BSPN: Bucs May Have To Reach

April 15th, 2023

Desired.

So when Joe was looking at a BSPN story about who the Bucs will draft if they are only picking for need, a smile cracked Joe’s face.

But apparently, the stenographer that typed the article, Matt Miller, frowned. Let Joe explain: Miller believes the Bucs need a left tackle. They do. However, Miller picked the Bucs to draft Oklahoma tackle Anton Harrison bu said he’s a reach — one the Bucs must make or risk someone else grabbing him.

OK, now I’m starting to reach. Harrison is my No. 62 overall player in the class, but there’s no denying the need for an offensive tackle in Tampa Bay after it released Donovan Smith. Harrison is a talented tackle with good movement skills but must improve his play strength. The value isn’t here with this pick, and it highlights the significant drop-off at the position after the top four are off the board.

Joe gets what Miller is saying, but dang, why would the Bucs draft Harris at No. 19 if he’s he 62nd best player in the draft? That seems excessive.

Instead, it might be smarter for Bucs AC/DC-loving general manager Jason Licht to trade down in the first round, pick up an extra pick or two and still grab Harrison.

All these pundits have everyone everywhere. The draft is a complete crap shoot. The rule of thumb is get YOUR guy, no matter what. If it works, youre a genius, if it doesn’t, you got too cute. Just like how it is for onsides kicks or going for it on 4th and short. We have many needs and I foresee Licht fulfilling them.

  2. Goatfarmer Says:

No wonder these maroons are getting let go like it’s 1929. No way Licht does that.

  3. MadMax Says:

Wirfs goes to LT (he wants it)

Trade down from 19 to near end of first or top of 2nd like last year…
    Trade diva for a 2nd

    Trenton Simpson
    Darnell Wright
    Darnell Washington
    Devon Achane
    Mekhi Garner
    Jayden Reed

Some trades will have to occur in this scenario and this is all we’ll probably have, but man what a haul if this plays out!

(thanks for showing your true colors DIVA…now GTF Outta here!!!

  4. Bucsqb12 Says:

I believe Licht has never gone into a draft having to draft a starter at a spot and reach for the most part. Few weeks ago we had no starting safety and Branch had to be the pick at 19. Licht signs a starter in Neal. Now it’s a LT. I can almost guarantee you that Licht will have signed a veteran LT that can start before the draft. Might even be our ole boy Donovan! Licht has done a pretty good job shoring up the starting lineup ahead of the draft so he can have some freedom in how he wants to proceed. Go Bucs!

  5. Goatfarmer Says:

Diva is like an enema gone horribly wrong.

  6. garro Says:

Yup we are in agreement Joe.
Jason has worked his tail off to keep from having to reach for any player.
We just signed a guy that if all else fails we can plug in at left tackle…. so no to reaches at LT!

  7. westernbuc Says:

Thats a Mayock/Gruden pick not a Licht pick

  8. sasquatch Says:

I don’t think they’ll reach when they have such a need for edge rusher. They’ll take the better player of their top couple needs. At 19, there could be a player who unexpectedly slides whose value is too hard to pass up. Is that Bijan Robinson? Could it be one of the QBs? Or do they covet one of the TEs? I really think this year’s top pick could be more of a surprise than we usually see from Licht.

  9. Destinjohnny Says:

Jason always trades up for a guy that wasn’t going to get drafted for 3 more rounds

  10. Bucs since 76 Says:

The Bucs have a history of not drafting good DE so the should pick a OT in the first round.

  11. Defense Rules Says:

Sasquatch … ‘They’ll take the better player of their top couple needs. At 19, there could be a player who unexpectedly slides whose value is too hard to pass up.’

Exactly! Bucs are actually in a decent position picking at #19, primarily because we have multiple priority needs: offensive tackle, pass rusher, defensive back, defensive tackle. Heck if the right QB, RB, WR was available at #19, then Jason would probably grab him and every JBFer would cheer ‘Wow did we luck out’.

A big goal in this draft should be to get 1 or 2 more picks in the Top-4 rounds. We need several draft picks who can contribute THIS YEAR, and our best chance of drafting them is in Rounds 1-4.

  12. Jp09 Says:

Also according to espn, dudes should get recognized for wearing a costume and competing in women’s sports. I wouldn’t take what anyone there says to seriously

  13. Fansince76 Says:

Draft Foskey at 19 or a bit further back in first round then take Harrison at 50.

  14. DungyDance Says:

Leopold – “The draft is a complete crap shoot.”

DR – “A big goal in this draft should be to get 1 or 2 more picks in the Top-4 rounds.”

Exactly. The fact that it’s a crap shoot is all the more reason to have more shots at it, in addition to our plethora of needs this year.

And if you acknowledge that it’s a crap shoot, then what’s the wisdom in all this “collapse for whoever” talk? Doing that is only certain to accomplish two things – waste a season and destroy credibility.

  15. TampaBayBucsFanSince1976 Says:

Darnell Washington in 2nd round is as good as a extra Olineman , this kid is man beast and will add strength and nasty to our run game and we need that desperately

  16. MadMax Says:

^ Ive been promoting him like crazy….hopefully D Washington is still there in the 2nd…

Watch the TE combine day….he owned that sled that EVERY other TE face planted into lol

Dude is a 6’6 lineman with 4.6 speed that can GO UP for the ball!!! Watch his combine and that last one handed catch!

