Former Bucs defensive lineman and recent Bucs coaching intern Steve White takes his beloved team over his knee for its dismal play.

Former Bucs defensive end and 2014 Bucs coaching intern Steve White takes his beloved team over his knee for its dismal play

Boy, oh boy, Joe doesn’t know where to start with this. At least the competent, candid analysis is refreshing.

Former Bucs defensive end Steve White knows something about the Tampa-2. He spent each of his Bucs seasons under Father Dungy. Even more, White was a coaching intern with the Bucs this past spring.

He knows full well the ins and outs of what goes on within the walls of One Buc Palace.

White bleeds pewter and red but he doesn’t let those colors cloud his vision. In a very long piece for SB Nation, White joins the chorus of his former teammates in wondering what the hell is going on with the Bucs.

White pulled no punches in a very detailed (with photos for reference) wood-shedding of the team he loves. Here is an excerpt on his take on the beatdown by the Crows:

Dane Fletcher was awful. Because he kept screwing up the Tampa 2 and not getting deep down the middle of the field, the Bucs decided to sub Lansanah in for him on nickel in the previous game against the Saints. Lansanah actually did pretty well that week, but then last Sunday, he had a total brain fart. Yep, that’s him with the red circle. The guy you see running past him on this screen shot? That’s Kamar Aiken right before he catches the first touchdown of his career right up the middle of the field.

Lansanah was dropping with Aiken initially and all was well. Then, out of the blue, Lansanah just decided to turn away from Aiken and settle at around the 10-yard line.

What. The. F@ck?!?!

Fletcher was doing that exact same kind of sh!t, which is why they put Lansanah in the lineup. Then he turns around and does the same sh!t? If everybody is making the same stupid mistake, maybe somebody ain’t teaching it worth a damn.

Again, that’s just a small piece of what White banged out on his keyboard. It’s really, really worth your time to go through. Grab a beer and enjoy.

The great thing about this piece by White, he uses screenshots of game film to illustrate who is screwing up and why. Trust Joe, White used a lot of screenshots because just about everybody played like their head was anywhere but in the game.

Completely agree, I read this article a few hours ago and loved every bit of it. Maybe the Bucs should get him in there for more than just a coaching intern?

  2. billy buckaroo Says:

The eye in the sky don’t lie

  3. RastaMon Says:

Oh..boy…I bet he is PIZZZZZED…I listened to him on the radio last weekend…….Bucs…giving the Ravens a …multiple times…a Buccaneer BEATDOWN !! oh yeah SW is pissed…so am I am !….used to watch him pre…pre game warm ups in the s end zone…head phones on doing his pysche streches

  4. lightningbuc Says:

Sounds like he’s calling out Hardy Nickerson!

  5. RastaMon Says:

“White joins the chorus of his former teammates in wondering what the hell is going on with the Bucs”……..Lovie is a fraud !…a high character man …knowledgable in all the X’s and O’s……leadership…from the TOP of the tree……well what you see is what you’ll be gett’n !The players and fans…especially the paying fans have been betrayed……..Lovie should resign and tell the Glazers they don’t owe him any more money !!

  6. Buccfan37 Says:

Flacco is a good QB. Leave it to the Bucs to pad his stats. White breaks down the mental mistakes very well. Since it’s so repetitive, I don’t know how you turn it around with these players.

  7. BucFanInArkansas Says:

In the immortal words of Vince Lombardi, “WHAT THE HELL IS GOIN’ ON OUT THERE??!!”

  8. BucBob1 Says:

    @lightingbuc
Agreed! I’ve been calling out the non existent, Hardy Nickerson for two days now!

  9. ElioT Says:

White is awesome. Nobody breaks down the film like this guy. You never even hear Booger break down the tape.

WHY does Steve White not have a full time job in the media????

JOES!!! – Why don’t you guys bring him on board and have him do this for every game?

    Go Sucs!

  10. BucFanInArkansas Says:

For me, one of the most telling quotes comes near the very end of White’s outstanding post:

“I’m disgusted because if guys would ever play the defense the way it’s supposed to be played — which isn’t all that hard, by the way — this Bucs team has enough talent to be dominant, even with the lesser-talented guys pressed into playing time because of injuries.”

White has probably forgotten more football knowledge than I’ll ever possess, so I have to grant that he’s probably right. And if so, WHY AREN’T THESE GUYS PLAYING THE DEFENSE THE WAY IT’S SUPPOSED TO BE PLAYED?

