Todd Bowles Didn’t Call Kyle Trask After Baker Mayfield Signed

April 2nd, 2023

Bucs QB Kyle Trask

There are many ways to manage employees successfully — regardless of the business.

The NFL is a business, of course, and third-year quarterback Kyle Trask was told months ago to expect this to be his year — his first year — to compete for the Bucs’ starting QB job.

Then the Bucs signed young veteran quarterback Baker Mayfield in mid-March. He’s got a ton more experience than Trask and head coach Todd Bowles clearly is a big fan. He even labeled Mayfield “a natural born leader.”

One might think Bowles would have picked up the phone to call Trask after the Mayfield signing, just for the sake of communicating to the 2021 second-round pick where he stands and to keep up his spirits. But Bowles said last week at the NFC Coaches Breakfast that he has not talked to Trask since Mayfield joined the Bucs and followed his signing with hours of media interviews.

Joe was surprised.

For Joe, it felt like the natural move for the head coach to call his QB after signing another one with a big name. Still, Joe understands that Trask is not a baby and there are many ways to manage people. Bowles certainly knows Trask better than Joe does.

Joe remembers when former head coach Dirk Koetter said after the Bucs drafted O.J. Howard in the first round that he was going to call Cameron Brate, who had just come off a 57-catch, 8-touchdown season.

The Bucs are 22 days from reporting to work at One Buc Palace.

  1. Da Bucs Guy Says:

Trask was an Arians draft pick. And we all know that as Head Coach Arians had never drafted a QB that worked out.

Trade Trask and draft a QB that will fit the new offense.

  2. Geno711 Says:

What does that even mean Da Bucs Guy?

The only QB that Arians ever drafted as a Head Coach was Kyle Trask.

  3. Craig Says:

I am not sure the collective bargaining agreement allows such contact.

If it does, then it was not a good way to do it, it makes it seem like yet another year of a farcical competition.

Maybe the Bowles cleaner is still trying to break away from Arians fame; if so, he is running scared.

  4. TampaBayBucsFanSince1976 Says:

Trask will prove his detractors wrong if it is a truly FAIR QB competition.

  5. Bobby M. Says:

In some format, Bowles has seen how Trask operates. Maybe on the scout team, training camp, etc. Guys that can execute at the NFL level tend to leave an impression behind the scenes with the coaches and players. Nobody has ever raved about Trask in any capacity other than he’s a “hard worker”. If you’re the 3rd string QB and you’re not a hard worker, you’re toast.

  6. Buddha Says:

    Hard up for news. Joe?

  7. optimisticbucsfan Says:

Anyone get the feeling Trask will go elsewhere after this year and be successful?

    It’s the Bucs way

  8. Duane Says:

So now JBF adds the “why didn’t he call me?” test to the mountain of other silly arguments he’s lodged in support of his theory that the quarterback competition is fake, despite numerous statements by GM and coaches that there most certainly IS a competition for that starting job.

Those enough poop at the wall and surely some of it will stick, Joe?

  9. Mort Says:

He was the only one on the roster – it shouldn’t surprise him that they added one in free agency, and that they’ll likely add another between the draft and the UDFAs, because they’re taking 4 to camp…

  10. garro Says:

Bowles is turning this into a bigger fiasco than I thought possible. I’m starting to hope that Trask makes it impossible to “ignore” him come training camp.

  11. Letsbucinggo Says:

Just another reason Bowles is a back stabbing loser, thats one of the reasons the team lack motivation during last season. One of the players on offense said Bowles did not ever talk to them in practice he just stayed with the defensive players. When your the head coach you have to communicate with all your players I will repeat this again the man is not a head coach and never will be wake up Glazers there are 7 or 8 of you in the front office for Christ sakes.
    .

  12. Redeemer Says:

The powers that be have made their feelings plain on Trask. What did bowles say, he needs competition? That’s code for he’s not ready. They all know it. This continued nonsense that Trask didn’t get a fair look is insane. How many games has he dressed for? Nobody drafts a guy 64 overall, to not be given a chance at the backup spot. Fact remains he couldn’t beat out gabbert . This is not a competition. Unless baker blows out his ACL in camp, he’ll be the starter.

