Five Thoughts

Jameis

Joe offers up five thoughts while looking back at yesterday’s game.

The Beginning Of The End?

Yesterday was a beginning alright. A beginning of a new season. New hope. Christmas morning.

But it didn’t take long for America’s Quarterback, Pro Bowler Jameis Winston, to kick Santa Claus in the nuts, stomp on the toys and p!ss in the cookie jar.

Jameis, who has worked all offseason with some of the greatest quarterback minds in the game, with a fresh start and a coach that believes in him, went out and soiled himself. Badly.

Joe wondered if yesterday was the beginning of the end? We all know this is sort of a make-or-break year for Jameis. He plays well he stays and gets paid big time. Jameis vomits all over himself and he doesn’t hit a payday and he is gone from Tampa Bay.

(Who then signs him? Who knows? And unfortunately for Jameis, who brought this on himself, the thought of signing him will cause most fan bases to freak out.)

Joe thought Jameis was way off his game right away yesterday and Twittered that, which triggered Bucs fans. Those same fans stopped coming after Joe when Jameis’ irresponsible pick-six late killed the chances for the Bucs. Even Joe, a long-time defender of Jameis, knows time is running out for the former No. 1 overall pick, especially with next year’s draft top-heavy with quarterbacks.

Jameis will not be benched.

A small sect of fans wants Jameis benched. That is not happening short of 3/4 of the team storming into Team Glazer’s office demanding change. The Bucs spent a whole lot of Team Glazer loot to bring superior quarterback coaches to tutor Jameis, and to build him up in order to see if he is worth re-signing.

Neither the Bucs nor Team Glazer will find out if they should re-sign Jameis by having Jameis ride the pine … for a guy who has never thrown a pass in a regular-season game. That’s just not going to happen.

It’s not just Game 1.

Joe got this a lot yesterday. “Relax, it is only the first game.” No it is not. Yes, it was Game 1 — of Season 5. Jameis has started enough games so he shouldn’t be hitting defenders square in the numbers like he did yesterday. Plural.

There was no way Jameis should have been that bad. Again, look at the offensive staff he is working with. Jameis is a veteran yet yesterday it appeared like he had made his first NFL start. And it is not like the 49ers defense will make people forget the 2002 Bucs defense.

Nine Lives Will Gholston

Joe isn’t giddy over Will Gholston. And that all has to do with production on the field. Gholston is paid like a cheap starter but he rarely plays to that level. He cannot rush the passer, for example. Well, yesterday it appeared Gholston was rejuvenated. Gholston has always been a good run-stuffer — at a position that demands a pass rush, something he is awful at.

Last year it seemed his run-stopping ability wavered. Starting in place of Jason Pierre-Paul yesterday, Gholston seemed reborn. He had four tackles. Not shabby. Good job, Will.

Rough outing for O.J.

This preseason, Joe noticed Bucs stud tight end O.J. Howard, known to be a good blocker, struggled at blocking. The Cleveland game springs to mind, where Howard was a blocking liability.

Some days, even when Joe is armed with the truth — video and or documentation — Joe just doesn’t want to handle the freaks who scream at Joe as if he’s begging for a plague to befall a player’s house. Knowing how Joe got flamed mentioning rookie linebacker Devin White had somewhat an invisible training camp and preseason, Joe kept Howard’s struggles under his hat. Hey, maybe it was a fluke? Joe picks battles and a preseason game is not one where Joe wants to spill blood.

Yesterday, Howard was getting blown up on blocks, along with a costly drop and a fumble that likely took points off the board, .

Is there something wrong with Howard? Did he drop weight, which may have caused the blocking issues? Or is this all just a fluke?

Bucs are going to let him walk, then he’ll be picked up by the Patriots………

  2. Jmarkbuc Says:

    My five thoughts

    JW is inaccurate
    JW can’t read defenses
JW is not an NFL QB
JW is pulling the biggest fraud in history
    JW sucks.

  3. SmoothBayRider Says:

Sort of a make or break year ? Lol, cmon joe .

  4. NYbucsfan Says:

I’m about done with Winston, I believe I have seen enough!

  5. Loyaltotheend Section 312 Says:

Hey Clueless Joe, how’d Djax look with an accurate qb?

  6. Pittsshore Says:

7.3 QB rating. Nuff said. He will get benched Joe.

I would be curious if “America’s Quarterback, Pro Bowler” auto populates when you type in Jameis Winston. If yes, there is a way to fix that.

