Report: Bucs Have Decided

December 21st, 2019

Good news.

It seems from a report published this morning by Ian Rapoport of NFL Network that the Bucs have already made a call on Decision Jameis.

The Bucs have decided, per Rapoport’s source, that Mr. Entertainment, America’s Quarterback, Pro Bowler Jameis Winston, is and will be your Bucs starting quarterback for the foreseeable future.

Unknown, however, is how the Bucs will keep him. Will he be franchised? Will he be signed to a short contract? Will Jameis be signed to a long-term pact?

Either way, Jameis will be back in 2020. And Bucs fans as a whole can rest comfortably at night.

The franchise has been saved!

We all kinda knew this was coming, it’s the length and terms that will be interesting. And know that this info is out Jameis will have his meltdown game.

Hey Joe’s. Do you think the glazers will demand a clause in the context that if Winston gets in trouble off the field again he forfeits all guaranteed money? And if so would he sign such a deal?

  5. TexBuc Says:

contracts always have a conduct clause

  6. Cobraboy Says:

    No surprise here.

While frustrating and certainly the prime loser in numerous games, Winston has not been “the” losing problem since he became a Buc.

And he seems to be trending up.

I just hope whatever deal made allows the team to keep the core DL together. The D needs $$$ attention because for years the O got the money.

  7. TheBucsAnthem Says:

    JW = CAREER FRAUD FRANCHISE QB THAT’S REALLY A BACKUP 2ND STRINGER……..

    – JW is nothing more than a really good backup.

    – JW doesn’t make anyone better.

    – JW high, inaccurate throws, and stupid decision making will never propel his team forward….only backwards.

    – JW will always keep Tampa Bay a loser.

  8. TheBucsAnthem Says:

This franchise will only be cursed with losing as long as JW is at the helm

JW = GMC (career softie loser)

  9. DBS Says:

Same carp you said 5 years ago. Saved from what? More losing? Just like 5 years ago you like the rest of us has no idea if it is or not. “But all we need is”.

    “The franchise has been saved!”

    Really Joe??????

………..don’t you mean the Franchise continues to be doomed???

What you gonna be writing next year when JW is still playing the same way while being the turnover machine he is?????

I mean, how stupid can this Franchise and the Glazers be by keeping JW????????

  11. Ocala Says:

    This was an easy decision

I’m hopeful the Bucs sign Jamies to a long term contract.

  12. Bucs1 Says:

@TheBucsAnthem Right so undrafted players like Brate and Humphries don’t look better with Winston. How about Dye, Martino, Huff, Wilson, Shorts, Wilson, Perriman and even Godwin?

Winston doesn’t need the star receivers. They obviously help but why not go back and analyze his 2016 season. Why has Humphries’ production been cut in half now that he’s on the Titans?

  13. adam from ny Says:

this year will be his all time high in interceptions…

and just wait till he has his career year in the next few and throws for about 40 td’s and only about 10-12 ints

Franchise tag him, don’t be foolish. It was only 3 or 4 weeks ago he looked like crap and most people wanted him gone. Realistically he’s looked good against some crappy teams these last few weeks.

  17. TexBuc Says:

Today all the ones who dislike Winston will be out in force today looking and waiting to examine any mistake to make their case against Winston. They will be screaming but no one who matters will be listening.

  18. Bucsfanman Says:

    Hyperbole at it’s finest!
It’s just a smart business decision. I don’t think it’s going to be the long-term contract that some think though.
On NFL Network they mention the Franchise Tag.

  19. Boltsfan17 Says:

Not an easy decision. A lazy decision. Just extending the inevitable.

  20. adam from ny Says:

    5 years 125 mil…

everyone should be happy with that, including jameis….

heck, bumgarner just signed for 5 years 85 mil with the d-backs

  21. 813bucboi Says:

it was obvious….he’s been playing stress and care free…..

BA must have told him after the saints game, relax kid, your my QB for the long haul….

    i guessing 4years 100mil, 50mil guaranteed….with incentives it could bring the contract to 120mil over 4years…..

great deal for a QB thats never won 10games, been to the playoffs and lead the league in INTs in a contract year….

    GO BUCS!!!!!

  22. Jim Says:

The Bucs are a very entertaining team and I’m looking forward to next year and more entertaining football. It’s Soap Opera Football and that’s fine. Key questions: How much? How long? Will they draft a QB?

