Jameis, The Quarterbacks With 28-Or-More-Interceptions Seasons, And Why This Is Different

December 21st, 2019

Yes, Jameis Winston now has a whopping 28 interceptions in 15 games this season. America’s Quarterback is a generous man.

Only three times in the past 20 seasons have QBs hit the 27 picks mark.

It’s an intriguing pair.

Here they are:

Eli Manning, 27 picks in 2013
Brett Favre, 29 picks in 2005

Manning’s 2013 Giants team went 7-9 with the 28th-ranked offense in the NFL in both points scored and yards.

Favre’s ’05 Packers were 4-12 and ranked 22nd in scoring and 18th in yards.

But this year’s Bucs entered today’s game with no running game and ranked third in both yards and points. So there’s a reason why you might be telling yourself, ‘I’ve never seen anything like this Jameis freak show before.’

Breathe deeply, Bucs fans. And definitely wear your seat belt.

  1. Bucs 14 Says:

Winston is Jeff George 2.0 on the field. A gunslinger who is not phased at all by the INT numbers, and can throw a pass that looks like a work of art. Infuriating to watch. Enjoyable to watch. Lacks consistency.

  2. Dom>Licht Says:

I am now convinced that BL scripts Jamies first 3 picks just to get them out of the way!

  3. Buczilla Says:

One year deal for Jameis, bring in a vet with a pulse, and draft a rookie. I don’t think that Jameis will ever pull his head out of his a$$, but he deserves another year. If his agents really are asking for the moon, laugh in their face and let him walk.

  4. Jean Lafitte Says:

If Dumeg were alive I don’t think he would be as amused as you appear to be. I don’t think committing boatloads of turnovers is entertaining. Maybe for other teams and their fans or for an NFL network that feeds on drama. But for us fans we’re wondering what our future will look like with mister entertainment behind center. I can’t with any surefire expectation believe Jameis will be automatically better next season. This rollercoaster will never get us there. We are lucky to even be in this game.

  5. Sharthappens Says:

We would be up 30-3 with any other QB other than this clown.

    Mr Entertainment

Yes get Entertainment for the Texans

  15. QUE589 Says:

This is horrible. If they re-sign Winston I’m done. Nothing against him, he’s just not a franchise caliber QB. Bottom line.

  16. CPN Says:

    Winston keeps beating the Bucs.

  17. rrsrq Says:

A lot of that on Jameis, INTs and Missed throws,
But the drop by Brate still would’ve given us a chance
The non face mask call could’ve cost us 6 but we got three
    The bad non fumble call
It was a complete team loss which included ref support and JAMEIS

  18. cmurda Says:

Cam lost the game. JW was terrible but Cam’s drop lost the game. He may be a dependable dude but that was disgusting.

  19. Patrick Says:

Brett Favre did this thing called winning football games and taking his team to the playoffs. Don’t even compare Jameis to him.

  23. GoldBoy Says:

Joe had this queued up before the game was over!!! Deep in his heart Joe knows that he’s hitched his wagon to the Titanic. But he’s going down with the turnover machine. This offseason will prove if ownership wants to win at all. #NoPlayoffs

JW3 is not worth more than 15 mil, let him shop FA and see what his offers are – I expect they will be few.

  25. TDTB Says:

Finally played a decent team. Winston’s bargaining power was significantly reduced today.

  26. rrsrq Says:

This is probably the best thing for the Bucs, now Jameis really has no leverage. If he wins this came without ME and CG, he and his agent would try to get that bigger contract. Now, no way, Bucs in the drivers seat

  27. Sport Says:

The fools part of Fools Gold reared it’s head today. Defense did it’s job. JW did not.

  30. Jeagan1999 Says:

How many games is Winston going to cost us, before someone with half a brain at 1 Buc Place pulls their head out of their *ss and realizes that the new definition of insanity is …. INT’s and Pick 6’s DON’T WIN BALL GAMES!

Bring in a veteran QB on a 2 year deal….draft a rookie to learn from said veteran….MOVE ON!

  31. Rob Says:

Telegraphed a few more picks today as usual. Idiot with ability to make some throws but will always turn the bell over more than any starting quarterback in the NFL. Cannot win consistently with America’s turnover machine as your quarterback. Let the pos walk and frustrate some other fan base. I’ll take my chances in the draft and draft someone with half a brain

  32. cmurda Says:

Fair statement Ndog but honestly the fact remains: We were in prime position to take the lead and Cam dropped the easiest pass of his career. I guess we all make mistakes but that cost us the game.