  7. Tampabaybucfan Says:

I agree with everything except that Jameis won’t be benched……if he continues to play poorly up until game 6 or 7……he very well could be benched…..he’ll be benched when the decision is made and that likely won’t be at the end of the year.

  8. Pittsshore Says:

Fitzpatrick had a 95.5 rating last year in week 1

  9. Slugglife Says:

Always remember, most journeyman backups started as high picks and starters. Not everybody can be elite.

Then some guy came off the bench and won 6 Suoer Bowls. Griffin may not be Brady, but how would you ever know how good he is?

Never throwing a pass in an NFL game? Cool. What hapoened on Jameis first NFL pass?

  10. DooshLaRue Says:

    Joe,

Just say it was Munch, ndog, webster, DB55 and the other nut huggers blasting you on Twitter……

    Call them out!

  11. Bucsalltheway Says:

Can I get an explanation on what happened to kwon who was playing lights out over devin white. Smh it kind of hurt to watch.

  12. StonedBuc Says:

Howard looks like he lost weight, i kept asking my self who thatbwas on the field.

  13. Dewey Selmon Says:

Coming from Alabama you would think OJ’s blocking was a strength. I think it was a fluke yesterday.

  14. miken Says:

Man… I’ve been hard on JW before but that was terrible. Inaccurate and slow and sloppy. He had time to throw and looked at one reciever at times. Lucky Kwon didn’t have a pick 6 too. He had Godwin wide open and threw sooo late. The crowd that says he has no run game or blames the Oline is fooling themselves… he’s not good and no better today than he was 5 years ago.
One thing I can’t believe I’m about tosay is… Rojo looked great. I’ve spent almost 2 years saying he’s no good but damn I was wrong. Rojo, you the man! It’s a shame bc Bowles showed he can get the D going and be at least average to above average, but can’t do anything with Vinny Winston as your QB. I’m sure he will have a good stretch of games here and there but can’t win consitantly with the guy

  15. Steven007 Says:

Pittshore, funny. Joe loses is a little slice of credibility every time he types that moronic America’s quarterback pro bowler Shiite. But he’s so stubborn that he keeps doing it even though it makes him sound completely and utterly ridiculous. Lose that conceit and the rest of the article sounds just fine.

  16. bucsfan561 Says:

If jameis doesn’t have 2 tds called back were not even talking about this lol I wonder when other qbs have bad games like idk matt ryan do yall drill him the same way?

  17. ModHairKen Says:

It was one game. An important game for perception. An important game for superficial analysts. An important game for creating the right tone. Just like NO, game one of the Super Bowl year.

Jameis looked worse against Cincinnati last year, and I truly thought he was done. But then he put some good games together after Fitz reverted to Fitz. Ryan Griffin is not the solution. For better or for worse, this going to be 16 games with Jameis. If he puts up less than 7 wins, he is gone, gone, gone.

Let’s don’t forget the contributions of the officiating, playcalling and poor execution by others that contributed to this loss. Leftwich is fairly predictable.

  18. DooshLaRue Says:

    Amen Slugg!

  19. adam from ny Says:

we can always just start a #HazeJameis campaign…

every time jameis preforms with clown like antics, suh and vea will yoke him in the showers after the game…

  20. DooshLaRue Says:

Jamies does look very athletic in that pic.
He has such a high ceiling……..

  21. Pittsshore Says:

I also saw NDog on the sidelines yesterday. I noticed every time JW came to the sidelines, NDog would push his “stool in”.

  22. adam from ny Says:

    what if….

what if ryan griffin is the next tom brady???

    what if…

  23. Tampabaybucfan Says:

Josh Allen had 1 solo tackle for the Jags……Devin White had 5…..hell, OJ Howard had 2….
I’m not saying Josh Allen is a bust…..but those who claim Devin White is a bust or worse than Kwon (who was ejected)…..well…..nobody is a bust after 1 game.
    (See Rojo)

  24. Negative Nancy Says:

Also it may be looking like Bruce Arians is indeed over-rated.

  25. Figures Says:

    @modhairken

Lmao yea ok dude yea one game.

Been seeing the same sh it for 4 years.
He is the same as last year and before that.

