It’s A Receiver!

April 24th, 2025

Welcome to Tampa Bay!

UPDATED: Joe has been banging the drum for this guy for months. And here he comes!

The Bucs drafted Emeka Egbuka, the Chris Godwin clone from Ohio State.

Joe is freaking stoked. Yeah, Joe would have preferred a defensive player. But this Egbuka is a pro. Watch his highlights and try to tell Joe he is not Chris Godwin II.

He is as clean as they come. Productive. Dependable. Zero issues, just like Godwin. Can run, stretch the field, and play slot.

If Godwin cannot go, the Bucs have his perfect replacement.

As general manager Jason Licht said this month. “You know how it is in the league now, explosive offenses … we’ve had a lot of success with that.”

    Let’s go!

  2. Chris Says:

We are so bad on defense I just don’t understand

  3. D-Mac Says:

What a stupid pick with all the needs we had on defense. I sure hope I’m wrong.

  4. Reezy Says:

Whiskey Tango Foxtrot Bucs, we need a cornerback.

  5. JustOneGame Says:

Well Bucky Brooks, I apologize. You were right! Welcome to Tampa Emeka!

  6. SteveK Says:

Good options for defense will be there later. Happy to have another weapon.

    Horrible pick

    Godwin/evans/ mcmillen-

    Needed defense

  8. Rod Munch Says:

You win by scoring more points than your opponents.

  9. Chris Says:

We need a couple corners and a LB I just do not get this pick

  10. richnucsfan Says:

Well, Evans ain’t getting any younger and we don’t know about Godwin. So, it’s understandable. Defense will be the rest of the draft

  11. Walter Says:

Evans-Godwin-McMillan-Egbuka???? Sheesh, no excuses, somebody should be open on damn near every play.

  12. SRQ Bucs Fan Says:

Joe had it announced before abc!

  13. gotbbucs Says:

In my wildest dreams, I did not think Licht would make this horrible of a pick.

  14. #99 the big fella Says:

    Right on ! Rod Much

  15. BucsFanNC Says:

    Will Johnson sighhhhhhh

  16. ModHairKen Says:

    Best Player Available

  17. Brian Says:

Of course, we suck on defense so let’s draft a receiver. I am about over this!

  18. richnucsfan Says:

I’m disappointed JL didn’t pick the LG from Division Champs III North Central

  19. El hefe Says:

    Don’t knock the pic

  20. SlyPirate Says:

Meh … Every EDGE we wanted was there.

Never going to doubt Licht on WR picks. He picks studs.

  21. Matt Says:

He better grow into a stud

Nothing against him but it’s weird taking a lower rated WR that would be your #3 vs taking a guy that would be your #1 corner

  22. buc4evr Says:

such a stupid pick. they could have gotten green. or even jihad would have been better. defense is not getting better.

  23. View from 132 Says:

    Should’ve gone QB.

  24. Watch Daddy Sling It Says:

Can’t’t argue with keeping our strength a strength.

  25. buc4evr Says:

    even golden was better

  26. Alanbucsfan Says:

Bucs offense is loaded! – The remaining picks can all be Defense and Special Teams

  27. BucFanDMV Says:

With all the issues that we have on defense I do not understand this pick

  28. Kieran Says:

Dumb pick when we need so much help on the Defense side of the ball, I get it but………DT LB DE would’ve been a much needed upgrad

  29. buc4evr Says:

    wow what a disappointment.

  30. Rod Munch Says:

Not the guy I would have picked, just doesn’t seem special enough to be a 1st rounder, but doesn’t mean he won’t be a very good WR. Would have liked this dramatically more if they had traded back and got a pick. Still, stacking a position, when every single year the Bucs have injuries issues at WR, I like the idea.

  31. NJbucs23 Says:

People calm down ! This kid is a stud! We will fill the defense holes in rounds 2-4. There is plenty of talent available.

    I’m all about this pick.

    Go Bucs !