  33. mark2001 Says:

When the game is on the line…back up QB’s occasionally throw a TD, and usually a pick.

  34. Red86 Says:

Despite the turnovers, if Brate catches the 4 & 1 pass, then there a possibility to win or tie the game. The defense was the best I seen in a while.

  35. Rosadog01 Says:

It’s significant, as it shows that the stats don’t mean much!

  39. orlbucfan Says:

Get a new pic of Jameis, Joes. He looks like a video idiot.

  40. cmurda Says:

The pressure is going to be on Licht to work out a long term deal with Shaq Barrett. JPP would likely follow suit and I would think we would want him back. But, I can’t imagine taking the chance of signing JW for more than a year. We’re going to have to tag JW

  41. Adrnagy Says:

Sloppy game for offense. Great for defense. But after all the mistakes we had acouple opportunities to go ahead.

  42. Dirkdiggler Says:

  43. cmurda Says:

@mark2001. I know man. I’m just so frustrated by it. Look, the defense was great. I’m not complaining about them at all but the facts are the facts. We were in position to win this game nevertheless. I can’t look past that.

  46. geno711 Says:

If Jameis throws to the open OJ Howard instead of Dare on the 3rd down, we get an easy 1st down. So for those blaming Cam – Winston made the wrong choice later in the game with still plenty of time to tie or win the game.

  47. Dewey Selmon Says:

Jameis lost the game simple as that. The whole bar laughed me out the door knowing i’ll be back next week.

  48. Mike Johnson Says:

What did Leonard Skynard say? I can’t change. Jameis cannot and will not change people. And I’m telling you all with him, we will never reach a championship game..NEVER. But we will keep him and keep marching into the annuals of mediocrity forever and a day. Its time to move on. Jameis is going to be a great backup in his career. Even win some games for an injured starter. But we ain’t goin nowhere with him but to the couch..to watch other teams in the playoffs.
Now you younsters know what us ole heads mean when we proudly yell, Its a BucLife baby…..

  49. Adrnagy Says:

  50. Jeagan1999 Says:

Quit with the “Brate dropped the pass and cost us the game!” crap! Winston turned the ball over 4 times and directly gave the Texans 10 points!

We lost by 3 points …our QB cost us 10 points! So who really lost us this game?

  54. SteveK Says:

It’s really friggin sad that Jameis makes so many mistakes. Look at the other players. They make one mistake and are crucified. Jameis threw 4 picks today, easily could’ve been 5. Missed wide ass open receivers.

  55. Bucy Says:

Wish I could say this was unbelievable. With game on line down 3 he throws the easy pic, never going to play offs with this qb he has not progressed in 5 years does not learn thank god licht who is the antichrist of winning football resigned him.

  56. Deez days Says:

    Lmao jameis sucks

  57. JimmyJack Says:

What is this article about? Jameis just threw the game away. We are losing too many games with Winston being a huge reason why. That’s a large problem in the NFL.

Winston still is not good enough.

  59. Pa bucs fan Says:

Resign him. It’s a no brainer. Call it what u want he had a few bad passes to no name recievers with no chemistry with and a broke hand.

The deffence played well it’s a pleasant and needed suprise. It will only get better.

The fake fans finally showed up from thier parents basements after4+ weeks to ridicule Jameis. Salty much lol

  60. Tval Says:

He’s gonna get PAID!!! How do you piggyback this team, with no oline/run game every week, and now down 2 starting wideouts.
Only FOOLS will blame this game on Jameis. Out yourselves now and Dolphins gear in a week?? Lol!

  61. Rosadog01 Says:

    Should have been 6 picks!

  62. Patrick in SC Says:

Guy was throwing to people that have been on the team for a week and now they’re starting against a playoff bound team. I’ll forgive him for having communication issues with them and throws not being on a dime to them. For as banged up as the team was, it was actually a really great game. They continued fighting throughout. Other Bucs teams we’ve seen in years past would have most certainly mailed it in before even taking the field

  63. Bucco Edd Says:

The priority needs to be keeping this defensive together, low ball Jameis. No other team will outbid us.

  64. JimmyJack Says:

Adrnargy…….That’s how it works. The QB threw the game away. He could have won it. He screwed up. He isn’t good enough. Leading a winning drive there is a totally different story. Duh.

  65. geno711 Says:

For those blaming Brate on the 4th and 1 – which deserves blame. Jameis still could have thrown an interception on the very next play. Because the ball was still in his hands. For those acting like if Brate had just made the 4th and 1 play the game was the Bucs to be had is just silly.