  23. First Down Tampa Bay Says:

TheBucsAnthem: “JW will always keep Tampa Bay a loser”

Maybe you haven’t kept up with the franchise with the last 40+ years, but they havent exactly been winners for much of those years. Jameis is undoubtedly the best QB the franchise has ever had, and possibly the most interesting player in franchise history as far as the national media goes. EVERYONE is talking about the Bucs, solely because of Jameis Winston. Brad Johnson didn’t do that, Byron Leftwich never did that, Chris Simms never did that, Jeft Garcia never did that, Josh Freeman didn’t do that, Mike Glennon never did that, Josh McCown didn’t do that, Ryan Griffin doesn’t do that, but guess what: Jameis Winston DOES do that! The Bucs are put in the national media SOLELY because of Jameis, and we complain about this? Jameis is quite possibly the most iconic player in franchise history, and has the potential to be the greatest!

But yeah, let’s sign Teddy Bridgewater because HE will make us WINNERS!

  24. mark2001 Says:

If he plays well the next two games, I’ll say, no problem.

If not, I’ll say same old Bucs.

  25. bucsince79 aka bumaneer Says:

#3 has much better foot work and confidence!! Sign him…

  26. Bigbucfan90 Says:

Man I hope Jameis lights it up today and gets a win so I can come back on here and see the same people who are calling him trash change there tone! I know we aren’t in a playoff race but at this point you just want to see Jameis turn the corner. The draft never really matters you can draft a stud in collage and he turns out to be a complete bum in the pros. I just want us to win

  27. Dewey Selmon Says:

Can one of you stat geniuses spilt his seasons in half first 8 games vs last 8 games? for his whole career. I think the numbers will be very interesting.

  28. SteelStudBuc Says:

I just hope if they do re-sign him that it’s a short incentive based deal…

Look at the money Brady gets, all the super bowl appearances
Now Jameis wants to get paid more than the greatest?!?!? Theres a lot of greed if reports are true… lead your team to wins and playoff appearances and maybe just maybe you should be paid near Brady. These salaries need to stop increasing so much…. especially for bums like Jameis who single handedly lost 4 games (and counting) this year.

  29. Tampa Bay Demon Says:

I have believed in Jameis from day 1, and very happy to see him performing at the level that he is. It is only going to get better.

  30. unbelievable Says:

File this report under: “yeah, no chit”

  31. Defense Rules Says:

@Joe … “Bucs fans as a whole can rest comfortably at night. The franchise has been saved!”

I’m all for franchise tagging Jameis Joe, but seriously, could we MAYBE make the playoffs at least once BEFORE we announce that we can ‘rest comfortably, the franchise has been saved’? You & many others have made excuse after excuse for losing season after losing season with Jameis at the helm (well, except for 2016’s glorious 9-7 ‘fluke’ of a season according to you).

What we HAVE determined is that Jameis is a very good QB PROVIDING that he has a good defense to clean up after his giveaways, a decent running game & a good OLine to protect him. Today we’ll see if he also NEEDS Top-5 receivers to go along with that.

Funny thing about winning TEAMs … they actually have more than ONE quality player on them. Heck, some even have more than TWO. If we aren’t able to afford quality players on BOTH sides of the ball, we ‘ain’t goin no-place’.

  32. Pwedge Says:

    ***BREAKING NEWS***

The Tampa Bay Area will see an increase in Jameis detractors. Please be vigilant, they will be irrational, unreasonably, but most importantly, extremely critical of anything JW does today. Consider them a harm to your IQ. They do not understand, just because you don’t throw many interceptions, doesn’t mean you’ll be a good QB, it WAY more than that, trust me!

    Sincerely,
    Marcus Mariota

  33. ATrain Says:

    So One Question for Joe

When will You call Jamies a failure??!

5 years of INT , poor decision making

And he has won a couple games against losing teams so keep him

    Good Call

  34. unbelievable Says:

    @TexBuc-

They do that every single week. Every game thread- just read the comments from Anthem, Bucnut, H8, that ElBajito idiot and whoever else. They are hoping and praying for a turnover on every offensive drive.

I can’t think of a more pathetic way to spend your weekend… but hey to each their own.

Today would have been a tough game even if we were full strength. Instead we’re missing 3 of our top 4 WRs, our best safety, and our top CB is playing injured.

Gonna be a very hard game. If the Bucs pull it out, I will all in on this coaching staff. Go Bucs!