  27. Riggz Says:

Stop saying “America’s quarterback.” As a Marine veteran, I find it annoying because he is definitely not someone to emulate. He made those same bonehead throws yesterday as he did in his first game. I don’t know why he gets so many chances and various coaches to “fix Jameis.” It’s his personality, temperament, awareness, and instincts that impact his decision-making and barrage of turnovers. Sadly, it appears as though he has actually managed to get worse. Even if he goes out and has 2-3 great games in a row…bad Jameis will resurface. This is who he is and he literally threw the game away.

  28. Anonymous Says:

    @Jmarkbuc Says:
Please stop sugar-coating your comments on JW

  29. Pittsshore Says:

and even better: JW did not leave them hanging with interceptions that put the niners deep into our side of the field. The pick 6 variety will eliminate the JW minions from hanging the loss on the D. Can’t blame the kicker either. Can’t blame the red jerseys. Can only blame Apples McGoo

  30. Pittsshore Says:

^^^speaking of the Ds great game.

  31. BigPoppaBuc Says:

I think Jameis is officially a head case. He looks lost, scared and dejected. There’s NO WAY his teammates believe in him and that is a big, big problem. The defense played very tough yesterday but that will disappear quickly if the QB continues to turn it over and them in terrible situations. Running game was there too and jameis still couldn’t take advantage. This is not looking good at all.

  32. passthebuc Says:

Why would you wait to bench JW? Let’s see what the backup can do. If he is OK, then we can use our first pick to trade down and secure the O/D lines. It all begins in the trenches, it always has and always will.
But no, we will waste the first round on a savior QB that will get hit so many times that he will have a shelf life of Luck.

  33. Greg Says:

perfect article on all fronts Joe! The wait and let’s see what we have mentality is in its fifth year! Gholston is dramatically overpaid and will never show up in a game ever. I am a long-time diehard buccaneer fan but I just don’t see what the foundation of this team is built on. People now see that Ronald Jones is a good running back but our running backs have to hit every button on the joystick just to get to the line of scrimmage. Our offensive line is 100% garbage. Watching Zeke Elliott run is hilarious. He goes nearly 10 yards on every play without being touched by human hands. Pretty sure our running backs would look good in that situation as well.

  34. AllhailJPP Says:

Its the coaching..its the O-line..Its the defense…. hmm..gotta think of something else now.. how the F are there still people defending this idiot. HES NOT A NFL QB.. case closed..been saying it for three years…thats ok, I have room on the get Jaemis out of town bus..all aboard!

  35. DooshLaRue Says:

Sadly, JW will have a good/great game or 2-3 and his nut huggers will feel vindicated.
What really sucks is if we keep him and this sickening roller coaster ride continues for 5 more years.

Give him one more game. If he shats himself again put Griffin in.
See what happens and don’t worry about damaging the delicate psyche of the Soiled Messiah.

    We need to win…… NOW.

  36. Bucamania Says:

Jameis is who we thought he is.

  37. Doc Says:

The last time i checked Jameis, do not play wide receiver, offense line, special team, and did not put together this team. Quit blaming one man and look at this team overall. Wide Receiver walking routes, special team getting punts blocked, defense ends running by the tackles, instead of bashing Winston, bash the GM. When was the last time the team drafted a wide receiver,a offense tackle, we keep bringing in wash up talent. Tell the offense line to form a pocket so this young man can throw the ball, shorten the wide receivers routes and do not let sports writer coach your team.

  38. Iron Wombat Says:

Pittsshore Fitz’s QB rating in week one this year was 38.1

and aside from those 2 games last year, he was a bad QB. He did however set a NFL record yesterday for being the first player in league history to throw a TD with 8 different teams.

for the blame Jameis crowd, Dirk Koetter’s new ATL offense didn’t score a point until minute 52 of their game against the vikings and they had no run game with Matt Ryan being their leading rusher until probably their last drive.

  39. Larry Says:

Different coach. Different scheme. Same old Jameis!!!

  40. Gettinthebucs Says:

Can we get an emergency podcast or something!?! I need the Sages guidance. I’m on the verge of abandoning the Bucs.😭😭😭

  41. Larry Says:

We say 3 pick. It should have been 4 picks but one to Alexander was dropped!!~

  42. Bucnjim Says:

    Doc,
No way you actually watched that game! His throws were only accurate to the other team. Pass blocking was decent most of the game. The only place this team didn’t improve yesterday WAS Winston!