  11. Andrew 1 Says:

Yep, good stuff. Why our linebackers are so afraid of getting to deep in coverage is beyond me. To eager to make a play underneath maybe? idk.

Also, anyone who found Mr. White’s stuff interesting might also want read Bowen’s take on Lovie’s defense. Its a little dated, but still good stuff. would post the link but. just Google Lovie Smith’s defense.

  12. Max Says:

Love Steve White, he keeps it real!

I mean every single article on this site draws idiotic comments from some of you people…

First of all, you are not an expert on “Lovie Smith” just because you heard one of his interviews and decided he was an “empty suit”

Second, Lovie Smith knows more about football (X’s and O’s) than any “FAN” posting on this forum…

Third, Let’s stop pretending like your experts. I know your all looking for some outlet to try and prove that you think you know something, but the truth IS, you dont know sh!t!

I’m with you, i’m frustrated at how the team is playing, but i’m not gonna sit here and say Lovie Smith is a bad coach.(Because I know that’s stupid) He would outcoach and b!tchslap everyone posting on this forum!

Yes, you do have a right to come on here and whine and cry all day, but you also have the right to SHUT THE F!@$ UP!

  16. Zam Says:

I never really understand how you can fire someone over being arrested. What if he didn’t do anything wrong but hit on a mean cop’s girl?

Odds are he’s guilty, but shouldn’t we wait until a person is convicted?

  17. Buc1987 Says:

Yep I have Hawaiian Buc to thank for steering me onto Steve’s site last season. The dude breaks things down simple and clear.

or As Lovie would say “simple as that”.

  18. Buc1987 Says:

    OneIdiot on JBF!

  19. mac Says:

I read White’s article and it is a must read if you want to fully understand why this team is losing so badly… It’s simple, there is at least one (most of the time more) missed assignments by players on every play… Against a solid team like Baltimore you will get destroyed if you play like that and we did… It’s an honest and scathing review of the whole mess this team currently is…

  20. Chef Paul Says:

This might be the best thing that could happen during this by week. Former players calling out man hood, intelligence, and coaching.

If getting called out on all that don’t light a GAWD DAMN fire under your ass, then nothing will.

It’s time these guys quit feeling embarrassed and embarrassing us!!

  21. mac Says:

Both players and coaches are to blame…

    Thank You…Mrs Smith!

  23. Buc1987 Says:

Guess what OneIdiot…we’ll be back here again tomorrow to do it again. We’ll also be here long after Lovie is gone from Tampa if that becomes the case. We were here before him and we’ll be here after him.

Not one person on this team is bigger than The Tampa Bay Buccaneers and that includes Lovie Smith.

I care about the Bucs. I’m not here to protect your precious Lovie Smith, that’s your job. Now go kiss your Lovie Smith poster and have a good night.

  24. OB Says:

    Joe

Is it the coaching or the players or some of both on almost every play?

    Can Lovie fix it?

What are your thoughts on this with the bye week?

  25. lightningbuc Says:

OneLovesLovie posts the same thing on every article. Ridiculing anyone who dares say anything negative about his boyfriend Lovie. We get it – you love Lovie and you hate those of us who see him for the buffoon he really is.

  26. Buccfan37 Says:

    Bucs1987… Nice slap back!

  27. SteveK Says:

Lovie’s going to get it right, just wait. We are undoing the level of suckage from the Dom era.

  28. Buc-O's 82 Says:

The old guard Bucs need to stay on these players asses. The players on this team now could give a rats ass on what we say, but when the old guard talk, they damn well better listen.

  29. SteveK Says:

Agreed, with Warren Sapp “vomiting” and Derrick Brooks “angry”, all we need is for Ronde and Lynch to chime in.

The blowouts are sad, especially if our team is really giving it their all.

  30. Buc1987 Says:

Buccfan37….that WAS toned down ya know…I thought of many harsher ways to approach it…then let up.

  31. SteveK Says:

    1987,

I can’t wait for the Vikings game in two weeks. A lot, and I mean A LOT, of fans clamored for Teddy Bridgewater. Let’s see how he does in comparison to Glennon.

We’ve been shredded by two backup QBs. How does this defense do, coming of a bye week, against Teddy and crew?

  32. BucfaninMi Says:

Get that man a whistle please!

  33. Buc1987 Says:

@Joe…I apologize for even striking back when I should of just ignored him. I’ll tell ya this though. If it continues things may get vulgar in here. The stuff I typed first then erased probably would have pissed you off.

