The Countdown: Worst 20 Buccaneers Of The Past 10 Years — No. 6

July 20th, 2014

Endless Top-Whatever lists across the Internet got Joe thinking of the Tampa Bay drought since their Super Bowl glory. Not a playoff victory since! And that motivated Joe to rank the 20 worst Buccaneers of the past 10 years.

Serious deliberations went into this at JoeBucsFan.com world headquarters.

Beers bottles were thrown. Game film came out. Arguments ensued. Chants of Sabby from wild interns were quieted by Joe.

In the end, primary consideration was given to expectations combined with on-field performance. Off-field behavior was a factor, and players were not punished for injuries.

No. 6— cornerback Myron Lewis (2010 – 2013 preseason)

The 2010 NFL Draft was heralded as the greatest draft known to man. Why? Because so many college players were declaring in order to enter the league before a new rookie salary cap would take effect the following season.

The Bucs drafted long, athletic Myron Lewis with the third selection in the third round. So this was like a high second-round pick in a traditional season.

The Bucs even had a defensive backs guru as a head coach in Raheem Morris. And he gave a thumbs up on Myron, who was a full fledged graduate of Vanderbilt in the SEC. Not only was Lewis the prototype long corner, but he was a smart guy and a good citizen who graduated early from Vandy.

But Lewis couldn’t play football. The guy was a supreme bust.

Joe vowed not to punish guys for being injured, and Lewis had several nagging ailments, but even when healthy on the field he was dreadful. The man was toasted repeatedly, extraordinary considering how little he was on the field.

Keep in mind Lewis couldn’t crack the lineup when the 2012 Bucs sported the second-worst secondary (statistically) in NFL history. It was a bungling bunch of cornerbacks to be kind.

A piece of perspective on Lewis, it was actually noteworthy to Joe and various media types when Lewis looked good at times in 2013 training camp. That’s how rare it was.

Joe learned Greg Schiano, the Bears former secondary coach, was a big factor in holding on to Lewis so long. Schiano loved those measurables and thought he might be able to revive Lewis. He didn’t.

Appropriately, 26-year-old Lewis was last spotted getting cut from the Edmonton Eskimos earlier this year.

No. 7 — Byron Leftwich
No. 8 — Edell Shepherd
No. 9 — Jerramy Stevens
No. 10 — Jim Bates
No. 11 — Gaines Adams
No. 12 — Keydrick Vincent
No. 13 — Dre Moore
No. 14 —Kevin Ogletree
No. 15 – Sean Mahan
No. 16 — Da’Quan Bowers
No. 17 — Daniel Te’o-Nesheim
No. 18 — Kyle Moore
No. 19 – Jeremy Trueblood
No. 20 – Michael Clayton

The Countdown: Worst 20 Buccaneers Of The Past 10 Years will run once or twice daily until No. 1 is revealed on Thursday, July 24.

  1. SAMCRO Says:

Alvin Harper had to be one of the worst all-time Buc free agents ever but that was more than ten years ago, so he shouldn’t make the list.

  2. Jack Black Says:

There are 5 players worse than Myron Lewis!?
What a sad decade for our team!

  3. Andrew 1 Says:

Dead on with this one. Right player at the right spot.

  4. knucknbuc Says:

Luke stocker should be coming up soon.

  5. Mort Says:

Like sticker just hasn’t been healthy. Also they already said no more current bucs are on the list after bowers.

Because they aren’t counting health, sticker can’t make the list.

  6. ToesOnTheLine Says:

Wow surprised a solid talent evaluator like Schiano was responsible for holding on to that turd, but glad to see the only memory of Lewis is on a list like this one. Still waiting for Benn, Sabby, Ward, Lindell, and Hayenesworth to get their names called 🙂

Haynesworth was a low priced mid season veteran pick-up that didn’t play particularly well… he wasn’t one of our worst. He came in with no expectations and left with little accomplishments. We got what we thought we were getting. A once talented player clinging to his last shot at playing in the NFL.

I have to agree that Ward, Sabby, and Benn should be in that list… not to mention Stocker, Lindell was terrible, don’t know if he played enough to warrant consideration, however. I’m pretty sure WR Dexter Jackson will be in the list. Only 5 spots left… Ward, Sabby, Benn, Stocker, Lindell, and D. Jackson are all great/terrible candidates.

I think its funny that Joe has this injury exemption that applies when he wants on this list. You are ridiculous. –Joe

Otherwise he would have done the top 20 blunders by the “Rock star.”

