Offense All About “Collective Effort”

September 24th, 2014

The Bucs offense will take a page from Vladimir Lenin in the post-Jeff Tedford era.

De facto Bucs offensive coordinator Marcus Arroyo wanted to make it clear to all Bucs followers out there: The offense, for better or worse this season, will dabble in Leninism. It is all about the collective, not the individual.

Arroyo (nee: Bucs quarterback coach 2014), has been foisted to spokesman of the offense in the absence of Jeff Tedford, though he insisted the offense will be run by a “collective effort” twice during the first two questions of today’s weekly coordinator news conference.

Somewhere, Vladimir Lenin is smiling.

Arroyo was insistent that while he will call plays, he does not have final say on what plays are called. He hinted that, as head coach, Lovie Smith has veto power if not direct influence.

Another interesting note from Arroyo’s presser, Joe asked since additional responsibilities means less time directly working with quarterbacks, will anyone on the Bucs staff fill that void with the one-on-one teaching of the signal-callers.

Arroyo said, no.

I wonder what the players think about that?

  2. StPeteBucsFan Says:

This mirrors what I posted on the last thread.

We know that MG8 is not Drew Brees or Andrew Luck. That’s not the end of the world. IF MG8 can reach competency of the level of Brad Johnson then we’re on the way. It’s going to take two years for Lovie to create a defense out of the joke we’re currently trotting on the field. By then if Glennon is as good as Johnson he will have plenty of experience. Football is still a TEAM (COLLECTIVE) sport.

Heck…freaking Trent Dilfer has a Super Bowl ring! We do not have to set the bar for Glennon at the Luck/Brees or even Matty Ice or Newton level. He just has to perform like a professional QB IF the “collective” effort around him doesn’t suck as it currently does.

Going into the first game the TE coach…Embree ,sp, said something similar……a recipe for disaster….built in indiscision…built in second guessing..built in not being secure enough to speak one mind when the concensus trend has a bias against your gutt…this is a huge cluster duck !…like a kidde car at an amusment park with steering wheels that don’t really control anything….I have a video…oh wait….bat and ball went home

  4. lightningbuc Says:

How the hell can there be a veto when there are only 25 seconds in between some plays? Send in the clowns!

  5. AnotherJ Says:

This dude learning his job on the fly, The offense is screwed!

  6. Zam Says:

Arroyo could be great but sounds like we’ll not know at least this season.

  7. Captain Stagger Says:

Either fire Lovie and hire Bevell or Roman, or hire Chud and let him do with Mariota, what he did with Newton.

  8. DallasBuc Says:

Does this really make a difference anymore? Only question that remains is can this hapless team find at least one single with this season?

  9. Buc1987 Says:

I’m telling ya they need to trot Robert9 and his Madden 2015 playbook.

  10. Harry Says:

What a disaster of a season. There is no need for “veto power”, just run, run, run, punt… The Dunkaneers were a figment of our imagination; has anyone seen one jump-ball pass? Our D last year was better under Schiano – he got it ranked #16 and our turnover margin was very good. We don’t do anything well right now.

I have rooted for the Bucs for so long, over 2 decades, that I really don’t know what else to do… BUT I am looking.

I was watching “The Replacements” the other night and I was struck by a line in the movie. As the team is walking off he field at halftime, a reporter approaches the Coach (Gene Hackman) and asks him what it will take to get his team (they were losing badly in the first half) back in the game in the second half, and the Coach replies “Heart! Miles and miles of heart!”…..I was suddenly struck by the fact that “heart” is exactly what the BUCS have been missing this year! In the first two games, it was like home field advantage meant nothing! They didn’t get mean and say “Hell no! We ain’t letting backup QB’s march down our field and score!”. Last week in Atlanta, it was like they just rolled over and accepted the ass whooping that the Falcons gave them without any pride or trying to fight back! Then I remembered from “Hard Knocks” this year, Mile Smoth saying in episode 1, that he didn’t think the Falcons showed enough heart and toughness last year, they weren’t nasty enough and let other teams walk all over them! Kinda like how Lovie Smith has let other teams treat us this year! The BUCS may lack talent in several areas, but if they show some heart and some toughness, they can avoid embarassments like last week! MILES AND MILES OF HEART!!!!!!

