Mystique Versus Facts

Joe hears great praise from teammates and coaches about how quickly Tom Brady gets rid of the football. But why doesn’t that jibe with the official NextGen Stats data that measures the average amount of time elapsed — from the time of snap to the throw — on every QB pass attempt?

Seriously, Joe’s not being a wiseass. Why is that?

How could it possibly be that Brady had the 13th-quickest “Time To Throw” average measurement by NFL technology last year, 2.75 seconds, while Jameis Winston and Matt Ryan were right behind him at 2.77 seconds?

It’s not like Brady was doing a ton of scrambling.

Joe has heard Bucs offensive linemen talk about how quickly the football is coming out. Obviously, they’re not watching the release, so it’s a little perplexing.

Brady was 7th quickest in the NFL back in 2018, but ranked 24th the previous year.

In 2016, the first year the NFL tracked this stat, Bruce Arians’ beloved Arizona quarterback Carson Palmer took a lot of hits and was one of the quickest throwers in the league at 2.49 seconds of average “Time To Throw.” He completed just 61 percent of his passes that season with 26 touchdowns and 14 picks.

This is all very intriguing to Joe.

Regardless, it would be very helpful if the Bucs picked their pass blocking up a notch and/or establish an average ground game.

Supposedly Brady had no good WR to throw to last year, instead throwing to the second and third option making his release slower.

  2. Casual Observer Says:

Potential for misleading stats here. Over analysis. Hard to measure the real aspects of reading defenses quickly and making the right decisions.

  3. Sarasota Garey Says:

I think the most important stat this year will be turnovers. I wonder how many more wins we would have had last year if we only threw 10 to 15 ints, Instead of 30. I think at least 3 or 4 more wins. 1 out of every 4 drives for Tampa ended in turnovers, compared to Bradys worst being 1 out of every 10 drives.

I’ve heard this before and wondered if it was because of the lack of quality receivers and route running.

  5. Cannon Says:

    Joe,

Were those Next Gen stat’s from last year, or are they an aggregate of multiple years?
That’s noted in the story. –Joe

  6. Cannon Says:

I see it now, thank you. Needed my second cup.

  7. Anonymous Says:

I would be more interested in seeing how much time the offensive line gave thier QBs than release time. If you’re always being pressured and have to get it out fast vs. Having 3-4 seconds to watch the defense and pick them apart and how that relates to completion percentage.

  8. Mort Says:

Brady had trash piles to throw to last year and Julian Edelman. That’s really it. This year he has five studs that are all better than the crap he was used to last year.

    What Sarasota said…

  10. unbelievable Says:

Well “time to throw” and “release time” are different…

Brady’s release is still lightning fast- as are all the greats (Brees, Rodgers, etc).

  11. Brandon Says:

don’t confuse “time to throw” with release time. Time to throw is time spent with the ball in hands before ball leaves hand. Release time is the time the ball takes to leave the hand after throwing motion has started. Funny thing is, our OC, Leftwich may have had the slowest release time ever. 2.49 seconds? That sounded about right! 🤪

  12. Oneilbucs Says:

Jamies had trash to throw to his last 2 games of the season and plus his was hurt and no one gave him that excuse . Jamies didn’t have a running game the past 4 years and no one cared about that evey lost was his fault and Jamies kept us a top 5 offense despite of no running game and no blocking . And now we have Brady we draft a offensive tackle and we got 3 runningbacks added to the team . So I don’t want to hear nothing about what he had last year .

  13. bucsfan951 Says:

i didnt know this team was going 5-11 because they lacked an offensive tackle and 3 rbs smh

  14. pick6 Says:

i think the stat measures time from when the drop is finished. i kind of understand why that is but it’s weird that it’s used so definitively

Oneilbucs says “Jamies had trash to throw to his last 2 games of the season and plus his was hurt and no one gave him that excuse ”

There is no comparison between Brady and Jameis. This is why only the Saints wanted him – and as a third string QB.

  16. Oneilbucs Says:

Alabamabucfan So why Brady gets the pass and not Jamies that’s the question ? Maybe because he’s a black quarterback and Brady is white and Maybe that’s why Wentz gets a lot of passes because he’s white 🤔 !!

  17. Bellingham Bucs Fan Says:

Oneilbucs: I know, right? I mean, aside from race, Winston and Brady are basically the same guy. LOL