  32. Scott Says:

Missed out on CB again probably

  33. Two thumbs up Says:

He was just tooooo good to pass up. Our offense will be legendary. Great pick!

  34. Nicholas Carlson Says:

    In Licht I trust

  35. Pewter Power Says:

    5 more picks

You win by scoring more points than your opponents.

Conversely, one could say that you win by not allowing the other team to score more points than you. Defense was the way to go there.

  38. BucsFan81 Says:

If we were going to draft this kid why re sign Godwin. Clearly they don’t trust he will be ready after the injury. Guess we’re going with the let’s score 40 plus points a game with no defense

  39. Tampabaybucfan Says:

More points….huge insurance…we go CB in round 2

  40. Chris Says:

    Hope he plays corner good

  41. Tbbucs3 Says:

Another year of Jamel Dean getting toasted

  42. B Says:

Guess there’s no run on corners so far so we think we can trade up? I mean why resign Godwin if you think he can’t go? 29th in defense, we didn’t loose because we can’t pass the ball.

  43. AlabamaBucsFan Says:

Bucs better be the top rated passing team this year!

  44. Steve Says:

Lot of good defense later in this draft.

Baker got choices now! And insurance if Godwin takes more time to recover and/or if McMillan’s work ethic lets us down. Get the defense later.

  45. DunkinDFDubya Says:

I guess the Bucs’ plan is to avg 28+ per game on offense and hope the defense holds

  46. Irishmist Says:

Maybe they figured that big giant bling chain would have weighed Golden down.

  47. Matt Says:

Why wouldn’t we trade back if we wanted a WR? Multiple WRs in this tier would have been available in the 30-45 range, likely even this guy

  48. Pat Says:

Horrendous. Our pass defense is awful. How does this help us in 2025?

  49. Bnasty25 Says:

This was a SOLID pick and remember the injuries at wr last year? Bet we go defense rest of the draft and maybe a o lineman we haven’t heard of that licht always finds

  50. Tbbucs3 Says:

He’ll be a great player….but this seems like a pick for the future. They mentioned Evans getting up there in age.

This needed to be a win now pick and thats not what the Bucs did.

  51. FilthyAnimal Says:

Those who say it’s a stupid pick are stupid.

Not every pick is all about the highest need. And how can you not think it’s a need anyway, when Evans is 32, always misses some time, Godwin’s full recovery isn’t guaranteed, and McMillan isn’t ready to be a 1a/1b receiver and probably won’t ever be due to such a slight build.

What we got in Egbuka is as guaranteed as anything left on the board. Production, smarts, skills, and leadership. This is such a prototype Jason Licht pick.

    He will be great.

  52. Destinjohnny Says:

Would be stoked to get him late 2nd
    Way overdrafted

  53. Ugotrobbed Says:

Really!! Godwin has to be off schedule. Has JL not paid attention to the D! Wow!

  54. Keep it reals Says:

Not a Ohio st fan but they turn out all pro receivers- and this guy is a true route runner.. u can’t miss on the 1st pick.. they nailed it..

Tomorrow they get 2 starters on D

  55. Ndog's Burner Account Says:

Could tell by the not-even-half smile on Todd Bowles’ face in the draft room that it was going to be a WR.

  56. Marine Buc Says:

You guys didn’t listen to our head coach?

“You need to score points to win games in the NFL”

    I absolutely love this pick…

    Welcome aboard!

  57. Gipper Says:

Don’t like it. Ebuka not going to touch the ball enough the next couple of years to make this pick worthwhile. A defender on the field for 90% of defensive plays makes more sense. Going to be sorry they passed on Emmanwori.

  58. Matt Says:

He didn’t have a 1st round grade in the majority of places. It was a clear reach plus it’s a position of strength.

  59. Rod Munch Says:

    D-Mac Says:
Conversely, one could say that you win by not allowing the other team to score more points than you. Defense was the way to go there.

