Gronk “Intrigued” By A Niners Trade For Chris Godwin

October 28th, 2026

Joe has seen and heard various reports about how much salary cap room the 49ers have available for the remainder of the 2026 season. It’s safe to say the Niners have about $35 million to spend.

San Francisco (6-1) is a veteran team that seems to understand it is in complete win-now mode.

And in the mind of former Bucs super tight end Rob Gronkowski, the Niners absolutely should be hungry to trade for a wide receiver because of injuries they’ve had at the position. And Joe will add that Gronk knows Mike Evans is fragile at 33 years old, and with 192 NFL games on his tires.

Gronk joined Up & Adams today and said he is “intrigued” by a short list of wide receiver trade targets shown to viewers on-screen. He liked them all as a fit for San Francisco and Chris Godwin was among the names.

Godwin is earning $22 million this year from the Bucs and he’s under contract for 2027, but there’s no guaranteed money in his Bucs deal for 2027. Per OverTheCap.com, the Bucs would have to pick up Godwin’s option for 2027 before the new league year starts in March.

Joe hates typing the following: Godwin has been ineffective in the 2026 Bucs offfense.

Who is to blame is unclear. Godwin is healthy. He’s caught a stunning 79 percent of his 34 targets. That’s a career high, and it leads the entire team! But Godwin only has 27 catches for 243 yards and no touchdowns.

Godwin deserves Buccaneers Ring of Honor status, but if the Bucs can dump his salary before the Nov. 10 trade deadline, they’ll save about $10 million this season (presumably cap dollars they can rollover) and avoid a brutal offseason decision.

Joe would not hesitate if a good offer was on the table from San Francisco.

Joe probably would feel differently if Mike Evans was still on the Bucs, but Joe has become a little numb to sentimentality in the wake of the Evans escape.

@joe explain to me why would Jason licht make any trade that will benefit the Bucs in the 2027 offseason when it’s no guarantee that he will be here to reap those decisions? Licht should be trying to get into win mode like the niners and become buyers right now.
Licht’s responsibility is the future (and present) of the team. He’s under contract through 2028 and, in Joe’s mind, has a current roster much better than its record. Joe’s not thinking Licht is in jeopardy of losing his job. –Joe

  2. Itzok Says:

Trade him , he deserves better, we don’t even use him. Stockpile picks

  3. ModHairKen Says:

Don’t do this unless the trade offer is shockingly good AND Godwin wishes to leave. He has earned that right.

  4. HomerSimpsonRocks Says:

Godwin is being wasted in Tampa under the Bowles/ZRob combo. It would be sad to see him go/happy to see him win another Super Bowl with ME13. I doubt the owners would want to PR hit though.

  5. SB~LV 🏈 Says:

    DO IT!
CG is nothing more than Sterling Shepard type of WR!

  6. HeavyE Says:

Wow, to lose ME13 & CG14, in back to back yrs, it just tells You, what kind of QB, that the Buccaneers have……SMH!

  7. ProffeserVonBrainStorm Says:

Godwin needs a real QB capable of passing him the ball. No such QB exists in Tampa.

Trade him immediately for draft capital. 2-5 is not a SB contender so what’s the difference.

This offense is absolutely putrid in terms of a passing attack.

Bowles thinks it’s 1952 and you can run the ball to the SB. He’s a guru.

  8. Leopold Stotch Says:

I hate how we’re not using him, or Egbuka tbh, whether Egbuka is hurt may have something, but this staff does not value Chris at all like in the past. It’s all Tez (which cool, he’s a good story, but he’s not a wr1) and freaking Cade Otton. We don’t use Durham like a redzone target at all. Kenny Gainwell is being overpaid and underused. We have weapons and do not use em. So as much as it pains me to say, we should trade him away, I’m sure he’ll fetch something decent. It’s clear that the staff is venturing away from some players. Mike was the catalyst.

  9. Jack Burton Mercer Says:

What will the niners give us for Robinson? What can we give them to take him off our hands?

  10. bucnjim Says:

Does he want to be traded? I think he deserves a say for his years of service. If he’d like to go to SF then by all means. The offense will not be changing for this year so he might want to be somewhere else.

  11. Jack Burton Mercer Says:

Godwin is nigh untouchable to me. Trade Kancey, Egbuka, Anzalone etc. Hell, trade Mayfield before trading CG.

  12. Kidfloflo Says:

The Bucs shouldn’t make any deals until AFTER this Sunday’s game! If we win, back to back division wins I might add, then we keep everybody that could help this team win a weak division, and who know Robinson might decide to throw the ball more than 8ft in the upcoming games and Godwin gets utilized…if we lose Sunday, then its a fire sale and get what u can for the new regime! Falcons game is pivotal

  13. can-we-get-rid-of-Licht-for-godsake? Says:

Trading Godwin would be waving the white flag – Licht will never wave the white flag – but Licht doesn’t realize this is the Alamo not Rorke’s Drift

  14. Rayjay Jay Says:

“He’s caught a stunning 79 percent of his 34 targets” Not too impressive when they are all screen passes!!