“And I will strike down upon thee with great vengeance and furious anger those who attempt to poison and destroy My brothers.” Jules Winnfield – Pulp Fiction.

  34. Buc Fan #237 Says:

I love how Steve White can cuss on his blog. That’s raw… and refreshing believe it or not.

Hey Joe… Guess what? Your website reached national level today. Your article about Derrick Brooks being angry got picked up by Bucsnation today. Then Yahoo Sports picked up that feed and gave you cred for the article.

I was surfing Yahoo’s home page, and sure enough, their sports page was referencing your website, but gave the link to Bucsnation. LOL

You made it to the big leagues Joe.

  35. Architek Says:

    One Love-
I hope that post made you feel better because it surely made me feel better.

I now know I’m not the most stupid or moronic person on the planet, that sir is you.

I also know now that you’re probably a suburban dweller and actually have a life; you’re just out of your element.

Stay away from here if the posts are too passionate – Jack Arse

  36. Architek Says:

Joes marketing is really pushing their brand of reporting on the Bucs to national credibility- it’s been a long time coming and it’s well deserved.

I feel like we are stakeholders and have played a role in Joe(s) success and rise to prominence.

  37. Buc1987 Says:

Buc Fan #237…BEST Bucs site on the net, my man.. Best site!

Here’s to making it bigger and bigger Joes.

Aaaaand another shot of Jack goes down. Woooooooo that was good!

  38. Buc1987 Says:

The Joes need their OWN radio show. If they have the time.

How can we get this done Joe? What can WE do to help you guys get your own radio show all by yourselves. That would be like frosted flakes…GREAT!

  39. abdominal snowman Says:

I agree to an extent with one love, it is getting increasingly difficult for me to read the comment section of the articles. So much ignorance and crying is hard to stomach. I mean anyone who types an experienced head coach be fired after 6 games is just plain crazy. It is not wrong to expect more from a team you’re passionate about but some of you think you could do the job better yourselves. Let it all play out before you hit the streets with pitchforks and torches in hand.

  40. PhillyBuc Says:

OneLove, did your Mommy forget to password protect her laptop again. All that talk about b!tchslapping….you must be a Ray Rice fan?

  41. Buc1987 Says:

abdominal snowman ….here’s the problem with that theory. OneIdiot singles out certain fans and insults them. You may agree with what he said in this thread, but he insults people for less than what you just mentioned in other threads.

This thread he’s talking about you, me, and everyone on this site. He groups everyone together. This isn’t the first time either.

It’s very simple JUST DON’T read the comment section if it bothers you so much.
The same goes for you as well seeing how you agree.

  42. Architek Says:

“It’s very simple JUST DON’T read the comment section if it bothers you so much.
The same goes for you as well seeing how you agree.”

Or simply don’t come to this forum—

  43. abdominal snowman Says:

I will continue to search for valuable insight and opinions which can be I’ll found in the comments sprinkled among the nonsense. I enjoy this website more than any other and come here 20+ times a day. I’m grateful I found this site about 3 or 4 years ago. I remember Thomas and his crp he’d spew and people calling GMC a bust. I’ve also seen people regret laying judgement prematurely and I believe there’s too much of that going on lately. This is my team for life, I’ve invested time, money, and buckets of sweat into my team. With that being said I won’t be going anywhere my friend and fellow buc fan.

Pleasure would be nothing without pain and all Bucs fans know that pain. I believe we will turn a corner andr return to relevancy, and yesyes I believe Lovie will be the leader of that turnaround.

  44. RealityCheck Says:

LOL @ OneLove – That dude is such a troll.

  45. Buc1987 Says:

Damn it’s late. I just wanted to add. I still PROUDLY wear my Bucs gear to Publix when I go shopping. I put it on, on purpose. Just as I wore my Vinny jersey to high school in 87. Nothing can deter my love for this team. Not a damn thing. That’s what I mean when I say not one person on this team is bigger than The Tampa Bay Buccaneers. Yes I’m STILL proud. Are you?

  46. abdominal snowman Says:

True that 87, after the first blowout vs the falcons when the brown paper bags came out I still proudly wore my bucs clothes everywhere. I say nice shirt to everyone I see with bucs gear and who still supports the team I love.

Let us not sesperate for differences in opinion but stand united as true bucs fans who bleed pewter and !red.
I couldn’t agree more than the last two sentences of that statement. That’s why I will stand tall before every game with hope and say GO BUCS!!!