He’s gonna be a star somewhere and I hope its with us. But we need OT and LB since DIVA is going AB on us (I hate that manchild now, AND I PROMOTED HIM HERE)

  17. MadMax Says:

No room for “reaching”…. trade down out of 19 for an extra something, trade diva for an extra…something (maybe the new t r a n s bud dudette as a cheerleader LOL)

too many holes to fill, depth too. And the more I learn about LB Simpson, the more I think we need him first. Plays OLB and ILB, is fast, can cover and can rush the QB!

We got this Mr. Licht 🙂 ….just get rid of diva

  18. Tampabaybucfan Says:

No, No, No, No, No…….don’t reach……trade down or pick the best at a position of need and we have many…….LB, TE, RB, S……..a great player will still be there at 19.

  19. TampaBayBucsFanSince1976 Says:

Devin will play and play well simply because he has to as this is a contract year. Really strange timing on that announcement from White , had he announced 7 weeks earlier at the beginning of free agency he may have gotten his wish when there was plenty of liquidity in the market.

  20. MadMax Says:

^ he’s such a manchild throwing a temper tantrum that Im afraid he’ll sit out….

  21. MadMax Says:

I pushed for White, Winfield, Marpet, Vea, Wirfs…and yes Hall (i know, just give him time)

Diva by far is my biggest disappointment…i thought he had more going on up there than he does

  22. Richard Says:

Good teams and organizations with longevity in winning take the best player available regardless of the position!!! When you pass over a far better player to draft a need you’re not doing the best for your team. Take the best available, please 🙏

(How do you do html quotes in here?)
That was my thinking as well. Draft is thin for linebackers anyway, White REALLY has no options other than play VERY well. Dude walks, we get a comp pick too

  24. Leopold Stotch Says:

Dungy Dance- I’m all for getting more picks, absolutely! I don’t think I’ve mentioned here about Collapsing for Caleb or tanking at all anywhere, just sounds nasty thinking about it. Anyway to your point though, the dirty word that the Joe’s don’t like is “Hope” and hope brings promises and sales to a franchise that is in the position to draft one of those guys. I agree with you, all it does though waste a season, which is a slap to the face of fans and players alike.

  25. MadMax Says:

I watched some more vids on Simpson….just take him at 19 and be happy you did…even if DIVA is forced to play this year….I know LB a little lol. I played it on D and played TE on O

  26. Brandon Jeff Says:

I hate to say this his as we have so many needs but I’m pulling for Bijan. He would be considered a luxury pick but he may be the only potentially generational talent in this draft. This would give us a 1-2 punch at RB that could solve our run game issues and provide needed relief to a new QB.
I have faith in Light to continue to work some magic in free agency to give us the freedom to pick BPA in the draft.

  27. Letsbucinggo Says:

Bucqb12 Licht gets every line up before the season yeah right the offensive line was a trainwreck from preseason to the end of the regular season. Why would you bring back an underachiever like Smith just because hes cheap?

  28. Posey99 Says:

These are young kids. Know which one will be a bust is almost impossible. I think you are really splitting hairs with projections on some of these players. Hitting on someone being good is way more important than talent level out of college being one level better.

  29. garro Says:

If Licht’s man is not there …And I’m conviced he has a couple in mind already… he trades back for more picks and gets a guy he wants anyway.

  30. Infomeplease Says:

The Bucs need better analysis/scouting. That trade down from round one, last draft, didn’t work so well as far as I can tell. The year before that, JTS isn’t looking like a storm trooper either. This draft especially, the Bucs need their first couple picks to be game changers or at minimum, strong starters!

  31. Infomeplease Says:

Of course this hasn’t always been an issue… Wirfs and Winfield are proof of that. But again, this is a “what have you done lately” league!!

  32. Goatfarmer Says:

In the what have you done lately league, exhibit A dragging Licht down is Toad the Bloweszo, who lately and even longer just loses. We won’t know this season whether any of the rookies and young guys drafted the last two years are any good or not because of the debilitating cloud of poor head coaching hanging over them all. Looking forward to Jason’s second head coach recruitment process for the 2024 season.

  33. Joe in Michigan Says:

I’m not gonna worry about it, Licht and his scouts know more than I do. A good draft, and IF some of the younger guys start playing like NFL players (JTS, Hall, Goedeke, McCollum, etc.) the Bucs will be decent.

  34. Tony Says:

Should’ve taken Josh Allen over Devin. I would’ve leaned that way from the beginning. Could use both Josh Allen’s.

  35. DoooshLaRue Says:

Am I the o LT one seeing two knee braces in that pic?

  36. 80forBrady Says:

Don’t reach. Trade back for more picks. There us safety in numbers of draft picks.

  37. Larrd Says:

Why reach for a left tackle when you’ve got he best left tackle in the league on the roster?

Draft a tackle later. Goedeke might work out on the right side, anyway.

  38. Mike S Says:

    PASS RUSH???

  39. gotbbucs Says:

The guy that prides himself with drafting offensive linemen in the 2nd-4th rounds is not going to reach for a turd in the 1st round.