  13. Mike S Says:

Flat out disrespect. I’m with Garro.

None of us will have to deal with this nonsense next season. Bowles will be gone and we’ll hopefully have better leadership.

  14. Defense Rules Says:

Joe … ‘One might think Bowles would have picked up the phone to call Trask after the Mayfield signing, just for the sake of communicating to the 2021 second-round pick where he stands and to keep up his spirits.’

What does that even mean? For the sake of communicating to Trask where he stands? Duh, there are TWO QBs on the roster now so MAYBE Kyle would expect a competition for the starting position? Just a guess though.

Bowles has previously told the world that there’ll be a COMPETITION. I for one take him at his word, even though many others obviously don’t.
Trask’s a big boy; surely he never expected the starting QB job to be handed to him. If he needs Bowles or Canales or anyone else to motivate him to give his best to WIN the starting nod then he’s already lost the competition.

  15. Joe in Michigan Says:

I know some of you hate Bowles, but what has Trask done to deserve a phone call about a Bucs roster move? Do you think they called last year’s 3rd string running back when they signed Edmonds? Get real.

  16. Defense Rules Says:

Redeemer … ‘Fact remains he couldn’t beat out gabbert’.

We both know that Arians wanted Gabbert as the backup, and so did Brady. Trask was never even in contention for the #2 spot. His job was to observe and learn; that’s it.

Trask MIGHT be our QB of the future. No way to know based on what we’ve seen to date. Mayfield almost surely WON’T be our QB of the future. If he does poorly this year, the answers clear. If he does very well, he’ll be selling his services to the highest bidder (and that won’t be us).

Personally all I want is a FAIR COMPETITION, but I will freely admit, I’m rooting for Trask. We can’t afford to pay big bucks this year OR next year for a starting QB. Far too many other needs have to be filled to build a quality TEAM that can capitalize on a good starting QB’s talent.

  17. Redeemer Says:

Defense, you know in your heart this isn’t a competition. Idc what bowles says, it’s lip service. The only way baker isn’t the starter, is if he falls on his face and Trask shines. Both are incredibly unlikely imo. As for if he should’ve called Trask, why? To tell him we signed a guy with a ton more experience? This will be a coronation, not a competition.

  18. Tvan101 Says:

Defense Rules as has been stated many times, Brady preffered Gabbert assisting on the sidelines because he is a veteran. Who knows what would have happened if Brady was injured.

  19. Mike S Says:

Redeemer you don’t think Mayfield will fall on his face? The guy throws a ton of INTs. Trask probably won’t get the nod out of camp, but before this year is out Trask will get the ball.

  20. Redeemer Says:

Defense, please. It’s always a competition. You really believe they drafted a QB 64 overall to sit and learn? It’s not the way the league works and you know that. The best players play. Then they get slotted appropriately. I firmly believe they drafted Trask with the intention he’d take over once Brady left. That’s the way it works. Bruce arians wasn’t the coach last year. Did this conspiracy continue into the bowels administration? It’s utter nonsense.

  21. Mike S Says:

optimisticbucsfan its guaranteed at this point

  22. Eckwood Says:

The littlest things say allot !! Loser Move by Bowles !!!

  23. Tampabaybucfan Says:

Perhaps it should have been Trask that called Bowles……”Hey Todd…..what in the f””ck are you doin’ bro?….Get rid of Byron…..Brady be gone….and you bring in this punk to compete? WTF?”

  24. 1#bucsfan Says:

i don’t watch college ball so I’m not one of those gator fans but I am rooting for trask. I’m hoping for a fair competition but I really do t believe Bowles. I think he’s going to ride with mayfield cause he prob thinks he will get more wins n save his job. I see people complain about trask n judge him based off his time in preseason n garbage time of the ATL game. Either one of those he didn’t play with the starters. I’m not saying he’s going to be a legit QB but you give him our starters n see what he does maybe he lights it up or he flunks. DEFENSE you hit the nail on the head about BA n Brady wanting gabbert as the #2. Trask was 3rd strong only cause of the experience not cause he couldn’t beat out gabbert. He for sure wasn’t unseating Brady. It’s a win win if we start trask if you really take the blinders off n think about it. If trask does well we have our future QB if he does terrible then it puts us in a better position to draft his replacement next year. Trask has literally done nothing to deserve the disrespect some of you commenters throw at him but haters can only do one thing n that’s hate

  25. Tye Says:

No one has ever accused Todd of doing anything right as a HC!

