Nod Of Approval For Dirk Koetter

September 28th, 2018

Fond of Dirk Koetter.

The Bucs may not win a Super Bowl this season and may not even make the playoffs. But for entertainment, the one and only Chris “Mad Dog” Russo likes what he sees from Bucs coach Dirk Koetter.

Earlier this week, Russo, broadcasting on his show “Mad Dog Unleashed” heard exclusively on SiriusXM Radio, was wrapping up commentary from the Bucs’ loss to the Steelers on Monday Night Football. And while Russo spent several minutes detailing why Steelers coach Mike Tomlin is overrated, Russo does like Koetter.

“As far as Tampa is concerned, listen… Koetter is a good offensive coach. He’s a good offensive play-caller — a good coach,” Russo said. “They got back into that game. He gets the ball to [Mike] Evans. He’s got a home run hitter in DeSean Jackson. He can utilize the two tight ends. He is a good offensive coach.

“Now I’m not sure how good of a coach he is overall, but he’s a pretty good play-caller. And Tampa is a team that is obviously dangerous from an offensive perspective.”

Russo, meanwhile, without saying his name, is not a fan of Mike Smith’s defensive prowess. Joe will write about that later.

But from an offensive standpoint, Russo believes the Bucs could do a lot worse than having a man like Koetter running the show.

    JOE,

What happened to the podcast? Only one hour left!

  2. Pryda...sec 147 Says:

    Seriously I’m with McGregor here

  3. FowlBall Says:

This is an outrage! I want my money back!

  4. BucNole Says:

Do we know for sure if Dirk had a larger role in the play calling against the Steelers????
It seemed very Un-Monken like in the first half

  5. LakeLand Says:

Dirk Koetter is a pretty good offensive playcaller?

And people actually listen to this clown, Russo

Is he too dumb to realize that Todd Monken calls the offensive plays?

  6. Lord Cornelius Says:

Lakeland was thinking the same thing. People really don’t know sh1t about this team outside of actual Bucs fans / people in tampa / ex Bucs

  7. Joe Blahak Says:

    ….waiting…Irv where are you?

  8. Ryan McGregor Says:

    JOE,

A little over half hour left! Don’t let us down this time!

  9. gbobucsfan Says:

I thought Monken was calling plays?

  10. 813bucboi Says:

Now I’m not sure how good of a coach he is overall

    ^^BINGO^^

    and either do bucs fans…..

and to add to that, dirk has mention several times that he doesn’t get involved with the defense which should tell you he’s not a very good coach overall, just an decent offensive play caller…..

    #NOEXCUSESIN2018!!!!….GO BUCS!!!!

  11. 813bucboi Says:

and he aint even calling plays……

does this clown even watch the team!!!!!!!

    #NOEXCUSESIN2018!!!!….GO BUCS!!!!

  12. Dapostman Says:

Another loud mouth talking head who brings attention to himself with his screech like antics. So this Einstein is impressed with a coach who scores 30+ a game and isn’t impressed with a coach who gives up 30+ a game. Joe, it must be a slow news day if you are digging up this clown who by the way I NEVER WATCH or LISTEN to his show. Now you know why.

  13. Architek Says:

I WANT MORE MEDIA HEAT ON MIKE SMITH DAMMIT – hold him accountable like every other faucet of the Bucs organization has been held.

Geez. Man Greg Williams defense in year one is better than Tampa
Schwartz defense in philly is better in one year
Wade defense in year one is better than Tampa

Stop this nonsense and turn up the heat – niceties aren’t fixing a clear and present gap. Injuries are a league wide problem but that has nothing to do with busted coverages and the ever mentioned “communication issues” teen that’s thrown around loosely.

  14. 813bucboi Says:

    realist…bonzai….DR……come defend your boy smitty……

their excuse will be it takes time for all these new pieces to fit and figure out how to play together…..and we all know that’s BS….

as ive been saying for 2 going on 3years, it aint the players and talent, its the coaching and scheme!!!!!!!!!!!!

    #NOEXCUSESIN2018!!!!…GO BUCS!!!!

  15. 813bucboi Says:

    sunday44

I agree….you hit the nail on the head!!!!!!!

    #NOEXCUSESIN2018!!!!…GO BUCS!!!!

  16. Phil Says:

How could anyone be a fan of Mike Smith except for his wife because of the massive pay check he brings home.

  17. Buc1987 Says:

Sunday_44….you want them to score 50 or 60 points a game?

Are they last in the league in offense?

  18. Joe Says:

    Architek:

You could make an argument Mike Smith may have killed Jameis’ career.

What is the main thing people b!tch about with Jameis? Losses, like he’s supposed to play DE or CB. Last year defense coughed up four leads that Jameis gave the Bucs in the fourth quarter which is exactly what you want a quarterback to do.

