Revis Deal Continues To Flummox

March 17th, 2014

lovie smith 0106bFor a couple of reasons, Joe often brings you the Bucs-related takes of fight-instigatingbarista-trainingpedestrian-bumpingolive oil-lappingpopcorn-munchingcoffee-slurpingfried-chicken-eatingoatmeal-lovingcircle-jerkingbeer-chuggingcricket-watchingscone-loathingcollege football-naïve, baseball-box-score-reading Peter King, of NBC Sports and Sports Illustrated fame.

First, they’re often interesting. Second, King is plugged into so many NFL general managers, executives and players, that King’s takes are often reflective of more than just his own brain.

In today’s edition of his Monday Morning Quarterback column, King continues to express his disbelief that Lovie Smith cut Revis. Here’s an excerpt:

The Buccaneers cut Revis because he isn’t a great scheme-fit for the Tampa 2 defense, in which corners must be more physical than if they were left on islands to simply cover receivers short and deep. I get that. But last year, according to Pro Football Focus, defenses played three or more corners on 58% of the NFL’s defensive snaps. Revis is the best cover man in football. The cap rose by $10 million, and Tampa Bay could have afforded to do most or all of what it did in free agency and keep Revis, who already cost the team first- and fourth-round picks in addition to the contract that paid him $16 million a year.

I get new coach Lovie Smith wanting a clean slate and not wanting the onerous Revis contract. But if you told me the league’s best cover corner could be had in this era of pass-happy football, in a division with quarterbacks Drew Brees, Matt Ryan and Cam Newton, for 12% of my salary cap, I’d say, “Where do I sign up for that?”

For Joe, what will forever complicate the Revis move is Bucs general manager Jason Licht and Lovie clearly stating that they wanted Revis back and were working with Revis to renegotiate his deal. Just how much the Bucs were willing to pay Revis is unknown. It’s safe to assume the Bucs and Revis were about $4 million apart.

Is that a lot of cash to gamble to see what a potential Hall of Famer, healthy and in his prime, looks like in your defense?

Yes, Joe understands the Bucs went shopping with their post-Revis windfall. They bought some quality, fresh groceries. But that won’t end the Revis debate anytime soon.

  1. Harry Says:

I fully agree. I don’t understand why we let Revis go – the Bucs would have easily had the best set of DBs in the NFL by keeping him and the others that were added. The Bucs would very likely have had a top 5 D. I know there are plenty who think Revis was overpaid, but the Pats thought enough of him to throw $12M at him. So how “overpaid” could he have been?

  2. snook Says:

People just don’t get it even after Lovie spells it all out for everyone.

Revis wasn’t cut because he didn’t fit the scheme. He was cut because he was slated to be paid $16 million.

L&L are all about value. Revis is not a value.

  3. The_Buc_Realist Says:

Maybe didn’t want a certain CB in his office every week trying to tell him how a defense needs to be run, then B#%$ about it in the offseason. Or that the third round pick, and money was worth more than the difference between revis and Alterraun Verner. Rebuilding the garbage lines was the most important task this offseason.

  4. William Says:

Joe of the top 5 receivers coming up on the draft which has produce the most YAC & TDs?

  5. meh Says:

We get our players from Dollar Tree now. We need to cut McCoy. He’s poor value. We could get a much cheaper replacement.

Value. Lol.I guess that’s the new PR schtick.

  6. Bucnjim Says:

Everyone is assuming he wanted to be here. Revis knows this is a rebuilding project and wanted no part of it. Knowing he could make money and play for a SB contender is the main reason he is no longer here.

  7. Bucfan40 Says:

We signed a crappy backup QB, a backup tight end, and Michael Johnson with that 16 mil. Anyone who says cutting Revis was a good move is blind.

  8. snook Says:

You know how absurd $16 million is for a corner?

So absurd that no one in the NFL was willing to pay it.

  9. bucrightoff Says:

The lines were garbage, as was the secondary. And we essentially have only swapped Revis for Verner. So the secondary right now is technically worse than it was last year. Money was never an issue here, the Bucs have no cap issues at present and none forthcoming. To not even give Revis a year to see what he can do at full health seems like a big waste.