  12. Hawk Says:

I agree with what StPeteBucsFan said. BTW, Brad Johnson’s nickname (from other QBs and coaches) was ‘Checkdown Charlie’.
And adding to what StPeteBucsFan said, bringing in another OC isn’t going to help for several weeks, or maybe a whole month. The players have had OTAs, McCown’s Classes, and preseason, and started the first game with only 80% of the playbook learned. Why would anyone believe that a new OC would learn it any faster? And that is assuming they get another OC with the same offensive philosophy. Let Arroyo have his moment (he may turn into a decent OC) and bring in a QB coach. As with the playing of Glennon, they have nothing to lose and a lot to gain.
My biggest fear with the hiring of Lovie (and confirmed in this article) is that he will be a Dungy clone. It wouldn’t matter if he hired Jon Gruden, as OC, he would still insist on run, run, short pass, punt for field position.

  13. Flmike Says:

I’ve been saying this from the moment they hired the moron, Welcome to the NFL circa 1999…Lovie has no clue how to win in today’s NFL, the game passed him by, not while he was home for a season, it passed him by while he was still coaching the Bears….

  14. biff barker Says:

All this means is that Lovie is really calling the shots on offense.

Hell will get hotter 13 weeks in a row.

  15. MGMob Exterminator Says:

So our standards for our franchise QB have dropped down to Brad Johnson type. Glennon’s ceiling is that type of a QB, but you don’t win many games with Brad Johnson types anymore. One Brad Johnson type QB is Matt Cassell. Even mediocre QBs like Flacco and Dalton are explosive at times when the situation demands them to be. Cassell is always going to be a fringe starter because he can never elevate his play if the team wants him to.

  16. ddneast Says:

Hawk is another brainless idiot and from now on when one of u clowns saw something terribly wrong and stupid, u r going to be called out on it.
If you ever heard Gruden speak about Johnson, he said he and his teammates always refered to Johnson as “The Bull.”
Now in regards to our new OC, a radio station looked up his stats as far as his past college record and to say they were terrible would be an understatement.
    We are in trouble.

  17. chef paul Says:

Just like Schiano and Sully. Lovie won’t trust Arroyo as far as he can throw him. I use to like conservative coaches, but these last two are making me hate them.

Lovie needs to just let him do his new job. If we lose who cares. Its the norm around here anymore.

  18. MR. T Says:

If we get another game with poor offensive play calling we need to bring in a vet OC ASAP and give him free reign to see what can be salvaged this year. As for Lenin, I doubt he’s doing much smiling where he is now.

  19. SAMCRO Says:

“We are Borg. You Will be Assimilated. Resistance is Futile”

  20. Hawk Says:

Speaking of brainless idiots, apparently someone also can’t read.
    Per Wikipedia
” Former teammate Sean Salisbury said that despite having big, strong arms and a great deep ball, Brad always played it safe and went for the fast and easy completion which earned him the nickname “Checkdown Charlie” among friends”
This wasn’t even hard to find. Call yourself out. SMH

  21. sho nuff Says:

this is like bad parenting…the players wont have any respect for aroyyo with this system

  22. nate Says:

Joe wouldnt you agree if glennon is a worse qb this year compared to last year and given all the new weapons..also mccown looking like a high school qb..its time to fire marcus arroyo..

  23. Joe Says:

Joe wouldnt you agree if glennon is a worse qb this year compared to last year and given all the new weapons..also mccown looking like a high school qb..its time to fire marcus arroyo

Gonna guess whoever Lovie brings in for offensive coordinator next year will get to hire his quarterback coach which may or may not include Arroyo.

  24. ddneast Says:

We’ll hawk, I can’t remember when Sean Salisbury steak was ever on this team and if he was, it wasn’t for a very long time. You had to find that on no less a sports book as Wipekidia. Never heard anyone else on that team refer to Johnson in such a manner. Also, one player you cited is singular, not plural.
Sean Salisbury. Now there is a credible source. LOL. You reaffirmed my belief in your stupidity.

  25. ddneast Says:

I’m an old man so it took me awhile to remember when Super Bowl winning QB Brad Johnson and never was Sean Salisbury steak were teammates.
Then it came to me. Minnesota, where Johnson started his career. LOL.
You had to go all the way back then to find someone say something negative about Johnson.
You really are a piece of work.
You really must spend all day in your room posting on blogs and being an annoying little troll.

  26. Hawk Says:

You really aught to make sure that you are smarter than the “idiots” before you spout off. Or learn to say “I could be wrong”. The QUOTE was “… “Checkdown Charlie” among friends”. Did you notice the ‘s’ at the end of friends? That indicates plural. Certainly, I would agree that he could have more than one nickname, AND I didn’t say it was a negative. That was you. Brad had a long and successful career, so whatever his ‘type’ was, it was better than most.
What difference does it make when he got the nickname? Your life must be awfully empty if you have time to complain about an ACCURATE statement.
    Go back under your bridge.
