In Jason Licht, Joe trusts.
Yes, the Bucs need receiver help worse than Joe needs a cold beer on a steamy Florida July Friday afternoon.
And yes, the Cardinals just cut former first-round pick Michael Floyd. Seems he has huge bowel movement ASJ-itis.
Well, whether or not Floyd ends up with the receiver-needy Bucs remains to be seen. But Joe offers this advice to Bucs fans wanting to order shots in case the Bucs sign Floyd:
Trust Bucs AC/DC-loving general manager Licht on this one.
No one, and Joe means no one, will have or be able to obtain better intel on Floyd than Licht. Remember, Licht was the Cardinals director of pro player personnel when the Cardinals drafted him in 2012, Licht was a Cardinals suit for Floyd’s first two seasons in the NFL.
Besides, Cardinals general manager Steve Keim and Licht are best of friends. Additionally, Joe would be shocked if the two, while at the league meetings in Dallas this week, didn’t get together for an adult beverage or two and Joe would be further stunned if Floyd’s name didn’t come up in comfortable conversation.
If somehow Floyd made it to the Bucs on waivers (the Bucs currently have the 22nd slot on the waiver wire) or if Floyd clears waivers, Joe fully trusts Licht’s decision whether to claim him or pass (if claimed, the Bucs would owe Floyd a chunk of his $7.3 million salary for 2016).
Besides, Floyd wouldn’t be able to play until maybe a playoff game. Maybe. Floyd would have to learn Dirk Koetter’s playbook. Those aren’t swallowed overnight.
So as bad as the Bucs need a receiver, it’s hard to justify paying Floyd’s salary for one game in January that right now we don’t know if the Bucs will make the playoffs or not.
Now, signing Floyd as a free agent in the spring? That’s a different story.
At any rate, whatever Licht decides to do with Floyd, Joe fully trusts Licht’s decision on this one, and so should Bucs fans.

I mean after all, you are aren’t just media covering him as part of covering the Bucs, you are also BFF with the guy you are covering in addition to being a business partner with the guy you are covering. So yeah, trust your BFF and business partner and don’t forget to choke down as many of the JBF Jason Licht Kool Ales while you are at it!

Very risky depending on Adam Humphries after that concussion. Love the player, but do you really want to send him going over the middle so much?
Shepherd is a hard worker and a good guy. I would love it if he were the next Doug Baldwin, but I’m not sure thats likely.
Martino was a guy who caught the Chargers off guard. Didn’t find much success against the Saints. Talented, but still a lot of hoping.
Floyd could actually be what the Bucs hoped VJax could be this year. Sadly Vjax just wasn’t himself. However, Floyd could be another big body to help out in the redzone.
Bucs are very lucky with the emergence of Brate.

You need to educate yourself on average success rates of FAs & draft picks.
Then judge Light based on his performance against his peers; instead of judging him in a vacuum of hatred.
He’s easily top 1/3 if not top 10 the last 3 years even with the bad signings.
The majority of FA signings in the league end up performing a lot worse than they did before signing a new deal; and another large % are flat out busts.
Denver has been the best at FA in recent years with Elway getting guys like Talib & Ware at the right time. But even Elway has made some bad moves recently:
-signed sanchez and had players thinking he’s the #1 QB all year then cuts him before the season starts
-signed Okung who’s been a disappointment on one of the worst lines in football
Hell the only good off season FA moves Elway made was just re-signing some of his own players (von Miller & Sanders). And many think that Elway; going into this last off season; was the cream of the crop when it came to genius FA signings.
Criticize if you want I guess – but unless you want the GM fired and have a good argument for why he’s a bottom 1/3 GM compared to all the other teams – then wtf is the point of any of this? You’re not adding anything of value or substance to the conversation. You’re just whining for the sake of it

Both Dallas Buc and Old Bill make a strong case to trust and not to trust Jason Licht. Right now I trust Koetter and Smith to continue to put forth strong game plans with whomever suits up and win games.

What’s wrong with Connor Barth.. was a very good Kicker for us b4 he blew out his Achilles. Hit 3 from 50+ in a game for us. Kickoffs were short which is why Michael Koenen took care of that.