  26. Geno711 Says:

I for one believe that this is a generally good coaching staff. The biggest question is whether Todd Bowles is a head coaching material. Evidence suggests no.

However, even if Todd Bowles is a bad head coach, he and the other coaches know whether Trask has been any good or not. It is pretty evident that Trask has sucked in his two years here. That is why the team went out and got Baker Mayfield.

However, that does not mean that now that Brady is gone that Trask does not somehow see his opportunity and fully realizes a high ceiling and becomes a successful QB for the Bucs.

The conspiracy theories are pretty funny though.

  27. Joe in Michigan Says:

Joe: Do we know if Canales or Thad Lewis called Trask? That would make more sense, anyway.

  28. Louis Friend Says:

This is a case of a staff writer at joebucsfan who reads too many TMZ and New York Post articles.

    “But what about?….”
    “Did they consider…?”
“What did they mean when they….?”

It makes money. Heck, I’m commenting on it. Doesn’t mean it’s remotely journalistic or relevant.

So silly. Bowles said this in a public forum and Joe didn’t ask the question. If Bowles had said he called Trask, most would say that’s newsworthy, but somehow the opposite isn’t true? Joe writes about what Joe finds interesting. That’s the only plan here. Thankfully, loads of people like it. Journalistic or relevant are subjective adjectives. –Joe

  29. Louis Friend Says:

One other thing….I get the feeling a lot of people who visit this site also read, watch and believe in conspiracy theories elsewhere. They’re always looking at what the ‘other guy’ is “really doing” or is “really saying” when something happens. Nothing is ever REAL until their theory or belief comes true.

  30. sasquatch Says:

Did you ask if Canales or Thad Lewis had reached out to Trask.

The head coach doesn’t have to be the primary contact for the players, especially not a guy who hasn’t yet proven to be more than a 3rd string QB.

What it does demonstrate is that Bowles doesn’t really see Trask as his “franchise” QB. Going into year 3, if you are still a question mark, you’re probably not the guy.

The Trask Suppression Conspiracy goes all the way to the top! 🤣

  31. Buccos Says:

Did Trask call Mayfield to congratulate him and welcome him?

  32. Chris O Says:

Baker will beat out trask for the starting job, easily. I think he plays well and Bucs win like 7-8 games. Draft Bijan and this offense is much scarier

  33. Bucsmarley Says:

Been a fan since the 70’s and I find the current fan base as idiots (some)
We are arguing over Trask vs baker
    1. If baker was worth a sh** he would be on his 4th team
    2. Sure baker has more experience but what’s the point of losing in the 1st rnd of playoffs and having a shitty pick
    3. See this many times in buc history. Go ahead let Trask go and light it up somewhere else. It’s a Bucs life

    4. No one believes we can win a superbowl with baker so what’s to point of not seeing the kid you drafted 5. Bowels is a clown

  34. Trask To The Future Says:

The reality is, Trask was probably already told that they were going to be signing a vet QB before they signed Mayfield and for him not to worry.

Again, I don’t get the “Mayfield is the starter” hype. He has struggled in the NFL and the Bucs have much greater upside if Trask plays well. He’s younger and much cheaper.

  35. sasquatch Says:

Mayfield is the starter because he’s more talented than Trask, smarter than Trask, has more leadership skills than Trask, and has waaay more experience than Trask. Mayfield has won games in the NFL. If Trask was going to be a quality starter in this league, I think they’d know it by now and wouldn’t have signed an alpha like Mayfield to “compete” with him.

  36. Goatfarmer Says:

    – Bloweszo could have four aces in 5 card stud and fold

    – There are still at least two more QBs to be added to the roster. Maybe Bloweszo will call Mayfield to tell him, but won’t call Trask.

    – Everyone on the Bucs hates Trask and wants him to fail.

