Jameis Watch: The Bucs & The Laundromat

Bucs GM Jason Licht weighs in

Crab-legs-stealing, BB-gun-shooting, obscenity-hollering, Heisman-Trophy-winning, national champion James Winston, the pride of Florida State University, continues to look like a much better quarterback prospect than Mike Glennon and Josh McCown.

It’s Joe’s daily nugget on the Jameis Watch, celebrating the best quarterback to wear No. 5 ever in the state of Florida.

Joe’s sure hoping Jameis Winston didn’t regularly pull some hottie’s damp bras and panties from a dryer, sling them on the laundromat floor, and toss his own wet clothes into that same dryer.

And fingers crossed that Winston didn’t bang furiously on a washing machine that ate his quarters.

Yes, this stuff matters.

Bucs general manager Jason Licht spoke last night on the Buccaneers Radio Network about the quest to find out a potential player’s true character — not matter how much their handlers try to disguise it.

“Their agents teach them how to answer the questions the right way,” Licht said. “You’re constantly battling that trying to figure out a way to ask the questions so they can’t go to their script or their rehearsed answer. So you have to talk to a lot of people in these players’ lives. You have to talk to the equipment guys, the trainers, the high school coaches, people in their hometown.

“You hear the stories in the old days, where a guy would go to the laundromat and, you know, ask the people that work at the laundromat, at the college town [the player] was in, what the kind of person he was. And that still goes on today.

“We’ll do whatever we have to do to find out about the player. Because most misses in the draft and free agency are above the shoulders, not the physical talent.”

Ah, yes, the “above-the-shoulders” analysis. Man, it’s like shooting fish in a barrel figuring out which Bucs 2014 free agents failed in that area.

Licht, however, also emphasized that he’s not looking for “choir boys” and perfect citizens, just decent people who love football and “wouldn’t know how to exist without the game.”

That last line could be a hint the Bucs aren’t that high on Winston, who also is a baseball player with professional ability.

    Winston=criminal =me first player=bust. It’s really a simple thought process.

  2. lightningbuc Says:

I think Licht may find out a little more by visiting the Tallahassee Publix, rather than the laundromat.

  3. Nybucsfan Says:

If I were a Florida State fan I would be embarrassed to have him as my quarterback. The school made it clear what there priorities are. Clearly not higher education.

What’s the difference between a Licht interview and any other job interview?

You still have to work around the canned answers.

    Amen to that.

  6. Skyline Crew for Mariota or Winston Says:

Winston should put up good numbers against a terrible Oregon secondary. If he doesn’t then it won’t look good.

I think this is a shot at Winston and a sign that he wants Mariota. Hopefully Lovie has the same train of thought.

I’m a Gator fan, but that is the most naive statement I’ve ever read. You don’t honestly believe that, do you? You could say the exact same thing for virtually every single big time school in the country, and most of the little ones. These guys aren’t brought here to get a degree. They are brought here to win games and make the schools money. It’s as simple as that, and frankly I’m shocked that any grown person could possibly believe otherwise.

  9. Zam Says:

Mariota is the safe play for them… If you draft Winston and he turds out or plays baseball, you’ll never get a job again. You can roast marshmallows with Mark Dominik.

  12. armchairGM Says:

I don’t know you could look at it the other way around too. Mariota is viewed by most as a choir boy and you could say Jameis does love football. I really don’t think he gave any hints towards which way he may be leaning.

  13. Robert 9 Says:

I have the utmost confidence L & L will swing and miss with the 1st pick.

  14. Jerseybuc Says:

Even his number scares me off. We have been down this road too many times in the past with players who let us down.

  21. Skyline Crew for Mariota or Winston Says:

Andrew’s father, Oliver Luck, was an NFL teammate of Peyton’s dad, Archie Manning. And Oliver told KTAR that their longtime friendship gave Andrew access to Peyton, who told Andrew about his own experience of returning to Tennessee for his senior season in 1997, when he likely would have been the first pick in the draft if he had left school following his junior year.