His job is to always hit on more than not. All gms gamble and miss on players but its overlooked on good teams . This is a gamble but what happens if he comes in and plays the panthers game and we dominate with him in the playoffs . Next year he suspended for 2 games at the beginning and come back and we dominate . Yes its a gamble but if it works out our draft board is wide open and we build the back end .

his contract will keep him from getting claimed off waivers, i predict he will be free to sign with whoever he wishes.
the big red flag against him is not (in my eyes and probably not in Licht’s eyes) the recent DUI or the one in college. It is the other thing he has in common with ASJ – questionable love of the game – that probably disqualifies him from consideration here.
Bruce Arians and Steve Keim have no problem taking a chance on guys with past troubles, as long as they feel like football comes first for the person in question. The fact that they gave up on him tells you what you need to know

Good points made by both sides, and I could imagine the same list of hits and misses drawn up for the Patriots, Steelers, Packers, etc. Beyond bringing in players and coaches, GMs (and coaches for that matter) are ultimately judged by their win-loss record, and the Bucs seem to be headed in the right direction during Licht’s brief tenure.

Asj – Licht pick (I wouldn’t have selected him since he was hurt coming out of college, but there was no question he had the talent, just lacked the desire)
Aguayo – Licht pick. Performing much better down the stretch. Hit all his field goals last game to help the Buccs defeat the Saints. Should only get better and more consistent over time. He will get at least another season to prove that he can be a top kicker in this league.
Sweezy – Licht pick. Hard to say what happened there. Whether or not the Buccs didn’t do their due dilligence or sweezy got hurt early on in OTA’s or whatever. Either way, it’s unfortunate, and hopefully a big lesson learned. Ironically his “backup” replacement, Pamphile, has arguably been the best on the line and Licht drafted him in the later rounds.

Floyd is owed $871,000 for the remainder of the season and will be suspended for 2 games next season for this DUI. Last 3 seasons 850, 850 and 1000 yards. Would be good compliment to Evans, but what kind of problems does he have. I am sure Lyght know him and has spoken to Arizona’s GM, but if he could get acclimated to our offense in two weeks that would make our offense click. A true #2 to take coverages from Evans and Humpries.

If the Bucs sign him and plays in that playoff game and we win how big does that salary look then? What if they win the divisional round and he’s playing well what then? What if they win the Championship Game and he plays well is it looking a little more palatable? What if they win the Superbowl and he’s the MVP how worth is it then? Sometimes you have to buy a farm to earn a mansion. I know this is all a bunch of ifs but we need to take chance to sign him if we get the chance

Exactly. The only sensible way to judge a GM in terms of their success in the draft & FA is to compare their success rates to the rest of the league & historical averages.
If there is a better way to objectively judge how well a GM has done in their specific moves I’m all open to it.
W:L record isn’t as easy a methodology to judge a GM on unless you know the GM hired the head coach and controls roster decisions. That only just started this last year.

DallasBuc make it sound like drafting and picking FA is a exact science.
Licht is a pretty humble and grounded guy. Yes some picks will not reach their potential but if he learns from his failure then it’s all good. There were no big splash names we signed this year and look at the production we have from the FA. The guy has learned and it showed.
I didn’t like the Aguayo pick. Still don’t like it but right now they are winning so what’s the point of complaining?
Lich has my full support and I command him to continue to make bold moves if the rationale is there.

DallasBuc again spot on with the Licht points, koetter and jameis are succeeding despite is boneheaded moves, im not including the elephant in the room move, but evaluating the bucs objectively pre draft the bucs needed OL, licht passes on a franchise LT to go w VH3, cmon, corners are all over the 2nd round and later, but franchise LTs dont show up but once in awhile…not to mention batting .200 on FA moves

If the Bucs sign him now they can place the transition tag on him for next year, meaning his salary won’t be over $7 million, which is a bargain compared to VJax. Almost a no loose situation if he doesn’t have real issues.

Now, if you got that key point, feel free to reevaluate the FA signings in light of the fact that only the lowest tier players who have limited opportunities would consider signing for a trip on the NFL Titanic. Ayers, Miko’ s pet signed because of an existing relationship.
Now last point before I dismiss you. The fact the team is winning and jameis winston is emerging as a top flight QB , Free agents are far more likely to consider an offer from the Bucs. Michael Floyd would bring something that even a healthy VJax certainly can’t, as he is a deep threat. He is a big, fast, athletic guy and has shown some real potential when healthy. He has pro bowl caliber talent, and while there will be a little bit of a ramp up in terms of learning the offense – I think I’ll take my chances with him over the scrap heap of talent we have currently.

