Falcons “Cannot Rush The Passer”

There should be plenty of time to target Vincent Jackson and Mike Evans deep tomorrow night

The sackless Atlanta defensive line is so miserable, Josh McCown absolutely has to be successful on Thursday night, when he won’t be under pressure.

That’s the word from NFL Network analyst and former Texans and Redskins general manager Charley Casserly.

You read that correctly; the Falcons are sackless, not one sack in 2014, not for any member of its defense.

Speaking on WDAE-AM 620 this morning, Casserly said that stat is no surprise or fluke because the Falcons “cannot rush the passer.”

Casserly said the Buccaneers offensive line remains weak, even though it’s performing better. And he asserted that if McCown can’t have success against Atlanta and find his big targets, then a move to Mike Glennon is warranted.

Yes, the Mike Glennon Mob is growing.

Neither team can rush the passer so it could be a wide open game Thursday. Or Lovie will run it 40 times to milk to clock to keep it away from Atlanta. Whichever.

  2. RastaMon Says:

So …does this mean McClown throwing more passes is a good thing….

  3. DallasBuc Says:

    Falcons can’t rush the passer?…
Bucs can’t win a football game.

  4. gatrbuc17 Says:

So by the very title to this article, we and the Falcons have something in common

  5. Buccfan37 Says:

Nobody has made any predictions for tomorrow nights game yet. OK, I’ll stick my toes in the water and say zero interceptions from McCown.

  6. robert9 Says:

I’m more worried their DB/LB’s can catch one or two of the multiple backfooted floaters mcclown lobs up each gamne.

  7. buc4lyfe Says:

This is it no more excuses after this game win or lose. My idea I’d there is nothing to keep either of these teams from putting up big passing yards. Time to find out if jm is the guy, if the o line is really improving. Even if we win if JM doesn’t put up 250+ yards then he’s not the guy, if we allow a sack to their d line this is going to be a rebuilding year despite what lovie thinks. So far the only difference between lovie and schiano is no screams the other doesn’t, they both kinda handcuffed the offense

  8. B Says:

I’m flying in to Atlanta for this game here’s to hoping I see some fight in these bucs!

  9. Hawaiian Buc Says:

One thing that’s been driving me almost as crazy as McCown’s stupid decisions is his apparent fear to throw the ball deep. In two games and all the preseason games, I don’t recall him throwing a pass over 20 yards. And it’s not like we don’t have the personnel! We have 2 guys that are excellent deep ball threats. What’s the problem with just throwing the ball up there every now and then? If anything, it will keep the defense honest. Vincent has been running around wide arse open for 2 games, and he keeps checking it down for 2 yard gains. Makes no sense. If he’s going to be scared to throw the ball down the field, consider me the newest member of the Glennon mob.

  10. Skyline Crew Says:

We might not either. GMC is possibly out and Foster has a dislocated shoulder from Sunday. Who else is there?

  11. DallasBuc Says:

Hawaiian- agree completely. I am fed up with the excuses for why the job is not getting done at the QB position. Doubt Glennon performs much better but I don’t want to sit around all season waiting for McCown to be something he has never been before in his career: GOOD

  12. Jonny 2.3 Says:

@Joe: Falcons are sackless and we have 3 sacks, but it is the scoreboard which determines who the impotent ones are.

  13. Hawaiian Buc Says:

Yeah, I have never been impressed with Glennon. Just never seen anything he has done to show me he could be a franchise QB. That being said, McCown hasn’t shown much either except a tendency to make stupid, rookie mistakes. I’m getting really close to the point of wanting to see Glennon, just to see if he has improved. Not a fan of watching a 35 year old QB dinking and dunking, and eventually making a foolish mistake.

  14. buc'd Up Says:

Falcons have 0 sacks but they do have one thing going for them… they are not the Bucs! And, because they are not the Bucs, that gives them the ability to figure out what the problem is and fix it. This technique may seem queer to a lot of folks round here but its rather common in other NFL cities across the country and used quite often.

  15. Kgh4life Says:

I also agree the Falcons defense isn’t that great. If the Bucs will only be more aggressive on offend they might have a chance Thursday.

  16. FLBoyInDallas Says:

Glennon does the same exact thing as McCown in throwing short passes all the time and being afraid to pull the trigger on longer throws. He’s just a taller, slower version of McCown.

  17. Skyline Crew Says:

I would disagree with you FLBoyInDallas. I believe last year was due to Schiano telling him to throw short passes. There were times when he went vertical and looked good doing it.

  18. Soggy Says:

GLENNON GLENNON HE’S OUR MAN – IF HE CAN”T DO IT – MAYBE MADEA CAN

  19. Bucsfan4lyf Says:

Here’s hoping McClown throws 2 picks in the 1st half, were losing and Glennon comes in to save the day!

    GO BUCS!!!

    #MGM

  20. FLBoyInDallas Says:

McCown went vertical frequently in Chicago to Marshal and Jeffrey, so why isn’t he doing it now? That tells me someone, probably Lovie, is dialing back the offense either because a) he doesn’t trust McCown, or b) he doesn’t trust Arroyo, or c) all of the above.

My point is, putting Glennon in won’t change a thing if the offensive philosophy is coming from the top because that won’t change just because there’s a QB change.