    – Bloweszo may be incompetent, but even he knows that he has to win or else. Yet, even if Trask is the best option, Bowels won’t go with him because he’d rather be fired than watch Trask succeed with the Bucs. That’s how unfair it is for #2.

  37. HC Grover Says:

The Bowles Curse. Trask will prolly be one of those Buc QB’s that bolts and wins a Super Bowl with another team.

  38. Infomeplease Says:

Let’s face it… not one person novice or expert talking head thinks Todd Bowles is a great head coach! This is just one if his many, many, blunders as the Bucs head coach. More to come, unfortunately!

Yes, hold your breath and wait for this to happen.

  41. Infomeplease Says:

You can’t expect Todd Bowles to always do the right thing. That’s what great head coaches do. Or st least, mostly. You know, care about their player’s feelings. If a player is feeling good, he probably will perform better than if he’s not.

  42. Oneilbuc Says:

Baker Mayfield is trash and yes he will start because this fan base cares more about names than production. Baker Mayfield is on his 4th team in 6 years which is the most teams for a quarterback drafted number one overall in the history of the NFL. And this is the guy yall want to start lol 🤣🤣🤣. Kyle Trask will be the starter before week 8 . Now to me it’s a strong possibility the bucs might draft a quarterback in the first round because Todd Bowles never drafted a quarterback before as a head coach so he just may draft a quarterback with the 19th pick depending who’s there. And I won’t be mad at it at this point. But truth of the matter is Kyle Trask will be another quarterback that the bucs failed to develop. But I would understand if Todd Bowles drafted a quarterback with the 19th pick because he never got a chance to bring in his own quarterback.

  43. gp Says:

There are several here who think that I am a “Trask hater”.
    This is not true.
I would like to see Trask succeed for many of the same reasons that his supporters do. But most of all, because he would be a (at least temporarily) cheap option.
Unfortunately, all of my knowledge of Trask and his abilities is anecdotal, I’ve never met him or seen him play. (the Atl game doesn’t really count)
The problem I see, is that everywhere he has played, he sat the bench and waited his turn to be the starter.
He can’t do that in the NFL.
If he doesn’t fight for the starting position, he doesn’t deserve it. End of story.
Regarding Bowles calling him or not…
Reportedly, Bowles had limited, if any, contact with the best to ever play the game. I’m sure he had even less contact with Trask. Those who did have contact with him, coaching wise, are no longer with the team. Any opinions of his strengths and weaknesses left with them. I don’t know if this is a good thing, or bad.
If Bowles were more of a Head Coach, and less of a responsibility delegator, he might have had more reason to call

  44. unbelievable Says:

It’s not like Todd Bowles communicated with the former starting QB either.

I totally understand Joes point, but not gonna overreact when the head coach is pretty much hands off with the offense in general.

  45. SufferingSince76 Says:

The Bucs shouldn’t be handing anything to anyone. Let Trask compete. To not do so would be negligent.

  46. Defense Rules Says:

‘Joe writes about what Joe finds interesting. That’s the only plan here. Thankfully, loads of people like it. Journalistic or relevant are subjective adjectives.’

JBF is a blog, and because of that it’s much more of a free-for-all than most other media formats. The ‘facilitator’ is just as free to offer their OPINIONS as everyone else. But as Joe has surely experienced many times, they’re just as likely to be attacked for stating their OPINIONS as anyone else is too. And yes Joe, in the case of any blog, ‘journalistic’ is a subjective adjective. That’s the nature of the beast I suppose.

  49. EEK Says:

If Trask can’t beat out Mayfield then I think that’s probably the end for him.

You THINK you know, but do you really? If so, who will win the NFC South?

  53. Redeemer Says:

Anyone who thinks Tom Brady dictated who his backup was is crazy. That’s so far away from his MO it’s not even funny. Brady craved good coaching and I seriously doubt he’d make any such demands. If Trask who was given ample opportunity to prove himself, could’ve beaten out gabbert, the backup job would’ve been his. I never played in the league, but if this conspiracy was true, the team did a disservice to themselves and the player. They all get a chance to show what they have. It’s called practice. If BA and or Bowles was too stupid to do that, then we’re in a hell of a lot more trouble than I thought. It’s called a depth chart for a reason. Jesus Christ

  54. Brazen Zebra Says:

Yep, Bowles is a natural born DC. Bring back Bruce. Go Bucs!