Personally I’d rather have Revis and Verner as the CBs and a few less other signings. That’s a fantastic duo to have, almost certainly the NFLs best. Instead its gonna be Verner and Banks/Johnson/Gorrer….not exactly striking fear in any offense.

  10. Stokes963 Says:

Here you go again Joe. Please come out and say that you have a man crush on Revis… Is Revis one of the best CB in the league? Of course. Let’s not forget that he played on our 4-12 team last year, so how great is he? Bottom line is, Revis did not want to be here, or he would have stayed. It’s comical that Mevis is going to make more than Brady this year, and if you think Revis is more valuable to the Pats than Brady you’re a fool.

  11. Drew Says:

Mevis before the team 1st gone is a positive move. The cap space he opened allowed the team to address additional needs. With all the moves made in FA the future holds a lot of promise.

  12. johnny Says:

Yes Revis and his contract were so great no one was even willing to give up a 7th round pick for him and the contract …If Revis contract would of been or 10-12 mil there would of been a bidding war .

  13. Buc1987 Says:

NFL Network did a poll the day Revis was released. I’m sure many of you saw it. The question was. Is Revis worth 16 million dollars? 90% of viewers said hell NO.

No team was willing to take Revis for 16 million dollars and that included ours. Yet we still have those 10% of the NFLN viewers that think he was worth it. Maybe they were all Bucs fans.

The point is 10’s of 1000’s of people around the country get it, yet we still have some knucklehead stragglers that are most likely Buc fans that either don’t get or refuse to understand it.

  14. tmaxcon Says:

I like Revis but, I think he is more about the yearly Payday versus Rings. I want a guy who wants to win and get paid not just get paid. I get it though short earning span. Sounds like Revis was not a bad guy and by all accounts from the media he was a good influence on the bucs younger players that being said when was the last time anyone heard Revis mention super bowls or wins and not just payday!!!! Anyhow, I think the bucs will be just fine without him and signed some potentially good free agents with his cash. Only time will tell though. Go Bucs!

  15. Posey99 Says:

Lets see how much cap space we have left after we resign Gerald McCoy…

  16. zam Says:

A season of performances will close the chapter.

I feel a lot better about the release now. Revis really never wanted to be here, and still didn’t after Lovie came in. So who wants even the best cornerback in the game if you have to force him to stay?

And Verner is a top tier CB, who is known for his versatility. I’m not sure we will feel any loss at all.

  17. Joe Dunn Says:

    Buc1987 is right

“The point is 10′s of 1000′s of people around the country get it, yet we still have some knucklehead stragglers that are most likely Buc fans that either don’t get or refuse to understand it.”

This is what I say ALL THE TIME

Too many think they are smarter than the GMs and coaches……it is soooo easy to sit at your keyboard and sound like an “EXPERT”.

  18. joseph mamma Says:

There is just no way he is worth 16 million a year, but especially not worth it on a team that was 4-12 and competing for last place every year. I think our new GM was smart for releasing him after he wouldn’t reduce his salary. He will get his 12 million from the pats and be cut after one year and the market will dictate how much he is worth next offseason.

  19. Couch Fan Says:

You keep saying we didnt have cap problems… and your right, except if we didnt cut Revis we would of had cap problems.

Plus It’s obvious he did not want to be here. Good riddens. I rather have average players who want to be here.

  20. snook Says:

McCoys new contract won’t be any more than what he’s costing now. Go look what Atkins got. Atkins averages $11M per year. Go look up what McCoy makes this year.

    Do some research.

  21. Buc1987 Says:

zam…the Bucs went 4-12 last season. I’m pretty damn sure we won’t feel any loss at all. Hell if they go 5-11 that’s an improvement.

  22. snook Says:

I have no problem Revis being all about money. That’s his right. But let someone else pay him.

  23. BucsQcCity Says:

    16M$ = overpaid.
Didn’t want to renegotiate. Already has 70M$+ collected from jets and bucs, I think it’s fair to asses he’ll never go broke. If he wanted he could have negotiate something with the Bucs but he didn’t. He ddidn’t even help for a trade when he knew he wasn’t going to get anything near 16M$.

