Sacks Tell The Story

November 19th, 2019

Needs much more help.

For those that subscribe to the theory, “Build the trenches,” this story is for you.

It appears a damn good stat unearthed by Greg Auman of The Athletic is an uncanny indicator of whether a team is playing well or not in the year 2019.

It’s called “net sacks.” Meaning, sacks recorded by the defense compared to sacks allowed by an offense. For example, if a defense has accumulated nine sacks and an offense has allowed 10 sacks the team’s net sack is +1.

Or, if a defense has racked up six sacks but the offense has allowed five sacks the net sack is -1.

The Bucs, just four losses from matching both their 2017 and 2018 season records of 5-11, have a lousy net sack number, fifth-worst net sack ratio in the NFL, per Auman.

Last year, the Bucs finished the season with a -3 in the net sack department. This year, they are at -14.

The Bucs currently hold the No. 6 slot in next spring’s draft.

Uncanny, eh?

Teams worse than the Bucs, per Auman? The Dolphins, Bengals, Titans and Jets. Of those teams, only the Titans would not draft before the Bucs if the season ended today.

Uncanny, right?

The team with the best net sack ratio? The Belicheats. Second-best? The 49ers.

Uncanny. Seriously.

So for the folks like Joe who for years have been bellyaching for the Bucs to draft pass rushers, this stat demonstrates Joe isn’t exactly off his rocker.

And for the folks who stomp their feet because the Bucs won’t draft a right tackle, seems you have some ammo here as well.

Nah. Let’s just draft another safety.

  2. Frank Pillow Says:

Amen Joe. Imagine if our GM had the fortitude to draft Tunsil (vs VHIII) and a handful of other good-to very good young OL and DL vs dozens of DBs…teams that win and win consistently have typically fortified the trenches.

  3. SCBucsFan Says:

Or draft better OL and a mobile QB. Math works that way too.

  4. Dusthty Rhothdes Says:

Or the difference between the niners and the patriots is a great front office and competent personnel evaluators who know what is needed to win in their franchise. This moron running the bucs drafts TE, K, and DBs…what franchise is going to win with an emphasis on that

  5. Sport Says:

And a Qback who doesn’t try to make every play a home run. A boring Brad Johnson is a welcomed thought. We don’t need a hero, we a guy to distribute to our playmakers. That is all.

    In BA I Trust!

  6. Troy Says:

Drafting the trenches works if you have a guy qualified making those decisions. Licht is not that guy. He doesn’t know how to draft, neither does Arians. They all need to go. We need a new philosophy.

  7. Tampabaybucfan Says:

I hope we pick 20th instead of 6th……and for all those who wonder why?…..well, it means we would win a bunch of games….

And yes, I’d pick a RT or DE at 20…..

  8. Bucsfanman Says:

Better yet, lets draft a TE who can’t catch, can’t block, and can’t hold on to the football!!!

  9. Pewter power Says:

Lol so stupid you dont need this stat to tell you that teams are successful if they sack the opposing quarterback and protect their own duh that’s building through the trenches and obviously bucs give up more sacks than they get, we had one guy getting all the sacks prior to jpp coming back 3 games ago but ok

  10. DooshLaRue Says:

    Kinda silly info.
Our QB and his sloppy footwork account for a lot of the sacks we’ve taken

Doosh learned a long time ago that stats can be twisted to prove any point….

  11. The Buc Realist Says:

Now joe, look at “net turnovers” the last 5 seasons and see where the Bucs rank and what company they keep at the bottom of the league!!!!!!!!!!!

And while we finally are talking defense, Let us see where all the defensive Coordinators rank around the desert of wins in Buc land!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Loser Frazier 25.6 Points Allowed per Game (16 games)
Loser Lovie – 26.1 Points Allowed per Game (16 games)
Coach Smitty -24.97 Points Allowed Per Game ( 37 games)
mark duffner – 26.45 Points Allowed Per Game ( 11 games)
toilet bowles – 31.3 Points Allowed Per Game ( 10 games)

Pretty telling stats that the local media and sheep will never say or talk about !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

2019 revealed answers to the sheep, That the “real” fans already knew and told the sheep!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  12. Adrnagy Says:

We will draft goofy and Donald Duck.

  13. 813bucboi Says:

how many times do i have to say it…lol…

pass rush and secondary go hand in hand….

folks complain about the secondary, but fail to realize it takes pass rush in order for it to be successful….

    GO BUCS!!!!

  14. Adrnagy Says:

Louis riddick will do a better job drafting than Licht.

  15. OBP Says:

I 2nd what Adrnagy said, seeing the success the Raiders are having this year and how they knocked the draft out of the park is making me see the positives of getting a draft analyst as a GM.

  16. Cgmaster27 Says:

@sport a broing brad johnsom type you say? How was it with mike glennon at the helm averaging about 18 points a week.

  17. unbelievable Says:

Gee, it’s almost like… games are won and lost in the trenches!

    Who woulda thunk it?

Maybe one day we’ll have a GM that actually invests prime draft capital into the OL and DL. Maybe. Probably not.

  18. unbelievable Says:

Through 6 drafts, several of which were heavy with line talent, and several of which we had multiple 2nd round picks, Licht has spent a total of:

One 1st round pick on a DT
    One 2nd round pick on a DE/OLB
Two 2nd round picks on OL.