  55. Joe in Michigan Says:

I do appreciate the Joe Bucs Fan website, and not only because my name is Joe and I’m a Bucs fan! Keep up the great work, gentlemen!

  56. Buc4evr Says:

Not a Trask fan at all, but the guy deserves a true chance to start and some level of respect. Bowles is a loser, disappointing that he couldn’t even call Trask to relay the signing. To put it succinctly, Bowles is a loser in all aspects. The guy makes me sick.

  57. JeffreyLane77 Says:

Chances are this is Trask’s last season in Tampa. I fully expect Licht to draft a QB project in the later rounds this year.

  58. Goatfarmer Says:

Osqueel apparently knows that Bloweszo reads the fan poll and if the fans want him to start Norm Snead, he’ll start Norm Snead. Osqueel should stop huffing the paint thinner and take a nap.

JBF posters are personnel directors and in charge of who starts! Not the people paid by the Glazers to decide!

Osqueel may win maroon of the year.

  59. Mark Higgins Says:

For some reason Todd Bowles is referred to as a Coach, he’s far from a coach. Sad very sad !!

  60. OrlandoBucFan Says:

I think it would have been a nice gesture to reach out to Trask, but I have no problem if that didn’t happen. I am sure Trask reads Bucs sports related news, so he had to know the Bucs were going to bring in veteran to compete with him (or to at least create that appearance). I think this is a good opportunity for Trask. He should get more reps with the 1’s and 2’s and be the back up…..if he loses the “competition.” I am not convinced Mayfield can stay healthy for 17 games, so there should be a few opportunities for Trask to start and show everyone that he is capable. Brock Purdy needed, what, six games to convince the 49er’s he is their guy?

  61. Oneilbuc Says:

Goofarmer. It’s call business the fan base are the cusemer if you want to make money and the fan base wants a name than yes you give them a name to sale tickets. That’s been the problem with this fan base and franchise in the past they have saling us names and that’s why this the worst franchise in all of sports the fan base sucks. I have never seen or heard of a Steelers fan say tank and that’s why they are always in mist of a playoff birth . They haven’t had a losing season in over 20 years. Even when Big Ben retire they still hold their franchise accountable for winning. If the bucs tank we will lose the next 10 years just like all the other times. And y’all will turn on Caleb Williams or Drake May in 2025 . Mark my words !!!

I agree with every word of this.

I do not want the job handed to either one. I want it earned.

And if I believed this would be a fair competition, I would be happy with that.

But here’s the thing…I also lean toward Trask…or a rookie. Because even I. His best year, Baker has had a 60% losing percentage. So, nomatter how much some here protest, Baker has very little chance of having a good year.

Think we’ll have a strong run game, better play calling and such, but that is pure hope until it happens, and it certainly did not help Baker much in the past. Defenses will pressure him, and he’ll have Winston-like turnovers.

Will Trask be better? Who knows? Those of you who claim he won’t be aguessing, just like the rest of us.

That’s why we want a fair competition. And Bowles won’t give it to us.

    Best hope is

  66. Defense Rules Says:

Bonzai … For Bowles … and the Bucs … to succeed this year, he needs Canales to really grab our offense by the cajones and run with it. Like every defensive HC, he needs a very strong OC who can operate relatively independently. My gut feel is that’s why Bowles picked Canales; the last thing Bowles wants (and needs) is a weak OC. We’ll have so many problems on defense this season that Bowles will need to give that almost all of his attention IF he remains dual-hatted as the DC (I still think that might change before Game 1 though).

The ideal situation for Canales is to run a FAIR COMPETITION, have Trask beat out Mayfield, BUT keep him on a short leash. IF he does well, we’ve got our QB for the next several years. IF Trask poops on the field, Mayfield will be chomping at the bit to take his place & prove himself. And IF Mayfield craps all over the field, our QB #3 (and we will have one) will get his chance to strut his stuff. IF all 3 crap out, we should end up with a high draft pick next season, which is supposed to have a very good QB crop. There’s a positive behind every door, even if they wind up being slammed in our face.