By the way, all three of those sacks in the second half were Jameis holding the ball too long.

  66. ElBajito43 Says:

    Honesty is the best policy

    ^^^^^^
So true he literally threw 3 more balls that defenders dropped

  67. gotbbucs Says:

I’d have a much easier time stomaching the growing pains of a new QB next year than watching this guy piss away games weekly. I have never seen a QB throw Int’s early in games like this guy. He never even gives the team a chance.
I want to see someone from the defensive side of the ball come unglued on Winston. All he had to do was not throw fking Int’s and this was an easy win. Every game this year. Don’t throw fking Int’s and they were all winnable games.
Stop throwing interceptions you moron. It isn’t that hard. Take the freaking check downs. Walk the ball up the field. Quit throwing out routes across the field. Work the middle of the damn field. Run the football.

  68. Ndog Says:

I simply tell the truth. I blame who should be blamed.

  69. cmurda Says:

JW lost years on a contract and millions or at a minimum gave the Bucs the edge in negotiations. That was that bad of a game from him. Disgustingly bad. Some of you arguing that Brate’s dropped pass shouldn’t be blamed are insane. It’s both. JW should be kicked in the nuts right now but Brate should be crapped on too. Neither is acceptable. A toddler makes that Brate catch. Come on.

  70. Pa bucs fan Says:

    Adrnagy

No they wouldnt. They would be saying Houston is a crap team and its thebonly reason we won.

This is the only message board I visit that seems to have wome of the worst fans I’ve ever seen. It’s almost comical and definitely pathetic.

  71. Pelsbuc61 Says:

Trade either Brate or O.J. in the off-season. Franchise JW but please draft a QB.

  72. Dirkdiggler Says:

Joe sucks fan – still ran by and for idiot buc fans.

  73. Bucsfan1988 Says:

Y’all bloggers are quite a piece of work.

Was a VERY competitive game. Jameis without 3 of his top 4 WR’s! And 2 of them are in the top 5 in the league. He has a piss poor running game, and Joe’s pulled in off the street to cover the gaps.

And to top this off, you had the worst most despicable officiating I’ve ever seen in the first 1/2 of the game.

Bottom line folks, despite Jameis’s mistakes, the D stepped up and Jameis had the Bucs there to tie the game. Brate drops a perfect throw to continue the drive.

Yeah, Jameis hAd mistakes, but c’mon people, we knew he was going to have to be aggressive today throwing to milk carton WR’s….I expected picks from him. It was a bit more than I hoped but he had there at the end people to tie up the game.

    It’s a TEAM loss.

Still say bring Jameis back. He will improve in this offense next year.

    I’m out!

  74. TheBucsAnthem Says:

I simply just don’t understand all you stupid bucs fans who thought Jameis was awesome racking up stats against BAD TEAMS………

    dumb

    dumb

    dumb

Jameis will always be a bonehead QB that will never give his team a chance to win………PERIOD

  75. BucInCLE Says:

Absolutely no excuse for his performance today. Looked like he was playing without 2 pro bowl receivers and a broken thumb on a short week…oh wait.

The second pick was bad. He turns the ball over. Get over it. He’s going to be back because he does amazing things on the field. The last pick, Ogunbawale drifted back 3-4 out of his break. Jameis definitely has blame in this loss, but damn, we lost the Seattle game where he played perfect. If you can’t see that this team is getting better, I feel sorry for you.

His 2 starting TEs let him down today multiple times. He threw some inexcusable balls, but man, he’s entertaining to watch. Go root for another team if you don’t like it, because he’s here to stay. You’re just making yourself miserable by continuing to be a fan of a team whose players you don’t like.

  76. Couch Fan Says:

1 drop did not cost us the game. How you can blame a drop and not the 4 Ints(including a pick 6) is insane.

  77. Wesley Says:

Move on for the love of god move on.

  78. scot pederson Says:

Lets face it. He got exposed today once again. When playing teams with terrible defenses like the 4 game winning streak he looks deadly at times but today vs a Playoff bound team he gets exposed and becomes a TO Machine again and not near 400 yards.

When he makes big plays the Announcers Fawn all over him, but when he overthrows guys or a Pick they say ‘maybe his thumb is starting to hurt’. Why all the excuses made for this guy. He is what he is.

How many fans want to go to the Playoffs vs how many fans want to see a lot of yards and big plays mixed in with a lot of Pick 6 plays and other interceptions that kill us?

