Bucs Sign 11, Cut Two Tight Ends

May 12th, 2014

It’s official: Wyoming gunslinger speedster quarterback Brett Smith is a Buccaneer, fighting for a backup job.

The Bucs are now down to five tight ends after cutting Steve Maneri and Josh Baker today.

And the Bucs announced their 2014 undrafted free agent signings:

Here are the rookie hopefuls with contracts. (Other names you’ve seen circulated on the Interwebs were either bogus, or they’re guys who were simply invited to the Bucs’ rookie minicamp this weekend.)

Center – Josh Allen  (Louisiana-Monroe)
Linebacker – Nate Askew (Texas A&M)
Wide Receiver – Aaron Burks  (Boise State)
Defensive Tackle – Euclid Cummings (Georgia Tech)
Cornerback Keith Lewis (Virginia-Lynchburg)
Guard Andrew Miller  (Virginia Tech)
Tackle Matt Patchan  (Boston College)
Wide Receiver Solomon Patton  (Florida)
Quarterback – Brett Smith (Wyoming)
Defensive End – Chaz Sutton  (South Carolina)
Safety – Mycal Swaim  (Eastern Michigan)

Joe’s a bit bummed about good-guy, tough-guy Maneri, a converted tackle and former starting blocking tight end for the Chiefs who was excited to be the “edge-setter” in Tampa for Doug Martin. Joe wishes him well.

Is Nate Askew related to former Buc B.J. Askew?

  2. Oil Derrick Brooks Says:

Patchan was highly recruited coming out of HS. Not sure what happened in Gainesville. Injuries?

  3. Joe Says:

    Oil Derrick Brooks:

Saw something the other day that few of the guys drafted in the first round were top recruits. Just like the draft is a crapshoot, so too is college recruiting. Some guys mature quicker but no one can tell what their ceilings are. Sort of like Little League. The kids that win the Little League World Series, not too many of them play in the major leagues.

  4. Oil Derrick Brooks Says:

Totally agree on that. But, I was wondering if he had some medical issues. I will get out the google and look.

  5. Tampabaybucfan Says:

Luke made the first cut…..if he keeps it up, he will replace Myron as my “Who dat Buc?” favorite….

  6. Harry Says:

and they kept Luke “my friends call me IR” Stoker?? I mean I know there is alleged “potential” there, but my gosh.

  7. Espo Says:

I was hoping Maneri stuck around

  8. lightningbuc Says:

    _______

Yeah, the only thing more silly than grading teams’ NFL drafts is the ranking of college teams’ recruiting classes!

  9. Oil Derrick Brooks Says:

    @Harry

Apparently, Myron Lewis bequeathed the Karl The Truth Williams award to Stocker. Some guys just stick longer than logic dictates.

  10. Tackleblockwin Says:

After reading the title I skimmed for the name Stocker. Wow!

  11. ToesOnTheLine Says:

Can’t imagine Stocker makes the final 53, but looking forward to seeing what this Brett Smith kid can do in camp. Still think MG8 ends up the starter come regular season, but a good QB camp competition will be fun to watch. No more gifting it’s all about #5 silliness

  12. StAugBuc Says:

Joe, time for my monthly question: Any update on the App?

  13. MR.T Says:

Surprised Maneri is gone. The guy looked like he was chiseled out of block of granite, must not have cut it as a blocker, go figure. Luke “9 lives” Stocker is still here, he must be doing something right but I don’t see them keeping 5 TE’s so either he or Crabtree will be gone eventually.

  14. Harry Says:

    @ODB
Dom was bad about that – continuing to believe in the players he picked regardless of the evidence of their poor play (as you pointed out: Myron Lewis). No way Stoker sticks this year unless he sneaks onto IR real early – which is very possible, lol

  15. williethewonder Says:

@ Toes I, too, am excited to see how Brett Smith comes along. He’s almost 6′ 2″ with a 4.51 40 time and SBnation.com had him as their 8th ranked QB. However, there’s no way Glennon will be the starter, as long as McCown is healthy. McCown throws an accurate deep ball and Glennon does not.