“Before he made his decision he had a couple of long conversations with Peyton,” Oliver Luck said. “Archie and I played together way back when with the old Houston Oilers, so we’ve known the family, and Peyton’s kind of acted like a mentor to Andrew. So he got advice not just from his old man and his mom, but
some people like Peyton Manning, Eli and others who have gone through it.”

Although Peyton Manning may have just become the NFL’s least popular player among Carolina Panthers fans, it makes sense that the Manning brothers would both advise Luck that things tend to turn out pretty well for highly regarded quarterbacks who decide not to enter the NFL draft early. Luck clearly made a well-informed decision when he chose to put the NFL millions on hold for another year.
    *****************

So what did Manning tell him? That he was going to get injured and not play for a season and get cut and then the Colts would tank and draft him? I doubt that. However, Manning did it when he was in school. Maybe they should tell Winston to do the same.

  22. HawaiianBuc Says:

I’ll be fine with either QB. However, I’m a little scared of Winston, mostly due to the Johnny Football situation. I’m not saying he’s a bust yet, but it is painfully obvious football is yet to be his #1 priority. He just keeps repeating the same mistakes over and over again. Admittedly, I was in favor of us drafting him last year. Despite our 2-14 season, I’m now very glad we didn’t. He’s going to have to be a hall of famed to be worth all the distractions he has caused that organization. No thanks.

I’m not saying Winston is Johnny Football. I actually think they are very different. On the field, Winston is much better. However, they both had off the field question marks. Both tend to say the right things, yet continue to make stupid decisions. If we had the #2 pick, I think Winston is worth the risk. I think he’s that good. However, we have our choice, and I’d go with the safer bet, who I also think will be very good. You just really don’t want to screw up #1.

  23. HawaiianBuc Says:

    @biff barker,

I think you need to re-read what I wrote. There’s a magic word in there that saves me from the one or two examples you can bring up out of hundreds of schools.

  24. Skyline Crew for Mariota or Winston Says:

HAHAHAHA. I just went back and read scouting reports from that year and they had Gabbert going before Luck as the most NFL ready. Man did they get that wrong. Wow. Gabbert was a huge bust.

  25. tamparob Says:

I personally don’t think the ’14 FA misses were due to poor scouting or because of off-field issues (unless the Joes know of some reports that they are keeping quiet). My observation as a long-suffering Bucs fan is that these were coaching failures. If Magiurian or McDaniels or Fasano or Koetter can take castoffs and make them into serviceable linemen then EDS and others should have at least been average performers. Ditto on the D line with the ghost. QB McCown seems to be a great leader, but a below-average QB playing in a poorly coached offense.

  26. Skyline Crew for Mariota or Winston Says:

You can delete the two posts by me about Luck Joe. I have to many tabs open on my computer now.

  27. Ben Says:

What’s the proper way to deal with abandoned clothes when all the dryers are in use? I thought that was how you were supposed to do it.

  28. Snook Says:

It didn’t work out so well the last time the Bucs took a Heisman winning, dual sport athlete from Bessemer, AL….

  29. Newbucsfan!!! Says:

Winston is the quarterback, the sheeple can clamor for Mariota all they want and while denigrating Winston in the process. But everyone knows that the QB for the Bucs is Winston do not be fooled by the sheeple folks.

  30. BucsQcCity Says:

That nugget made the difference for me. Winston is a triple risk threat:
    – off field probable issues
    – Production decline might be a trend
    – He can walk out of the organisation lnowing there might be a baseball career awaiting.

I want Mariotta. Maybe a bit raw but the guy has all the potential in the world.

  31. DB55 Says:

You guys are going to invest 10000 hours into this debate for no good reason. With the first pick in the 2015 draft the TB bucs select defensive lineman …….

