“We Will Attack”

January 10th, 2019

UPDATED 5:40: A lot of Bucs fans are wondering what type of defense new Bucs coach Bucco Bruce Arians will instruct his defensive coordinator, Todd Bowles, to use when the new coaching staff takes the practice fields at One Buc Palace.

In so many words, Arians said it’s whatever defense works for the players he has to work with.

“We will do what our players do best,” Arians said.

He did not elaborate.

However, Arians sang music to Bucs fans’ ears when he said of the new Bucs’ defense, “We will attack!”

With the Cardinals, Arians’ teams were among the NFL leaders in blitzing.

Arians did say Lavonte David would be an ideal inside linebacker, hinting he’s confident David can fit into a 3-4 scheme, the one preferred by Bowles.

Loved it when he said he asks his coaches to tell him not what a player can’t do, but what they can do. No doubt the players loved hearing that too.

  3. stpetebucsfan Says:

That was exactly where my mind went CalBuc.

We gotta believe the players are watching and hearing all of this just as we are…some will be really jacked…some may start packing their bags in anticipation of their future…and that’s a good thing.

i enjoyed that too… so un LOVIE and KOETTER…

hopefully arians has enough leadership and big enough SACK to overcome the incompetent glazers and soft mentality of this locker room.

  5. Iron Wombat Says:

Yeah and maybe after 5 years someone will finally teach the Bucs D how gaps work.

  6. TexBuc Says:

    Love it!

Now we have “no risk it, no biscuit” on defense and offense

    The Bruce is here

  7. old time buc Says:

I am finally excited by this coaching staff. I know they have their work cut out for them but at least the vibes are good!

  8. GoBuxFla Says:

We’re gonna need more and bigger cannons.

  9. Waterboy Says:

I remember Mike Smith saying that too in his early press conferences. So as exciting as it sounds now I’m going to wait and see.

  10. 813bucboi Says:

    LOL….

    shots fired smitty!!!!!….lol…

glad to hear the HC say something beside, “i dont know”

    we’ll see what happens….

    GO BUCS!!!!

  11. TexBuc Says:

    Waterboy

Mike Smith did say that, but he has no history of a blitzing defense.

  12. Tampa Bay Demon Says:

    “We will attack.

and then we will attack AGAIN…

and when our resources are exhausted
and our backs are against the wall…

    WE WILL ATTACK.”

    — George C. Patton

  13. JJV Says:

Joe, just like I posted earlier. He reminds me of General Patton in so many ways. Just because he is getting older will not change his beliefs and methods of coaching. The Bucs are on the verge of a major transformation. Buckle up.

  14. Bad Influence Says:

Love the Patton reference! Go Bucs!

  15. SchwiftyBuc Says:

Still rustles my feathers that Mike Smith was calling for his Dlineman to essentially 2 gap and free the LB’s up to make plays.. That ish was WEAK!

  16. Buc1987 Says:

I feel good about this coach.

    This is the Bucs though…..

    Go Bucs!

  17. Slugglife Says:

A defense that tackles would be fine with me.

  18. Joel Says:

Duh. This is what good coaches do.

    “Your system is your players.”

  19. Bucs fan #7423 Says:

Finally a coach with intelligent scheme!

  20. Tampabaybucfan Says:

The hiring of Arians & Bowles will make Jason Licht’s job much easier. There will be many FAs that will want to play for these coaches.
I really don’t think there were many if any who were terribly interested in playing for Mike Smith.

  21. Bobby M. Says:

Everything sounds great right now….That’s how selling hope in the off-season works. Remember “youngry”…”toes on the line”…”big mf sticks”. It’s all Rah-Rah marketing. Buc fans have heard this song and dance for a decade.

  22. Dave Pear Says:

    Tampa Bay Demon,

    Great quote. Thanks for sharing.

