Buccaneers Busy Scouting The Trenches

January 24th, 2019

Senior Bowl happenings

It’s Senior Bowl week in Alabama. While Bucco Bruce Arians and his gigantic coaching staff are home, general manager Jason Licht and his comrades are there — and they’re being watched.

The rock star himself, former Bucs general manager Mark Dominik is there working for SiriusXM NFL Radio and said this morning on WDAE-AM 620 that he has seen the Buccaneers operating in Mobile with a heavy emphasis on offensive and defensive linemen.

That doesn’t mean the Bucs aren’t scouting other positions, just that Dominik, who has probably been to 25 years of Senior Bowl practices and activities, sees Tampa Bay having a high percentage of bodies assigned to scouting the trenches.

Yesterday’s Senior Bowl practices were moved indoors because of bad weather, and teams were extremely limited in the numbers of scouts that could watch because of space restrictions. And media largely was limited to watching on TV, which doesn’t offer much if you’re really trying to study a prospect.

Anyway, it was an interesting observation by Dominik, who said he could see the Bucs making drafting an offensive tackle a priority if Donovan Smith is evaluated and the new regime doesn’t want to pay him big free-agent bucks in March.

i watched some practices from tuesday and wednesday….OL, i was impressed with the alabama state kid…forgot his name but he was stone walling some of the best DE’s from team south…..

    I. Buggs from bama was dominating along the DL as well as another small college kid….

the DB’s from kentucky were all big, long and could cover….really impressed with them…..temple has a CB that kept flashing…..

lots of good players at the senior bowl….

    #REALISTKNOWSNOTHING!!!!!!!….GO BUCS!!!!!

  2. Kobe Faker Says:

“Rockstar must be looking at the wrong scouts

Gump and his boys like to go to the west coast and draft

rumor has it that few of gumps scouts likes to more than occasionally light up

there is good info that they went to Humboldt county community college to bring back the fattest stoner to Tampa”

Rock n Roll is DEAD in America need a new nickname for the failed one.

  4. Phil Says:

That’s OK football games are won and lost in the trenches.

  5. Elita Vita Says:

    @ 813 bucboi

You were probably referring to Jonah William OT Alabama.
I agree with his value. BUILD THOSE TRENCHES! Go Bucs!

  6. Duthsty Rhothdes Says:

So reassuring that a HC is not at the senior bowl and allows this inept scouting dept and gm to continue in their losing ways of looking for players. Licht took a last place team in the nfc south and built them into a last place team in the nfc south, while not addressing the OL with common sense and doing his “smartest guy in the room” moves and at the end of the day licht you are just a below average gm that somehow has a job in the nfl

  7. Elita Vita Says:

    ^Williams

  8. Lordcornelius Says:

    Good.

  9. Elita Vita Says:

    @Duthsty Rhothdes

I am guessing Coach Arians has his hands full accessing the current roster. Anyway, Bucco Bruce is all about delegating and putting his faith into his staff. Seems to get more out of his players and his staff that way.

  10. Trench War Says:

nothing would make me happier. It’s not sexy but it makes the difference in winning and losing. Look at how the top teams build their teams. They put premium emphasis on the trenches season after season

  11. Duthsty Rhothdes Says:

Elita Vea, I hear ya on the delegating but I am guessing the glazers hired him to do the working on jameis not clyde the glyde nor letfwich…i hope after dismantling the roster to his liking he gets the ship righted….i am hoping for sam wyche 2.0 and if its better then win win

  12. BucEmUp Says:

They need guys with attitude guy that play angry…

  13. JJV Says:

The entire draft should be exclusively OL/DL. Address the other needs in free agency or trades. A solid, young foundation on both sides of the trenches will go a long way in building a consistent winning team. Not to mention how it will result in the other positions become better.

  14. jmarkbuc Says:

    I’m with you Duthsty

Seems like the Fox guarding the hen house to me…Or more accurately, the Doofus guarding the draft board…

  15. Pryda..sec147 Says:

Great pic there ! Lol 😂 we should go Dline in 1st and oline in the 2nd

  16. 813bucboi Says:

    eliat

nawl the kid was from alabama state….i dont think jonah is in the senior bowl…..he knows he’s going in the top 10 at worst….

his name is tytus howard….6’6 322….played QB in high school….light on his feet, lateral movement was great….was able to sink his hips during bull rushes…..the kid looked great….they had him playing G and T….looked comfortable at both positions….

    #REALISTKNOWSNOTHING!!!!!!!….GO BUCS!!!!!

  17. Elita Vita Says:

    @ Duthsty Rhothdes

I agree with you. Arians was hired to try to get the most out of Jameis. I also believe his own agenda is trying to further the careers of the younger coaches that he has hired…. especially his ex players and coaches from Temple and other places. His style is to give them support and confidence by believing in them. Would love to have a contact such as he.

  18. AlteredEgo Says:

I am waiting to see who Mark Dominick says we should draft….

  19. Elita Vita Says:

    @813 bucboi

You are correct, Jonah Willams is coming out being a junior.

