Things That Will Make You Smile

September 11th, 2018

Joe was just cruising through tidbits in the wake of the Bucs stomping on the Saints in their own crib on Sunday.

* Only three times previously in Bucs history has the team scored 48 points. We all know the last time the Bucs had that high of a number was when the Bucs won the Super Bowl.

The other two times came against current NFC South rivals who were then part of the NFC West.Β In Father Dungy’s last season as Bucs coach, the Bucs put up 48 points to beat the Saints 48-21 in 2001. In 1987, the Bucs beat the Dixie Chicks 48-10. Like Sunday’s win in New Orleans, that beatdown of the Dixie Chicks came in a season-opening game.

* The 529 total net yards the Bucs racked up were the second-most in a single game in team history. The most came at Minnesota in 1980 (573 yards).

* DeSean Jackson, with his 58-yard touchdown catch, is now tied for third in NFL history with most touchdown catches of 50- or more yards. The other two tied with Jackson are both in the Hall of Fame, Lance Alworth and infantile ingrate Terrell Owens.

* The last time the Bucs scored touchdowns on their first two possessions was when they beat Seattle in November 2016.

* The last time the Bucs scored on their first three possessions was a loss to Indianapolis in November 2015.

* The last time the Bucs had two touchdown passes in the same game of 50- or more yards was against the Packers on December 7, 1998. Hurt Emanuel had a 62-yard touchdown and Jacquez Green had a 64-yard touchdown.

This is the major reason we don’t even need to think about Leveon Bell. Yes he’s a great RB who can catch and brings explosiveness.

Does it really look like explosiveness is an issue with this team. Yeah those stats put a smile on our faces but our eyeballs should please us even more.

Remember what we SAW…forget stats…yeah DJAX and ME13 had bombs and looked great…but so did Godwin…he made the sickest catch of the day to move sticks. OJ wasn’t targeted a lot but he had a couple of huge catches…Brate had a TD jobbed from him by the ref…Hump got his touches…had a giant gain negated by a rare penalty…

Really…it’s actually hard to be guilty of hyperbole with this offense. Which superlative is over the top? Barber looked effective in the first half…the OL played well the entire game…and the number of legitimate targets is just amazing!!!!

This team truly has EXPLOSIVE talent. Yeah let’s all smile. Our offense has the possibility if #3 plays like most of us expect to be as good on offense as our historic SB team was on defense.

I realize that is not satisfying for many of our posters who believe defense wins championships. Perhaps that is correct…I’m hoping there is more than one way to the job done.

And we shouldn’t need to address the offense except perhaps for another stud OL. We should now be able to convert to #weaponsforSmitty

Here are a few other things to make you smile:
    Per PFF:
Marpet produced a perfect 100.0 pass-blocking efficiency rating on the day, with no sacks, hits or hurries allowed in the win over New Orleans. While the headlines go to Fitzpatrick and his receivers, Marpet did the dirty work up front.

    Also

Doug Martin had 6 touches(4 rushing and 2 receiving) in the Raiders loss last night for a total of 17 yards or 2.83 yards per touch).

On Sunday nite football, they all said the Eagles would beat the Bucs, they asked Tony Dungy, he would not commit to that, he has confidence in this team.

Joe saw Vernon Hargreaves with his left arm in a sling in the locker room. Feel free to draw any conclusions you want from that. Although he told Joe he “is good,” the sling suggests otherwise. We’ll see.

I’d say coach Smith has plenty of talent to at least field a statistically average NFL defense.

GMC, JPP, LD54, Kwon, Grimes – there’s 5 Pro Bowl level players out of 11 starters. At least one at each level. Beyond that – Curry is an obvious upgrade to any other DE we had last year. Justin Evans is ready to bust out in his 2nd year. Hargreaves looks revived. Both rookie CBs already look like they belong on an NFL field. We drafted a young man beast at DT in the 1st rd who should be back from injury any day and will likely contribute this year. Beckwith should be back after game 6. And then there’s Chris Conte… LOL

Yea we need to draft a good young DE next year and the young players like Vea, Davis, Stewart, Whitehead – even Ryan Smith, Hargreaves and J. Evans all need degrees of further development.

But lets not pretend that this Buccaneers defense is still devoid of talent and all that Mike Smith needs is better players to field an “average” looking NFL defense.

Smith has plenty to work with. Nobody is expecting a top 5 defense from this group. But a top 20 defense to go along with a top 5 offense isn’t asking too much from this group of players. Is it?

Power rankings are filtering out and the bucs still not getting any respect…which is great in my mind. Means we can keep playing the disrespected/underdog theme up for a couple more games. Seemed to have our guys motivated Sunday!

The little cutie pictured above makes me smile a lot. But I will NOT..be happy with these Bucs until I see a distinct Defensive improvement! Our DC Smiity..SUCKS!..So far.

I remember that Packer game in 98. Monday night football, we sacked Favre 5 or 6 times, had a couple of picks…ah the glory days!

  24. joestang Says:

no reason we can’t beat Philly. Foles had success against the Bucs. We owe him one. NO EXCUSES, MAN UP

  25. Pickgrin Says:

I remember well that ’87 Season opener vs the Falcons at the Sombrero.

Deberg had probably the best game of his life while #1 overall pick rookie Testaverde watched from the bench.

For just a minute – the Ray Perkins era started with a ton of hope…

The Bucs lost the next game – and then the players union went on strike. Bucs “scabs” won 2 of the 3 games played before a new deal between the league and union was resolved. The regular players came back for the 6th game and proceeded to blow a 20-0 early lead at home over the Bears when injured QB McMahon hobbled off the bench late in the 3rd quarter to lead the Bears to a dramatic come back victory.

Two weeks later the Bucs blew a 28-3 4th quarter lead over the Cardinals and lost 31-28 after the Cardinals scored FOUR 4th quarter TDs in one of the biggest comebacks in NFL history.

The Bucs lost 8 straight games to finish the season 4-11 and the reality of the “Perkins Era” was established as the exact opposite of what that 1st huge win of the season had suggested…

It had already been 5 years at that point – yet unbelievably, it would be 10 1/2 more years from that one triumphant opening day in ’87 before the Bucs would play in another playoff game.

  26. stpetebucsfan Says:

    @Pickgrin

I think we actually agree completely. I think this past off season was the first of the #weaponsforSmitty. Notice how many of those guys you mentioned are brand new Bucs or like Evans in their second year.

This is why I am so jazzed about this team. These guys haven’t even had time to truly jell yet and our offense is so loaded that next year’s draft can also be #weaponsforsmitty.

But yeah this year’s D has way more talent than last years and we should get better as the season progresses. We have three rookies in our defensive backfield who all show a lot of promise but are after all rookies who will play the second half of the season better…we hopefully also get to add Vea to that mix for the second half of the season…and Grimes…this defense has a large potential for growth as rookies learn and vets get healthy.

  27. DB55 Says:

But of these years how many times did they reach the playoffs?

  28. SB Says:

Damn Pick! I wish I could remember that well that far back. Too many drugs for me?