That’s it. And you wonder why we can’t win games and constantly get physically manhandled by good opponents.

We should be drafting lineman every single year.

  19. Lamarcus Says:

You still need that lock down corner. You’re not getting away without having one

  20. BA FAN Says:

Trenches first this next draft. First pick a LT; Second pick a Sacker; Third pick a DT!

  21. 813bucboi Says:

who’s the ravens lock down CB?

    packers?

    9ers have RS who’s a system CB….

when the eagles won the SB, who was their lockdown CB?…darby?….

pass rush makes the secondary….a great pass rush can cover up a weak secondary….

    GO BUCS!!!!

  22. ArmandoG Says:

I think many of you did not read this posting correctly – we don’t need more sacks per se, we need to stop giving up sacks – every pick 1-4 should be used to address this need, as Dotson should be done, Jensen is not worth the paycheck and perhaps we can find a better LT and move Smith to RT or cut him. I see alot of mobile QB’s who eventually are no longer mobile. Pocket passers have longer careers.

  23. SickofLosing Says:

Fire Lite Weight! Complete overhaul! Build inside out!

  24. doctor_berto Says:

813, Ravens have humphery, packers have jaire alexander.

  25. BA FAN Says:

4th pick OG. Use Free Agency to get a Veteran CB. Move D. Smith to RG and Cappa to RT. Pickup a Veteran OL Backup who can start at any position on the OL. If Jameis gets hurt in a game again; immediately pull him and give some experience to our backup QB and explain to Jameis he throws interceptions when he is hurt and you as his HC need him to minimize turnovers. As to Licht he picked young DBs in the draft to shore up the Defense but he had been told we were moving to an attacking 3-4 Defense with DBs to play man for man and jam receivers just as we were told. Our new DC also said he would play the defense that matches his players. Then against the Saints he played zone the entire game and left our best DB sitting on the bench and made our man to man DBs play back just like past DCs proved does not work. Scrap the zone and play an attacking man to man defense with disguised blitzes boosting the sack total and don’t leave our best DB on the bench ever again!!!

  26. R.O. Says:

Goes back to CONTROLLING the Line of Scrimmage… Im a Broken Record. The Team that controls the LOS usually controls the game.

  27. 2020 What is the bucs future plan? Says:

    WE NEED:

    1. NEW QB
    2.NEW GM
    3. NEW COACHS

    GLAZERS WAKE THE F#@%&*CK UP!

  28. Sport Says:

CgMaster – Glennon was missing a few key components that Brad had. I would say Teddy Bridgewater would be a better comparison. Glennon does have a cannon. Brad not so much. A smart game manager is really what we need. I think Teddy has shown that.

An interesting replacement would be an Andrew Luck reunion with BA. If his head is in it, that could be fun.

    In BA I Trust!

  29. #1bucfan Says:

Beef the trenches up. We need a bunch of veas on both sides of the ball. You would think with suh vea jpp Barrett an a few others we would be giving consistent pressure on QBs an that would help our very young secondary

  30. Sport Says:

I would have zero problem focusing on the trenches. Everyone, including the Bucs know they needed something for RT. No money and good ones aren’t for sale. Bad combo.

    In BA I Trust!

  31. PUGS&BUCS Says:

JW has taken a beating this season.

  32. SOEbuc Says:

Drop Jpp and Jensen and some others for picks and cap space. Trade back first pick and stack the trenches. It’s going to be Jameis 2.0 draft with this team if they draft a top QB. Get big time Safety and CB and a good C that is worth the price. My high picks: RT, DT, DE, ILB. If White continues to improve through the rest of the season, his needs to be switched to OLB if Shaq wants a gigantic contract extension.

  33. Show me the TDs Says:

Joe, I think you explained that backwards. You represent negative net sacks as a positive, then go on to write that -14 is worse than -3.

  34. Pete Mitchell Says:

Looking at the success that Lynch and Gruden are having is pissing me off even more.

To me, their plan to really invest in and build the o-line and d-line is working way better than our plan to try and have the best position players outside of the trenches.

  35. The Coroner Says:

    Joe

Great story as I am one of “it is won in the trenches” guys.

But right tackle. . . .hmmm. Maybe draft left tackle number one and move Donovan Smith to where he belongs. – right tackle.
    Might solve two problems.

  36. DaBux Says:

Jason “AC/DC Loving” Licht has had 4 years to draft and build an offensive line.

    He sucks.

    End of story.

    Defensive line?

    Better but……

  37. DC_Buccs_Fan Says:

    Show me the TDs Says

I thought I was the only one confused here with Formula

But he doesn’t actually say we are worse than last year(we’re just left to assume but WE SUCK)

But my guess is that the Pats & 9ers’s have to be at -32/-40 range or something

  38. DC_Buccs_Fan Says:

    BC*

  39. whaaatttsss uuuup Says:

THE PROBLEM IS THEY NEED ALL OF THE ABOVE!! NOT JUST TRENCHES BUT SECONDARY TOO…. THEY NEED A GM THAT KNOWS HOW TO NAVIGATE THE FREE AGENCY!! THE LAST THING THIS TEAM/ DEFENSE NEEDS IS MORE FLIPPN ROOKIES!!!
