A True Pro Bowl Return

October 2nd, 2017

Stunning return

The absolute greatness of Brent Grimes is not lost on Joe.

Think about what Grimes’ last seven weeks have been like.

First, Grimes gashed his shin deeply in training camp and missed all of preseason and some practice time. Then there was Hurricane Irma and the needless bye it created. The Bucs returned to the field a week later and opened up against the Bears, and Grimes was barely tested in an easy win. The following week Grimes missed with a shoulder injury, and then here comes Grimes back Sunday to step in and match up with athletic-freak receiver Odell Beckham, Jr.

No problem.

Grimes was fantastic. Officially he registered three passes defensed, a stat he led NFL cornerbacks in last season.

Oh yeah, and Grimes is 34 years old and plays like he’s 25.

You could make a strong case Grimes is the MVP of the Bucs defense, especially after the order he restored today following the secondary disaster in Minnesota.

The guy is simply a tremendously physically and mentally gifted football player.

This is one reason the 2017 season is so exciting. The Bucs have superstar-caliber talent at every position on defense. Now they just have to get healthy and on the field together.

Straight baller…and Miko has been entertaining if anything. I hope the Bucs try and tack on another 2 year deal for Grimes.

  2. Rod Munch Says:

Huge difference today with Grimes in there. Then again it’s a huge difference if Ryan Smith isn’t there. So you’re getting two times the huge difference!

  3. lambchop Says:

Hargreaves got burned by OBJ but luckily OBJ stumbled on the play and it was a harmless incompletion. Hargreaves is good with short and medium passes, but his reaction time on long balls is slow. I don’t think it’s a foot speed issue, it’s a play recognition issue. Hopefully he gets it ironed out.

Grimes is a beast. Best off-season addition that has paid dividends so many times.

  4. Hawaiian Buc Says:

We lose this game without Grimes. We MUST sign him for next year. Don’t know what more he has to do to prove to people that he is a great CB.

  5. celly Says:

    @Hawaiian..

He has 2 more years here (including this one). He signed a 3 year deal with us when he came.

  6. celly Says:

    edit:

I stand corrected. I genuinely thought he signed a 3 year deal.

You’re correct, he NEEDS to be resigned before the offseason.

  7. Dreambig Says:

Watching Grimes vs watching Hargraves is a very different experience. Grimes is much more psychical and aggressive. VHIII gives to much space and is not aggressive enogh to make it up. Grimes does not easily let himself get pushed off he ball and out of the play. I tend to forget VHIII is so young but it’s crazy how much smarter Grimes plays.

  8. tnew Says:

Hopefully this is Darrel Green v.2. VHIII needs to learn Grimes’ confidence on the ball. The gulf between Grimes and VHIII is unfortunately wide. VHIII did make a couple of solid open field tackles. Grimes is the difference maker. Conte played better and more confidently, Tandy looked better, I am going to give Justin Evans credit here. Haven’t watched coach’s film but he appeared to have a decent game including one open field tackle and was credited with 3 tackles. Heck Ryan Smith made a spectacular special teams play.

When Grimes is in everything is in order. GMC played very well. Was a destroyer to day, but Grimes was our defensive MVP today.

  9. PRBucFan Says:

Yall talking about him resigning with us are probably doing it in vein.

Someone asked Miko on twitter tonight about him being with the Bucs next season and she said he will more likely than not retire.

  10. ManzielMadness Says:

    @Pickgrin

If that’s true then we really need to be looking at CB towards the top of the draft again next year or hope a stud (like Grimes) hits FA. I agree with Hawaain this guy was the biggest difference make on defense this game. if he’s out, Odell and co torch us. On a side note great win! A couple miscues, left some points on the board, hopefully we can get that cleaned up in time for Thursday.

    Go Bucs!

  11. PRBucFan Says:

    PRBucFan* not Pickgrin lol

  12. simon Says:

Everybody ready for the woodshed beating we are going to receive on Thursday given the fact the patriots lost on sunday…thanks stinking panthers!! I just hope the bucs keep it respectable 40 -10 and brady under 500 yards and am good.

  13. simon Says:

VHIII is going to be needing reconstructive surgery where the sun don’t shine after Brady is done with him on Thursday, I have a bad feeling about Thursday the bucs are going to be part of a recording breaking day however way you look at it. Either we are going to inflict back to back defeat on the patriots (something I can’t remember happening in recent memory) or we are going to get torched by psycho Brady.

  14. Hail2dabucs Says:

You guys , the patsies are a shell of their former selves right now.we can win Thurs ! Go bucs !