  43. Slugglife Says:

Never FN fails. If you bring up how Brady came to be Brady some dipsh!t acts like youre saying somebody is the next Brady.

Listen dipsh!t, I didnt say Griff could be Brady, but if he never gets game time snaps, how the F would you ever know what his potential is?

    Is that clear enough dipsh!t?

  44. Go Bucs 72 Says:

Buttsore, your takes are stupid and Fitztragic is terrible. You make yourself look like a complete moron every time you bring him up.

  45. miken Says:

That’s 20 turnover for Jameis in his last 12 games. O line looked pretty good and so did D line. I don’t t see things getting better on a short week.

  46. Rayjay1122 Says:

I am sick of hearing about RG4 never having taken a regular season snap. How canned that if he is never given the chance. There was a time when Brady backing up Bledsoe had never taken a regular season snap. That whole argument is beyond lame. Face it, Testaverde Jr. Probably wouldhave outperformed Winston who Ironically wears #3 which is exactly where his arse belongs on the depth chart.

  47. knucknbuc Says:

hey joe how did desean look yesterday for the eagles? funny carson wentz had no trouble throwing deep to desean. looks like desean wasnt slowing down for him on his routes. remember #AllDESEANSFAULT. lmaooooo laughable

  48. Slugglife Says:

Careful RayJay, sime dipsh!t may accuse you of annointing Griffin the next Tom Brady.

  49. Hodad Says:

If you use a first round pick on a TE to help your second round LT block, you might as well used that pick on a LT who doesn’t need help blocking. Instead the Bucs gave D.Smith a big new contract instead of just signing, or drafting a better one. Jameis has some great offensive minds working with him, and he still looks like a rookie throwing picks all over the field. I take that back, comparing Jameis to a rookie QB isn’t fair to rookie QB’s. Anyone think Koetter, or Monk, didn’t try coaching that out of him? It can’t be done Joe! We got on Koetter for benching Jameis last year, but he was right, dude just isn’t any good. I just wish Koetter would’ve went to Griffin instead of Fitz, At least that way we’d know if Griff could play.

  50. TheBucsAnthem Says:

I’ve been saying this since after Jameis second year cause the first year as a rookie he got a pass for all of his boneheaded mistakes.

He’s not an NFL Caliber starting QB…….he’ll go the way of blake bortels……..Tremendous talent with all the tools but has terrible decision making in games.

    #TIMETOMOVEONFROMJAMEIS

  51. SC Bucs Fan Says:

Its clear this team won’t win with JW at the helm; can you imagine him at the helm in an important playoff game? He will lead us to 6 wins and at times look great but let another franchise pay him 30M.

  52. Defense Rules Says:

Very good article Joe, thanks. I feel better. No wait, I don’t. Hadn’t noticed OJ all game (other than his fumble of course). So Bucs have ruined yet another 1st Round pick? Please say it ain’t so.

Personally didn’t see all that much of a pass rush (Garappolo going 18-for-27 and only being sacked once kinda confirms that?). But the run defense was stout IMO (loved SF’s 3.1 YPC average). Didn’t key on Will Gholston any, but he did get 3 solo tackles & 1 assist. Pretty good I think.

And as far as Jameis goes, Bucs HAVE TO take a QB in Rnd 1 next year, even if we end up franchise tagging Jameis (doubtful IMO). He MIGHT get benched midway through the year, but probably not until Gabbert makes it back. I don’t know what it is about Griffin, but no one seems to want to cut him a break and see what he’s got in a real game. They’d rather lose with Jameis throwing multiple INTs & making multiple fumbles.

  53. miken Says:

@doc… not sure what game you watch but d played pretty good, recievers played well and o line did a good job. True, no excuse for the blocked punt and a few dumb penalties but overall, a pretty good team effort that should have been a W. With average qb play, bucs when rather easily.

  54. Greg Says:

We could probably trade him now to Jacksonville who just lost their quarterback for maybe a second round pick. Let Griffen start at least until our other quarterback is healthy. If the Dolphins are desperate for draft picks and thinking at this year maybe we can get Rosen for Jameis straight up or draft picks

  55. Greg Says:

    tanking

  56. LargoBuc Says:

I hate to say it but I think we all know the answer to the Jameis question. He should not be resigned as a starting qb. We don’t need 15 more games. Besides maybe the Giants or Cards, we don’t get an easier game than yesterday and Jameis lost it for us. It was a sign of our 2019 season.