  32. buccoon Says:

Is its March 30th 2015 yet? Im a joe fan but im anxious to scan the articles thats will be posted in the near future. I was a fan of mr winston because he won games in thats good for plenty of people involved in the process of winning. Now that the long lost season of filthy garbage footage caught on tape is over im ready to take back all those moments i thought mr winston could be the good for tampa bay im embarrassed in words cant describes how sorry i am, ive realized life is more about winning and being a role model for the citizens of florida in not about judging a player over wins in loses. Withs the first pick in the 2015 draft tampa bay selects marcus mariota..second pick andre davis university of south florida. Third pick defensive end forth pick safety. Fifth pick corner back, sixth pick defensive end seventh pick corner back there it is folks this is how it will look

  33. Erik with Clean Athletics Says:

These comments from Licht definitely make it seem that he’s leaning to Mariota bcuz he clearly has it more together ‘above the shoulders’ compared to Winston. And I think FSU gets beat by 20+ points on thursday.

  34. Aubpierce Says:

Winston 64 tds, 27 ints. For every 2.5 tds he throws an interception. Those numbers will only get worse in the NFL. Trade the first pick and draft as many offensive lineman you can.

  35. Soggy Says:

Lovie was wrong Bucs Football starts now, This stuff is great..

  36. Dan Says:

Buccoon- No way the Bucs draft Davis in the 2nd. That is a homer pick. Davis wont go earlier than the 5th round sorry. If the 2nd pick is anything other than OL, DE or MLB (if Foster leaves of course) then someone needs to be fired.

  37. KJ Says:

Yup – it’s so easy! Just look at interceptions totals! Just like when Dan Marino threw 64 INTs in college – good thing he dropped in the draft because he was such a bust. Err, wait…

  38. Skyline Crew for Mariota or Winston Says:

Winston is no Marino. However, Marino never won a Superbowl. Hell of a QB, but never won a Superbowl. Is that what you want or will you just settle for a winning season?

  39. Dan Says:

Aubpierce- saw this stat on ESPN last night.

Marcus Mariota: 1094 career pass attempts, 12 ints

Winston: 806 pass attempts, 27 ints

  40. Skyline Crew for Mariota or Winston Says:

andre davis university of south florida – NFL Draft Scout has him ranked #35. No thanks. Also, no on a receiver in the 2nd. Gotta go OL. I’m hoping that Peat is there.

  41. Skyline Crew for Mariota or Winston Says:

I don’t think FSU gets blown out on Thursday. Oregon Secondary is awful and is nearly the worst passing defense in the FBS. Winston should have big numbers. If he doesn’t then he doesn’t have the “IT” factor.
    *************************

“Only 12 teams in college football have given up more long pass plays than Oregon. The Ducks have coughed up 131 pass plays of 10-plus yards, 40 plays of 20-plus, 16 plays of 30-plus, eight plays of 40-plus and five plays of 50-plus.

This is a scary proposition against a Florida State offense that ranks No. 8 in the nation in pass plays of 10-plus yards (153). Included are 51 plays of 20-plus yards, 24 of 30-plus, 14 of 40-plus and seven of 50-plus.”

  42. Erik with Clean Athletics Says:

Mariota is a complete player. Those who say he’s just a spread option QB are very wrong. He’s basically a combination of Aaron Rodgers and Kaepernick. He can excel as a pocket passer or as a runner (when necessary) and he has the intelligence and work ethic to become great in the NFL for many years to come. Again, Joe, whywould we pick the #2 QB prospect with the #1 draft pick?!?? That would be completely illogical.

  43. buccoon Says:

Dan andre is another jenkens only difference andre is faster in in can run any route he reminds me of odb. Andre is a beast,,, put him with jackson in evans sims martin mariota asj myers brate with a offensive line.. mariota and the bucs can go undefeated

  44. Skyline Crew for Mariota or Winston Says:

Also, FSU is ranked #123 out of 128 in interceptions with 19 ints. Winston accounts for 17 of those.