  35. 813bucboi Says:

    lol…

i wont disagree with you….but i wouldnt be at harsh….lol….

imo, JW hasnt lived up to first #1 overall bill but his coaching has been suspect…..i can go on and on but why bother….dont want to sound like im making excuses for the kid….

JW is at the very least an NFL starter….some sundays he’s a quality starter….some sundays he’s a lousy starter….lol….

but i understand where you’re coming from…..lions got fooled by stafford….redskins tagged kirk twice as he fooled them by beating up on lousy teams…..

the thing that keeps me optimistic is our coaching staff…..TB has the defense playing well and hopefully with another defensive draft(trenches&FS) we should be a more consistent group….

offensively, draft trenches and a RB…..

having consistency is the key to success……

    GO BUCS!!!!!!

  36. BrianBucs Says:

I think this decision was actually made quite some time ago.

Bucs fans can look for years of mediocrity and half empty stadiums.

  37. Allbuccedup Says:

If JW keeps throwing 40 times a game he is going to throw ints. Its as simple as that. We are never going to beat good teams that thrive on turnovers.

  38. stpetebucsfan Says:

Viewed in business terms this was the only thing that made sense. However as plenty have pointed out it depends on the length of the contract and the guaranteed money.

It’s just risk versus reward…next year…given JW’s performance this year is not that big of a risk.

Improve the defense just 10%…cut JW’s turnovers by 1/3…and we have a winning team. Find a generational OL in the draft and another bona fide pass rusher and we have a good team that is playoff bound.

Give that team another year..another draft..some more depth and the team could actually be a SB contender.

Minimal risk for one year…maximum return.

As you add years however…which JW will emerge? The risk..given JW’s history both ON and OFF the field increases significantly with each year you guarantee.

This is Licht’s greatest challenge. Get JW in a deal with minimal risk and the least damage to the cap possible.

  39. Buc1987 Says:

  41. TexBuc Says:

In the Bucs short window of being winners the stadium was sold out and a waiting list for tickets. Winning solves everything!

  42. TexBuc Says:

You cannot have a big pass play unless you throw downfield and when you throw a lot we will get an INT. Keep firing away Jamies!

  43. bojim Says:

    Great!!

  44. buc53 Says:

Jesus man, is there really a fan on here talking about behavior clauses?? Jameis has been nothing but exemplary since being in this league. Anything and everything the guy was involved with happened before he even played one down as a Buc.

    C’MON.

  45. Dewey Selmon Says:

Bucs trade Winston, this years #1, our 2021 #3 and Brate to Cinn for this years #1 and get Joe Burrow.

  46. Craig Says:

    Well, there goes the neighborhood.

The Jameis lovers will be insufferable until the start of next season when Jameis leads us to another losing start of the season.

But wait, there is still hope. His head might have grown so large that he loses these last two games and still expects the moon. I have doubts that he would sign either the franchise or transition tags, so he might end up on another team because of sheer greed.

    —————————————————————————————–

Soooooooo……….lemmer get this straight….according to you; just because everyone is talking about “Jameis” in the “National Media” that he is now suddenly the most “iconic player in franchise history” according to you and what you wrote.

NEWSFLASH FOR YOU BUDDY……….they’re talking about Jameis FOR ALL THE WRONG REASONS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Good Franchise QBs don’t need polarization in the media or national sports media questioning him and his abilities as a franchise QB.

You say he’s the “best QB in franchise history” but yet here we are missing the playoffs again.

    JW is a coach killa

JW is the kinda player that you have “hopes for” and not the kind you “depend on” player.

Cmon man…………..what are you going to be saying in 2020 when he’s stinking it up again and being the turnover machine he truly is????? Are you still going to be saying this nonsense?????

This is what I mean by BUCS fans being so stupid^^^^^^^^^^^

For some reason, BUCS fans still think that Jameis will get better and morph into this great Franchise QB………AIN’T GONNA HAPPEN FOLKS!!!!!!!

Jameis is who he is by now / year 5.

And no…..I’m not calling you stupid……just your thoughts towards JW as stupid.

  49. Scot person Says:

A-no team in the Modern Era has ever been consistently in the playoffs or super bowl with 24 interceptions

It’s plain to see that the glazers and Licht
    R happy with mediocrity.

Having big games vs losing teams with 3rd string
QBs like Detroit or bad teams like the colts means
    Nothing.

The Bucs beat Indy 38-35 yet the saints last long week
Beat the Indy 34-7!bcuz brees is not a turnover machine.