  57. Rayjay1122 Says:

Imagine a guy begging for money for food. You give him $10 and he buys vodka. This cycle repeats over and over. Finally trying in a last ditch effort you bring the guy a sack of potatoes instead of $10 and he garments the sack of potatoes and makes vodka.

Winston is a bum. He can’t be changed no matter the approach. It is time to make an exit strategy ASAP.

  58. Snook Says:

All 5 thoughts are valid. Well done.

The part that keeps popping up in my head is that has anyone heard of a QB who came into the pros and all of a sudden found his rhythm in year 5? Also, with all of the other QBs Arians has dealt with, did any of them struggle like he did before BA came around? Manning, Luck, Big Ben, Palmer… Not really. Palmer had some down years but his early years in Cincy were good.

I’m also one who says to take Week 1 in stride. A lot happens in the first two weeks that makes no sense later in the year. Hell, the Saints have lost 5 straight season openers.

But big time worries here with Jameis. Does anyone see him going into Carolina in a prime time game and not screwing up?

  59. TheBucsAnthem Says:

    #TIMETOMOVEONFROMJAMEIS

  60. Rayjay1122 Says:

    Garments = ferments

  61. TampaTown Says:

    GettintheBucs:
I agree. I feel like I need someone to talk me off the ledge. I feel like I want my Mom to hug me and tell me everything’s gonna be alright while I’m sobbing into her shoulder. I feel like being a Bucs fan is like Groundhogs Day in he!!

  62. Rayjay1122 Says:

So, after week one, we can conclude that all NFL teams calling Florida home really suck.

  63. Greg Says:

Believe me I’ve been very critical over Jameis Winston and hated the draft pick from the start. That being said to at least be fair people have to remember this is a new offense and Brad Johnson took almost a year to learn Gruden‘s new offense. Also people are going to see the 49ers defense is way better than last year when they added Nick Bosa and brought in a pro bowl defensive in from Kansas City. John Lynch knows it’s about the pass rush! Alexander will be back for them next week as well. They are actually contenders not the pretenders everybody thinks from last year.

  64. miken Says:

@greg… not going to happen. Instead of taking a kicker late, the Jags to the washington st qb in the 6th round and he went 22 for 25 and 275 yds a 2 tds. I’m sure the jags have better recievers and tes than we do though…lol. Ain’t nobody trading for a 20 million dollar player who will be a free agent.

  65. BucsBandit Says:

    START GRIFFIN.

What’s the point of having a guy pay his dues for years if he’s never given a chance when the team now needs him more than ever?

  66. BucsBandit Says:

It’s obvious Jameis isn’t the long-term answer. That’s why you let Griffin have a chance to see what we have in him to possibly save a high draft pick looking for another QB.

  67. 813bucboi Says:

Very disappointing performance from Winston and OJ….

    GO BUCS

  68. Anonymous Says:

Don’t be stupid here. This is not the beginning of the end. It is the end of the end for Winston. The beginning of the end started with the ’17 season where it was revealed who he really is. A turnover machine. Poor sport. Poorer character. Nothing positive on him since end of ’16. All negative and controversy since. The owners know this. The end is playing out. Winston WILL take all snaps while he’s here. At that is on or about April or earlier.

  69. Bird Says:

    Nice try joe

Jameis will have a good game next week and you will ask where are all the haters at?

  70. stpetebucsfan Says:

We had questions entering the game. Some are getting answered and not in a good way…others might turn out to be a pleasant surprise.

Running back is not as serious a problem as folks feared. OL is not the disaster we all feared. The D showed up and our DB’s seem to have talent…but still clearly lack experience. Don’t know what to say about VHG though…a horrid play then an interception.

Bottom line I can see a positive future for all the Buc’s with most questions answered pretty well except….QB.

What about JW? He’s made his job even tougher…the pressure now will ratchet up to career breaking levels. IF JW makes it he will have done something amazing because right now his career appears in shambles.

Bench him? Put the best eleven on the field on Sunday and forget about next year and all the contract BS. IF JW is the best QB we can trot out there fine…if one of the backups is better make the change.

I want to win NOW!!! Thursday!!! I do not care about JW’s feelings..or those of his supporters. Play the best player…the player who gives us the best chance to win…if that’s still JW so be it.