  67. 407bucfan Says:

Do you think Ryan Griffen or Gabbert got a call when Brady was signed?I don’t think they worry about what the backup and third string QB thinks of a signing

  68. 80forBrady Says:

I wonder if Gaebert will be re-signed as the 3rd QB in camp or maybe even RYan Griffin or Josh Johnson or will the Bucs will look to sign a more mobil QB who can run the Wildcat as an undrafted player or later round pick?

  69. sasquatch Says:

If Gabbert was re-signed, Trask would be #3 again. 🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣

  70. Defense Rules Says:

Mark Higgins … ‘For some reason Todd Bowles is referred to as a Coach, he’s far from a coach. Sad very sad !!’

That’s a very unfair assessment Mark; Todd Bowles has shown himself to be an excellent DEFENSIVE coach. His results as a Head Coach have been less than stellar to be blunt, BUT … I personally don’t give a crap about his time with the NY Jets (hey, they’re the JETS) and there were lots of ‘extenuating circumstances’ here last season. Far as I’m concerned, he’s our head coach & I’m rooting for him to succeed.

That said, 2023 is an uphill battle from the git-go. Heck, without Tom Brady, Gronk, Antonio Brown, Fournette, Wirfs, Winfield & a few other above average talents, Bruce Arians was 7-9 here. A lesser talent level made all the difference in 2022 IMO, and it MAY have the same or even greater impact in 2023. Still a LOT of questions to be answered. But regardless of how it turns out, it never falls exclusively on one person. Losing, like winning, is a TEAM endeavor.

  71. steele Says:

This simply adds to the unending pile of proof that Todd Bowles is not a good head coach. Again and again, no leadership, no unifying direction for the team or the locker room. No one “on the same page”, he, staff and players on their own, wondering what the hell is going on. Including on the field.

A headless team at the top. He didn’t talk to Brady. Shrug. He doesn’t talk to Trask. Shrug. Tells Rah Rah Canales the kid to do it. “It’s your offense. Not my concern.”

  72. Redeemer Says:

    GF, roflmao 🤣

Oneilbuc you apparently equate winning to a name. Like so many delusional posters here, you don’t understand how the league works. Bowles will be fired and Trask will either be traded to some other stupid org, or given his outright release. They didnt sign baker because he’s a name. He was signed because Trask hasn’t made the progress they thought he would. Keep believing in this nonsensical theory that Brady actually picked his backup. It’s a merit based system, just like real life. The Rooney rule being the only exception.

  73. Brandon Jeff Says:

Gabbert was not resigned because Trask beat him out!

  74. JA Says:

Like all who post here, we’ve not seen enough of Trask to make a true judgement. But Bowles, in his infinite wisdom and supreme judge of talent, apparently has.
If records mean anything in the NFL, Todd Bowles would be considered a loser. Same can be said about Mayfield so there’s a bond between the two. It’s no small wonder they love each other.
Trask has no record, so the only thing we have to go on is the opinion of an NFL loser.
I love it how Trask haters, who’ve never seen him play a single minute of football with Bucs starters, think Bowles knows what he’s talking about in this instance but think him an idiot in everything else.

  75. Oneilbuc Says:

Redeemer. I know how the league works but this has nothing to do with the league. And again I don’t think no one has said Trask is a guarantee hall of famer or he’s going to be good. But just like no one can say he’s going to be good no one can say he’s going to be bad . But what I do know is Baker Mayfield has shown that he’s not good and again this is his 4th team and 6 years and played for the most teams in 6 years by any quarterback drafted number one overall that’s a fact not a opinion. I don’t know how good Trask is or even how bad he is I just believe in wait and see. Ira Kaufman has said no one seen him with the starters so I rather see him with the starters before I make my judgement on Trask. But a lot of y’all think Caleb Williams and Drake May is a guarantee great quarterback in the NFL and you don’t know if they’re going to be good until they get their chance to play. That’s where I at with this situation. But y’all love to call people names just because they don’t agree with you are just constantly bash Kyle Trask every time his name comes up.

  76. Oneilbuc Says:

JA . Good comment bro you see how they contradict them selfs like I do !! Lol 😂😂😂.