Great teams do not accept continued mistakes

  50. DoooshLaRue Says:

They do that every single week. Every game thread- just read the comments from Anthem, Bucnut, H8, that ElBajito idiot and whoever else. They are hoping and praying for a turnover on every offensive drive.

No, it’s more like we just expect the turnovers and we’re seldom wrong.
JayMiss is the cause of the hate.
I hate him because he hurts my team.
I washed my hands of him after his 3rd season.
I gave him many chances and I’m not buying his “hot streak” like the Nuthugger Brigade is.

  51. JimmyJack Says:

Now what we gotta do is lock him him long term. Franchise tag should not be a option. Get him 4 years guaranteed at 110M+. Tack on 2-3 years of team options.

Y’all will freak out about them numbers but will understand how wrong you are once Mahammomes signs his deal in 2021. We will all be grateful to have our playoff caliber QB on a solid long-term deal once the CAP goes up and the price for QBs skyrockets.

Sign Winston….then next priority is JPP then Shaq then Suh then Nassib if we can fit him in.
We are the up and coming team for 2020. No doubt about it!!

Hey Joe’s. Do you think the glazers will demand a clause in the context that if Winston gets in trouble off the field again he forfeits all guaranteed money? And if so would he sign such a deal?

    ______<

Pretty sure that's standard NFL contract.

  53. DoooshLaRue Says:

Oh, and it better just be the franchise/transitional tag.
I can accept that for now.

  54. Brandon Says:

Easy up on the guaranteed money, JimmyJack. Why would we do that when nobody else will? To make you happy? If he gets 4 years at $100 or 5 at $125, and I might be fairly low but I think considering all circumstances, it is fair, either way the Bucs do not usually do guaranteed contracts past the first 2-3 years. Why do something like you said if you don’t have to?

  55. Crabby Fan Says:

This decision will not surprise me in the slightest.

BA comes in to fix JW and while at it also extend Licht’s contract.

I would really be surprised if they went another route with JW.

Imo JW had his contract renewed upon BA being hired.

Get used to seeing an empty stadium except for the infused fans for other teams. Can’t wait….

    Go Bucs!!!

  56. DoooshLaRue Says:

And to all of you saying lock him up long term for less…. be real.
When the new CBA happens and QB contracts get much fatter, don’t you think he will want to restructure?
It happens a lot with certain types of players.

    Franchise him.
Make JayMiss prove it…… he owes the team that.

You’re little opinions are running out of steam as the team continues to win.

So go ahead and make all the excuses for winning you want(what fan does this anyway?). The facts are in and the Bucs are a team on the rise. Have you’re little fun all off-season if you wish……But you are useless to stop a bandwagon bro. And when we eye up the door vision next year end route to the playoffs you will be left in the dust with other choice commenters searching for new answers.

    Enjoy the game today!!

    GO BUCS!!!

  60. MadMax Says:

The last 4 games have shown me something that i didnt see in many of the others…his ability to shrug off early mistakes and still keep slinging it. His accuracy and decision making has also imroved a bunch. Something just started to click it seems. I just hope its not a crazy number….he needs to be friendly especially with all of the crap we’ve had to deal with in the previous years, also because we need Barrett and JPP back, Suh too if we can fit his $$ in.

That will allow us to focus on Safety, Oline, and RB
If Delpit is gone by the time we pick, grab that beast RT Jedrick Wills, then we’ll get a Safety in the 2nd Kyle Dugger, 3rd Zakk Moss, 4th C Darryl Williams.

  61. Sleepy903 Says:

TheBucsAnthem you are aware you dont have to be a fan. You can start watching Miami or Jacksonville. Maybe you can jump on the Saints bandwagon. Thats the beauty of this whole thing. 62. TheBucsAnthem Says:

    @ MadMax

So my question to you is this…..who would you rather have if you only had to bring back one between these two players…..????

    Winston

    or

    Barrett

    ???????????????

I for one chooses Barrett……he’s earned his money and dominant Edge rushers are really really really hard to find in the NFL

  63. Couch Fan Says:

The franchise has been saved? He’s been here for 5 years and we’ve made the playoff not 1 single time. No, thats not all his fault but my point is what has he saved and what makes you think he’s capable of saving anything? The fan boys really are pathetic with their love for a guy who has done absolutely nothing yet. I hope next year is the year he cuts his turnovers down. I hope next year is the year he takes us to the playoffs. But I’ve seen nothing that tells me this guy is capable of saving anything without an all pro cast around him.