  20. Bruce Blahak Says:

for the future of this franchise, the high draft picks should certainly be about the trenches…DBs, LBs and offensive skill players to the later rounds this year

  21. Bobby M. Says:

How much draft capital did we pump into the o-line and yet we find ourselves rebuilding?

Same with the secondary….Same with RBs. On top of that, how much have we wasted in free agency?

  22. Buccaneer Bonzai Says:

Kobe Faker, life is short…if you can’t laugh at yourself, call me. I will. 😉

  23. Tackleblockwin Says:

    @bucboi813

Read your post. Your mention of the kid from Temple (CB) caught my eye. I immediately thought of our new HC and DC and their Temple connection.

  24. TexBuc Says:

I will wait till they start playing to critique the team with my SUPER armchair GM abilities until then in Bucco Bruce I trust.

  25. TOM Says:

Lindstrum G Bos. Coll. looked good. Oklahoma G looked good (forget his name. But IMHO the first pick should be J. Williams T ALA.

  26. Tampabaybucfan Says:

Cap space problems may force Bucs to trade GMC & not sign D. Smith So, our first two draft picks may be DT & OT depending on who is available at the time of the picks.

  27. Bucsfanman Says:

813, etc- LUV had some video of Tytus a little ways back. Good film. Might be worth a look.

  28. ra'shad Says:

Any thoughts on the OL from OU ? I forget his name.

  29. Pickgrin Says:

This is a VERY good draft for DLine and a good one for Oline.

And we just happen to have need in both areas. (for the last 15 years)

    Time to stock up.

I’m hoping for a trade down from #5 and four picks for the trenches by the time day 2 is complete. (end of 3rd rd)

An OT, DE/Edge, DT and OG. Preferably in that order…

    Git-R-DONE Jason Licht

Too many like to trash the GM and say he’s not bringing enough talent in.

    I say – That’s BS!

Just wait till you see how many young players and vet players alike already on this team have career years in 2019…

  30. #1bucfan Says:

This is music to my ears. I think everyone on the world is screaming for Tampa to fix the trenches.

  31. Joe Says:

Any thoughts on the OL from OU ? I forget his name.

    “The?”

  32. Kobe Faker Says:

“Kobe really hope we can be creative in the draft and fill our much needed holes

5 holes to be filled thru the draft or FA

    Left tackle (release DSmith)
    Def t. ( release gmc)
    Mlk. (release kwon)
    #1 corner
    Runningback

Gump, you want to be on Kobe’s good side? Do you want to be forgiven of your sins?…

    TRADE DOWN…

Get 3 starters in the draft and fill the other 2 holes at FA and Kobe will forgive”

    Kobe Faker

  33. Defense Rules Says:

@Pickgrin … “Too many like to trash the GM and say he’s not bringing enough talent in. I say – That’s BS! Just wait till you see how many young players and vet players alike already on this team have career years in 2019.”

Personally hope you’re right Pickgrin. So far though, Licht’s been here 5 years and his record is now worse than Dom’s.

  34. MadMax Says:

DE Oshane Ximines and montez Sweat are both on the south team…..very worthy of watching. Sweat will go before Ximines in the draft but Ximines could be there in the bottom of the 2nd, top of the 3rd….unless he really balls out hard and ups his draft stock. I’ll be working so i’ll have to find a replay somewhere.

  35. MadMax Says:

LG BJ Autry, 6’5 340lbs will be interesting to watch too…..thats a big dude to move.

  36. MadMax Says:

DT Daylon Mack, Big Mack truck coming through…6’1 320lbs, Texas A&M….yeah this kid has a nice bull rush.

  37. LJS4th Says:

LT at #5!! Find the best one or two and hope that one will be there!!!

  38. MadMax Says:

Crap, Montez Sweat is going to end up being a top 10 pick by the time these games and the combine is done. He was slated to go in the late 1st. I’d love to see him under JPP’s tutelage (built a lot like him)

  39. Dave Says:

Excellent. Every single year there should be offensive and defensive lineman drafted in the top four rounds

Other than that all they really need is a running back and another cornerback.

DBs Are becoming like a lineman. In today’s NFL you should be focused on taking some every draft.

  40. joestang Says:

just keep licht away from draft board.

  41. D1QB Says:

    Pickgrin,

4 picks by day 2, and I assume you see the need for a CB and a RB in the latter rounds is BS after 5yrs. If licht was bringing in the talent there wouldn’t be a need to trade down for extra picks.

  42. #1bucfan Says:

I believe our g.m. Has drafted more good than bad but it’s not his job to coach them that’s what coaches are supposed to do. Now that we have upgraded our coaches we will see the fruits of his labor I hope at least or I could be dead wrong lol

  43. D1 Says:

    $1Bucfan,

I agree with you to a point. For example, the fact that our starting o line doesn’t have a single player who is athletic enough to get to the edge and set a block. I don’t care what you do its just not happening. It’s not coaching it’s a player’s lack of sheer ability.
Now could you coach around it, ah..no . Not in the NFL.