  16. Theodore Says:

@williethewonder – “McCown throws an accurate deep ball and Glennon does not.”

Define “deep”? McCown doesn’t have an arm left. Which makes the VJax/Evans height combo a good fit.

  17. teacherman Says:

    @Oil Derrick Brooks

You dont know anything about the Bucs if you hate on Karl the Truth Williams.

    He was an awesome Buccaneer!

Now you sir? “Mr. OIL”- are just another “ugly negative troll hater.”

Karl Williams was a world class WR. And so is ANY WR on ANY roster for that matter.

Do you realize how hard it is to make it to the NFL??

Do you have any idea how exceptionally rare and unique these athletes are?

Never compare Karl THE TRUTH Williams with Myron Lewis.

  18. Mr. Patrick Says:

If you haven’t seen Brett Smith play, you should check him out. The guy is really good

  19. Joe Says:

If you haven’t seen Brett Smith play, you should check him out. The guy is really good

You are begging to wake up lightningbuc from his nap.

  20. lightningbuc Says:

Did I miss anything? I just woke up. I dreamt Brett Smith hit Luke Stocker in the back of the end zone as time expired to beat the Manziel led Cleveland Browns in the 2015 Super Bowl.

  21. Harry Says:

    @lightningbuc

LMAO, now look whos is having dreams about Johnny Football!

  22. StAugBuc Says:

    @lightningbuc:

If Smith hit Stocker, that’s more bath salts than dream!

  23. Ernest T. Bass Says:

williethewonder knows what he talking about and pays attention to what just happened at camp a few weeks ago.

Thank you Willie The Wonder for letting people know who really distanced themselves and is the clear #1.

    +++++++++++++++

Tons, he missed two full seasons, I believe, once with an ACL and the other with a torn pectoral muscle. He is very talented, if he can stay healthy, he will make the team. He’s no load at the point of attack, but he can pass block, and I have a suspicion we’ll be throwing the ball a little more this season.

You know who else will make the team? Nate Askew. 6’3 241 4.46 40, incredible athleticism, played 3 years as a WR and is still learning how to play LB (had 3 INTs last season, 2 for TDs) but he could be a special teams demon. Add in the fact that after our starters, our reserves are Dane Fletcher, Kalil Glaud, Damaso Munoz, and Danny Lansanah… 4-3 teams typically keep at least 5 LBs, oftentimes 6. Askew has a great shot here.

Are you saying he hates negative trolls or that he is a hater that also happens to be a negative troll? I think I understand the “ugly” part.

  26. tmaxcon Says:

    Theodore

I am no McCown fan but believe he has a vital role, might want to ask brandon marshall about McCown’s arm. His arm is just fine with little wear and to the best of my knowledge no significant shoulder / elbow injuries. so how did you come to this conclusion he has no arm? curious.

  27. RachelWatson'sthong Says:

Kari Williams is a beloved ex-Buc. Anybody who says different is a pud tugger.

  28. tmaxcon Says:

Smith that’s my guy… LOL… If joe will allow it I’ll post a link to free Smithereens (or however they are spelling it), tee shirts in a week for any JBF follower who requests one.

lightningbuc – I have a special one just for you LOL…

  29. Frank Says:

The Bucs should take a test drive on Tebow. ESPN did a spot on him and he has progressed to where he can play in any offense and make all the throws.
    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=le9AFMm8V5o
I do not want to go into the season with a 35 year old career backup, A guy who showed me nothing last year, Kafka who has been on god knows how many rosters and a kid who was not good enough to get drafted. Cmon Bucs!

  30. Orca Says:

Tebow. Jeez, you timmy tuggers are persistent… The guy is done. Kaput. Finis. Will not play in the NFL ever again… unless he agrees to move to fullback.

  31. tmaxcon Says:

Tebow is a preacher not a nfl football player unless he switches positions. People I understand the love for saint Tebow please move on. That is the worst possible move and a total waste of time for the bucs. He just can’t throw the ball at nfl level.

