“Totally Unacceptable”

November 8th, 2022
Offensive line drills.

Former NFL lineman reacts.

Team Glazer likes to say it learned from their late father that to understand a subject, lean on a guy who has traveled that road.

Joe is the same way. So when Joe hears former NFL players talk football, Joe pays attention. And if that guy happens to be a smart dude (you know, like an Ivy League degree) and discusses a position he played? Joe is paying full attention.

So Joe is guessing by his Twittering Sunday night that former NFL offensive lineman and teammate of Good Morning Football host Kyle Brandt, the man behind perhaps the best series of football podcasts out there, Ross Tucker, that he is no fan of the Bucs’ offensive line as a group.

(How could anyone not be a fan of, say, Tristan Wirfs, unless you are a slimy Saints fan (and your brain has been soaked with too many hurricanes for too long and you are also developing PTSD from inhaling the fumes of mule dung in the Quarter)?

Tucker, while watching the Rams-Bucs game Sunday, Twittered and scolded the Bucs offensive line.

Joe is giving the Bucs a break here. Aaron Donald is a Hall of Fame player. You expect exceptional plays. You know, like slide-protecting and the guy still beats you.

But a fundamental Bucs flaw may be at play here that comes from coordinating an offense and molding it from a group of 11 into a single unit. A team. Think about it: The Bucs have had far, far worse offensive lines (no, Joe is not calling the current group “bad.”) and still the Bucs found a way to be more productive.

Hell, when is the last time Pete Carroll had a strong offensive line in Seattle? He never had a rushing attack as worthless as the Bucs currently have.

BRING BACK ROJO. MOVE K. VAUGHN TO PRACTICE SQUAD, HAVE A TALK WITH FOURNETTE ABOUT BEING UNSELFISH OR HE’S GOTTA WALK THE PLANK.

And then we’ll have a running game, hopefully.

  2. Tampabaybucfan Says:

When you run on 2nd and short and get stuffed every time….

That’s the best time to give your QB an opportunity to throw downfield…..

If you miss…you’ve still got 3rd and short……(so far a monumental task for Bucs)

  3. Randall Says:

Can’t run if your OL massively sucks. End of story.

    They don’t. smh

When the camera goes to Bymoron, I see a spoiled canteloupe in the trunk of a car in south Florida in July.

Derrick Sharp … stick in the eye !

  7. SteveK Says:

Agree w you, Joe, much like Reggie White or prime JJ Watt, Mr. Aaron Donald is going to eat and get his. He’s an absolute terror and a generational talent. No knock in giving up a sack to that menacing game wrecker.

  8. Caleb Says:

It’s amazing that this team was starting Luke when Leverett was available on the bench. O line isn’t a problem for the team anymore. It’s mostly scheme and play sequencing which is on the coaching.

  9. Buccos Says:

The line is getting better with Leverett at guard. He is pretty good in my opinion. And he’s got man strength. Goedeke needs a year or 2 in the weight room. I’m not worried. We are in 1st place.

  10. gotbbucs Says:

What I’m seeing is not power run blocking. I see guys come off the ball, make contact, and then the feet stop moving and they are content to just hold in place. There were plays were Leverett and Hainsey were the only ones still driving. Smith, Mason, and Wirfs were standing around as the pile was still in motion. It’s an offensive line that looks like they know what the result is going to be before the play is run. How much confidence does anyone have going into a no win situation? They don’t have confidence in the play calls, and it shows.

One thing I cannot stand and it would drive me nuts as an offensive lineman is the constant motioning of recievers into the box and then trying to run inside from that formation.
Keep the recievers out wide or motion them all the way across rather than dragging another defender into the box. We have zero threat of a jet sweep so quit motioning like we’re going to run one.
We have two run game coordinators, an offensive coordinator and the dumbest run game scheme in the league with a dunderhead trying to call the plays.

  11. Darin Says:

If the defense knows what’s coming it ain’t gona work. That’s that. Let’s find an offensive coordinator who’s into disguise before we write off any players. This clown is historically bad with the best QB ever. And it still ain’t enough to get fired. Unreal

  12. D-Rok Says:

Lose the 21 dive and start trying 28 or 27 tosses, Leftnut. Heck even an RPO game with Brady might be more effective, and I say that affectionately since at 55, I can run faster than Brady even with bad arthritis.

All in fun and jest, Prost!! Hefeweizen’s down the hatch in preparation for Sunday! It’s called liver conditioning, or dealing with football PTSD, not sure which.

  13. Fern Says:

I want to see Tucker blocking that beast
    Best DT in the game

  14. Pewter Power Says:

Alex cappa was average and we did have a pro bowl left guard marpet. I refuse to believe that one guard spot is derailing the offense. We can’t run to the left or right and especially up the middle

Let’s not kid ourselves into thinking we had a run game last year either, we did have a few big runs from time to time though

  15. Bucsfan13 Says:

Maybe someone should press our so called OL run coordinator. Harold Goodwin is another guy who hasn’t been held accountable

  16. Your Mom Says:

The team still looks like everyone hates going to work there.

  17. Darin Says:

You’re right my mom! Something’s gotta change and soon. Bowles is rotting that thing from the inside out. With all kinds of talented players and the greatest QB ever. Not sure how it’s even possible but the staff is pulling it off

  18. 941bucsfan Says:

The oline sucks joe lol. Leverett is a 3rd string guard in this league, and one can argue Hainsley is a 3rd stringer also. I’m not a fan of donovan smith, but having those guys next to him surely doesnt help him at all

  19. Roc Says:

How about the Bucs using one of the new Big TEs has a fullback to lead Fournette bring back some old school

This may help open up a run lane

Or Run Vita behind Fournette up the middle on possible score drives

  20. D-Rok Says:

I will be honest, and I made a few comments before the game, that I feared Donald was gonna wreck our O-line by himself.

I consider it a huge victory that Donald didn’t do TOO much. He’s always gonna get a few good plays a game, but the fact that Brady is still walking, is a good sign.

Just trying to see a few positives and give some props when appropriate.

  21. Kentucky Buc Says:

TampaBaybucfan. I’ve been ranting about that all season.

  22. Jack Burton Mercer Says:

Fournette is a big part of the problem. If Jacksonville can figure that out, why can’t we?

  23. JimmyJack Says:

Jack B. Fournette has zero long runs this year. Safe to safe at this point in his career he is not capable of breaking tackles.

  24. Defense Rules Says:

gotbbucs … ‘They don’t have confidence in the play calls, and it shows.’

I think that’s probably the biggest part of the problem right there. When you’ve seen something fail time & time again, sooner or later it gets to you. This OLine might be at that spot.

Compared to Jensen, Hainsey is obviously 1 step down. Compared to Marpet, Leverett is also a step down (Goedeke, because he’s a rookie, would probably be 2 steps down). Shaq Mason MIGHT be better than Cappa, but I’m not seeing it yet. Wirfs is Wirfs; a beast. D Smith can be a beast at times, but he can also be a putty tat. unfortunately. It may also be though that he came back from injury too fast & his right arm isn’t working properly (leverage?). For whatever reason, this OLine still also hasn’t gelled like the 2020 & 2021 OLine did.

So, it’s up to the coaches to FIX IT. Thus far they’re not hacking it. When that happens in a military combat unit, almost always the leadership gets replaced. Lead, follow, or get the he11 out of the way.

  25. unbelievable Says:

Terrible playcalling + mediocre o-line + some incredible, but suddenly wildly inconsistent wide receivers = the 2022 Bucs offense, even with the GOAT at QB.

  26. LakelandSteve Says:

When the defensive line beats the offensive line off the ball when the offense knows the snap count there’s a huge problem. First our offensive line does not fire off the ball on run plays. Second, there is still several plays a game where the interior line is too high. Low man wins and it seems the low man is the opposing defensive line consistently. It would help to vary the snap count as it seems our team goes on one a lot. Maybe they don’t do it because they are afraid of too many false starts but other teams do it quite successfully. At least it would keep a defensive line honest when they don’t know the snap count on every play.

  27. Buc king Says:

I belive the scheme to run is bad and I think Lenny has looked flat for a few weeks now leading me to question either his health or desire.
I personal think they need to run more to the right n out side…
The gut punching isn’t work for 2 reason’s.
    1. No Jensen
    2. Running up the gut require holes to open up and the rb reading said holes.

This offense is to 1 dimensional due to play calling and not checking people feelings… Lenny needs to take less carries till he finds his grove back.
White has got hold on to the ball life his life is on the line.

Shaq wirf ko kief n possibly Orton or Godwin setting the edge.

  28. Craig Says:

I saw two times last week when it didn’t look like the line was just told to block.

A play should go all the way down to the line, not just the QB, receivers, and RBs.

Zone block, counters and treys are taught in PeeWee football, why not on the Bucs.

  29. Greg Says:

Please stop the ROJO talk! Are you kidding! He can run but lacks the intangibles to be a serviceable back. Stop that nonsense!

  30. Chris@Apple Roof Cleaning Tampa Says:

I am happy we are playing leverette vs Goedeke. I think we played Goedeke for so long as a favor to Jason Licht who drafted him so high.
IMHO, Goedeke needs a few years of Powerlifting before he becomes a starting NFL Guard.
Jason Licht kind of blew it when he picked Goedeke, because better players were to be had, IMHO.

The loss of both Jensen and Marpet can not be understated. Marpet was a Pro Bowl Guard, and Jensen was our enforcer, a fully trained Martial Artist who weighs over 300 lbs. I seriously doubt there is any defensive player in the entire NFL who could win a fight with Ryan Jensen.

  31. Bucamania Says:

It’ll all be better when they put Goedeke back in LOL