  19. Buc1987 Says:

All summer long YOU fans whined about….oh woe is me we’re going to be 0-3…..

The team beats the division winner in their house….then beats the SB champs…..almost beats the Steelers…..

    What happens next? MORE WHINE.

I suppose if they go to Chicago and beat them to go 3-1……the same fans will be back on here whining about Koetter this and Licht that and missed draft picks and all kinds of horsesh*t!

This team could go on a tear and be 9-1….the same people WILL b*tch.

  20. Buccaneer Bonzai Says:

    LakeLand Says
“Dirk Koetter is a pretty good offensive playcaller?”

He must be pretty good, considering we’ve had the best Bucs offense of all time since he got here.

  21. Buccaneer Bonzai Says:

    @Buc1987

I agree. I’m pretty happy with the season so far.

  22. Buccaneer Bonzai Says:

I think we win the next six games. Assuming Winston gets in there.

  23. DBS Says:

But the same people will b*tch if they do it and Jameis is not the starting QB. So I will take it in stride and see what happens for now.All I want are wins and a good season.

  24. JabooBuc Says:

Sunday_44- possibly one the dumbest posts I’ve seen here in some time and that’s saying something. Your judging him on things like injury disclosures, who’s calling plays, and draft picks playing? Really?

Who seriously gives a sh€t about any of that? In case you haven’t noticed, the NFL is about wins and losses. You know who also sucks with injury disclosures? Bill Bellicheat. Hell, the only reason any coach shares injury info is because they have to so all the gamblers are happy.

Dirk is 2-1 with his backup QB and rookies starting in the secondary playing a murderers row in the first 3 games. Why don’t you get your head out of your ass and give the man some props?

  25. JimmyJack Says:

Bonzai…..Why go through all that trouble? You could have just responded that #5 takes away all credibility to #s 1-4. Very senseless point.

  26. JimmyJack Says:

Mike Smith’s defense should look a lot different this week.

We won’t have to worry about All-Pro receivers and HOF QBs.
This week we get a rookie QB on a offense led by Howard. We are built to stop a run so I expect that to happen……..If we can score some early points it will be huge factor if Mitch T. Ahas to throw a lot. If our Dline gets a lot of passrush opportunity we will really be looking good.

Here you go Mike Smith whiners…..with Chicago’s a erage offense our corners can play up so you can stop crying.

  27. JimmyJack Says:

I expect to see our defense look similar to the Philly game. If you recall we gave up only 7 points in the first three quarters(actually they scored on the last play).

You can look at any stat you want and say anything about that game but you’re wrong if you don’t think our defense won that game………Give up seven points in any three quarters and if the offense doesn’t have a 2-score lead then there’s a problem

  28. Sharthappens Says:

    Just win baby

  29. Anonymous Says:

    Careful JJ

Remember Keenum, Rams game 2016……We made him look like hof’er

  30. JabooBuc Says:

JimmyJack: agreed. This defense is getting better and if people can’t see it they are choosing not to. I said this earlier but short of the opening quarter of the Saints game, I can already see improvement over last year and game over game.

Keep in mind we have been riddled with injuries and have played 3 of the best offenses in the league. Held the Eagles to 7 thru 3 quarters and the Steelers scoreless in the 2nd half. The dolts will say they gave up 30 in the first half but will forget that the offense turned the ball over 4 times with one being a pick 6.

  31. Duke Says:

The reason the offense looked different in the first half is simple. If

  32. JimmyJack Says:

Hey Jaboo……..People get too worked up over these stats. We are winning and that’s all that matters. And when you look at our two wins we had those games put away early. Half of those stats aren’t even relevant since the game was already won. And I know some former Bucs teams would have found a way to lose those games but this team is different……… Just like Monday Night Football they were different. Normally I would have went to bed early if a Bucs team was losing by three scores at halftime. But you can’t sleep on this Bucs team there’s no way with all the weapons we got.

  33. LakeLand Says:

    JabooBuc

It seems like every team in NFL history that had a strong defense also had a strong run-game

    They go hand in hand

  34. LakeLand Says:

You’re not going to have a top ranked defense with a low ranked run-game. The Bucs should know this by now.

  35. JimmyJack Says:

And I swear if Dirk defers the kickoff………Well, Fuc* it I’m writing a letter to One Buc Place. It’s never worked for four seasons and it’s doesn’t work.

I have chosen to give Dirk the benefit of the doubt over the first few games because they were shootouts so maybe it was a good call there…….but if there every was a time to score first it’s against little baby Mitchy and applay as much pressure you can to that kid til he cracks like a egg!!!!!

  36. JimmyJack Says:

Yo Lakeland. Any thoughts on our young CBs? Carlton & M.J.?