Plus each time a media ask him about something it’s overblown so he’s a distraction.

Bucs roster was full of holes. Now we might have a shot at filling most of holes left through Draft plus the 16M$ cleared.

As Licht said, they are not talent collectors!

  24. BirdDoggers Says:

Revis will be forgotten if Lovie can build this team into a winner in a short amount of time. If the defense struggles against the pass, Lovie and Licht will look foolish for simply cutting one of the best defenders in football. The Bucs could afford Revis even though he could be viewed as a luxury. He’s a luxury most any team would like to have and the Bucs had him. Regardless of the defensive scheme or his contract, Revis is a player you find a way to use if you can afford him.

On the other hand, the Patriots are going all in this year. It will be easy to say Revis doesn’t provide a big enough impact and isn’t worth the money if the Patriots don’t make it to the Super Bowl. Time will tell.

  25. Bucsfanman Says:

I would have liked for them to keep him. Yeah, $16 million might be a tad too rich for our blood, but money was never an issue here.
Sure, we were able to land a few additional FAs with that cap money. I ask this though: Did our secondary get better?
We may(MAY!) have filled a few holes, but in my opinion, we opened up another.
Do not tell me that Verner > Revis!
I’m sure that there’s more help on the way. It’s not my money so I really don’t care.
    Buccaneer for life!

  26. Buc1987 Says:

LOL I found a Revis article from July 2013. In hindsight of the past season see if you can spot the funniest line of his comments. Actually the whole thing kind of makes you shake your head. Keep in mind while reading it that it was in July.

    July 2013

“It’s more of a family here. It’s more of a family here,” Revis said. ”Everybody is real tight here. We all get along, everybody is fine. There’s no nitpicking. No small stories leaking out to be bigger stories. Everybody is on the same page here and we want to win.”

  27. Bucfan#37 Says:

    Revis who?

  28. lightningbuc Says:

You know, it is possible to turn your volume off when necessary. –Joe

  29. snook Says:

The Patriots are putting $5M in dead money on next year’s cap just to have Revis this year. No thanks.

  30. Chris@Apple Roof Cleaning Says:

Revis was cut by Tampa because we did not feel he was worth 16 million, and because he is a distraction, who thinks he is also a coach.
Lovie wants team players for Tampa, and that would not be Darrelle Revis.

  31. nate_tweetz Says:

It was a good move… The “best” corner in football is on his 3rd team in 3 years and will be on his 4th team next year when the Patriots release him and his $20 million option. Revis is all about the money. I guarantee he could of stayed here for what he signed with the Patriots, but he didn’t. He will continue to hop around the league from team to team and chase money until NFL teams get tired of overpaying him. Then, instead of taking less, he’ll just probably retire. When it’s all said and done, we will not be the only team in the NFL to let this guy go. There will be a handful of teams. So this move by the Bucs should NOT be considered so asinine.

  32. mpmalloy Says:

I know exactly why Revis was released but,
(like so many media professionals), I’m
afraid to tell the truth in public…I don’t want to
end up fired for exposing the festering underbelly.

I had nothing to do with Lovie.

  33. Fritz50 Says:

“It’s safe to assume the Bucs and Revis were about $4 million apart.”

In my opinion, it doesn’t matter how far apart they were. If Revis refused to agree, the choice was cut him, or play him. We’ll have to wait & see how it turns out. Let’s hope we’re asking ‘Revis who?’ when it’s all said & done.

I don’t like it but I get it: THere is only one way to cover in todays NFL PASS RUSH
    PASS RUSH
    PASS RUSH

If the money and draft is used to magically give them a mosnter pass rush, I’m all good with it.

I still don’t like it though

  37. nate_tweetz Says:

For all you guys arguing that we the Bucs could afford to overpay Revis… The Glazers can afford to hand out free tickets at Ray Jay for every game. Hell, the Glazers can afford to pay us to go sit in those seats every game. Let’s all get up in arms about that! They can afford it!… Newsflash: JUST BECAUSE YOU CAN AFFORD TO PAY DOESN’T MEAN YOU SHOULD.