  45. buccoon Says:

Skyline Crew for Mariota or Winston; i wonder what they ranked tom brady comming out of collage,

  46. Newbucsfan!!! Says:

Most folks on this site will call Winston a clown, criminal idiot, etc..All the while claiming that Mariota is the second coming of rodgers, manning, brady, staubach, aikman, etc (LOL)

To some Mariota is Cam Newton w/ mannings brain, rodgers arm, and Brady’s clutch gene. If he is all that then there is no debate he is the once in a generation qb that the Bucs and their fans have been looking for. UNFORTUATELY, Mariota is not as big as cam newton, doesn’t have mannings brain, and doesn’t have brady’s clutch gene or rodgers accurate arm. As a matter of fact he needs time to develope those skills. Oh he does have speed though, I guess that makes him the best choice LOLOLOLOLOL

  47. Skyline Crew for Mariota or Winston Says:

He was #9 out of 25.

    Chad Pennington
    Chris Redman
    Marc Bulger
    Tee Martin
    Giovanni Carmazzi
    Todd Husak
    Doug Johnson
    Jarious Jackson
    Tom Brady

  48. bucrightoff Says:

Matt Ryan had 19 INTs his senior season so. Tim Tebow was a 70% passer in college and led the country in passer rating. Even Johnny CFL put up strong looking stats. But stats are pretty meaningless in college because half the games these teams are playing competition at least 3 levels below them. Doesn’t happen in the NFL.

  49. Newbucsfan!!! Says:

    Mariota 1,677 TD’S to 4 INT’S

    Winston 0 TD’S to 14,787 INT’S

That’s it my mind is made up!

  50. Skyline Crew for Mariota or Winston Says:

Winston is a clown and an idiot. Mariota is a smart kid that doesn’t get in to trouble. Nothing wrong with stating facts. Both are good on the football field. Mariota has excelled this year and progressed, while Winston has regressed. Nothing new to see here. Same ol’ same ol’.

  51. Skyline Crew for Mariota or Winston Says:

    You’re special aren’t you Newbucsfan!

  52. bucrightoff Says:

Thing is, Winston’s biggest concern is clearly off the field. Mariota’s is clearly on the field. And don’t say it’s not, if it were every spread QB would be a rousing success instead of most of them being abject failures.

  53. Skyline Crew for Mariota or Winston Says:

    Agreed Bucrightoff.

  54. Skyline Crew for Mariota or Winston Says:

But if Winston wasn’t in trouble off the field we could talk about his on field issues, but you can’t bring them up without them being overshadowed by his off field antics.

  55. LUVMYBUCS Says:

I wonder how Timmy Chang or Colt “Side Arm” Brennan would’ve performed
    in Chip Kelly’s offense.

  56. HawaiianBuc Says:

    @LUVMYBUCS,

I love your knowledge of Hawaii QB’s! Very impressive.

  57. LUVMYBUCS Says:

Remember folks were concerned about Matt Ryan’s interception numbers.
He complied (56TD’s)-(37Ints) while he was the starter for Boston College

  58. Geno714 Says:

Tim Tebow had his head on straight. Still a first round bust because of his physical limitations. Lichts argument isn’t solid. Plenty of guys fail for various reasons. Sometimes it’s bad coaches not building the scheme around their players. Take the guy with the greatest upside. So many busts may as well go for the home run.

Skyline, what exactly are the concerns with Winston’s “antics??!?!?!

Seriously, do you really think he’s going to lift crab legs again once he’s in the league? What other “antics” are there that are concerning? Is saying a naughty word really that big of a concern for you that you would take the lesser talented QB? That’s just asinine

People who are concerned about Winston’s “character” still have the autograph thing clouding their judgement. They still have the lying cleat chasers false accusations clouding their judgements. When you take a look at what we actually 100% know he did, you realize that it’s no cause for concern whatsoever.