  37. JabooBuc Says:

LakeLand: it certainly helps your defense statically to run the ball effectively. Obviously you run the clock and shorten the game while also resting your defense. I do think this is an area that will improve over time. I think they were trying to commit more to the run on Monday but then sound themselves trailing big due to the turnovers.

  38. LakeLand Says:

    JimmyJack

    I like Carlton and MJ

    I liked them in college

I think they are good young corners

  39. LakeLand Says:

    JimmyJack

I know I was on here bishing about the Bucs drafting Derwin James and Donte Jackson.

But I will settle for Carlton Davis, MJ Stewart, Jordon Whitehead as a consolation

  40. JimmyJack Says:

Hey for what it’s worth we have not even tried to attack anybody with our run yet. Our running game is basically untested at this point.

The only time we’ve used our run has been on end game situations. Those have been brutal.

  41. JimmyJack Says:

Yeah Lakeland……That was quite a hual got got back when we traded our top pick. I’m loving wahat I’m seeing from a playmaking standpoint from those 3 DBs. Ofcourse the big defacto will be Vea.

I don’t know much about the college players but I loved the Vitavpick/highlights…….Partial to the beef players

  42. LakeLand Says:

    JimmyJack

The Bucs has to find a 3-Tech to pair with Vita Vea

GMC is getting up in age

  43. Bucsfanman Says:

LakeLand, JimmyJack- Thank you for not contributing to the “sky is falling” mantra. I’m not a Smitty fan but there’s more to be excited about than not. This team FEELS different, it ACTS different. Through 3 games, this team looks resilient and PESKY!
Watching these youngsters play gives me hope that the defense WILL turn the corner. Davis has played well as has MJ. Whitehead is going to get the opportunity of a lifetime and he’s already shown to be around the ball. Vea will take a little more time but I think it will pay dividends in the end.
Yes, our defense can improve. Does anyone think it won’t?
I think it will, and through sheer talent!

  44. JimmyJack Says:

Bucsfanman……….I do like our chances on defense but we have not had enough tests in the redzone. Especially, with M.Smiths defense, our redzone percentages are extremely important. His defense is kinda designed to clamp down in the redzone.

We need to quit giving up big plays and get more redzone opportunity s. Those will be the most important battles going forward IMO.

  45. Rod Munch Says:

Uh Dirk isn’t calling the plays, well at least not most of them – if you want to see Dirk’s calls, look at the last two years, which consist of running it up the gut on 1st down in the 1st half against 11 in the box. The only thing Dirk has done this season so far is to STOP calling plays, well most plays. Dirk WAS a good play caller under Lovie when he sat in the booth, could read the field, and spent the entire week working on nothing but the offense, but he’s been a terrible play caller since Lovie was chased out of town and he took on the full team responsibility (which is exactly what people with an IQ over 13 said would happen at the time).

With that said I’m pretty sure Dirk told Monken to start running up the gut on 1st down since after not doing that all year, with the Bucs down 3 scores and needing to score quickly, Monken at one point ran the ball up the guy I believe 4 times in a row on 1st down, with predictable results.

Also Dirk said we MUST run the ball more, even though when we’ve ran less we’ve won more. But Dirk is the kind of guy that will punt the game away, who will punt from the Steelers 36 in a shootout, so he’s the kind of guy who thinks you run an NFL offense like it’s 1978. Anyways look for the Bucs to have a lot more useless runs up the gut against the NFL’s best run stopping defense, and except predictable results that put the Bucs always in 2nd and long, just like the last two years.

  46. JimmyJack Says:

Munch…..Dirk didn’t call any plays in the first two games. He did call a few against the Steelers on Mon Night but I bet he calls more in the cooler City of Chicago.

We may need to get Monken going in the Falcons contest and let him take over entirely.

  47. Buc68 Says:

Yes last year Fitz lit up the Jets and Dolphins… Incredible. I think the Jets had 5 turnovers and we won by 5 points. He’s clearly a winner. Surprised Fitz got boat raced by Atlanta after he was able to dismantle the 2017 Jets and Phins. They were powerhouses. Speaking of Atlanta, sense they were the only common opponent in 2017 between Jameis and Fitz can anyone post both guys numbers in that game? Same team verses same opponent, seems that would be the most accurate comparison?

  48. DavidBigBucsFan99 Says:

Mike Smith has prowess???? I’ve seen gold fish with a meaner bite! 😂🤣😂🤣Koetter it’s not a good play caller. He does not make adjustments and has no creativity. He runs the same unimaginative plays and is so predictable. All defenses need to figure him out is Offensive Game Calling for Dummies. They can say what they want but he took over play calling for a period of time Monday night that’s why we were down by 20 at the half