  77. Elita Vita Says:

Hmmm….. some rift between Bowles & Trask? Maybe there needs to be more insight on their relationship. Is Trask in the dog house for some reason behind the scenes ?

  78. Larrd Says:

Calling Trask was a no-brainer. Even Ray Perkins would show that minimal amount of respect for a player. Who wants a pissed off or completely dejected backup quarterback?

  79. D-Rok Says:

Trask was the ONLY QB on the roster at the time – what, did he think no other QB’s would be signed/drafted? This is ridiculous – whether Bowles called him or not is of no consequence, at all. Trask knows (hopefully he knows) a team needs at least 3 QB’s – it’s just common sense to realize somebody would be signed.

If I were Trask, I’d realize I’m not Tom Brady and therefore somebody will/would be added to the roster.

    All these debates…fairness/competition….geez.

The Bucs will field whomever they feel gives them the best chance to win, and it’s as simple as that.

That being said, we only have 2 QB’s on the roster at the moment. Who will be the 3rd or 4th? I’m waiting for the roster to be set before I debate anything. We have months of waiting to wait for…so wait!!!

  80. D-Rok Says:

PS: Do I think Bowles should have called Trask about the Mayfield signing? Yes, yes I do – in the spirit of transparency. It’s what a coach with good communication skills would do.

  81. Mike S Says:

Why are people arguing about Trask-Mayfield on April 2nd in a cap reset year that’s probably going to be lost anyway?

Because there are higher stakes here.

There are a dozen indicators in a large enough sample size to know what Baker Mayfield is – he’s a guy on his 4th team in 6 years who has thrown more INTs than any QB since he’s been in the league who has a losing record as a starter.

We have a HC who’s never had a winning record coaching this team that couldn’t get to .500 last year with Tom Brady.

We got a new OC who’s never called plays talking about how they’re going to bring back Buc Ball 3 yards and cloud of dust.

If you’re rooting to have Baker Mayfield start you’re a clown, because what you’re rooting for is a torpedo season where we don’t give the young QB we drafted the reps he needs to salvage something useful out of this year.

If you think we’re going to make a SB run with Mayfield – LOL you need your head examined. These are organizational unforced errors.

  82. Goatfarmer Says:

Osqueel thinks that the fans determine the starting lineup! Osqueel should write Bowels a letter, oh wait, that would require him to know how to write – Squeel doesn’t realize he’s responsible for winning and could give a rat’s arse who Osqueel or Trask to the Dumpster thinks should start.

Bowels will start the players he believes give the team the best chance to win. And if osqueel doesn’t think he’ll do that then he should be in favor of firing him this second. Wait, since they care so much about what fans think that’s the way to do it! We just demand Bowels be fired and it will be so!

Have another dose of antifreeze, you maroon.

  83. Mike S Says:

Elita Vita Bowles is betting his coaching career on Baker Mayfield.

We’re in for a loooooong season.

  84. Mike S Says:

Kyle Trask could look like Neo in the Matrix and it wouldn’t matter. Mayfield’s getting the ball. Then when the Bucs are 1-7 we’ll see Trask take over a demoralized team. Bucs will probably finish 5-12 and Bowles will be fired.

  85. Goatfarmer Says:

Mike S — that may indeed happen. Bowels knows it, that’s why he is going to select the player who gives him the best chance of keeping his job. Now, you indeed may know more than he does, but you’re posting here and he’s making millions a year deciding who will play quarterback for him. Maybe if you provided him with your stats and data instead of being a swinging Richard, he would listen.

And anyone that thinks he is purposely going to start a lesser performing player should also be in favor of Bowels being fired today. This second.