  71. Bird Says:

True story . Had a 49ers fan sit next to me and I asked what he thought about Jameis

It’s like he didn’t even know who Jameis was really
    Couldn’t give his opinion

    Yet he is America’s quarterback
And the American flag gets shown
    What a joke

He is consistently inconsistent . I still think he is average
Good games / bad games and all average in the middle.

  72. Greg Says:

Bird just stop. even if you were right you can’t win this division with a quarterback that is completely up and down every other week. Looking good once in a while doesn’t make up for self-destruction every other game.

  73. Dusthty Rhothdes Says:

Trade Winston for some of the guys that want out in the Miami tank job, and grab rosen..maybe get 3 players for winston,

  74. Old School Athlete Says:

So if Joe is correct, Winston is our guy until we are mathematically eliminated. Let me guess, fans need to be patient, right?

  75. Christopher Schiefen Says:

Well, they literally hired an old career assistant as the head guy in lieu of Jameis learning a new offense (Koetter), so being thrown in the big pool of BA’s offense is rough. Add to that BA’s offense is predicated on the QB being pressured (MOAR ROUTES) and what a panicky guy Jameis is…
Add in the fact Leftwich admitted BA is barely involved (let’s not think 80 year old Tom Moore is doing much, and let’s not think Clyde Christiansen is a god because Peyton Manning was). So in my mind we’ve got a rookie coaching a rookie (Left & JW).
On a side note, it seems Joe again doesn’t understand this defense, in that Gholston is essentially a running stuffing tackle now…that’s the nature of the 3-4. Shaq Barrett replaced JPP. That said, woo, did Devin look bad. Joe may’ve been right on that one?

  76. LordCorn Says:

Jameis is done here if he doesn’t turn it around immediately. So disappointing. God this team sucks to root for lol

  77. Greg Says:

.Bird I completely agree with your second post. My response was to your first one

  78. BFFL Says:

This morning I’m leaning more towards the relax column. new offense for everyone and there was no tape of niners new defense. With that said JW was terrible

  79. Bird Says:

    Greg

Trust me. I am not on the Jameis train
And I think arians had a mini heart attack last night

    “I came back for this”?

  80. lowercaseg Says:

Trade winston and OJ, brate was the only TE catching anything and got two td’s called back. I’d be fine with Brate and Hudson in two te sets. Oj is starting to look like a high priced mclaren that looks nice in the garage but crap performance and durability issues. Hell, trade jameis to miami for fitz. Jameis just can’t get these forced interceptions and bad decisions out of his head. His first pick 6 he overthrew it to peyton barber, wth are you thinking? Last pick 6 was just him crapping the bed. When you force a fart its usually S*** and that’s exactly what jameis did.

  81. Joeypoppems Says:

I said this weeks ago and i will say it again. A successful season for the Bucs this year should be dictated by whether or not Jameis’ contract situation is clear, one way or the other.

Yesterday was a step in 1 direction, albeit, not the direction i was hoping.

  82. Dusthty Rhothdes Says:

CMC is going to destroy this bucs defense on Thursday. The bucs defense is still not that impressive, the niners offense is very bad. Where are all the exotoc blitzes and man coverage and etc. I saw 4 man rush and cover 2 and 3 and then some mix ups when they went man. The gators DC runs a hybrid 3/4 and brings pressure from all over and hangs his corners out to play man knowing the rush/blitz will get there. Bowles seems he has no confidence in the bucs corners playing press man. Whitehead can play that in the box safety and without him breda would have had 200 yards rushing

  83. Frank Pillow Says:

We’re reaping what we’ve sewed. Jameis’ most unique trait is escaping accountability for his actions. On the field, off the field, this organization has gone out of its way to sell itself and all of us on Jameis’ biblical leadership skills and knack for willing his team to victory. All in the face of violating that faith with his Uber antics (which called his candor into question) and three years of regressive play. The fact of the matter is Jameis the rookie was/is a better player than Jameis the 5th year starter. Stats are stats and wins are wins. It’s the lack of wins that is most damning here. For years I tried to rationalize the Ls as being solely the fault of an atrocious D or a lack of a running game. It’s more than that. It’s cultural, instructional. It’s an organization that encouraged and enabled Jameis to be the guy who pumped his team up by eating his ‘W’ fingers and yet couldn’t see the inherent humiliation associated with his antics. That was the day Jameis died in the locker room and the front office just couldn’t see it. They still don’t.

