pro.

For instance – Winny did it. He is certain that Campbell was the guy.

  56. LakelandSteve Says:

I liked the pick, however, I can sympathize with those who are upset. It’s simple, the Bucs defense mainly against the pass was atrocious. How many years did we sweat when the Dungy Bucs had a fabulous defense but a not so good offense. Now it is in reverse, we have a dynamic offense and a defense who couldn’t stop a drive against the school for the blind.

  57. Winny Testaverde Says:

I’m convinced geno711 is the best sales clerk/janitor at not only 7/11, but Quick Stop, Loaf & Jug and Circle K. The lil’ duffer is a beast…don’t let the lower case fool ya!

  58. Becky Says:

Not outraged, just find it a questionable pick. I don’t understand a first round draft pick being wasted on the future. We were so close last season, and the reason we didn’t go all the way was defense, because we had nobody who could get a hand on opposing quarterbacks and tackling was pathetic. So how does this pick improve that problem? It doesn’t and if we don’t improve that problem we will have another season like the last. Drafting in the first round for the future is foolish when how much of a future do we still have with Baker at his age? We should be drafting to win now not down the road. We also should not expect players who did not play to to their potential to be any different. Last night’s pick would now have helped us win last season so why would he help us win in the next. Nothing personal against the kid but wasn’t he a second stringer in college? The best players in the draft are in the first round for a reason. I don’t see settling for less than the best as a smart move for this team.

  59. D-Rok Says:

We just got a very good football player with his head and heart in the right place. This will only lead to good things in the future.

*IF* EE was our 1 and only pick allowed in this draft, yeah I’d be outraged due to the needs on D.

It’s a good thing we have several picks available.

The more I ponder this draft pick, the more happy I am. Now let’s upgrade our D!

  60. Rod Munch Says:

    Anyone outraged is an idiot.

Getting a really really good player, probably the safest player in the draft, is never a bad thing. If you disagree, you’re a dope.

  61. Steve A Says:

Is a strong receiver that might not see the field better than a potential starting safety?!

  62. Winny Testaverde Says:

Hot Rod saves his outrage for comments about his Personal Hall of Fame…Winston, McCoy and Matt Gay-Blade. And you don’t want to upset Hot Rod The Hairdresser! āœ‚ļø

  63. Becky Says:

Rod Munch look in the mirror if you want to see an idiot. If drafting good kids with good heads on their shoulders is the point then we did great but it’s not the draft is for choosing players that help you win, and I want to win now, not in the future. Bringing in better defensive players are the key to helping us win next year not the pick we made. This pick in the second round would have been fine. But nolt addressing what hurt us last year first, makes me question how dedicated we are to winning now.

  64. BucEmUp Says:

I think everyone likes the kids and it’s not that he’s viewed as not good enough to warrant the pick where it was made. The outrage is how pathetic the pass defense is and it heavily out weighs the need for a 1st round wr. If Godwin is hurt and can’t play we shouldn’t have paid him 66 mil. If the pass defense were even middle of the pack nobody wouldn’t complain about it.

  65. Becky Says:

Rod Munch Sorry bully but you are pretty loose with the name calling so I thought I would give you a little taste of your own medicine. Think before you speak. I am not an idiot or a dope but I do have my own opinion as does everybody else on this comment line. Show some respect.

  66. BrdWinrBob Says:

Imagine we take sanders thinking for 2027 ya know

  67. Becky Says:

    BrdWinrBob- HELL NO!

  68. Mike Johnson Says:

I’m not mad at the pick itself. I just believe we had a prime opportunity to snag a DE who Dallas picked up. He is going to be good. Meanwhile we gotta pray Reddicks performance last year was a mirage. Just remember buc fans, if we are not getting enough pressure next season, we had the guy from Boston College but let him walk to the cowgirls.

  69. Aqualung Says:

Head coach has decided his defensive coordinator sucks and after the scoring more points move, try to hide behind DB talent deficit instead of horrible scheme, playcalling, preparation and coaching.

How’s our troll jarrett feeling after guys like Gabriel go before Shadeur?

  70. Jarrett Says:

    JOE

THIS ONE OF THE WORST DAYS IN FRANCHISE HISTORY

WE REALLY PASSED ON SANDERS 3 TIMES !!!!

JASON LIGHT WHAT ARE YOU DOING!!!

I HAVE NEVER BEEN MORE DISGUSTED IN JASON LIGHT

  71. Aqualung Says:

Jarrett – after your next Thorazine treatment, it may occur to you (or not) —every other team, most with real QB needs, have done the same. Are you his special needs cousin or something? (Let us know if you only understand capital letter writing).

  72. Becky Says:

If the only reason you come on here is to criticize someone else’s opinion so that you can feel superior then you are an ahole and we all know who you are.

  73. NLK@boston Says:

EE is overrated – i don’t care what anyone else says – i watched him play – no speed – no strength – he looked good because of the 18 yr old #1 rcv. – braswell and reddick better be great or this draft is a bust. – that 1st pick had me humming the theme from the twilight zone