The list has Dominick mud smeared name all over these top 20 mistakes. I for one will be glad to close the chapter of “Dominick’ reign of failure”. Can’t wait to start training camp!!!

  9. Touch_Down_Tampa_Bay Says:

Remember people is 20 worst BUCCANEERS. There is a Head Coach (hint, hint) which with his game plans and lack/horrible game adjustments manage to get us multiple loses all by himself. Don’t remember?

Let me give you some hints- “The General” was in control of temperature, smiles in the sidelines, press box, Toes, COORDINATORS, Stunts, Media schedule, when QB can roll-out or not, 5-7 yard passes, hurry up offense, changing game plans when they are already working, excessive point scoring in the 2nd halves- ha, ha (sorry I had to go there), etc….

If he is not on this list, Joe is just killing time…

  10. whocares Says:

@ ToesOnTheLine Too bad Schiano’s job wasn’t main talent evaluator or he’d probably still be in Tampa. Recognizing greatness is worthless if you can’t coach greatness, or gameplan, or relate to the players in any way.

  11. Buc89 Says:

    @touchdowntampa

Well said, “The General” had his hands in everything

  12. blackmagic00 Says:

Where does the glass tiger (Joey Galloway) fit in? Dude must be on this list unless Joe’s leaving out the injury prone.

  13. Chris Says:

Agree with Lewis but joe if you have schiano as the worst buccaneer in the past 10 years, you’re lost. Raheem Morris and mark dominik share that honor.
Brian griese? Chris Simms? Michael Clayton I thought shoulda been higher

  14. Couch Fan Says:

Joey Galloway? That has to be sarcasm. Lol

  15. Legarrettes Blunt Says:

This inspired me to look at the 2010 nfl draft and it made me sick seeing all the studs we missed. We picked Brian Price, Arrelious Benn, and Myron Lewis over Navarro Bowman, JIMMY GRAHAM, Geno Atkins, Altereaun Verner. How bad was our scouting department under old regimes

  16. Shawnbucfan Says:

Mike Nuggent should be #1 .

  17. deminion Says:

The man was toasted repeatedly, extraordinary considering how little he was on the field. Lol that’s funny it means to me he gotta burned 95% of the time he was on the field that’s astounding

  18. SteveK Says:

Rock star should be on this list, especially if Schiano is on it. No doubt.

  19. Patrick Says:

I don’t think Jim Bates should be on this list. He had plenty of success before coming to the Bucs as a DC. The head coach of ours that hired him should be. You all know who I’m talking about. Bates’s defense simply did not fit our guys, and to top it off we had little talent as it was. The whole 2009 disaster falls on Raheem and Dominick.

Raheem Morris will definitely be on this list right? And Josh Freeman? Remember Joe is making this list, so we know Dominick won’t be on here.

  20. Joe Says:

I don’t think Jim Bates should be on this list. He had plenty of success before coming to the Bucs as a DC.

The list is “Buccaneers,” not “NFL.”

  21. buc'd Up Says:

I wonder if most of the folks that are leaving comments here can’t comprehend plain English or did they just not bother reading.

1 – only players from the last decade are on the list.

2 – only Buccaneers players are on the list

3 – injuries won’t count against the player

4 – its all in fun and a matter of opinion. Don’t get yer panties in a bunch over it.

Thanks Joe, Very entertaining, and kind of sad too!!!

  22. Harry Says:

“…a solid talent evaluator like Schiano…”

Yeah, like keeping Cheeseburger Bowers over Bennett – another example of Schiano’s shrewd evaluation skills…

  23. SteveK Says:

    Buc’d up,

The list has a defensive coordinator on it, so it’s NOT just former Buc players in the last 10 years.

  24. Harry Says:

I thought Clayton should have been higher as well. There should be a “frustration factor” in the evaluation. If Joe can add a guy in for dropping a pass that would have won a playoff game – that is a frustration factor.

Also, I am all in on Sabby, Benn, and Ward. Stoker was/is/will always be hurt. I am not saying he doesn’t suck. But Joe’s rule is “injuries don’t count”. I agree with Brandon on Haynesworth. There were no expectation. He had already bombed badly in Washington.

  25. unbelievable Says:

You guys think EJ biggers is making this list?

  26. Bucsfanman Says:

Schiano cannot possibly be the worst rated Bucs coach of the last ten years! No freakin’ way. That honor HAS to go to Jeff Jagodzinsky. And if you tell me that Schiano was worse than Jag, you need to have your head examined and your Bucs fan card revoked PERMANENTLY!
