Todd Bowles: Teams Will Have To Start Double-Teaming Julio Jones

November 29th, 2022

When last seen double-covered, Julio Jones hauled in a 26-yard Tom Brady pass with about 9 seconds left in regulation time Sunday in a tie game against the Browns. … Too bad there wasn’t more time on the clock.

Julio finished with 3 catches for 40 yards and a fast and powerful reverse run for 15 yards that finished with him lowering his shoulder to deliver a hit.

That was Julio’s fourth consecutive game playing a lot of snaps. Believe it or not, Julio has played in five of the Bucs’ 11 games.

Speaking on the Buccaneers Radio Network today, Todd Bowles put the NFL on notice.

“He adds so much mentally,” Bowles said of Julio. “He understands the game. He helps the receivers out as far as route running and what they’re trying to do.

“But physically he’s rounding back into shape. And he’s becoming a very viable receiver for us that we can go to when [Mike Evans and Chris Godwin] are double-teamed.  And you’re going to have to start double teaming Julio because he’s getting healthier and healthier.”

There aren’t a ton of reasons for optimism when it comes to the Bucs offense, but Julio nearing 100 percent health is one of them. He looks sharp and he’s logged a healthy load of snaps over the last month.

Perhaps Bowles, Tom Brady and the playcaller will figure out how to score points with three receivers worthy of double teams.

Stfu Todd I’m sick of you already. No one is worried about this offense bc of you

  2. BucFanForever Says:

They will double team Julio and then we will do a halfback dive play on 1st and ten

  3. ViSyl Says:

While they double julio we will run up the middle and get a 3 and out

  4. Jmarkbuc Says:

Why? Is he gonna call a timeout?

  5. LongSeason Says:

When they going to court Sean Payton?

  6. MadMax Says:

You can coat a turd with all the sugar you want Bowles….theres hopefully about to be a double firing….

I know its a lot to ask for Mr. Licht, but just end the suffering right now while we just might be able to go on a tiny run (i know, big bad joke there)…Go get Frank Reich, its not too late.

  7. TDavis Says:

Haha he thinks teams are gonna have to be WORRIED? About this offense?? LOLOLOLOLOL

  8. Leopold Stotch Says:

Yeah great, double team Julio, and not do anything with the offense. Sorry Todd, lost faith with you already.

  9. unbelievable Says:

I will say Julio has looked much stronger / in football shape these last 2 games. He’s been throwing some hard blocks, and taking contact after catches, etc.

If our coaching staff wasn’t completely inept, stubborn, and in over their heads, it would have me excited for the rest of the season.

  10. Darin Says:

Lmao. He’s getting three targets a game and someone is gona be that stupid? Only the Bucs coaches are that stupid. Bowles won’t even double team Kupp. Dump the insane clown posse!

  11. SPARKY Says:

No difference, they don’t have to double Evans anymore.

  12. WillieG Says:

Why would anyone cover him? Leftwich sure as hell isn’t going to use him properly.

  13. SB~LV Says:

These coaches can barely win regular season games, they are far from a postseason team and I don’t count the Wildcard games as the Playoffs
I makes me angry to read these stories (reminders) of this misery
    The Lost Season

  14. PewterStiffArm Says:

You can double team him every game but if you have play calling like you’ve had for the last eleven games good luck trying to get it to him.We have the greatest quarterback to ever play the game handing it off stack left with no holes. Julio should be running no more than 10 to 15 yards down the field, curl back to start getting first downs. Playoffs?, Playoffs?, good luck with that. I love my Bucs but they are dieing right infront of our eyes and they ain’t crap we can do about it except pulling out some boo birds Monday night.

  15. Cchead Says:

Wanna score more than 18 ppg. Can Leftwich and let Brady call his own plays at the line of scrimmage.

  16. Simeon97 Says:

I think UFCguy summed up everyones feelings.

  17. Simeon97 Says:

Seriously though, isn’t arians an advisor to this team? he needs to start advising a bit more.

  18. D-Rok Says:

No team will start doubling Julio UNTIL he starts torching teams for touchdowns. Touchdowns…now that’s an interesting concept. I wonder if BL has heard of touchdowns? I like touchdowns.

With a healthy JJ, ME, and CG, we should be going scorched earth on teams with 30 points and 350 yards passing.

Instead, we are running dives off left guard. Oh, my bad, there was a fake screen one time.

These coaches are truly clueless with this talent, and instead of maximizing OUR strengths and going after the weaknesses of the Browns, we are too afraid of a mystical, magical interception and allow it to bounce off our empty craniums like a game of pong, and we go into total turtle mode.

Geez. Pathetic words from our “head coach” this week.

IF, just IF, Todd would said in his presser, “You know, I thought not calling a TO was correct in that moment, but after reviewing film, I stand corrected and made a mistake that time. I’ll learn from this and won’t do it again,” IF he would said that, this fan wouldn’t now think he’s an actor from Mars Attacks. ACK! ACK!! ACKETY-ACK!!!

    LOL, sadly.

  19. captivajim Says:

    A rookie ( emerson ) did a very good job of neutalizing Evans–one-on-one !!

  20. D-Rok Says:

    captiva,

Either this rookie Emerson is truly a stud, or Evans is truly hurt. ME went through the motions against the Browns, but he had little juice, burst, or heart.

Not saying Emerson is any good cuz I know nothing about him, but Deion Sanders was once a rookie, too, so maybe this kid is gonna be great – and if so, good for the Browns.

  21. Darin Says:

Of course he went through the motions D. He’s being asked to run the same plays and routes time after time. Hard to get open when the dbs know where you’re going. The route tree is very limited out of every formation. Then offense is as basic as can be. Watch the film.