  15. Go for the face Says:

Simon- you sound like a Patriots fan masked as a Bucs fan. Go fap some more to your Tom Brady photos nerd.

  16. Rod Munch Says:

Ryan Smith played zero snaps. That’s all you need to know.

As for VH3 getting burned by OBJ. Yeah, well, that’s what happens from time to time against top WRs. I don’t know how Eli didn’t look at the Gikinys tape and just throw it wherever Grimes was not – but whatever trickery Mike Smith had worked.

  17. Pickgrin Says:

Grimes represents what we hope Hargreaves becomes.

Brent looks ageless out there and is playing at a very consistently high level for a 34 year old player.

Let’s hope Grimes follows in Darryl Green’s footsteps and keeps it up for another 4 or 5 years. Long enough to help us win a couple SBs and get himself into the HOF.

  18. Easy Denman Says:

He showed why he’s the best cover corner on this defense yesterday. I was LOLing and ODGAY lobbying for PIs against him.

  19. ManzielMadness Says:

    @PRBucFan

Lol, my bad. Too early in the morning… Need my caffeine

  20. Defense Rules Says:

Brent Grimes was THE biggest difference in the game. Made a huge difference in how our secondary played overall … CBs & Safeties had over 30 tackles yesterday & quite a few passes defensed. Noticing a big difference in how VHIII plays when Grimes is out there with him (VHIII had 9 tackles by himself in the game). Bucs have to re-sign Brent for next year AND use our first pick to draft the best corner available to replace him. We have no choice at this point.

  21. simon Says:

Go for the face – Trust me am a bucs fan through and through I travelled from London England to watch the bucs lose against Kap and the 49ers couple of years ago and am back again later this month watch them against the stinking panthers, you can catch me in section 340 if you want a piece of me am bloke the with the English accent.

  22. I'm tired and 87 is right Says:

Simon true Bucs fans don’t start bashing their team before they even hit the field. Support your team fool. Don’t bother coming to the Panthers game we don’t need ya! Bucs can win this game it starts with believing. Go Bucs!!

  23. Bucamania Says:

Grimes was the difference yesterday. No doubt. Stay healthy!

  24. Sunny Says:

Simon , why would you travel that far and go to 340 , Atleast get better seats

  25. dc_bucfan Says:

“needless” bye? I’m glad the NFL had the good sense to postpone the game…plus Grimes got an additional rest…

  26. NOSBOS Says:

You lames claiming brady about to do this that might wanna check that team out some. They given up over 400 yards in total offense to every opponent this season. They actually suck,”If” Mike Smith gets out of his traditional mind set of play calling and come with heavy dose of nickle and dime coverage we should win this game. They are at this point old man brady or bust. He’s throwing around 40+ times a game. Makes me wonder what kind of youth serum he’s taking.

  27. sorryitriggeredyou Says:

Miko says the plan for him is to retire next year, but she’ll ask him to go another year if he keeps playing like he did.

  28. NJBucsFan Says:

I’d like to see him sign an extension for another 2 years

  29. NOSBOS Says:

My correction they’re giving up 456 yards a game. Worst in the nfl. A lost to the pats at home to me would be a disappointment.

  30. 813bucboi Says:

VHG played solid yesterday….I was at the game….the deep ball that odell caught on him was a result of poor safety help….conte was suppose to be back their be got caught looking at the TE ingram….

honestly the defense played well, except for the pass rush…we had none…giants fans were saying, “damn flowers brought his A game today”….I was like,” nawl, we just don’t have a pass rush”….

grimes played very well doe…GO BUCS!!!

  31. OneBucNut Says:

Love Joe’s MVP reference for #24….as long as you check with GMC first, and you can find GMC in the other team’s backfield, every game, every play. If GMC says #24 is the defense MVP, since it is GMC’s defense, whatever GMC says works for me.

  32. simon Says:

@Sunny – I have to pay for hotel, ticket, food and getting a seat in section 340 is just dandy for me, maybe when travelling across the pond is a cost of bus ride I may think of splashing out on an executive suite!

@I’m tired and 87 is right – sorry to late mate I have bought my ticket you can’t stop me and your homeland security has approved my travel after paying $14 for ESTA…so there!

  33. simon Says:

And PS…while am in your city I will paying a visit to Ybor city can anyone recommend a good cigar shop I didn’t get to visit the last time I was in Tampa.

  34. Bucsfanman Says:

Grimes was definitely a difference-maker. And I agree, the gulf between he and VHII is noticeable. VHIII is young though. He’s got some growing to do as I’m sure Grimes did as a young player.

  35. Howard Cosell Says:

Chucky’s favorite player on the Bucs!