I have tried to be a JW supporter..mostly because I am an optimistic person. But JW is consistently inconsistent. It’s been the same thing every season, so far. I hate the thought of having to start over again, drafting a new qb and having to go through those growing pains, but it seems that’s where we are headed.

  86. Nate Says:

Joe we can get rid of Winston it starts with your writing about its time for a change.. The guy just doesnt get it done… I wish he did but he doesnt give Ryan a chance I want wins I dont care how much money you put into jameis stop putting money into a bad investment!

  87. Pittsshore Says:

    Yo Greg, Stop embarrassing yourself.

  88. Jean Lafitte Says:

Stop. You’ve always liked Howard so you give him a pass. You’ve been picking on White since he was drafted, because you wanted Josh Allen.

  91. AceOfAerospace Says:

Let’s not forget, a potential 3rd pick six hit Kwon Alexander right in the hands.

  92. Conte Piscatelli Says:

My three positives from that game
    1. Rojo looked like an NFL running back. His burst showed and he looked like an actual starting caliber back
    2. The defense looked worlds better than last year, especially given the crappy turnovers from the offense
    3. Gay made all his kicks. When was the last time a Bucs kicker has said that?

  93. TheBucsAnthem Says:

    @ Conte Piscatelli

You still hurting from getting Stiff-armed outta the NFL??????

  94. BrianBucs Says:

It will really stink this year when this new defense plays well enough to win but the terrible QB keeps giving games away

  95. SC Bucs Fan Says:

Why oh why would Miami want Winston?

  96. TB22 Says:

I agree he wont be benched Joe.

Mainly because TB does not have a viable back-up.

If Fitz were here this season., JW would see the pine….soon.

Bottom line is Winston has always been a turnover machine.

  97. Patrickbucs Says:

    Well stated Frank.

Let see what this team can do on a short week and the next few games. I will be interested to see how our d does for that game and how our o-line holds up. Thought both did very week yesterday.

  98. orlbucfan Says:

The defense and Matt Gay are positives that will only improve as the season goes on. Jameis? He reminded me of a frightened deer caught in the headlights. Where’s the fearless Jameis of his rookie season? Mirage?

  99. Quattrolou Says:

Kwon is still a Buc at heart and was trying to do is a favor yesterday.

I’ve been in board with Winston this whole time. I defend him all the time. I hope and wish every game he proves everyone wrong. Something about yesterday though did me in.

Jameis will be pitching next year if he is not a/the starter in the NFL. He has options.

  100. NPRSageBoy Says:

Boo Hoo…. Poor Joe. Just stop the JayMiss cheerleading and give us the real scoop on these horrid players and JoeBucFan will continue to flourish.

It has been implied in whispers that DJax was a cancer here. All he did yesterday was score 2 TDs > 50yds. He outplayed every Buc yesterday.

    I guess that’s a “good” cancer.

  101. Buccaneer Bonzai Says:

I’m not fretting at all. It really was one game, whether people want to admit it or not. New offense. They barely played in the preseason. I went into the game fully expecting a loss and some early season struggles.

Sure, Jameis was worse than expected, but he also glimpsed a few good things that were out of the ordinary.

The problem is that when Arian was hired, you all expected instant change. It never happens that way.

  102. DB55 Says:

The picture says it all but by all means bench him for griffin. Please, pretty please. Tired of reading all the lame-brains thoughts.

  103. AceOfAerospace Says:

Winston was babied and mentored all off season and he still played like a bad rookie in his first start. He has “suck” deeply imbedded in his soul. One or two games will not change that. I don’t care if you throw 500 yards a game, your team will probably lose if you continue to throw 2-3 pick 6’s a game. I don’t give a damn about Winston’s “good” stats. A loss is a loss.

  104. Pittsshore Says:

Dear bonzai: Please do us all a favor and use one of your other screen names when writing stupid remarks. It may at least get read by some folks. Although, your latest entry would’ve been stupid/ignorant if God wrote it himself

  105. Buccaneer Bonzai Says:

    Pittsshore Says
“Dear bonzai: Please do us all a favor and use one of your other screen names…”

Unlike others here, I only use one screen name.

And just because my opinion contradicts your agenda, it doesn’t mean it is stupid.

  106. BuckyLove Says:

Do you suppose Kaepernick is really working out every day and waiting for a call?