  79. lambchop Says:

    Cmurda,

What cost us the game was spotting the other team 10 points (could have been 14 if not for the D) and killing drives with 3 other INTs. Yes, let’s overlook 5 INTs and blame the drop for the loss. You think if Cam caught that pass that Winston couldn’t have thrown another pick? I don’t have that kind of confidence to think Cam’s drop cost us the game with ATM behind center.

Jameis sucks. If your QB only looks gang busters against weak opponents, well you have an avg QB.

  80. Bucsfan1988 Says:

Great rant BucINCLE !! Totally agree.
We are definitely a better team overall, and Very Fun to watch!

  81. Bob in Valrico Says:

Jameis could really use a Darth Vader shield to mask where he is looking. That said , its also possible that the thumb didn’t allow Jameis to put the right zip on the out passes. Jameis is an enigma ,that the Bucs have still have to figure out.
But staring down receivers is unacceptable at this point. Six oick sixes in a season is a major concern also.

  82. Buccaneerscotty Says:

Joe sucks fan I love it good one😁

  83. Please Says:

If Brate’s drop singlehandedly lost this game, VHG III’s tackle is what singlehandedly won it for Houston.

Or maybe just 4 interceptions nearly ALWAYS singlehandedly loses games.

  84. SteveK Says:

What about all the dropped INTs, Couch Fan? If the apologists forgive Jameis Receivers’ drops then surely then can see the drops by defenders too.

What I can’t believe is how people are so quick to blame Cameron Brate for that drop but won’t have the balls to put the blame on Winston for throwing 4 picks in a single game. He telegraphs his throws and even a blind disabled cornerback could intercept his passes. The bucs are loaded with up and coming talent but they can’t perform miracles when their leader the QB keeps giving away the ball to the other teams. People who try to compare Winston to Farve are out of their fuqin MINDS. Farve wins games while Winston gives them away. Farve is a hall of fame QB and Winston will be nothing more than a starting QB that should have always been a back up, and after thought which no bucs fan will remember a decade from now once we find a QB that knows how to win games.

See, Jameis Apologists love to blame EVERYTHING AND EVERYONE EXCEPT Jameis Winston.

See, Jameis Apologists whom I think are somehow paid by someone linked or related to Jameis camp to come on this site and say complete nonsense.

  107. TheBucsAnthem Says:

Texans secondary actually shouldve had six interceptions

  108. Red86 Says:

Blaming Brate drop isn’t completely ignoring Jameis picks. The game was competitive with Jameis TDs. While trying to win the game, an on target pass that was drop could have lead to a win in which the picks wouldn’t matter. That’s the point that’s being made.

  109. unbelievable Says:

The Brate drop was the back breaker.

But without the Jameis interceptions, the game is never that close.

Hats off to the defense. They played lights out today.

Offense lost the game for us (several times over). Houston barely contributed to their own win.

Officiating was also some of the worst I’ve ever seen. The NFL sucks.

  110. TheBucsAnthem Says:

hats off to the defense too

  111. BucInCLE Says:

SteveK, “fun to watch” is an improvement over a game I watched in ‘09 vs the Giants where we didn’t have a first down until the 3rd quarter.

“Fun to watch” =/= this is ok. What it means is that we’re finally able to go into a game against a playoff team and expect to be in it in the 4th quarter.

“Fun to watch” is an IMPROVEMENT over what we were last season. A loser mentality would be not being able to see the improvement this team is making.

I’m not an apologist by any stretch of the imagination, Jameis throw his picks. But if you’re going to criticize that, we need to criticize everything. His run game has been terrible. Coming into the season, his deep ball was the big knock on him. It’s looking really nice now. He’s shown the ability to improve. If you want a 30 TD 8INT guy, Jameis isn’t it. He’s going to turn the ball over. But this team is improving. They need to get better upfront and re evaluate the RB position. I was happy that after the early turnovers and getting screwed by the refs early, we didn’t back down. We were resilient. Games like these are what these players will look back on when we’re in the playoffs and the game is tied coming out of the half.

  112. ElBajito43 Says:

Refs missed all Bucs calls and found Texans calls from the “Trash” Licht

Overtime show sucks with MIKE CLAYTON such and IDIOT

  113. lambchop Says:

Jameis got picked twice on the out to the left. He shouldn’t be making that throw because he’s been getting taken to the house on that exact throw multiple times. He’s giving away a tell that the D has picked up on; mostly it’s him staring down receivers. An out should create separation from the DB as they have to react. But, these pick 6s are where the DB just sits down and under cuts the throw. He’s giving a tell.

