Surprising Second Failed Arians Signing

October 9th, 2019

During the spring and summer, Bucco Bruce Arians was all fired up about two guys he signed from his days in Arizona.

One was running back Andre Ellington. Arians kept saying the 30-year-old was finally healthy for the first time in years. He took a load of spring and summer snaps but was cut before opening day. He remains out of football — as he was last year. Somewhat blocking challenged Dare Ogunbowale beat him out.

The next Arians-Bowles man was their 2014 first-round pick with the Cardinals, Deone Bucannon, aka “The Moneybacker,” a versatile linebacker secondary player. He barely saw action this season and was released today.

Bucannon, 27, was hard-hitting and aggressive in preseason and Lavonte David told Joe what an asset Bucannon was in helping everyone learn the defense. Per Spotrac.com, Bucannon had locked down $2.5 million for this season.

Obviously, the Bucs aren’t going to miss these guys, but Joe finds it noteworthy that Arians essentially whiffed on his own players, guys he knew well.

Hopefully, handpicked veteran offensive lineman Earl Watford, expected to start for injured guard Alex Cappa on Sunday, isn’t the third strike on former Cardinals parading through One Buc Palace.

The Bucannon one is indeed curious. Looked good in pre-season…only to be swapped out for a no-name backer off the street?

  2. Lamarcus Says:

I heard he asked for his release. He came here to start right? Didn’t he bet on himself like Barrett

  3. DB55 Says:

    Earl Watford.

    RUN JAMEIS RUN

  4. Jmarkbuc Says:

BA’s first choice wasn’t David Johnson, either.

He wanted the RB that went to Detroit, can’t think of his name now. He’s no longer in football, pretty sure.

Really starting to lose faith in BA’s supposed skills. Getting Lovie flashbacks.

  5. Mike10 Says:

Didn’t they have to cut him prior to week 9 to qualify for a higher compensation pick from losing Kwon?

Perriman will prob be next from the Humphries signing… good Lord I can’t believe he’s making 11 mil

  6. Anonymous Says:

You do realize by cutting him we gain a third round compensatory pick. That is incorrect. –Joe

  7. Lamarcus Says:

In terms of skill set ….. I just don’t understand why Devonte Bond is on the team? Why? He has had zero production since being drafted. Zero.

Even Dare number 44. Something always bad happen when he is in the game. 99 percent of time

  8. Dapostman Says:

These guys were at the end of the depth chart at their positions. Therefore I like to say, the devil you know is better than the devil you don’t know.

  9. ChipBuc Says:

Joe I saw on nfl network ticker, on bottom of screen saying Bucs will receive a 3rd round comp pick as a result of cutting Bucannon.

  10. Buccaneer Bonzai Says:

According to PFT and PR, they DO get a pick, Joe.
First, don’t see that on PFT. Second, it’s speculation that they get a 3rd-rounder. Third, that’s not why they singed Bucannon and gave him a ton of spring and summer reps, including preseason, that could have gone to a developing player, and that’s outside of the Team Glazer money flush. –Joe

  11. JimbobBucsFan Says:

Is it possible BA hoped those two guys would perform well here but his main objective was to have guys sprinkled throughout the team who would help him install his schemes during preseason training?

Wasn’t his plan to retool rather than rebuild the whole team after all? He wanted to get whoever was playing up to speed sooner than later during the season.

If we come out at the end of this season with a winning record (say 9-7) then we will have a franchise with a dramatically revised culture!

Next off season he will know what he has and have a good idea what it will take to elevate the Buccaneers to a new winning era.

Bucs will receive a 3rd round comp pick as a result of cutting Bucannon.

They might. Formula is very complicated.

  13. TSmitty3000 Says:

Actually, it is his 3rd failed signing. Breshaud Perriman stinks worse than a sulfur plant.

  14. Tampabaybucfan Says:

You could look at this differently……that BA is not afraid to cut a player who doesn’t measure up…even if he chose him…..Licht would hold onto draft picks who didn’t perform….

Like I said….this is a rebuild with a few 1-year contract vets sprinkled in with a boatload of younger players….

    Let’s see what happens.

  15. Colorado Says:

I see them as a Cecil Shorts III type player. Much easier to get players to learn a new defensive and offensive system if you have someone who’s played and had success in those systems in the past. Just like Cecil Shorts was familiar with Koetter from Jacksonville.