    ———-

Yeah, I know you could say that, thus the reason i worded it that way.

I would have went defense after guys slid down the board, but then again, why spend a high pick on a corner if they’re just going to stand around flat footed in zone by design.

  60. Christina Olive Says:

LFG!! Gonna be hard to stop this smoke

  61. 76doug Says:

Hope he can cover the te with 30 seconds left so we don’t lose 47-45 in Todd’s the guru’s defense.

  62. Greg Says:

    Cool…we just snagged our 4th WR….wtf

  63. James west Says:

    Defense dummies

  64. Alstott40 Says:

I agree with a lot of other posts; if we’re so worried about Godwin why did we resign him? We used our 1st round pick in a superbowl-potential year on wide receiver depth, unless we plan on playing 4 wide all game.

  65. Let ‘em bake Says:

Bake lined up with pass catchers for years to come…..

  66. August1976Buc Says:

Defensive minded coach T Bowles said he realized you actually need to score points to win games.

Defensive minded T Dungy learned that after going to Indy

Yes the D needs help bigtime.

When teams score 30 a game, it makes defense a lot easier

The Bucs scored 30 a game and won the super bowl.

If the Bucs had scored 30 against Washington in the playoffs, they would have advanced.

Pedal to the medal on offense, and build the D

Also with McMillan and this guy, the Bucs should be able to replace Godwin and Evans over time. Wise choice

  67. Jonzey Says:

That was a terrible pick We didn’t a wide receiver, for our number one pick We needed a cornerback safety or a linebacker. Was not our problem it was our defense. The wide receiver we got we could’ve got him in the second round.

  68. Jon Says:

Evans isn’t really showing any signs of slowing down. We have a competent 3rd wr in McMillan. Where does this guy fit in? For the first two weeks Godwin may miss? Awful pick. Again, as far as I can tell light thinks we’ve fixed this defense by making one extremely questionable free agent signing. I have no problem taking a wr in a later round

  69. BucEmUp Says:

If Godwin can’t go and we used a top pick on this guy why are we paying Godwin? What about the defense!?!?

  70. Scott Says:

Licht got cute with this one.

  71. Bucs4Ever Says:

    Godwin or this guy….not both…mismanagement…again

  72. adam from ny Says:

    enigma egbuka……………………..nice !

  73. GoneGator Says:

Expected ILB, CB, or D-line and would have expected the kid from TX if they went this route but…..

I trust that JL and Todd (along with an army of scouts) have researched all the possible picks for 100s of hours and know what they are doing. Our pass game could be historic!

LOTS of good defensive pieces still on the board.

  74. adam from ny Says:

what happened to our all D draft……………heehaa !

  75. D-Rok Says:

So we add a good slot WR so we can now score 35 a game, BUT! The other team will score 37.

Let’s hope the rest of the draft is defense. Offense is loaded. Good pic, I just question the value given team needs.

  76. MadMax Says:

    Draft isnt over yet guys….

  77. Usedtocould Says:

Love it. Take high quality long term starters, duh.

  78. Just Saying Says:

Emeka Egbuka is an Ohio State LEGEND, setting the all time record for OSU in receptions and receiving yards That says a lot!

  79. Dom Says:

I like the pick. Good teams always draft ahead of their needs. They got the most pro ready WR in the draft on a friendly 5 year deal. Evans is 32 and Godwin is approaching 30 with two major injuries. Emeka Egbuka and JMac are good pieces for the future WR room post Godwin and Evans. They just need to find their eventual X WR now to replace Evans when he eventually retires

  80. Ed Says:

Don’t forget Licht has come up big with 3rd and 4th rounders, expect day 2 and 3 to feature secondary and linebackers.

  81. jarrett Says:

    TERRIBLE PICK…

WE HAD SANDERS RIGHT THERE AT 19…

WHY DOES THIS TEAM BELIEVE IN BAKER SO MUCH, HE SUCKS AND CHOKED IN BACK TO BACK PLAYOFFS.