  86. Buc king Says:

Trask needs to get in his playbook know the playbook blindfolded..impress his offense coordinator win over his wide receiver room.
Show up early leave late..call for meet ups with offense and practice like Brady did.
Only one way to set your self apart..be undeniable..
All these years behind the greatest to do it..you have no excuse..call Brady tap into his knowledge..
I could never be in the room with the greatest of anything and not be taking note and recording at all times..mirroring everything to the point the goat would ask me to chill out..if he takes a drink of water I drink..he goes to talk to a coach I stand there..he makes any pass I practice it 100x ..
I would look to match his greatness..if you can’t do it with the best showing you then you deserve a boot..
I loved Trask in college I thought he was on par with anyone else coming out.
Like to see him succeed but I wont make excuses if he doesn’t..
I also think baker is a Johnny manziel type player idk if he’s a bust but I will say Jeff garcia low end..drew Brees if football goods shine on him…I prefer tall big qbs who see over the line and can slang it…
Running nice on madden buy in NFL I prefer pocket presence

  87. Oneilbuc Says:

Goofarmer. I can see you don’t have a clue how business work again look at the history stupid. Y’all wanted BL gone because you couldn’t see that Brady sucked without AB and Gronk and y’all made BL the scapegoat. I know you hope the bucs lose this year because you really not a real bucs fan. And I also know it’s a lot of you fantasy football guys so most of yall are more fans of players than the team. That’s why you called me a Brady hater because I didn’t make him the only reason why we won the super bowl. And I knew Brady was going to suck without AB and Gronk. I saw how Brady looked in 2019 but the true definition of haten is when you don’t even know how good a player is but you criticize him without facts and you are trying to make your opinion a fact. I’m done commenting on your opinion. But I know one thing is if Trask is the starter you are going to hope and pray he sucks just like a hater lol 🤣🤣🤣!!

  88. Oneilbuc Says:

If Will Levis is their I got a strange feeling that the bucs are going to draft him in the first round. That’s a Jason Licht type of move especially when Todd Bowles never drafted a quarterback as a head coach.

  89. Goatfarmer Says:

Osqueel you can be the new GM, with a mandate from the fans!!!

First you have to answer these questions.

    1. Who were the 9 wins against that you said the defense got the Bucs in an 8 win season?

    2. Who is “y’all?”

    3. Have you ever seen a picture of Brian Flores?

The one who hates the Bucs is you. You hated Brady, hated his success, couldn’t wait for him to be gone, and now that there is a flux at quarterback, all you do is throw shade at everything.

Truly if all the village maroons got together in one village, you would be voted the village maroon.

  90. Kevin Young Says:

Bowles isn’t a leader … he needs a strong HC to tell him what’s up …

  91. Usfbuc Says:

I don’t know that a call was needed. Might have been nice but the team signing another QB shouldn’t come as a surprise.

Do I agree that Bowles should have probably been given the ax too. He is the least inspiring coach I have ever seen.

I do love the people posting here about how their options are somehow more valid than another persons opinions. If one person’s opinion isn’t valid here then none are. Nobody here is talking or developing their opinions with any insider knowledge or experience in the NFL.

  92. Timothy Raymer Says:

@mike s. Right on. I believe you nailed it.

  93. Bosch Says:

Trask has been buried so deep in this roster that there is little any one posting on this site knows about how good or how poor he is. What we all do know is Turd Bowel movement is a historically poor HC in virtually every measure of an HC. It is easy to fathom he would start Mayfield and continue to stick by him regardless of how he plays just because he is his “guy.” Not calling Trask was a classless act that he has added to his sad legacy.

  94. sasquatch Says:

Making an issue of calling a guy who has never been more than a 3rd string QB because you signed an experienced QB is just looking for another excuse to bash Bowles. I mean, who says Trask wasn’t contacted by Thad Lewis or Dave Canales? We don’t know. This is another bogus non-issue for the sh!t-on-Bowles crowd.

Trask hasn’t earned anything yet. He’s not our franchise QB, he has no standing. He has a roster spot, that’s it. I don’t see why anyone cares whether Todd Bowles personally called him to talk about signing Mayfield. Jeezus H. Kreiste people, get a grip on reality!

  95. Delusional Intelligence Says:

This Joe, sure does love a good soap opera. I wonder who was given Brady’s parking space? That will surely let us know who has the starting job, because if you have 6 quarterbacks at training camp you have no quarterback. Just ask Shawn King!

  96. Goatfarmer Says:

One should ask, “Why has Trask been buried so deep in this roster?”

Has he earned that spot through his play in practice? Or, is it The Trask Suppression Conspiracy???????????????

Bowels was seen whispering to Licht while sneering at Trask a while ago. That’s the proof.