  107. Bucsfanman Says:

Definitely a disappointing start. Jameis did not look good at all. However, we need our best players on the field. Does anyone really think Ryan Griffin is the answer, and after ONE game…….one HORRENDOUS game!
No, Jameis is going to get his shot. If he plays this bad over a 5-6 game stretch, other options should be considered.
Just really bad football overall yesterday. There were a few positives though:

    ROJO had a nice game
    Kicker made his kicks
    Defense looked MUCH better

This was a win-able game for us and we gifted it to San Fran.

  108. Dusthty Rhothdes Says:

Bonzai…there are no more excuses for jameis…its his 5th year…there is no excuse for that game sealing TD he threw….nos bos you around?

  109. Oregonbucsfan Says:

Bonzai: “Jameis was worse than expected, but he also glimpsed a few good things that were out of the ordinary”.

Bonzai, it’s not the contradictions that make your comment stupid, it’s the words you say that are stupid. Please elaborate on exactly WHAT you saw that were good things out of the ordinary. Jameis was horrid from beginning to the end of the game. A few nice completions occasionally- -and the rest was putrid.

    Where’s “10 win NOSBOS”?

  110. JimbobBucsFan Says:

    No fair, Negative Nancy!  LOL.

How can a “head in the sand” optimist like me dispute other  posters by calling them negative nanceys when you have taken on that handle?

We will see what kind of head coach Arians is if we  bench Winston by mid season and insert Ryan Griffin over Blaine Gabbert.  I see him as a game manager who will have a low interception rate.  He could be the guy who salvages the season in spite of the fact that he has never played a down in the NFL.  It might be time to find out about him.

  112. firethecannons Says:

    five thoughts:
1)We have had 5 years of this quarterback-it stops in 2020
    2) OJ Howard will be given a mulligan
3)too many high priced players who can’t get open but could fetch a high draft pik(mike evans)
    4)Dotson will retire 2020(move D.Smith to RT)
5)Bucs will get a new QB from draft as we are salary capped to buy a good one
xtra:6)jameis will shat his pants against Panthers

  113. Posey99 Says:

Shaky, patting the ball too much, staring down receivers, slow wind up, happy feet, too much emotion not enough composure. He is either a late bloomer maturity wise, or doesn’t have the mental capacity to perform at this level.

  114. Buczilla Says:

I’m beginning to think that my prediction of 4-12 was overly optimistic. Next week will only be harder against McCaffrey (he looked awesome this passed weekend) and the dancing dumba$$.

  115. Jmarkbuc Says:

    Ya know DB55,

There are times when you make some pretty salient points. Intelligent, heady stuff.

But if you are seriously gonna try and defend this complete and total imposter of a QB, I have to ask….

    WTFD you actually K?

  116. Jmarkbuc Says:

As sad as it is to be talking draft after week one…..

Who says we have to draft a QB round one? Build the rest of the team instead and pick up a couple guys in the third, fourth round to fill the QB roster spot.

I can deal with some more losing until there is some solid base here…then go after our great QB.

That and Joe Montana was taken third round.lBrady n the sixth. Haven’t we been burned enough by “sure fire” first round QB’s 🙄

  117. MTM Says:

I don’t care about Winston’s coaches and training at this point. He played horrible. He hasn’t regressed. He’s never been good to begin with. The team has won in spite of him if they manage to win. Winston is the GM’s legacy.

  118. Tony LA Says:

A lot of you are really reaching here and are idiotically delusional if you think Ryan G is going to make a difference. This team is doomed and has been doomed for YEARS for 3 simple reasons:

    1. We have a horrible O-line
Anyone who tries to argue this point knows zero about football. I’ve said on this site for years that as long as Donovan is the LT, the line will stink. Period.

    2. We have a horrible pass rush
This has been going on for 10-13 years. We can’t get to the QB. Teams that can’t don’t win. Period.

    3. We have a QB who becomes a turnover mission when under assault. Make no mistake, he was under assault yesterday as most QB’s of losing franchises usually are.

When you mix #1 and #3 it is going to be a disaster.

Licht is a horrible GM because those 3 areas above are the 3 most important areas in football. Everyone knows this. All the best teams are built based on it.

Licht flat out ignored all three areas this offseason.
    And got an extension.

It’s frustrating to root for a franchise like the Bucs. It sucks. No one needs this kind of constant disappointment in one’s life – especially when you have zero control of making it better.

    HOWEVER

this was game one of a new regime.
Let’s give these guys through week 3 to adjust and to make it better before bailing.