  82. toopanca Says:

The Bucs still have Evans, Godwin, and now they just got Antonio Brown talent!

And, there are so many defenders still on the board, the Bucs have a host of options to fill their needs.

The Bucs need to connect the dots between a ball hawk CB, a ball hawk Safety and a coverage linebacker.

Moving up for Campbell is probably out of reach.

But, ball hawk Safety Xavier Watts may fall to the Bucs in the second.

Ball hawk CB Nohl Williams may fall to the Bucs in the third.

And, coverage ILB Jeffery Bassa may fall to the Bucs in the fourth.

That leaves rounds five and seven for trades or the best player available.

Not the pick I wanted, but not a pick I can complain about.

  83. Mord Says:

    Jeebus, guys. Take a breath.

There’s some consensus that there are a lot of edge rush, DT and defensive positions after the first ones (already) drafted that are more like “second round grade” type guys. Thus, there may be some depth to draw from to get comparable quality defensive players in the coming rounds.

It would seem that for Licht, Bowles and the gang, this guy was the BPA; the most elite player to spend a first round pick on. A value match. I think that’s a good way to approach the draft. Especially round 1.

  84. FilthyAnimal Says:

Only true idiots were surprised by this pick.

  85. JReel Buc Says:

2nd round division 3 oline is next im calling it lol

  86. BigBucsFan Says:

The deepest position and this year’s draft is DBS plenty of defense still to go around Evans Godwin with all the love that we have for them in the world aren’t getting any younger. And for the modern day NFL I heard a wise quote here recently scoring points wins games. We have a fully stocked tight end room one of the best wide receiving rooms in the NFL a stable of running backs and a franchise quarterback safe bet is we’re picking defense mainly here on out.

  87. JustVisiting Says:

With all the weapons at his disposal, watch Baker’s interceptions drop this season.

  88. gotbbucs Says:

I don’t hate the player, but I hate the pick.

  89. Rod Munch Says:

Wow are people stupid, in the NFL you NEED at minimum 3 starting WRs. I don’t know if any of you dummies have actually watched the Bucs play before, but if you did, you know they lose at least one WR every year to injury. Last year, in the 49ers game, the Bucs were literally down FIVE WRs based on the opening day roster. Additionally, while I love Mike, he’s not going to be able to play forever – and even if he’s a top player for another 2 years, the new kid they drafted is on a 5-year deal. Finally, you should not always expect guys to come in from day 1 and dominate, sometimes they need a year to get up to speed.

Reinforcing a strength, at a premium position, is never a bad idea when your strength is offense. If, for example, Mike started to slip this year, and Godwin is slow to recover, having a 3rd string corner standing around in zone isn’t going to save your season. A legit #1 or #2 WR might.

  90. Proudbucsfan Says:

Love this pic, in the next few years he will be our #1 WR and the offensive side the ball will not lose one step

  91. Buccaneer Bonzai Says:

    Emeka Egbuka????

    Godwin is gone.

  92. Brent Carver Says:

Remember last year when mike and Chris got hurt and we lost 5 in a row. And Baker was throwing to Ryan Miller and company. Iam good with quality receiver depth!

  93. 76doug Says:

Godwin was a 3rd rounder, just saying, better be defense the rest of the way. If not Todd will be gone but that might be a good thing.

  94. Hearty Dikerson Says:

So disappointed. We give Godwin $66M but then draft his clone becuase we’re scared he might not be ready?

We literally needed help at every level of the defense but we select a 4th WR with no discernible athletic traits. What a misallocation of resources.

  95. Rod Munch Says:

    Buccaneer Bonzai Says:

    Emeka Egbuka????

    Godwin is gone.

    ————

The two literally have nothing to do with each other.

  96. Defense Rules Says:

Just a reminder: We lost in the 2024 playoffs because of our defense let the Washington offense drive almost the length of the field in the last 4:41 for the winning FG. They kept the ball for ove 35 minutes, racked up 350 total yards, and went 3-for-5 on 4th down conversions.