I also want to say that the comparisons to the concerns with Manziel are absolute ignorance. Winston has never gotten into trouble for partying. Manziel doesn’t like being a football player, he likes the perks of being a football player. Anyone who questions whether or not Jameis can’t live without the game of football needs to do a little more research. The kid LOVES the game. If he didn’t he’d concentrate on the guaranteed contracts of MLB and be a first round pick there. He loves the game and will win multiple Super Bowls. Mariota will NEVER make it through a 16 game season healthy. And you can book it

  63. Eric Says:

Winston – no losses and National Championship

    Mariota = ????????

Actually, I would be happy with either one. Perhaps these next two games will be the deciding factor. We will certainly see both under the greatest possible pressure.

Winston has already proven what he can do in big games. I cant remember a mistake the guy has made with a game on the line. In fact, he is at his best then.

That would be a refreshingly new trait for a bucs QB.

Lets see if that applies to Mariota. He’s not playing Wyoming on the 1st.

  64. LUVMYBUCS Says:

  67. HawaiianBuc Says:

    @Eric,

I agree with a lot of what you said. I’m totally going to be fine with Winston, even though I’d prefer Mariota (again, I’m admittedly a little biased). However, success in big moments in college doesn’t necessarily translate to the pros. There’s a laundry list of college QB’s that were great under pressure who failed in the pros. I’m not saying Winston will fail (I think he’ll be very good), but I just don’t know how much stock you can really put in that.

Also, there’s this prejudice around these parts about teams and players not from the Southeast. We all know the South, and in particular the SEC, has the best players. However, it’s not like the NFL is completely dominated by SEC players. There’s a bunch of great players from all over the country, including from small schools. In addition, Oregon played a much much tougher schedule than FSU. That’s not even debatable. The PAC 12 is without a doubt the second best conference, and they’re really not that far behind the SEC. I know that’s blasphemy to a lot on this site, but it is true.

  68. HawaiianBuc Says:

Skyline, what exactly are the concerns with Winston’s “antics??!?!?!

    *********************

For about the 6th time I’ll post again, but I’m not doing it anymore as you can look them up yourself.

Nov. 25, 2012 – Winston and a group get in trouble for $4,200 in BB gun damage

Dec. 7, 2012 – Winston is accused of Rape

July 21, 2013 – Winston is accused of entering Burger King and stealing pop

April 29, 2014 – Winston is accused of stealing crab legs

May 20, 2014 – Does not show to code of conduct hearing (claims he didn’t know)

    Sept. 16, 2014 – Yells obscenities

If it was one or two things sure I could let it go, but this is a pattern over years not in one year, but over years. He has issues and needs to mature. The guy needs to grow the Fuk up.

  70. Eric Says:

You might be right Hawaiian, but I remain unconvinced that the Pac-12 is all that.

After Oregon I think FSU would beat those other teams rather easily.

But this upcoming game will show a lot.

Ill be happy as heck with either one of these guys.

“May 20, 2014 – Does not show to code of conduct hearing (claims he didn’t know)”

You sure love to leave out details,

It was Casher and Darby’s COC hearing, not Winston’s. He did not miss his own hearing. I’m sure NFL front offices would be terribly concerned that he chose not to testify re: someone else’s hearing, when any testimony could be used against his still open case.

And, maybe you should report the result of that hearing, neither were charged with watching someone get raped. Kind of telling, don’t you think?

“Dec. 7, 2012 – Winston is accused of Rape”

Summer 2002 – Brian Banks accused of rape.

    “Sept. 16, 2014 – Yells obscenities”

    No comment other than LOL.

  73. Skyline Crew for Mariota or Winston Says:

Love and Warrick you can let Winston be a trouble maker all you want. I don’t want that on my team. He has issues and needs to grow up. I don’t care what Brian Banks did in 2002. I wouldn’t care if Winston had rape charges against him. It is the accumulation of things. Yes, he was asked to come to a conduct hearing for those two, doesn’t really matter who it was for he still didn’t go. I never said he missed his own hearing. Why does he get a pass for doing stupid stuff over and over and over? BECAUSE HE JUST WINS. Only a Florida homer says that crap. Everybody else knows the kid is mental and needs to grow up. I’m sorry, but after this debacle I have no faith in any FSU fan because they are such homers that they can see anything. He could kill somebody and you guys wouldn’t care. He needs to grow up and act like an adult. He is going to be the face of a franchise in the NFL. Look at Manziel he can’t handle it already. He is acting like an idiot still even after all the reports from college. I don’t know why you guys think Winston won’t.