  22. steele Says:

Julio is not a threat. Not until he starts showing like Julio prime. I don’t see D coordinators bothering doubling him. Bowles wishes.

  23. ScottyMack Says:

The only hope the Bucs have is not for this year, it’s for next season. They need to fire Bowles and Leftwich and lure Sean Payton to the head coaching job. Hopefully, that’s enough incentive for Brady to add another year.

  24. ClwJB Says:

Idiotic take – you don’t use the receivers that are healthy correctly, what makes anyone think you or the ham sandwich have any clue what to do on offense

They have blown up what should have been an 11-12 win season and we will be damn lucky to win 3 more games

Carolina schooled us, 5 more minutes and ATL does too, bengals and 49ers are likely a going to whip us – maybe a shot VS the Cardinals

The aints have the same problem we have- the daddy left the building – so maybe one false hope there

It will be only fitting for this season, we need to win to get in versus Atlanta at home and we lose to close out the misery

Would the glazers wake up then?

  25. Kentucky Buc Says:

    TB. Tone deaf Bowels.

  26. StretchOMatic Says:

Let’s break this down, so they double Evans, Godwin and Jones….might be a good time for Leftwich and Bowles to call a surprise 3rd down punt as to not risk a turnover. I shouldn’t say that, they may be reading this page and think that is actually a good idea! LOL

  27. Bucfan1988 Says:

Ima give ME13 the benefit of the doubt on the lack of chemistry with TB12 on some of those passes on Sunday.

That field in Cleveland was pretty gnarley and it was raining off & on as well…
Field was slick and I’m sure that impacts explosion and get off from the LOS…

    No excuses Monday nite….
ME13 needs to make a statement!
Not even sure if Lattimore is playing? He been injured…

  28. Redeemer Says:

Get ready bucs fans. Teams will be deploying an anti ballistic defense system to stop a guy with 14 catches on the season. That way Godwin and Evans will be free!!!! I can’t wait. From your lips to God’s ears Toodles

  29. D-Rok Says:

Agree, Darin. Vanilla and basic schemes and calls. BL is calling Pinto and Gremlin plays cuz he thinks we are a 1.3L diesel tricycle, when in reality we are a naturally-aspirated, blown Hemi coupled with a nitrous boost, if only he could release the parking brake and not prematurely deploy the parachute before we get off the line.

Such a waste of interpretation of talent and potential.

  30. D-Rok Says:

And since the pitchforks are out, please nobody talk crap about Hemi’s. I just bought a Hemi about 6 months ago and I love it.

Plus it has Sport Mode, which is more than I can say for TB, BL, et al. They seem to be stuck in EcoMode.

  31. Kentucky Buc Says:

While everybody’s double teamed Bucs can run QB sneak or just take a knee so they don’t throw an interception.

  32. D-Rok Says:

    Redeemer,

I’m pretty sure you meant to say Phalanx CIWS system.

  33. Goatfarmer Says:

    Brian Flores or Eric Bienemy.

  34. LastDance Says:

Yeah… make sure you get all 3 of your top receivers double teamed and then instead of running a play… sh!t yourself because you are too scared to actually RUN THE PLAY!

DAMMMM dude… I read this and laughed out loud and got a nasty look! HAHAHA

  36. D-Rok Says:

Teams will start doubling Julio when he starts making acrobatic, one-handed grabs like he used to.

Oh wait, no they won’t be doubling him, and no, he won’t be doing acrobatic catches, because he no longer needs to. Brady’s pinpoint accuracy (mostly) makes Matt Ryan and his throws look like an amateur, and it’s only now we get to see the difference of Ryan vs. Brady.

Still, if JJ is really healthy, he will go off, and soon. It’s possible JJ will get this team back on track until ME gets healthy.

  37. D-Rok Says:

    At least I hope.

  38. Jerseybuc Says:

Been saying this. I would be all over payton! Give the saints there money or picks they want you get Payton here your guaranteed another year with Brady. We be sitting at 9 wins right now with Payton or any competent head coach

  39. Tony1775 Says:

Hey Todd, you managed to take most talented Bucs team and make them soft like you. You have never made it as a head coach. You are good as Defensive Coordinator…… Stick to that. Tom F’n Brady is your QB and you scared to throw INT. You obviously have no marbles down low or up high, please resign.

  40. HC Grover Says:

If they win the division at 7-10 or 8-9 we will never get rid of the Coaching Clown Show. Any good players who can flee, will. Then we have another year of the dynamic duo to look forward too.

  41. captivajim Says:

Grover is right .. IF we’re in playoffs;;there will be NO changes–other than the players who can will leave

  42. adam from ny Says:

    we are scoring no points…

imagine if trask was in there…

we’d be at 9 points per game

  43. Saul Says:

You’re an Idiot Joe. Who’s going to double team anybody on this offense?? The man makes a catch and amazing doesn’t get hurt and you want to send him to the Pro bowl ??? The BUCS keep trying to run the ball on first down then put the pressure on Brady to save the team. Notice that when they pass the ball on first down they get a first down 75% if the time?? Ever heard of passing the ball opens the running game?? How are you going to be effective on offense if the defense knows what you’re going to do? If you don’t have the balls to coach in this league, then you’ll be looking for another job. No balls no glory. You got the best quarterback in history and you trying to run the ball, that makes no sense!!

  44. David Says:

LoL. WHY!?!? Him and BL barely allow the O to pass it more than 2 yards down field until it’s absolutely necessary and time is running out. Of course that’s when they aren’t busy trying to be a 1974 power running team
BL should be fired this week and Bowles needs to be reevaluated well before immediately after the season

  45. Craig Says:

Merriam-Webster made gaslighting the word of the year. At least Bowles keeps up with that kind of news.

That means he is consciously trying to drive this team into the basement.