  32. zam Says:

    @Frank, agree totally!

I’d take a Tebow with good mechanics in a heartbeat over our current set of turkeys.

  33. Sweets Willie Says:

Smithereens, Rasta Seferians and Herronites, I’m a member of them all. Tmaxcon put me down for a medium T-shirt. We will have all mobile qb’s JMac, Kaf and Smithereen!!

  34. tmaxcon Says:

There is no such thing as Tebow with good mechanics that’s only a pipe dream for gator fans reliving the past. NEXT

  35. cmurda Says:

Bucs signed Myron Lewis at Cornerback, sweet Superbowl baby! Oh, Keith Lewis? Meh.

  36. Frank Says:

Watch the video….with an open mind. I mean what do we have to lose? If you hate him fine, but damn we have nothing to lose to try him out. What if Dilfer is right? What if he fixed his mechanics and could help us? Cmon Guys.

  37. lightningbuc Says:

    tmax,

I’ll wear the Smithereen shirt if you wear the Glennon Mob one. LOL!

  38. tmaxcon Says:

What do the bucs have to lose well in my opinion the reps are so valuable now with limited number of practices that every rep is priceless especially with a new system, loads of new players needing reps to gel. Just don’t think it’s worth the circus and time

  39. Frank Says:

Reps are valuable, I agree….but not right now they are not. The next reps will be taken by backups and rookies. A perfect time to take a look. McCown and Opie will not even be out there. Just think, McCown has never played an entire season and he is 35. Opie was not impressive last year. So then we turn to Kafka? Cmon. Tebow has heart and if he fixed his issues he would be as good as it gets. If you hate the Gators I understand, but I watched the kid play at Florida and with Denver. They have not a thing to lose to take a look.

  40. tmaxcon Says:

    Frank, I’ll borrow joe’s words that I recieve when I go off… I respect your passion but….

Sincerely I do respect your passion but Tebow is not worth it in my opinion.

  41. tmaxcon Says:

    lightningbuc

Your ON!!! My attorney will be contacting both reps of glennon and smith tomorrow just to get permission since Glennon Mob and Smithereens are plays on the names. I want to be legit. Obviously, they will want to approve my design that being said I have done these types of shirts before and they usually are all in as long as it’s tasteful. Not sure I am tasteful though.

  42. MR.T Says:

Watched the video on Tebow, he looks in great shape and has definitely improved his throwing mechanics, he’s not the old Tebow anymore that people are still thinking about and is quite passionate about the game as well, whether some team will give him a chance, who knows.

  43. Joe Says:

What if he fixed his mechanics and could help us? Cmon Guys.

Tebow has been trying to fix his mechanics since his last college game. Just a wild hunch that if they are not fixed by now, they never will be. Tebow simply cannot throw otherwise, he’d be in the league. Look how many chances a slug like Vince Young has had.

The Bucs should take a test drive on Tebow. ESPN did a spot on him and he has progressed to where he can play in any offense and make all the throws.

Why not? We already missed out on a overrated QB.

  45. Buc the Haters Says:

I’m super excited about Brett Smith’s potential. I think he’s going to end up battling really hard for the QB of the Future job.. & Nate Askew is a crazy athletic LB. Cool signings. BUCS ARE BEASTIN

  46. Frank Says:

Tmaxcon Your a Gator and Tebow hater, I get it. Its the NFL and its about signing ANY player to help your NFL team win. Tebow has more talent in his pinky than McCown and Opie have in their entire body combined.

Buxfan, Please….Manziel is better than anything we have on the roster at QB now AND if we would of drafted him he would be starting and would easily beat the two backup QB’s we have now.

  47. BoJim Says:

    Frank Said:

“Tebow has more talent in his pinky than McCown and Opie have in their entire body combined.”

    And yet he remains unsigned.

  48. Frank Says:

And BoJim…its a shame. Because he should be on an NFL roster now.