  74. Skyline Crew for Mariota or Winston Says:

    From CBS Sports:

“Boys will be boys. College kids will be college kids. But Winston’s situation doesn’t have that feel. The act has worn thin. His class clown routine demonstrates extremely poor judgment, leading to six different incidents since he enrolled at Florida State that have embarrassed himself, his teammates and what he represents.

Winston jumping on a table and yelling something obscene obviously is immature, and while the school said that act got him suspended for Saturday’s contest — his pattern of poor off-field decision is more troubling.

When the Winston shouting incident became public Tuesday, I texted an NFL scout and told him about it, asking his feedback. He didn’t believe me, saying it must have been a “made up Tweeter rumor,” because there was “no way he is that dumb.” A few hours later, Florida State announced Winston would sit out the first half and the scout sent me a text that read, “That’s the one and only time I’ll let JW make me feel naive.”

Then late Friday night, Florida State upped the suspension to the entire Clemson game. Unprompted, I received another text from that same scout: “I can’t wait to ask Jameis for his 2014 Clemson game tape …”

Winston has apologized for his actions time and time again, but mistakes keep piling up. Can anyone believe what he says?” -CBS sports

    ****************

So obviously scouts care that he continues to do stupid stuff. Like I said only Florida Homers brush this stuff off like it is nothing, but people outside of Florida actually care.

“You guys are going to invest 10000 hours into this debate for no good reason. With the first pick in the 2015 draft the TB bucs select defensive lineman …….”

ROTFLMAO… wait, you could be right… This IS Lovie ‘I never Met a Defensive Player I Didn’t Like’ Smith.

  76. Love and Warrick Dunn Says:

    @Skyline,

I’m sorry for that I don’t take media byline witchhunts, hook, line, and sinker.

I’m also sorry for don’t care about Brian Banks. Being falsely accused of rape is a horrible thing. Worst of all is what it does to real, actual rape victims.

Like I said before, we will find out in about 3-4 years if your panties are needlessly in the bunches that I think they are. Soda in ketchup cups? bb guns? Cursing?

    We will see…..

  77. CreamsicleBananaHammock Says:

Skyline, if there’s a scout out there who would actually remove someone from their draft board bc they said a naughty word, then they won’t be scouts for very long.

  78. CreamsicleBananaHammock Says:

Skyline, absolutely NOTHING on your list shows whether or not Jameis will be a better NFL quarterback than MM. There’s nothing on that list that would cause Jameis to be suspended in the NFL. In fact, there’s more false allegations on your list than real ones. Im surprised you didn’t have points shaving and autographs on there.

  79. Eric Says:

Once Lovie and Licht sit down with the kid, and talk to teammates and classmates and whatnot, they will find he is not at all the person the media has portrayed him to be.

Along with checking out his arm, which is out of this world.

I’m really looking forward to the chucky QB show with Winston. That will be damned interesting.

  80. Skyline Crew for Mariota or Winston Says:

He needs to grow up and stay out of trouble.

  81. Erik with Clean Athletics Says:

Again, everyone, why the heck would we draft the consensus #2 QB prospect with the #1 draft pick?!?? Guaranteed we don’t pick Winston.

  82. HawaiianBuc Says:

    @Eric,

Have to agree with you there, that will be must see TV.

I also agree that when they meet Winston they are going to like him. As a Gator fan, I wanted to not like him, but I struggle doing that. Watching him on interviews, in the locker room, and on the sidelines makes me really like the kid. I know there are a lot that watch the same thing and feel the exact opposite, but those are probably the same people who get their panties in a wad when a player celebrates a good play.