  47. lamarcus Says:

Yep! Im proud of my bucs…… thats bleeding pewter! I still think White is a joke and piece of shtttt! Smh! If he such a genius then why ur u not coaching???? The scores is this obvious. It doesnt matter if u lose by a point. A lose is lose. Joe, y u have these Buc rejects like King and White and that studio clown Beckles even on the website cuz they are H.aving A.nger T.owards E.veryone R.eaching S.uccess. Haters. Shame on these buc traitors. When we win I seem not to hear a peep out them. Ship that negativity out of town and lets play ball

  48. lamarcus Says:

And no…. he is not a trusted analyst. Not a former nfl player w 6 yrs under his belt who finished w 72 tackles 11.5 sacks…. i trust Lovie more cuz he is PROVEN coach!

  49. Lamarcus Says:

Head coach > intern coach. Nuff said

  50. K_bassuka Says:

They need to put David at MLB or a better cover LB there. Fletcher goes for the play action every single time, the others don’t cover the middle of the field well… Having faster safeties will help as well…

  51. Barry Says:

Yea, White blames it on the only white player on the field. Didn’t hear this chump say the front 4 (black players) suck ass. Didn’t hear him say anything about Bucs DBs (black players) not with in 10 yards of any receivers. Didn’t hear him say sh it about the black HC or black OC. F&%k White and the rest of the old Buc players. Go away White, Go away Brooks, Go away Sapp. You people stop living in the past. Do away with the Tampa 2 and stop trying to catch Lightning in a bottle twice.

  52. Jim Walker Says:

I wonder if White banged that out on his keyboard like he did his step-son Kendrick Morris.

  53. PFUDOR Says:

Steve White picked the Bucs to beat the Steelers when NO ONE else
    in the entire world did.
Steve White may have the best insight into the team of any writer in
    the planet.

@ One Love and Jim Walker:
My vag hurts a little too so I can relate to your feelings.

  54. Jim Walker Says:

    @ Pfudor

Trust me that your vag does not hurt as much as Queena Vuong did, or the 60 scars on the back of Kendrick Morris from the beatings from his father Steve White.

  55. MGM4Life Says:

    More Schiano….less cowbell.

  56. ddneast Says:

Excellent piece by White, I just wish he would cut out the real salty language. I understand he is writing for the common man, but a little more decorum would display a little more education. There are better ways to express your feelings more eloquently when you are writing than to continually drop f bombs and s bombs.
Still a good piece and should shut up all these whiners and morons who complain about the Tampa 2. But It won’t.
I used to think last year the dense was running so many schemes the players were to confused to know what exactly they were supposed to be doing.
I now see I was wrong. They aren’t confused, they are just stupid.

  57. Lamarcus Says:

    True^^^^

  58. TAC Says:

Jim Walker will hopefully find out what the definition of libel is with his possibly defaming written statements.

“At a hearing in June 2007, an assistant attorney general asked that both children be placed with White, who offered to take them in to keep them together.

“We feel that that is an appropriate safe placement, in that, it is in the best interest of the children,” said Assistant Attorney General Jill Adams.”

  59. MTM Says:

Steve White analysis is great. It sounds like Lovie doesn’t have the right defensive personnel at this time. I think Steve would take a position with the Bucs tomorrow if it was offered.
@ Onelove- no one on this site claims to be an expert. So go back to Words with Friends and piss off while your at it!

  60. C. Alaka Says:

this was the best link you probably ever shared on here Joe! I read everything you post & this was very educational not only to myself but those ppl who just talk w/o knowing much. This clearly shows that the Tampa 2 D isn’t outdated but that simple D isn’t as simple as it seems to be. Ppl aren’t getting it for some reason, when that happens you have to point to coaching. Then again it’s not like they’re asking them to learn the version of the West Coast Offense on D! IT’S VERY SIMPLE & THEY ARE F**KING up! I can’t say it’s really one thing, this time does need time, coaches do need to get better in their method & the Bucs do need better players. Mmm or at least players that’s gonna follow coaching, if that makes him a better player then so be it

  61. Jim Walker Says:

@TAC Yeah, I guess DeShaney v. Winnebago County keeps people like Assistant Attorney General Jill Adams safe. White is a scumbag, let him sue me if he wants. I would love to go to court with him.

  62. TAC Says:

You’re not anonymous on here, Joe protects some by taking responsibility and removing posts.

What you’re posting has been through the courts, and are lies whether he is a scumbag in your opinion or not.

If you’re looking for perfect people to follow in sport, and writing, maybe chess is for you, or checkers in the mirror, but I doubt there is perfection there either.