I say we take a shot with floyd. There’s no way we can make a legit playoff push without another wr. As far as the playbook it should be easy by now to adjust to gameplans and playcalls. Tampa bay has one of the most fundamental playbooks but they execute. Now if we had another big time wr opposite of evans this offense should fire on all cylinders like we all expected it to during last offseason. Sign him if we lose out on some money then oh well we took a small risk for a high reward. Could help doug in the run game too

And as others have alluded to, FAs have the choice of where to go. Tampa has not been a desirable place.

There is so much wrong with this that I don’t know if it’s even worth addressing.
But because it’s so damn easy:
1 – EVERYONE was saying we needed a corner & a pass rusher last year. We had the worst secondary in the NFL in 2015 giving up a 70% completion. Absolute joke considering the teams & QBs we played. Go look at walterfootball or any draft sight and they all projected us taking a corner or DE.
2 – Our O-line was actually one of the strengths of the team in 2015 according to many (including the Joes). We had one of the best rushing offenses in the league and a top 5 offense in yardage with a rookie QB. No way in hell that happens with a bad O-line. Considering 2 of the offensive lineman were rookies and Pamphile was a 2nd year player and we’d have Dotson back; the O-line was not a priority according to almost everyone. Some people did want a LT but it was pretty rare; and it’s still yet to be proven there was a franchise LT available. Tunsil was the only guy graded that high in the 1st round and isn’t playing LT.
3 – Corners are not all over the 2nd round and later. Not sure where you got that idea for the 2016 draft considering these were the only corners who went in the 2nd and would have been available to us:
Mackensie Alexander (has barely played or contributed
Cyrus Jones (having a “nightmare” rookie season according to one article I just read)
James Bradberry – been meh but Panthers secondary been a weakness all year.
None of those guys have been on VHII’s level this year.
4. He’s not batting .200 in FA. More like .600 or better. I am guessing you don’t count Adam Humphries, Cameron Brate, Joe Hawley, Chris Conte, Jaquis Smith, & Jaquis Rodgers type signings because they’re lower profile but they should count. That’s 7 players right there costing us almost nothing that greatly outperformed any expectations and been worth their contracts the last couple years. Add in Robert Ayers, Brent Grimes, Clinton McDonald, & Hey Jude and that’s like 10-11 solid moves. DallasBuc list of bad FA signings only includes 8 total (and Conor Barth was not a bad move imo… so really it should be 7). Do the math and that’s more than ½ of his signings being successful. And that’s assuming all those moves from 2014-2015 weren’t driven by Lovie when there is a ton of evidence to suggest they were

Sounds like the Bucs cut ASJ for pretty close to the same reasons that the Cards cut Floyd. Most of those on JBF seemed to be in favor of that decision. Not sure why we’d want to go through that again. Floyd’s number are pretty decent (averages about 750 yds per season over 5 years), but looks like he’s really slipped this year for some reason (33 receptions in 70 targets). I’m sure that Jason would have the straight skinny on why.

Remember – Joe – the offensive we’re currently using – Is based off Mike Mularkey’s Atlanta Falcons playbook. Concepts Mularkey picked up from his time in Pittsburgh with Ron Erhardt & Chan Gailey.
During Bruce Arians time in Pittsburgh he adapted the same system. That he’s currently using now – in Arizona. So conceptually Floyd would be walking into the same exact offense. Sure the terminology would be different, and of course he would have to get his timing down with Jameis. But if everything else checks out – it will be a solid fit.

Also if I am right we are 22 in the waiver order right now and the teams I worry about ahead of is trying to nab him would be titans, ravens, dolphins and redskins. Of course there are teams lower that have no shot at playoffs but those are the ones I noticed at first glance.

He sure wasn’t anything to get excited about-definitely blew a return (didn’t fumble, thank gawd). Floyd can not possibly learn the playbook before the Cowdung game. GUYS!!!!! calm down. We have Zero need for Floyd at this point in the Season. Hump is coming back and we have won 5 games in a row with No Names, a great QB and a SUFFOCATING Defense. Bringing in a troubled player in week 15 and then having to count on him in the Playoffs seems beyond risky to me.