  21. Skyline Crew Says:

Come on Bucsfan4lyf, you can mean that. You really hope that our QB throws 2 picks just so Glennon can come in? What if those 2 picks happen in the redzone and we lose? Then you can only blame yourself and your voodoo magic. haha

  22. ToesOnTheLine Says:

“consider me the newest member of the Glennon mob.”

“I’m getting really close to the point of wanting to see Glennon, just to see if he has improved.”

    @ Hawaiian

Holy sh!t I never would have believed you would be tempted by the dark side and possibly give Glennon a fair chance!? Welcome to the MGM 🙂

Hey if such a paradigm shift can occur on JBF then by Jesus I’m predicting the Bucs not only cover the spread but actually win Thursday. If Hawaiian ever admits that (so far) Schiano has been the better Bucs HC than Lovie then all bets are off since the Apocalypse is upon us 🙂

  23. bucrightoff Says:

Last year as the backup who came in and McCown was playing with house money, he could play freely and without fear because he was always going back to the bench. Here he was handed the starters job on day 1, so the pressure level is totally different.

  24. Hawaiian Buc Says:

    @ToesOnTheLine,

Schiano started last year 0-8. If Lovie does the same, then I’ll say he’s done a better job. Don’t think that’s going to happen, but then again, I didn’t think we’d lose to a guy named Austin Davis.

  25. Hawaiian Buc Says:

“McCown went vertical frequently in Chicago to Marshal and Jeffrey, so why isn’t he doing it now? That tells me someone, probably Lovie, is dialing back the offense either because a) he doesn’t trust McCown, or b) he doesn’t trust Arroyo, or c) all of the above.

    ——-

I’m thinking along the same lines. Throw the damn ball to those 2 big studs on the outside. We do not have the personnel to run a dink and dunk offense.

  26. Soggy Says:

@FLBoyInDallas, good point, But there were passing plays where McCown was looking deep to wide open evans and jackson and would not pull the trigger, they say he did not see them, but I swear it looks like he seen evans with miles of green grass open and no throw, and I think that was the play where he took the sack instead.. This was the panthers game..No gut’s no glory as they say.. It’s a pass friendly league now to.. Lovie Pass the Rock. The BOMB Baby..

  27. Bucsfan4lyf Says:

    @ Skyline Crew

Im just tired of seeing McClown mess up our offense for us. Glennon is WAY better than him but doesn’t get the chance because he’s not “Lovie’s guy”. Glennon with the weapons we have now, offensive line that is actually pass run blocking well and a healthy Doug Martin (he is a stud), we would be looking a lot better.

  28. Skyline Crew Says:

On that point, then yes I would agree with you.

  29. Skyline Crew Says:

    @ Bucsfan4lyf

We don’t have a healthy DM, but Rainey is doing fine. I would say Glennon would be better than last year because he has a year under his belt and was thrown in to a bad situation. If he comes in now I believe he will have a lot more confidence and will do better. As for McCown, well I have to give him until tomorrow to decide. The Panthers and Rams have a nice Defense. The Falcons on the other hand don’t have a scary D and we saw that with the Saints game. If McCown can’t convert some passes tomorrow then we know we have a problem.

  30. Brent Says:

I think Mcnown is very average but how is 16-21 with 8.3 yards per completion bad for last week. A lot of people are freaking out over his performance. He ran for 1 td and threw another. How is that awful? All qbs average 1 interception per week. I’m not a mcnown fan but I’m trying to understand how last weeks performance was awful. He’s never going to be great? His name is josh mcnown not drew Bree’s.

  31. Snook Says:

The Falcons will be able to rush the passer tomorrow night. Much the same way backup QBs struggle against other teams but not the Bucs.

I expect McCown to be sacked at least twice.

  32. Bobby Says:

@Brent…Aactually his name is Josh ‘McCown’ not mcnown but it’s not the fact that he threw a pick. It’s the fact he threw a pick with first and goal on the nine yard line with a defender dragging him down. His decision making process is just scary.

  33. Bobby Says:

Yes….the two ‘a’s are for affect and no I’m not trying to be the grammer police but you misspelled McCown twice so I was just trying to make you aware of the correct last name.

  34. Bobby Says:

I’m waiting for someone to point out that it should be ‘effect’ and not ‘affect’. C’mon guys….you’re disappointing me…..

  35. Brent Says:

Bobby would you say that’s a below average pass blocking o-line? I agree that was a bad pick but he wasn’t as bad as everyone is saying. At least not statistically. If he continues to throw red zone picks I agree yank him. People act like we have a savior on the bench and not another average joe.

  36. buctebow Says:

McCown Glennon Potayto Potaato. Same offense poopycaca.

  37. Jonny 2.3 Says:

@Brent: Let it be. As of now McCown is just an easy target because of the kind of the interceptions he throws. A 2 TD 1 Int game with 65%+ completion rate and 8.4 yds/attempt tells me that outside of the interception, he was an asset in moving the chains. There are several game manager QBs like Ponder for example that despite a strong running game throw interceptions and not even have as many completions, resulting in an offense that goes 3rd and out often. If only the idiot McCown could cut down on those interceptions, he would actually be considered a compliment to our offense and Lovie would trust him to throw in the red zone. I am rooting for the guy, but he has to put up in the next game or two.