  97. Kidfloflo Says:

I said all week I had a feeling they go W.R…Im cool with it as he appears to be a stud, Baker must be dancing tonight! Also it’s not our last pick of the draft, so everybody breathe…we’re going D rest of the way anyways and when kid scores a game winning T D next year…cheer

  98. Jeffs grandpa Says:

Everyone saying they don’t get this pick will have this kids jersey within the next 2 years short sighted folks

We give Godwin $66M but then draft his clone becuase we’re scared he might not be ready?

No, we drafted him because he’s a great player and WR is a need whether you believe it or not.

  100. Cybetsecurity_intern Says:

I am not saying is right or wrong, but ppl being all upset because is not a defender amaze me. We can just hope it works out. How do you know the defender would have been a good pick ( DW?) we have success drafting offense thats what we should be doing and go trade for Ramsey.

  101. MMJ Says:

Such a trash pick. I’m so glad we got WR depth when we have 1 aging LB and 1.5 corners

  102. ballwasher61 Says:

This guy is not a Godwin clone. has similar characteristics but not a clone and in many peoples opinion BETTER than the 2 guys drafted respectively before him. Watched him for 3 years he is the best receiver in the draft

  103. Lightningvinny Says:

Great pick , JL will get the right D guys in the next 3 rounds ,, I mean why not get the best wide receiver on the best team last year in college ,,,, at the very least we are gonna be fun to watch

  104. Hearty Dikerson Says:

    @FilthyAnimall

“No, we drafted him because he’s a great player and WR is a need whether you believe it or not.”

My point is, if WR was such a need, we shouldn’t have handed an injured Godwin $66M. That money could have gone a long way towards some great defenders, which we desperately need.

  105. FilthyAnimal Says:

    Jonzey Says:

That was a terrible pick We didn’t a wide receiver, for our number one pick We needed a cornerback safety or a linebacker.

I think the Bucs management knows better what they need and how to fill those needs. There are players in rounds 2, 3, and 4. Settle down.

The wide receiver we got we could’ve got him in the second round.

How many NFL GMs did you talk to about that?

  106. Alanbucsfan Says:

DR- Bucs lost to Commanders mainly because the offense did not score enough points and because Bucs turned it over in their own red zone which gave Commanders an easy TD.
There are several picks left to address the Defense and Bucs may pick up another free agent or another team’s released player.

Thanks for sharing your advanced NFL scouting knowledge and correcting the obvious mistakes of the professionals doing the job.

You can fill other needs in round 2, 3, and 4… but I’m sure you know this since you’re obviously an experienced NFL front office veteran.

  110. What it is Says:

Jarret, Baker only ran the 3rd hottest offense in the league with backup receivers. He’s terrible, you’re right.

  111. Simeon4HOF Says:

Thought he’d be gone. Love this pick.
We have the #1 Oline and #1 WR Core in the League.
    Plus Baker and Bucky.
I’d hate to be any other Defense in the NFL right now.
Rd 2 is for CB. ILB in Rd 3. S in Rd 4. DT in RD 5
    We will be fine.
Worst thing Bucs could have done is reach for a Corner or Edge5 in Rd 1.

You might get the pick if you’ve been paying attention for the last 3 months.

WR was a need. Maybe not our #1 need, but Licht picks the best player for his team, not the one that uninformed fans will be excited about on draft night.

We will draft defense in rounds 2, 3, and 4.

  114. Keith Lichtie Says:

Golden is a diva. Mark my words, Egbuka will be the better pro. My wife’s a Packer fan so I get to evaluate them both over their careers. Attach yourself to Chris and Mike!!!

  115. Bucblind Says:

Really!! Godwin has to be off schedule. Has JL not paid attention to the D! Wow!

OR… Godwin’s recovery is what it is – not 100% certain… AND we want to be able to throw 3 starting quality receivers at opponents at all times… Because you win by scoring points.

