Bruce Arians Raves About Kyle Trask’s Behind-The-Scenes Work
March 1st, 2022The Kyle Trask loyalists will love what Joe was told in the bowels of the NFL Scouting Combine today. (It’s more like a fancy hallway, but “bowels” sounds more interesting.)
So will the Bucs really go to training camp with second-year quarterback Kyle Trask, who was never active on gamedays last season, or losing journeyman Blaine Gabbert, who hasn’t started a game since 2018?
That’s what Bucco Bruce Arians was selling hard. And during his sales pitch, Arians shared some of his appreciation of Trask.
“It’ll be open competition because Kyle’s going to get a great, great shot. I mean, he’s earned his shot,” Arians said. “Like I said, I’m really am impressed with the way he improved the things he needed [to improve]. When he was running the scout team, presence in the pocket, movement in the pocket, all those little things on and off the field that Tom taught him. You know, leaning out and getting a little quicker. So yeah, I mean he can throw it. So it’s a matter of, does he turn it over? Or if it’s Blaine [Gabbert], does he turn it over? So we’ll get opportunity for all those guys, whoever’s there, in those preseason games. And that’s when I’d like to have four of them, four [preseason] games instead of three.”
Joe followed up with Arians and asked, “In the past you’ve said, ‘if you have two quarterbacks, you have none.’ Arians quickly said, “Whoever it is when it’s said and done, he’s the quarterback until he gets hurt.”
((Later this afternoon, Joe will have a some very big news on the Bucs’ quarterback situation.))

Glad to hear this about Trask… Although I am extremely curious about whatcha got in store for us later Joe. The suspense is killing me.

I hate UF and the name Trask for being so close to Trash, but I thought he looked like a solid pro prospect in the UF games I saw.
Who knows man
Go Bucs!

Come on Joe!!! Show what you have!!!

Can’t wait to hear from all the retired coaches and GMs that frequent JBF.

Hey color me optimistic but I’m not down on Trask as much as others. He did not embarrass himself in the SEC and I like what he did in the preseason last year – finishing strong. (Insert yea but..against beer truck drivers, Walmart assistant managers etc., I get it). He just spent a year learning at the feet of the master – so give him a chance. Dudes like Aaron Rodgers, Russ Wilson etc are most likely out of reach financially for the Bucs…There is Carson Wentz and maybe Captain Kirk…give the kid his shot. How many of you would have given Tom Terrific a shot after looking at his shirtless combine picture and watching his lumbering forty?

Rod Munchkin just threw up his baby formula.
March 1st, 2022 at 4:25 pm
It can’t be very big news on the QB situation. If it were, somebody else would have it already.
March 1st, 2022 at 4:31 pm
Jamoist is coming back. Otherwise, Joe wouldn’t be so excited.
March 1st, 2022 at 4:33 pm
So glad to hear them say this about Trask! I’ve been screaming from the mountain top that this is our best option. Sounds like they feel the same!
March 1st, 2022 at 4:37 pm
You know is the “news” is about Winson.
It’s not news anymore.
March 1st, 2022 at 4:37 pm
Arians “wouldn’t be totally against” Jameis returning.
March 1st, 2022 at 4:38 pm
We will find out that Rodgers & Wilson are off the market….

Trask would be the #1 QB in this years draft. The Jags could have even entertained moving down as someone would have wanted him early. So if he was #1, and teams are drafting QB’s, couldn’t we say that we have the best new QB this year and move on to more important things…like protecting him?
March 1st, 2022 at 4:56 pm
ARIANS: “So yeah, I mean he can throw it.”
Welp, there goes half the commentary by Joe and by Rod Munchkin. Time to come up with new BS, boys.

Good point. I would add that the Bucs did in fact entertain taking Trask with their 2021 first round pick. And, Trask should have gone higher than high-first-round-busts Justin Fields and Trey Lance, who got hyped because of their skin color and tattoos. And boy do they suck.