  38. LUVMYBUCS Says:

Worst Trade in NFL History-Time To Move On-Go Buc!

  39. Bucsfanman Says:

I wonder if this rancor was similar to that when Deion started bouncing from team to team.
Truth is, the days of loyalty in football have long since gone. I look at Peyton in a Broncos uniform just tearing it up and I think, wow how did this happen? The NFL is about business, plain and simple. Whether it’s by choice(Revis) or necessity(Manning),there is no loyalty.
Revis is just another in a long string of FAs who will simply chase the dollars. Why not? I would. With all the cash these teams make, 16 million is a drop in the bucket.
I just find it funny how last year this guy was our “savior” and now he is a pariah.
Good luck Revis, except against the Bucs(when we meet again!).

  40. Bucsfanman Says:

LUV- After going 4-12 and releasing him in the offseason, I’d say that is THE understatement of the century!!!
    Go Bucs!

  41. Jcray648 Says:

All I know is we had the “BEST” corner in football and still went 4-12. He didn’t make that much of a difference. So why pay him 16 million?

Using your logic, why is Vincent Jackson, older than Revis and clearly losing a step, and captain of the NFL’s worst offense, ok to have at $11 million?–Joe

  42. thegregwitul Says:

It’s simple, really: it came down to the draft choice. Lovie and Licht wanted the 3rd round pick in what appears to be a deep draft, especially since the Bucs only have five picks to work with. If the team didn’t owe New York the 3rd round pick and it was locked in as either a 4th round pick or no pick at all, I truly believe Revis would still be a Buccaneer, even if the goal was to lower his annual cap figure. At the very least he would have been traded for something because the Bucs would have had more time to work with, and could have sat on Revis until the start of the season if they truly felt that the $16 million was too much for the best cover corner in football.

  43. Jktampa Says:

I wonder if the Bucs would’ve cut Revis if he had reduced his salary to the same level as he took from the Patriots. I bet not. He’s not a team guy and you can say what you want about the Patriots being a better team than the Bucs or about the team honoring their contract but it shows me what Revis thought of Tampa. Yes he’s a great player but I think the team will be better without him.

  44. phil Says:

I didn’t like the Revis trade when it was made but after the trade he is the best cornerback in the league and with the salary cap going up to 160 million in 2016 the Bucs could afford to keep Revis. There is no reason that they couldn’t run a man/zone defense.

  45. Oil Derrick Brooks Says:

Again, Joe is not permitting this kind of public discussion. –Joe

  46. lightningbuc Says:

    ODB,

Sorry, didn’t mean to get you and ’87 in hot water.

    Joe says:

“Using your logic, why is Vincent Jackson, older than Revis and clearly losing a step, and captain of the NFL’s worst offense, ok to have at $11 million?–Joe”

^ Using your logic, Mark Dominick would still be GM/not seen as one of reasonse for failure.

  48. StPeteBucsFan Says:

Herschel Walker was a great running back. Does anybody think Dallas made a mistake sending him to Minn. Yeah they got a boatload of players.

Well the same deal for the Bucs. They dumped Revis in return for a boatload of players in FA. If those players contribute, dumping Revis will look genius, if they do not, then Joe will get the last laugh.

  49. StPeteBucsFan Says:

BTW Not only does JBF do a great job, he has attracted a well informed group of commenters,.

And so I’m curious about your opinions. How much more value do you place in a 3rd round draft pick over a 4th round. IMO it’s significant. The deeper you get into the draft the more “guessing” and “speculation” comes into play.

I do not consider it a small benefit from the Revis dump that we move back into the 3rd round.

    What say ye all?

  50. Jcray648 Says:

Joe, Jackson was one of the few bright spots we did have on offense, clearly he has lost a step but who was and is out there better to replace him. I see what your saying but apparently the team felt like Revis was replaceable and that they almost got equal value at corner for less the price.

  51. bucray1 Says:

joe, I love reading most of your articles , however , you tend to look at things thru narcacistic glasses. just because your not capable of understanding something , doesn’t make it wrong. there is an old saying in the medical profession “sometimes you have to cut to cure”. let’s trust lovie and licht since they have vastly more insight and experience than all of us or you.