And defensive players are available in rounds 2, 3, and 4. Settle down.

  117. Rod Munch Says:

Double-E has a 38″ vertical? That’s really impressive. Ran a 4.45 at his pro-day, but I never trust those numbers as they always seem to be a bit fast, but his speed is plenty good.

Watching his highlights again, and it’s hard to see a 1st round pick – for me, I want to see a guy do something special. But, that’s not a dis, I said the other day when his name was brought up, he looks like a guy who will be very productive in the NFL. The Bucs comparison for me would be Mark Carrier, who was exceptional for the Bucs for the time and had a long career – if the Bucs get that, he’s a home run of a pick.

  118. FilthyAnimal Says:

Egbuka is just as much about reinforcing the team’s winning culture as it is production.

  119. Scotty Mack Says:

Why, oh why, do so many people think that there were a plethora of teams willing to trade up for the Bucs #19 pick? Other than JAX going from #5 to #2, the next trade-up didn’t happen until pick #25.

NOBODY that the “experts” had the Bucs taking has been taken at all in the first round – at least through pick #30.

Joe, on the other hand, at least had Egbuka as his top pick at WR if he was still available and if the Bucs were going to go that route. Kudos to Joe for that.

One other thing to keep in mind, folks. The Bucs have a history of drafting very good WRs and picking up their option years when contract extensions get tight. If Egbuka is everything people think he will be, you’ve got a fifth year option on the guy.

  120. Sapp 2 Fundamentally Sound Says:

    Great Pick!! BPA!!
I bet Jihaad is still available after our next pick.
    Go BUCS!!

  121. Scotty Mack Says:

An alternative opinion is that the Bucs defense is not nearly as bad as everybody thinks it is, provided they don’t have the horrible rash of injuries that plagues the D unit last year.

Nobody knows how good or bad the Bucs defense was last year because they lost so many starters early on. They also added some decent depth in free agency this offseason.

The Bucs offense is set up for many years to come now. There’s not a position group on the team (other than backup QB) that the Bucs aren’t pretty well stacked at for the future.

There really wasn’t anybody on defense left that truly had a first round grade. Smart pick by Licht. Get those defensive players later, in the rounds they really grade out at.

  122. Erik with Pilot and Driver™ Says:

    Great pick!

Godwin will prob start the year on IR.

  123. BPBucsfan Says:

Swiss cheese defense and we draft a WR? 🤦

  124. PeskyOne Says:

If you want quality, you pay for it.

Licht is tremendous at drafting WRs.

    I’m absolutely pumped.

Thank you Captain Obvious. Not gonna go Devil’s advocate here it has already been argued. I really was hoping they were going defense with 1st pick. Just waiting to see how the rest of the draft plays out and hoping that we get some great picks to help our defense in the upcoming rounds.

  126. Capt.Tim Says:

    Gotta keep Baker happy!

  127. Skunky Haze Says:

I think this was a great pick! Yeah there were defensive players on the board I loved but this draft is so deep at defensive that to me made sense to grab one of the most well polished dynamic offensive players in the draft! Evans on his last year and Godwin can’t stay healthy. Now we go get our defensive players rest of draft! Probably trade down a bit in either rounds 2-4 to pick up an extra pick and grab o-line depth. Be patient Bucs fans plenty of draft left and plenty of defensive players who quite frankly aren’t that far off grade wise to who we passed on! This is gonna be a great draft I can feel it! Go Bucs!!!

Great pick, was the BPA and will learn from ME on how to be a pro.

Solid pick that makes sense when you put the whiskey down and breath deeply!

Like many, I expected defense. Still, it’s hard to argue because the kid’s talented.

    Go Bucs!

    Elite talent.

Just from watching how teams were all over the place, tells me there were very few blue chip players.

I think getting this type of talent with an again WR room was smart.

Now go get some defensive tools.