  64. Cgmaster27 Says:

Look I said it before they going to lock up jameis to a long term deal reason it would be foolish to tag him cause you could either lose him or worse have to pay him more cause desean and Mahomes are going to ask for a ton of money

  70. Jean Lafitte Says:

It’s official. Jameis can have as many turnovers as he wants the next two games because all has already been decided. Although I believe it was a foregone conclusion anyway. The decision was made way before today when Licht was endorsed and extended by the Glazers last off season. The true revelation would have been whether Licht was going to be fired. Jameis and his agent are gonna get paid because Licht has already tipped his hand and left no room for negotiating. Plus, nothing less tan a divisional win will be expected next season.

The reality so far is that Jameis has needed his supporting cast to carry him.
I would like Jameis to win this game despite facing adversity. That’s what great QB’s do. They find a way. Farve did, so did Peyton, the two QB’s everybody likes to compare him with. They were great because they would find ways to win games. Win this game Mr. Franchise.

This team has come a long way since they let a young “black” quarterback go in a year that Tampa was hosting a Superbowl.

Our SB hopes were dashed when Culverhouse couldn’t cut loose 400K to sign Doug Williams but the Oklahoma Outlaws could 36 years ago.

Doug went on to Superbowl heroics after having one of the best performances of all time with the Redskins.

Now the Bucs are primed for a legitimate run at the 1st hometown Superbowl championship.

  75. Couch Fan Says:

A legitimate run at a superbowl championship? Do you even hear yourself. LMAO. We cant even make the playoffs but you are talking about a super bowl championship run. LMAO. I cant stop laughing. That has to be sarcasm right? Got to be. Nobody can be that delusional.

Hang the franchise tag on Barrett and give Winston what he deserves…$120M over 4. After the new CBA, that will be a bargain.

  81. BucsFIRE Says:

Well said, Licht Headed, and perfect.

  82. Bucfan81 Says:

Sorry not sold on Winston. To many turn overs and yes he has had good games but against crap teams. Long term deal would be a huge mistake. Franchise him or let him walk is really the only solution.

  83. Couch Fan Says:

some of u same fans wanted glennon instead, tell me again where is he at
    ———
Same place Jameis is, out of the playoffs.

  84. RagingBrisket Says:

    Draft Tua for insurance

  85. Show me the TDs Says:

    Jameis sucks!

  86. Doug Says:

    He’s a bum!!

  87. Losing hope Says:

Yeah we’re saved. He’s thrown 3picks so far today for 10pts. And he ain’t done he’s trash. The owners are stupid and so are u Joe

  88. SteelStudBuc Says:

Look at how empty the stands are with Jameis.
More interceptions and more points allowed off Winston turnovers and here we go again. They’ve been saved!!! Hahaha I think I just threw up in my mouth a bit.

  89. WestChap Says:

If JW is eating up $30M of cap space each of the next 2 years, we’re just wasting time and money. There will be no way to keep all the WR and DL talent or plug holes in OL… maybe you get lucky with 1 or 2 draft picks and a free agent bargain like Shaq but we don’t exactly have a history of that.

  90. Buczilla Says:

I’m fine with keeping him for one more year, but we need to bring in a vet and rookie to compete with him.

  91. Bobby M. Says:

Guessing he’ll be franchised….Winston is only as good as Bruce Arians can prop him up. You go yr to yr as long as you can while Arians coaches. The better value is in Barrett. He’s cheaper on an annual basis and a better talent at his position then Winston is at Qb. Pass rushers are highly coveted….if needed, you can trade him down the road for a high pick. Winston….not sure what you get for that guy down the road if you’ve decided he’s not worth keeping.

  92. lewis Says:

Nobodys at the game i havent been to a game this year or will i go next year until JW is gone only power fans have is to just stay away 4 interceptions today

  93. lewis Says:

    Owners have to be insane

  94. Deez days Says:

Our GM and head coach is gonna learn … they will be out of a job this time next year

  95. bucy Says:

Wake up joe, the reality is we have not gone to the playoff with this scrub for 5 years and never will you are in true denial it is sickening.

  96. July Joe Says:

Jameis Winston is a 25 year old legend who has already made close to $50,000,000 coming from a poor family in the Bama sticks … and now he’s about to make at least $25,000,000 more for his family.

All the IDIOTS can hate on this kid all they want, he’s never cared and his family is thankful he’s their bread-winner.