You mean a guy talking in the third person sounds like a narcissist. That’s odd. 😉 –Joe

  52. Jcray648 Says:

Stevek (MGM)- Amen to that brother!

  53. bucballya Says:

Revis Island for “only” 12% of the salary cap? Theoretically that means we could have less than 10 players just like Revis total!!!! We need 22 players minimum just for starters! That’s why Peter King is a sports writer and not a GM or HC. Go Lovie and Licht! Revis refused to take a paycut, then went to play for the PATS for what amounts to a paycut. GOOD RIDDANCE!

  54. Oil Derrick Brooks Says:

    @Lightning

  58. THETRUTH Says:

We were 4-12 with revis but he is not reason. Using that logic trade everyone they were 4-12. Trade David , McCoy, they were 4-12

  59. kaput Says:

Cheap is cheap, and this team is cheap. It’s been that way for the last decade plus. It’s just a fact.

Trying to convince yourself and others that the Bucs are shrewd, that the know how to manage a winning salary cap and that they are cusp of something grand is comical.

Losing a top ten NFL player from the roster usually doesn’t result in better results the following year.

If the Bucs are closer to 10 million than to 20 million under the cap once the season starts, I’ll give them a chance. But you just watch, they’ll quietly cut the roster to jettison more salary after the draft.

    I’d love to be wrong.

  60. Teddy Says:

I really disagree. I for one was happy to see Revis gone. Sure, he’s arguably the best CB in the league, but I think the team was smart to swap his bloated salary for Verner’s reasonable contract, giving them the flexibility to build a better pass rush. Revis was overpaid for what they would do with him in this defense. Remember that the Bucs glory years weren’t predicated on a great secondary – they were built with a fearsome pass rush that made decent players in the secondary look better.

I for one, am happy with Verner and Banks as the starting QB duo, and if they can pick up a smart vet for the third CB along with another couple of D-linemen, this defense will be scary.

    As for the offense…………..

  61. MTM Says:

Why pay Mevis 16 million knowing there is no chance of making it to the Super bowl. Everyone acts like Lovie made the contract with Revis. Nobody was or is going to pay Mevis 16 million. What a shock he left for less money. Plus the annual renegotiation tactics. Mevis will be a distraction even in N.E.
The knuckle heads who think McCown is worthless need to look at the FA QB market. It’s not exactly stellar.

  62. Orca Says:

blah blah blah, let’s move on Joe… it’s done.

  63. Buc Weed Says:

Talib was a shutdown corner. Mevis was not the same player he was prior to injury. He was beaten for big plays and TDs all year. Tape don’t lie. Denver wanted to trade for Mevis but he wouldn’t restructure. He also costs us a draft pick. He is half the corner he once was.

  64. oldfart44 Says:

I hated to see him go because he is so good, so professional, and so smooth. But alas he is the ultimate mercenary. In my opinion, it would have been an ongoing negotiation from year to year because he knows right now he can get the money. Assuming he does not get injured in New England, just wait and see what he asks for next year, unless maybe they win the Super Bowl. He was well trained by Ty Law.

  65. Jim Says:

Revis gone = no 2013 1st round pick. Those are the kind of mistakes that hurt teams for years.

  66. Bucsfanman Says:

I love how people keep regurgitating that nonsense about not fitting the scheme. There was another fool in Bucs history who said that he couldn’t get Joey Galloway and Antonio Bryant on the field at the same time! What?!

  67. pick6 Says:

    a) it is not acceptable to say “we did not want darelle revis on our team and are excited to be moving on from him and building the team our way”

    b) they probably would have loved revis on the team…but not at a salary revis would agree to play at

    c) restructuring is bi-lateral. revis would lose leverage and future cracks at the market with the cap going way up if he restructured to help the bucs vs the cap this year and tied himself to the team for the next 5 seasons. revis actually tweeted last season that he’d rather be losing for $16 mil in tampa than winning for less with the jet. all about the $$, which is his right, but definitely a factor for our coach & GM

    c) i’m guessing they saw further complications coming, namely holdouts and an excessive demand of guaranteed money plus a raise as the cap jumped upwards the next 2 years

  68. John Ensch Says:

If you continue to see the Revis deal as a mistake then you really don’t get the big picture. They gave him every opportunity to redo his deal, HE said no. I see him giving up on the Bucs more than they gave up on him. If he really wanted to stay, he would have redone that deal. The big picture looks alot better without him than with him.