  16. DB55 Says:

If he can run, the Bucs should re-sign Emmanuel Hall. The kids a burner, he has good hands, contested catches and he’s 6’2″. I heard he helped a kid named lock or luck sign an nfl qb contract. I’m sure Hall wants to eat too.

Hall can take Perriman’s reps, 4.3 speed, jumps 4 ft, avgs 20+ ypc, he will take the top off of a defense and catch bad passes lol 😉

  17. Jean Lafitte Says:

I think this is trivial. They obviously had Ellington, and Bucannon their for their veteran experience and presence.

  18. T-BO Says:

You think he rented them to help the team with the learning curve of the offense and defense?

  19. Rmayer Says:

Still trying to figure out TJ Logan’s usefulness. Scout team and 18 yard KR avg.?

  20. Jmon300@gmail.com Says:

    So many haters *sigh*

  21. Pick6 Says:

It’s not guaranteed to secure a comp pick, but if that pick formula wasn’t a factor I do believe he would still be on the roster. The only other reason I can think of is to clear a bit more room for a CB trade

  22. FortMyersDave Says:

Yeah, I read a bit about the compensatory picks now that Buchanon is gone the Bucs lost 4 players to FA that are in the compensatory formula including Humphries and Kwon Alexander and essentially picked up 3 (Barrett and ????) so they could/should get something but it could simply be a flush away 7th rounder. It seems odd that Dallas and the Bellicheats always seem to get those day 2 compensatory 3rd rounders though (along with beneficial penalty calls on their opponents, cake scheduling, convenient TV timeouts etc…) Too bad some stat geek does not show us fans how this all breaks down……

  23. CalBucsFan Says:

Arians’ whiffed? Or maybe they were only brought in to help to train up players since they knew the system and coaches, then not playing head and shoulders above the youngins once it counted, they became expendable?

  24. Defense Rules Says:

TBBF … I like your take on this; that BA isn’t hesitant to cut a player who doesn’t measure up, AND that this is a rebuild with a few 1-year FA vets sprinkled in. As far as Comp Picks go, I’ll believe it when I see it (not holding my breath though).

The Earl of Watford scares me, although I’m HOPING for the best. Expecting him & Josh Wells to BOTH belly up to the bar & shine is expecting an awful lot IMO.

BTW, Kevin Minter is also a 4th Arizona guy, but he just happened to already be on-board when BA arrived. Personally think he’s done quite well filling in for Devin White, although I expect White to be better in coverage because of his speed. I’m sure that Minter has been a huge help in any event in teaching our rookie the nuances of the position.

  25. Clean House Says:

I’m glad he will have the courage to course correct. That’s a good trait. I wish he could now cut Jason Licht whom he supposedly helped sign to a 5 year deal

  26. Morgus the Magnificent Says:

Hmmm….sounds like Joe is souring on BA. Welcome to my world.

  27. AlteredEgo Says: Your comment is awaiting moderation. Says:

We get a extra 3rd round pick for releasing him when we did…factor that

  28. AlabamaBucsFan Says:

Joe response to question: You do realize by cutting him we gain a third round compensatory pick. “That is incorrect. –Joe”

Other sources have noted, the signing of Deone Bucannon offsets Kwon Alexander’s signing with San Fran, but now that we cut Bucannon, the offset is negated and according to the computation, Kwon’s contract was high enough to warrant a third round 2020 pick.

  29. AlabamaBucsFan Says:

If we cut Breshad Perriman, I suppose we can get another comp pick for Humphries. Hopefully this is the case as I seriously doubt Perriman will live up to his hype.

  30. Son of Kobe Faker Says:

    “Lol

What does this show about Papa Smurf

BAs Byron Leftwich is koetters Mike Smith

Our QB coach intern is unqualified hack. He should be running a high school offense for a few years to get the experience. He is absolutely klueless

But BA is not here to coach JW3 but to coach Leftfoot to be a offensive coordinator

    We have been duped

    The Great Golfcart Heist ”

    Son of Kobe Faker

  31. TOM Says:

I’m afraid Sonofkobefaker you may be right. Not a big fan of Leftwish. Even getting concerned about BA. Of course there’s no hope for the Glazer’s or Licht. GO RAYS.

  32. WyldKat Says:

I don’t remember Lovie as being the type to cut folks who weren’t working out.

  33. Bucit Says:

Joe did you think the Bucs would be 2-3 at this point. If you did then what’s the problem.