  83. Bucnut2 Says:

Guys terrific debate and great points! My bet we trade down with a team that falls in love with one of these guys.

  84. Aubpierce Says:

No Dan, I didn’t watch ESPN last night. I looked it up a few days ago,but thanks for looking up Mariota’s stats. Forget the QB’s and draft offensive lineman if you want to win,if you don’t you will have an injured QB behind the current line.

  85. David Says:

@ skyline…..there is something we all can do to make ourselves better people. But ur right about his pattern. But also look at the fact that the Clemson game was what, the second or third game this season and all stories since then have been retreads. Soo…maybe he is doing exactly what u said, staying out of trouble. Btw, u need to change your name cause it’s obvious ur not for Winston….

  86. Skyline Crew for Mariota or Winston Says:

    @David,

That is a false assumption to say I’m not for Winston. I like the kid. He is a great football player coming out of an FSU system. I don’t like his off field crap and I don’t like that Nole Homers let him get away with so much crap. If you were a boss at a job and you had an employee who continually did stuff that brought attention to him and got in trouble are you just going to sweep it under the rug and be like “oh he is just a kid being a kid”. No, you would do something about it and that kid would probably not be there.

Winston is smart on the field, it is stupidity off the field that gets me. I don’t want a Manziel on our team. He still hasn’t grown up. Now, you are right that he hasn’t gotten in trouble since and let’s hope that he stays out of trouble.

With that being said my name does say a lot though. I would rather have Mariota than Winston based off of football play. Now if we had the #2 pick, I would know that Mariota is going #1 overall and we would get Winston. I’m fine with that because I think he will be better than both QBs that we have. However, he has some footwork and throwing mechanics to work on before he will be ready for the NFL. Same for Mariota, he will have to work on his under center play during practice not just after practice. This is a reason I think we need Glennon to stay and play next year while the rookie gets prepared and can adjust to the NFL, while learning the playbook.

  87. Dreambig Says:

I can’t wait to see the game tomorrow. We get to see both QBs compete in a high stakes game. As an FSU fan, Winston certainly has to make you shake your head but the media has been a bit extreme in their coverage of the stupid things he has done. Winston was very young when he was thrust into the national spotlight and he clearly could have handled it better. The big risk here is that when given a huge contract, the maturation process stops and he continues to act like a juvenile. Even if that does happen, that does not necessarily preclude having a successful NFL career, it just makes him an ass and will get him talked about every week. He comes with many pros and cons.
Cons: Demonstrated lack of maturity, some terrible 1st half play this year
Pros: Extremely good with the game on the line, passionate team mate, tough mental make up with high desire to win.

For his bad first halves this year you can factor in that, he had to deal with a terrible Oline and no running game, he was also playing with a tough ankle injury for 4 games or so but his carelessness with the ball is concerning.
On the plus side, he did not loose for two regular seasons in college and with the game on the line, there is really no one better. He doesn’t panic regardless of pressure, and is deadly when he needs to be. You can’t coach that, you either have it or you don’t.

I don’t know much about Mariota, but it will be great to see the two of them dual it out!

  88. Skyline Crew for Mariota or Winston Says:

Terrible Running game? Cook carried the team part of the time.

  89. KJ Says:

Waaaaaahhh I want Marcus Mariota because he’s a nice guy! I only want nice people on my team! You go ahead and take your nice guy and I’ll take the fierce competitor who wants to win at all cost. Give me Jameis (never lost), Kobe, MJ, Brady, Big Ben, etc.

And to answer an earlier question about Dan Marino, I would have killed to have Dan Marino QBing the Bucs during his tenure. So he didn’t win a Super Bowl – is that the be all end all? Does that mean Trent Dilfer is better than Marino? Joe Flacco? That’s just a stupid argument. Marino was a winner. I see a lot of Marino in Jameis.

Mariota is (yet another) flash in the pan system QB who will flame out in the NFL like Manziel (he will), Tebow, RG III, Kapernick, etc.