  69. BamBamBuc Says:

I had no problem with the Revis money. I had no problem with the Revis production. What I did have a problem with is spending a 1st round pick and losing a 4th rounder this year (and a 6th if you include the horrible Carimi trade) to RENT players for 1 YEAR!!!

Look at it this way, if you spend a 1st round pick on a college prospect, you’re taking a risk of how productive they’ll be in the NFL. 1st round picks tend to hit more than bust, so the odds are pretty good at just about any position. That pick is supposed to be productive at one of 22 starting spots for multiple years. Giving away a 1st round pick to rent a player for 1 year is losing the “multiple” years we should have gotten from the draft pick. As for the 6th rounder, that’s hopefully a backup/depth player that sticks, may make it a year or two, may be a hidden gem, or may get cut before the first season. Carimi wasn’t a total loss of a trade. We got a year of a backup for a 6th round pick, that’s about all we can ask. But we only got 1 year of performance from our 1st rounder last year and that’s what irks me. I have a feeling that Sheldon Richardson is going to be starting more than one year for the Jets. But go beyond that…. what about Tyler Eiffert? Trufant, Patterson, among others. Guys we missed out on that should play for years for their teams. And we got a 1 year lease on a great CB.

  70. Orca Says:

blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah

  71. Snook Says:

“Revis gone = no 2013 1st round pick. Those are the kind of mistakes that hurt teams for years.”

Let’s face it. Dom hasn’t picked well in the 1st round since he’s been GM.

Is the missing 2013 rounder really holding us back this much?

No. He would’ve reached for someone anyways.

  72. Buc Fan #237 Says:

    Orca, I concur.

  73. Joe Dunn Says:

Me too…… bitching will NOT get us any first downs, or INTs

  74. Harry Says:

Hey Orca, You don’t have to read the posts, and you don’t have to write any. You look kind of silly complaining about them when you can easily just go to another site.

  75. Tom S. Says:

Maybe if Joe’s girlfriend Mark Dominik didn’t pay Revis 4 million more per year than any other team in the league was willing to pay (Browns and Raiders both balked at paying 16 mil even though they knew Revis was never going to sign there by choice) then Revis would still be a Buccaneer.

The contract was an albatross and in spite of what King says. when you pay a guy 60% more than the second highest at his position yearly, and almost 3 times as much as the 2nd team all-pro corner who you just signed, Revis btw was not an all-pro for 2013, then you are putting yourself into a corner. This is football, there are 11 people on each side, not 5 like in the NBA.

  76. Brandon Says:

and if anybody knows anything about building defense , it’s Peter King.

  77. NY Buc Says:

I too am disappointed that Revis is gone AND the Bucs essentially pissed away a 1st and 4th round pick because of the way it all worked out. I have a feeling that part of it could have been Lovie watching how Revis went through the media when he was displeased with how Schiano/Sheriden were playing him in zone. Revis is 100% professional in his preparation and work ethic, but I’m guessing Lovie did not want to deal with that scenario if things don’t go well this season or he wants to use a lot of zone schemes. Either way it’s a done deal.

  78. Brain Says:

People just don’t get it even after Lovie spells it all out for everyone.

Revis wasn’t cut because he didn’t fit the scheme. He was cut because he was slated to be paid $16 million.

L&L are all about value. Revis is not a value.[/quote]

THIS! Management has been completely transparent about the rationale behind the Revis move and it’s completely justifiable given how we spent the $16 million on multiple needs. Either our fanbase is as ignorant as the mainstream media and thinks we’re running cover 2 90% of the time, or they just don’t understand the concept of a salary cap.

In my opinion $16 million is acceptable value for Revis but I’d rather have 3 quality starters for the price of 1. Roster flexibility is very important and it makes it easier to draft for talent.
