Winfield, Wirfs Get Rookie Honors

January 19th, 2021

All-Rookie.

The Bucs have a member of the All-Rookie team on each side of the ball.

To no Bucs fan’s surprise, safety Antonio Winfield and right tackle Tristan Wirfs were selected to the 2020 NFL All-Rookie team as voted on by the Pro Football Writers Association.

Winfield Jr. started all 16 regular season games and had 91 tackles, six passes defensed, four quarterback hits, three sacks, two forced fumbles, one fumble recovery and one pick. His three sacks was second among all NFL defensive backs.

Tristan Wirfs.

Wirfs gave up one sack all year and that was to a possible future Hall of Fame linebacker Khalil Mack with the Bears. Wirfs was a true wall on the right side, playing every snap of this season, including two playoff games (and counting).

That’s one sack allowed in 1,218 snaps through 18 straight starts. Joe likes that average.

I never thought I would say this good work Jason Licht. Congrats to both.

  2. Casual Observer Says:

Winfield’s list: And a partridge in a pear tree. He accomplished a lot. Not done yet. Two great picks.

  3. Bird Says:

    Kudos jason licht 2020 draft
I could see winfield becoming my favorite player.
He looks 5’9 and he flat out balls and mauls as the joes say.

    So 2 potential all pros
Vaughn will probably split touches/ carries next year
Tyler johnson will get more looks next year
And DT David got some playing time on rotation

  4. Bucamania Says:

    STUDS

  5. HomerSimpsonRocks Says:

Yeah. Licht can be seen in a new, er, light.

  6. Tampabaybucfan Says:

Many recent draft picks will be Bucs for years….

Wirfs, Winfield, White, Cappa, Rojo, Davis…..

    I’m hoping Godwin (resigned)…..SMB, Miller & others……

  7. unbelievable Says:

    Hell. Yes.

  8. 813bucboi Says:

    great job licht…

great job coaches for developing these players….

    GO BUCS!!!!

  9. buxszntkt Says:

antonio ????? how long have you been writing this blog Joe ?

  10. Ftmyersbuc Says:

The way it’s starting to look, i don’t think we need to pay godwin 18 million a year. Resign gronk for less, and resign AB and Lvd. Let tyler Johnson take that #3 wr spot with godwin gone. We need a veteran corner or more pass rushers far more than we need another 18million a year wr.

  11. 74 Bucs Fan Says:

    Lol Bux!

  12. OHBucFan Says:

2 for 2 on last years first two picks. And I really like Vaughn and Johnson. Take a bow, Mr. Licht

  13. Stinkbomb Says:

Great job. But show some respect and spell the name right……

  14. TampaTown Says:

Take it easy it was probably just autocorrect

  15. Adrnagy Says:

Jason licht will take them to chucke cheese , and give them a gold star sticker !

  16. Mort Says:

Where’s the idiot shouting “stale biscuit” and calling the GM “Gump” now eh? You sure look stupid when we have had an incredible draft and are in the championship game this weekend against a team we already beat once. By four TDs. Oh right, you hiding like a coward, doubling down on your inability to evaluate the team, pretending this run isn’t happening.

  17. ClodHopper Says:

I’m rewatching the game on NFL network. That strip he got on Jared Cook play. Almost feel sorry for Cook. He was crying like a baby on the sidelines.

Cam Jordan. Paging Cam Jordan: You’re food is solidified. Extra salty.

  18. David Says:

I’m watching the replay on NFL network as well. For all the accolades, let’s not forget it was a 23 to 20 game with 7 minutes left and the Saints driving before Devon White got that interception.

The Green Bay game was 10 -0 when A-Aron got flustered after that first int and missed some easy ones.
    There were some opportunities.
I’m not trying to be negative, just saying the defense needs to keep it up
AND the offense NEEDS to step it up.

Not sure why they did not use play action against the Saints when the run game was working.

    LFG!

  19. stpetebucsfan Says:

The future’s so bright we gotta wear shades.

Wonder how the guy who used that saying so frequently feels about the Bucs now?

  20. Waterboy Says:

The great wall of Wirfs!! Now whos complaining about Licht trading up one position to draft him?

  21. ModHairKen Says:

Licht’s best draft? Best year? Seems so.

The Minnesota rookies saved the game Sunday. The Tyler Johnson catch? Joe Buck was right. The Jared Cook fumble? Yeah, boy, that guy had been running his mouth all game and in an instant, he was crushed.

  22. ModHairKen Says:

Ftmyersbuc, please, no. Godwin is worth every penny. He needs to be a Buc for life.

Quality, quality guy. So many years with WRs who were prima Donna’s or just okay, and now we have a steal of a lifetime 3rd Round Penn State WR who is a great man, great teammate and tougher than steel?

Please do not let this guy go anywhere except to a local bank.

    PAY THE MAN!

  23. mg Says:

Mr. Licht should be G.M. of the year.

  24. Chesapeake Bucco Says:

Tristan Wirfs, Antoine Winfield Jr. Become Second Bucs All-Rookie Duo in Two Years….guess Jason Licht really sucks, huh?

  25. Tbbucs3 Says:

Jason Licht as GM has come with many flaws so let’s not act like he’s been good his entire time in Tampa because most NFL owners in a impatient league would’ve fired him years ago. It’s rare you see a GM stick around through 3 different HC’s.

But I’m glad the Glazers did keep him around because Licht has improved so much as a NFL GM and has learned from his (many) mistakes throughout his tenure.

Jason Licht in 2020 is a completely different GM than he was in 2014. Credit to him for adapting and making better decisions.

  26. DaBux Says:

Thank you Jason. I was wondering about Tyler Johnson but damned if he isn’t a future star also.

  27. adam from ny Says:

    amazing picks!…

i said next year we will win the superbowl (barring injuries)…

    but…

we can start to legitimately fancy the idea of back to back superbowls…

anything is possible now…even tho sunday is a very tall order

  28. JerseyBucsFan Says:

Remember when everyone was ripping Jason for moving up one spot. Doesn’t sound so dumb now huh lol

  29. Jmarkbuc Says:

“ ason Licht in 2020 is a completely different GM than he was in 2014. Credit to him for adapting and making better decisions.”

I wonder how much BA had an effect?

Licht wasn’t all that great up until the last couple years….

  30. Mitch Says:

I tend to think Licht’s relationship with BA must be majorly different than the previous head coaches. I think that relationship has really allowed him to excel.

  31. SOEbuc Says:

TBBF…You left out the BIG 50 on your list of long term picks. Always thought Licht was a great scout and finding good players in FA. Others didn’t see it that way.

  32. Buczilla Says:

It’s great to see some of our guys get the credit that they deserve. It’s a travesty that they have to go above and beyond what lesser players (Chase Young is one example) in the backward a$$ cities up North are required to accomplish.

  33. theodore Says:

In a couple months Licht is going to draft a kicker.

  34. orlbucfan Says:

Enjoy your crow, Licht haters. BTW, JL also shines with UDFAs. Cameron Brate, anyone?