  23. Pittsshore Says:

He had better get some DBs that can actually cover someone

  24. Asdf Says:

I’m super excited to see what LVD does in this new scheme. He was so dominant in Schiano’s defense and was such a good tackle for loss guy. Can wait to see him unleashed again.

  25. Jerry Jones Says:

Can Arians talk to JW now or do they have to wait until OTA’s?

  26. Bucs fan #7423 Says:

Arians can get Desean Jackson and Jamies Winston to kiss and make up

Hopefully also get djax return more punts

  27. AKickInTheBucNuts Says:

Slugglife says:”A defense that tackles would be fine with me.”

Let’s combine the two and ATTACKLE!!!

  28. Mike Evans Goat Says:

    Food for thought
Vernon Hargreaves was starting to show signs of improvement. But that was under our previous staff that was under qualified and couldn’t develop a cold. Imagine what a good staff could turn him into. Plus Carlton is no slouch. For me the pick at #5 has to be one of the Williams (Quinten,Jonah, or Greedy)
Super excited for this new staff and some qualified coaches.

  29. Stanglassman Says:

Any news on DL coach Kasy Rogers or B. Buckner?

  30. SchwiftyBuc Says:

    @Mike Evans Goat

I’m real high on the Williams’ but don’t sleep on Clelin Ferrel. Dude is a beast and would serve as a very good bookend/eventual JPP replacement.

  31. Bird Says:

Bowles likes to pray press coverage at DB

  32. SOEbuc Says:

“With the Cardinals, Arians’ teams were among the NFL leaders in blitzing.”

Go 3-4 and scoop Devin White at #5 if you’re picking defense.

  33. SchwiftyBuc Says:

I mean… Devin white is a 3-4 MLB, which is a a lot closer to being a standard 4-3 Linebacker… so you wouldn’t need to switch to 3-4 to pick him… and there even with the current injury questions surrounding Kwon and Kendall, there are bigger needs on this team than linebacker… like CB, RT, Edge rush, RG, DT…

  34. TOM Says:

This is the best HC hire since Gruden. And we all know how that turned out. Any word on Duffner as LB coach or Buckner? I don’t know about Duffner but Buckner is signed for 2019, why not utilize him?

  35. Stanglassman Says:

Kacy Rogers (DL) chose the Bucs over Gaints. Bad news for Buckner and Buckner fans.

    Still need WRs coach
    &
Rbs coach-Maybe Stump Mitchel? Not sure if the running back coordinater is a Rb coach.

  36. BigPoppaBuc Says:

Damnit I’m geeked again… But this time in a way that makes me feel foolish for having so much optimism before. I think our roster has enough talent that a coaching staff of this caliber can make us competitive. I think they need to go after Patrick Peterson. Imagine him and Davis on the edges with a coached up VH3 in the nickel. That would be nice. Justin Evans and Whitehead should improve as well. Everyone is so concerned with Winston but I’m certain if this defense can improve to say, top 15 we are playoff bound. Very exciting week! GO BUCS!!!

  37. Stanglassman Says:

NFL Network is talking about DJax lack of production here and how Jameis forced the ball to Evans. That tells me they never watched a game and don’t know what’s going on now. They said Jameis had 88 Tds bs 76 turnovers (of course everyone though it was TD/Ints. They acted like it was so bad not that was about the same as P Manning. 111/90 TD vs turnover 1st 4 seasons.

  38. JimmyJack Says:

Great plan Popa. Get our secondary help in Free Agency. Use draft to help the trenches for 19 and beyond.

Another great option is get the Honey Badger. He plays all over the field so it immediately upgrades 4-5 positions all at once!!

    GO BUCS!

  39. Joe Says:

  40. JimmyJack Says:

My favorite part of Bruce’s speech was when he said he will be running Two practices!!!!!!!!!!(Why the frick were we only running one?).

His first order of business is to have this team practice twice as much. This is proof positive that last year’s team was under prepared.

You can’t win in this league if your competition is outworking you.

No, no, no, no. Arians is having two practices simultaneously.