Yesterday BA was raving about Gabbert. Today BA raves about Trask. Tomorrow it’s Griffin’s turn.
The one thing I do (almost) believe at this point is when BA said ‘It’ll be open competition because Kyle’s going to get a great, great shot’. Love the idea of an open competition. Would’ve loved to have seen the word ‘fair’ in there before ‘competition’, but BA would never play favorites, so no worry there.
BTW, is it just me or does BA’s response make it sound like the Bucs really aren’t pursuing any big-name QBs?
March 1st, 2022 at 5:15 pm
@Defense Rules
I agree. It sounds like the chase for a big name QB is over. The Bucs need to see what they have before doing something stupid and detrimental to the organization. Spend the money on building a stronger supporting cast

We spent a high draft pick on Trask, with the idea he would someday replace Brady.
Well, that someday has come.
We need to play him, to see what we have.
March 1st, 2022 at 5:38 pm
Trash couldn’t have been given a better mentor to learn from. That’s a certainty.
Time will tell how good of a student he was/is.
March 1st, 2022 at 5:41 pm
Brace yourselves for the old Yuck Bucs. Perhaps not as bad but certainly 500 or a tad above maybe. We will win some games. But I do not see us going very far anytime soon. At least we got a superbowl in the modern era. We will get another one. But..it might take some time.
March 1st, 2022 at 6:39 pm
That’s great that he’s doing great running the SCOUT TEAM. Totally useless
March 1st, 2022 at 6:52 pm
LOL! Sure.
3-14, here we come!
Uh, no, Arians isn’t going to go out like that, and Trask, while he might be fine down the road, this is way too early to push him out. The guy is very much a developmental QB who is having to relearn how to throw the football with NFL velocity and was the #4 QB on the depth chart last year. Going from that to starter would be a disaster.
I know the Trask and Florida fanbois will throw a fit if you point out anything factual, but I’m not a Trask hater, and I very much believe throwing him out there now will ruin him as I do not think he’s close to being ready. Maybe next season he gets a look, maybe the year after, but certainly not this year when he didn’t play and barely practiced.
March 1st, 2022 at 7:22 pm
Munch, I agree that Trask should not be thrown in until he is ready. However, your suggestion that we wait possibly until year three of his four year contract to even give him a look is crazy. What if he’s great. We will have waisted nearly his whole rookie contract with him holding a clipboard and then have to give him a huge contract one year later. No, now is the time to find out if he’s the guy. He should go into preseason as QB1 giving him all the reps with the first string. It’s the only way we will know.
March 1st, 2022 at 9:03 pm
Sounds good to me.
Probably a lot of scout team superstars out there though.
Kinda like the driving range v. Augusta National.
March 1st, 2022 at 10:10 pm
BUCman … I don’t get the feeling that anyone is talking about putting Trask on the field if he’s not ready. Even BA talked about a QB COMPETITION. I think that pretty much implies that there’ll be 2 or more competitors, and 1 winner. This is the year though to find out IF Trask’s in the hunt or not. IF he is, he’d win the COMPETITION, would be our starting QB, and we’ll find out soon enough if he’s THE ONE. IF he isn’t, then at least we’ll know and can draft a viable QB in 2023 when the pickings are supposed to be better or we might sign a FA veteran QB who could see us through a few years until we can find a bonafide franchise QB. In any event, we’ll never know if we don’t let him run with the 1’s.

Niles. Congratulations on the stupidest comment on JBF. Keep getting your news from the fever swamps so everyone can laugh at you behind your back.

BUCman – If he’s great, then fantastic. Also, as I said, I’m not against starting him so long as you’re approaching this as a rebuilding year and not doing dumb stuff like resigning old guys and pushing cap hits to 2023 and beyond believing you have a chance to win the SB this year. If he turns out to be good, then fantastic, we got a QB of the future. But you should, as a team, only go full in if you think you have a legit shot at a SB, and no one can honestly say this team is winning a SB with Trask, if they are, then they’re nuts.
So if they want to go with Trask, hey, I’m OK with that, just don’t waste money on Jensen, maybe Gronk, maybe Suh, etc – just keep the young guys like Godwin and Cappa, and like I said, take your cap hits, as much as possible, this year and be ready for a big 2023. Nothing wrong with that, said it last offseason that the Bucs should go all in 2021, and I wouldn’t be mad if it meant the Bucs stink once Brady retires, and I’m sticking with that. If they don’t stink, if Trask is good, they go 7-10 or 8-9, they’re competitive in their games, then fantastic.
March 2nd, 2022 at 12:40 am
Defense Rules – The problem is competing with who? Gabbert? No thanks, I know Gabbert sucks, just let Trask play and see what happens at that point. If you bring in someone like Carr, who you know I don’t even like that much, but if you had Carr or Jimmy G or Wentz, you’re saying its their job and Trask sits and learns, which again, I think is best for him if he’s going to have a chance down the road.
March 2nd, 2022 at 9:40 pm
Trask will be the starter. He will defeat any qb’s except Aaron R. and Russell W. when given a chance.