I don’t need excitement, I just want wins and an average QB who doesn’t take 1 step forward and two steps back. You know, someone who can actually play consistently and not kill drives.

  114. Jameishas2go Says:

Headline, “Jameis, The Quarterbacks With 28-Or-More-Interceptions Seasons, And Why This Is Different”

Losing teams turn the ball over. Period. It is not different. It is the same. This narrative Joe is trying to sell is not working. Just because our offense is better than those other offensives is because we have better skill position players than those teams. Except at one position.

This is a losing battle Joe.

  115. lambchop Says:

    Red86,

Without the pick 6 and the swing in points with the other INTs, the Brate drop is less important. That’s the point being made. Brate has to play perfect but we have to make excuses for the QB?

Did Brate drop 4 passes today?

  116. Couch Fan Says:

I don’t need excitement, I just want wins and an average QB who doesn’t take 1 step forward and two steps back.
    ————–
Completely agree. No point in being excited just to watch them lose. It blows my mind that excitement is better than actually winning to some people. Ill take boring QB play with wins any and every day.

I know this.. SO tired of the turnovers

  119. Ndog Says:

What made today difficult is that they were jumping routes all game like they knew what was coming. The first and last one were so transparent it’s not even funny. We ran that last play with Dare already today and each of the last two weeks. They guessed it was coming and frankly so did I. I told my wife as soon as he went in motion out of the backfield the out was coming and sure enough there it is. So if I knew it was coming the defense certainly knew it was coming but that also means the QB should have been ready for them to know as well. You can’t just blindly throw that ball at that moment expecting it to be open, you just can’t.

The defense was great, without the pock 6 they only allowed 16 pts. Jameis and Brate the 40 million dollar man lost this one.

  121. Red86 Says:

I said, “(Blaming Brate drop isn’t completely ignoring Jameis picks.) The game was competitive with Jameis TDs. While trying to win the game, an on target pass that was drop could have lead to a win in which the picks wouldn’t matter. That’s the point that’s being made.” That’s is when there was at least 5mins left in the 4th. I didn’t say Jameis didn’t have a bad game. I’m talking about the game was competitive. The win was still available til the 4th down drop. 23 to 20 with momentum in Texans territory. That’s all I’m saying. The team nearly still won the game despite those turnovers.

Honest, good faith question to fans—what quarterback in the NFL would you like? This “non entertaining, can sustain drives, doesn’t lose the game” quarterback. Who is your model of that?

  123. Formaly Tampa 2 Says:

Jameis is today just what he has been for the last 5 years. And if he is re-signed he will be the same way for whatever years he is signed for. The glazer boys have never made a good decision since Dad died, so expect them to make a sorry decision and keep Jameis. And the bucs will “never” go to the Big Game with Jameis as QB. Just too many mistakes. However, ya gotta be proud of the rookies in secondary. They are better every game. Merry Christmas All!

  124. Slugglife Says:

Winning is apparently overrated. All we need is entertainment.

A TE lost the game today? Ok. Cool story bro. Add that to the list of excuses you make as you cheer for this bloated undeserved contract you want to see your “franchise QB” sign.
Then you can laugh as the rest of the fans are pissed off about it. Meanwhile another 5 years of meaningless November and December football where you endless quote statistics. JW may not be going anywhere. Neither will this team.

Any QB can throw passes to the other team.

I think.it’d be fair to say that fans are ready to take a look at anybody else after this failed 5 year experiment.

Hell, I’d love to see our backup QB play next week. You know, the guy who would have to come in and play for this team should Winston get injured.

Hard to say JW gives you the best chance to win when he’s thrown 28 picks this year.

  126. BucInCLE Says:

    Slugglife,

I’ll be upfront with you and say that I disagree with that. For years we’ve been saying that if the defense was shored up, we’d start winning games. They got their act together and all of a sudden we’re 4-1 in the last 5.

The one loss came without CG and ME13 and a QB with a broken thumb. He’s going to throw picks, but he’s fixed his deep ball. I want to win. Jameis definitely did not play his best ball today. Bad Jameis showed up today. And yet, we were in it in the 4th quarter vs a playoff team. That’s progress.

What I want to know is what NFL QB is the prototype “non entertaining, game manager” that you’d take if you could? There isn’t one. Those guys don’t sustain success in the NFL. I just think once fans realize Jameis plays his own brand of backyard football and he manages to win more than he looses when paired with a decent defense. Sure, he might cost us a game, but 4-1 don’t lie. It’s not like we got exposed today…we were in it till the Brate drop. But I respect your opinion.