Everyone that harps on licht for his bad picks doesn’t reconize his good picks. If you went back in the draft two years ago with today’s knowledge kwon would be a first round pick not a fourth. The positive thing i see from licht is he doesn’t let his mistakes haunt him He cuts bait and moves on. Everyone who knows better knows lovie had roster control when hired and licht was his guy to get him his roster This years FA was solid. I am getting so sick of the negative buccaneer fan. I have lived all over the place and have not seen so many negative fans as there are in Tampa. It is disgusting. This man, in three years, has completely and totally change this franchise with the players he has brought in. Of course he has had bad free agent signings and bad draft picks, every single franchise does.
I think these negative pseudo-football fans never actually watch another team play. I think they watch a highlight and think “oh look, that player is awesome. We should have drafted him. Jason sucks.”
When the reality is someone like Gerald McCoy is An elite DT right now and the people you see on the highlight reel are one and done with just the highlight.
Licht has made one big mistake and that was counting on Vincent Jackson needs to hold up. I for one, was on that bandwagon. I was all for re-signing him as most of you were. Of course there are other bad signings over the last couple years but a lot of that was Lovie Smith driven. The way I see it, between draft picks and free agents, if you go 50/50, you’re doing a damn good job. Those of you who think he sucks are ignorant as hell to football operations.

I’ll never get the “Trust in” BS argument. No person, regardless of access or insight is a sure bet to predict the future of a player or players. I’m sure Licht will know what Keim knows, but someone could have had a mole in the Eagles organization in the 80’s when Cris Carter was cut and left him on the street due to his probems at the time too.
Likewise there are a ton of raclaimation projects that never pan out. Anyone remember Ryan Leaf in a Bucs uniform? Good times.

I think acquiring Huff…also tagged with Boozin’ & Cruisin’…was probably the risk/reward pickup for this season. Floyd might be worth a 1 year prove it deal to pair with Evans next year if he gets his mind right. I don’t see the point/upside with literally just over two weeks to go in the regular season.

Also gotta think about if he fits in well with team chemistry. Will he get along with the guys? That has to be top priority.

If the Bucs claim floyd they would only owe him two game checks since Arizona is on the hook for this week.
I think it’s worth it to put in a claim and see if he can help us in our last two regular season games and perhaps beyond.

Nos…….Floyd can’t learn the playbook fast enough to help us right now. No Chem with Jameis. Martino will look better on Gameday right now than Floyd in a Bucs Uni. I understand that if we had Antonio Brown opposite ME13 then we would prolly win the SB but we don’t and won’t so let Jameis run this Chit!!! He is making Lemonade out of lemons right now. Defense is handling their own. Don’t Fix something that Ain’t Broke!!

Even if we win the division it will not satisfy the haters. In the case of Gruden even a super bowl win wasn’t enough.
Our GM has done a fantastic job. Excellent young team ready for a long run IMO.
Go fix that hole in your trailer and watch the gator game you dolts.

Michael Floyd is not a bad dude I’ve seen worse. Over the years compared to some players he’s a saint. Let’s hope he don’t go to the Saints because of our fan base in Tampa. It’s wrong to drink and drive period. Reports said he was at a stop light asleep. No excuses but if he would have pulled off the road then what could have they said. Absolutely nothing! Give the kid a break you don’t hear about him all over the news like some players. We got some weed smoking pistol packing players on the rosters now so y’all need to quit being hypocritical.

How quickly Bucs fans forget the “parade of horribles” the Bucs had at GM prior to Licht. Drafts under Dominic, Allen, and even McKay were far less productive than the three Licht has put on the board. AND, while Licht gets a lot of flack for free agency misses, you have to wonder how many from that first year class were handpicked by Lovie while sitting on the couch in the basement where he should have stayed.
That said, I can’t defend the Aguayo pick and I am a Nole. Like the player, hoping he improves, but can’t justify the pick. I stand by Licht otherwise. Bucs are lucky to have him.

Pretty sure its tough to compare Licht to Mckay drafted 2 Hall of Famers maybe more and also helped in the hiring process of a Hall of Fame coach oh and built the super bowl team

Exactly what you said…repeatedly. If we went off the recent MODEL franchise as the Patriots… I can assure everybody that they have nearly as many misses as us when it comes to draft and free agency. That despite the fact that they are in the great position of only having to draft BPA because they don’t truly have any glaring needs.