The NFL/NFLPA labor pact of 2010 has banned two-a-days. What Arians is talking about his having two separate practices for the offense, two for the defense at the same time.

On one end of the field the first and second team players will practice on offense, the third team and camp meat will practice on the other side. Second field, same thing with the defense, first and second team on one side of the field, third string and camp meat on the other.

The NFL monitors every and all practices at every team facility. If a team tried to have two separate practices in a day, that team would be heavily fined and could lose draft picks.

  42. JimmyJack Says:

It may not mean double the work for starters but it will be a lot of extra work as a team.

Arians mentioned something about players not getting better standing on the sidelines. Bravo! This team needs to practice more. Those guys standing on the sidelines are gonna need to make a frickin tackle for us someday.

  43. Tampa Bay Demon Says:

^^^^^^^ and dont ya think?…. that maybe just maybe…. guys like Noah Spence, Ronald Jones and Cappa might have benefitted from such a notion.

Hell yes, bring it Bucco Bruce.

  44. Rod Munch Says:

Huh? Why would you move David inside? He’s a perfect edge rusher outside LB who can also drop into coverage – but inside? In a 3-4 you generally want big guys, like Beckwith, in there, not guys a bit on the smaller side. Kind of an odd statement.

  45. TexBuc Says:

In a one-gap 3-4 defense the only true LB is the MLB positions. Much like lining up in a one-gap 4-3 under formation the MLB and Weakside LB both will up in the middle of the formation with WLB on the right and MLB to the left behind you DTs. If we are switching to a traditional 2-gap 3-4 then yes David is too small to play LB.

  46. TexBuc Says:

Core philosophy of a one-gap defense is to play on your opponents line of scrimmage so LB speed to play sideline to sideline is more important to size.

  47. Buccaneer Bonzai Says:

Jason Licht drafting Vita Vea last year seems more planned now. I suspect he’s been hoping for Arians to come back, and probably spent the past year working on him.

    Bobby M. Says
“Everything sounds great right now….That’s how selling hope in the off-season works. Remember “youngry”…”toes on the line”…”big mf sticks”. It’s all Rah-Rah marketing. Buc fans have heard this song and dance for a decade.”

I get it. We have heard it all before. Heck, I felt the same just this morning.

But then I went to the Bucs site, watched all his video. Then I went to youtube and watch his A Football Life.

The coaches we heard it from? They only said those things so they could come off like a coach like Arians. The biggest difference is that none of them had the track record…he does.

I mean..last year we had 22 starters injured throughout the year. Our backups got killed. In his second year with the Cardinals, they had 26 injured players. And he still won 11 games.

Given how we get hit buy injuries, that is exactly what the team needs.

Two practices at the same time..one for starters, one for backups. Everyone getting equal reps. Why?

So that the backups develop and are ready when called.

It’s the reason he is building a large staff. He treats coaches like players. Develop them, and have backup coaches ready to take over when they get offers.

Bowles might get offers after having success here. Leftwich might too. But if the move on, they will have prepared their replacements.

    Love that.

And he made it clear…we won’t be 3-4. We will be what works best for the players or against whoever we face.

One game we might go 4-3. Another it might be 3-4. He will do whatever it takes to win.

Fans will be pulling their hair out on 3rd and inches when he decides to go deep instead of going for first down…if he fails. And I can, once again, forget about having a coach that uses a fullback (darn it), but he’s a guy who will show no mercy.

A point or more per minute. If the Bucs control the clock for 36 minutes, he wants at least 36 points.

    Instant evolution to the culture.

  49. SKBucsFan Says:

okay. Now I am excited. When does the season start?

  50. Tampa Bay Demon Says:

Great post Bonzai, with ya man.

Watched all those same vids this morning, an yes Arians is indeed an original. He is his own man in a copy cat league.

  51. Kansas95Buc Says:

Again, all I can ask any HC is just to put the team in the best position to win and have a never say die mentality

  52. Tampa Bay Demon Says:
