Baker Mayfield Opted For No Glove On Past Wet Days

November 1st, 2026

So lots of Bucs fans expect Baker Mayfield to have a strong game this afternoon against the Falcons — with a wet ball, a healing dislocated throwing thumb and wearing a special glove.

Joe appreciates the optimism. But Joe also went back to the film.

The Bucs played in rain last season at home against the Slimy Saints and against the Panthers. Mayfield did not wear a glove on his throwing hand in those games.

Like many quarterbacks, Mayfield preferred (prefers?) the feel of his bare hand on the ball. Yes, Drew Brees and some other notable QBs wore a throwing glove successfully in wet conditions, but most don’t want it.

Joe is leery of glove-wearing Mayfield being able to carry the Bucs today, if necessary. And Joe also is skeptical that the offense can maul the Falcons on the ground like it did the Panthers a week ago.

The Bucs might need a heroic defensive effort to keep their season alive.

Captain Short Arms has small hands for a pro QB. The Bucs best chance to win today is counting on the fact the Falcons are equally inept. You’d have to insane to attend this in person.

It’s raining pretty heavily here in Sarasota, and moving north. A little lightning – which would totally f*up the game.

Tez could be a big weapon today. His light weight could be a big advantage in keeping his footing. Have him run some stop and go’s etc.

  3. Marine Buc Says:

Did Baker have a surgically repaired thumb on his throwing hand which required a “robo glove” in the past?

    I don’t think so…

I actually believe this rain is a godsend for the Bucs today.

    I am betting the under @ 44.5.

Defenses win championships. Nobody knows how Baker will hold up against wet conditions. And who are the Buccaneers? Are they what we saw in Carolina or are they what we saw at the start of the season?
I guess we’ll know more by the end of the game. GO BUCS

  5. JustVisiting Says:

If the thumb isn’t fully recovered, they shouldn’t play him.

This game has more subplots than GoT. If falcons force Baker to beat them, is he capable? If he isn’t, does it directly reflect on Licht’s incompetence for the Baker resigning? Is the front 7, specifically Anzalone/Trotter capable of stopping Bijan and corralling Pitts? Is the run game a fluke? Does AWJ improve the secondary or is he just a jag? Can Robinson put together another winning game plan? Will Bowles continue to let the D be aggressive or back to soft zone with AWJ in center field? Not to mention all the drama Baker brings with receipts and Robinson vs his old team…Will there be a fire sale after this game.

Tune in to the same bat-channel at the same bat-time to see if the dynamic dunces (Bowles/Licht) blow up the the team. BOOM! POW! BAM!

Which QB has more rain games and can grip the ball better? I’m guessing Baker might have a slight edge.

    Reasons to be optimistic:

*The combination of Zac Robinson and Kirk Cousins that managed to make Pitrs a thing and light up the scoreboard no longer exists.
*Zac Robinson may actually have value in telling Todd what the actual F### he saw that made it possible.
*The Falcons have the ability to play like crap on any given Sunday.
*The Baker revenge factor. Of course, that didn’t work too well in Week 2, did it?
*Trotter & Anzalone > Dennis & LAST YEAR Lavonte (had to emphasize. While true, still felt bad to say)

I am hoping Penix gets the yips as this is a homecoming for him. Strange how no one is hyping that as Cousins beat the Bucs last year when Bowles choked on the 3rdd and 28 loss. Penix is playing near his former home. To be honest, I would feel better if Penix got knocked out and Tua came in, he is so inept that even Bowles soft D will confuse him.

Ira is a good man – he says the Bucs need to finish 9-8 .. Lee says 8-9 would be enough to win NFC South – Steve holds his tongue about all this – if the Bucs lose today and then the expected losses at CHI DET BAL that is 9 losses never mind LAR – no team has made the playoffs with more than 9 losses – could the Bucs be the first ?

i’m a baker fan but the conditions and his unscratchable itch to force things might make for an ugly result. last week they played against a bad run d and a coordinator that was on his way out the door mid season, yea it was great but…..lets face it the two crushing rush games have been against marginal (at best) run defenses.

today is a bigger test of the bucs ability to impose their will and their running game against opponents….i’m looking forward to it and hope the o line has come back to life from a lifeless start. it makes all the difference to bucky and to baker.

anything can happen. i just hope it isnt cause baker is coughing up the ball repeatedly, glove or no glove…

Here comes the Excuses, already! The game hasn’t even been played yet!