  15. pepsi Says:

man the offiense personnel is totally a mess. Evans gone, Godwin about to be gone after this season if not traded shortly, Egbuka not a number 1 and drafted way too high.. and Baker locked in for the future being paid as a legit elite QB.. thank god for the Oline. lots of mess for Licht to try and clean up

  16. BakerFan Says:

I just have a belief this offense is teetering on doing great things and Godwin is a must cog. I don’t believe he is going anywhere especially to 49ers, Licht should be peeved about Evans going there.

  17. Fanofdabucs Says:

Sunday will be the deciding factor in becoming a “seller” or not.

  18. Bobby M. Says:

Godwin isn’t as effective as he was with Evans out there. People can’t seem to connect those dots. He’s lost a step and doesn’t get the same separation as he once did, he can’t get over the top on the defense and he’s got nobody that opposing defenses view as a threat to do so. Defense is on top of all these guys constantly….they are all #2s. We don’t have a true number one. Might as well trade him for picks because I don’t see him being all that effective with us.

  19. 813bucboi Says:

nawl, i’d keep chris unless a team is offering a 2nd round pick

    GO BUCS!!!!

  20. Simple T Says:

    Keep Chris.
Do you really want EE to be the vet in the room ? He’s valuable for leadership and as a mentor and he’s plenty effective when targeted.

  21. OrlandoBucFan Says:

I’m all for it. I love Godwin, but his talent would be better used on a contending team and with a superior coaching staff. We need to start stockpiling draft capital.

  22. McBay Says:

Good grief. Bowles isn’t letting Godwin or anyone go, this collection of players with Todd is the team of destiny. Meanwhile, Godwin is more like a tight end in this offense and is great at it. Don’t mess the locker room and the other things. Stay the course, trust the process.

  23. Oxycondomns Says:

Godwin hasnt been good in a long time. Lot of posters on here are late to the game recognizing that. There is a history of that with posters on here also late to the game recognizing how bad Bowles and Trask are

  24. Oxycondomns Says:

and as recently as posters hyping up daniels

  25. Obvious Says:

    Yes. Absolutely.

  26. Buc1987 Says:

    Trade em!

  27. Oldbucsfan Says:

Idk how he’s being used; CG is dropping too many balls here lately. 2 weeks in a row now he’s dropped the first pass thrown to him, and they’re simple screens. If you can’t play consistent ball, then yes, you need to be traded, because you stay injured anyway, and when you do come back, you play like this.

  28. Saskbucs Says:

Oh it’s a QB problem now? Haha you guys never cease to amaze me.

Pretty sure Godwin was nearly pacing the league in yards and receptions a couple short years ago before he got hurt.

Who was the QB again? I think the QB threw for 4500 yards and 41 TDs.

Might it be an OC thing?

  29. Alvin Scissors Harper Says:

I would trade him. Chris has definitely lost a step.

  30. JimBobBuc Says:

Godwin can’t throw the ball to himself. He’s catching 79% of targets! What else can he do – maybe have Mariah kick Z-Rob’s and Baker’s a$$! Nothing is wrong with Chris, it’s about Z-Rob failing to use Chris like Coen did.

  31. Buccanstopit Says:

If they trade him to SF, I’d have to watch SF games after the Bucs 1:00 games.

  32. Confido75 Says:

Niners will chase him, but the Bucs will want to be free of his contract completely. I don’t see the niners spending that much on a WR that hasn’t been the same since his gruesome injury. I could be wrong. No telling how much ME is selling him to the FO.

  33. ocala Says:

Chris has been great as a Bucs player but he should be traded for his benefit and the Bucs

  34. 80sBucsfan Says:

the losingest GM of the cap era is Jason blue licht specials.

it’s a Bucs life that our local Joe Bucs fan would support him.

SMDH…gotta break this cycle of losing. Licht is only here bc of Tom Brady. Is there a Tom Brady on the roster? NO Is their a Tom Brady available in the coming off-season? NO.

Joe’s, are you sure you are Bucs fans? Or just catering to Jason to keep your press passes? SMDH.

Jason Licht SUCKS. 109 losses. The most losses of any GM in the cap ERA.

1 SB that was the perfect storm. Before and after that he has sucked.

    STOP SIMPING FOR LICHT. UGH!

  35. Smashsquatch Says:

Such a class act Godwin is. I wish all pros had his work ethic, professionalism, and maximized their talent as well as Chris has. But he’s underutilized here, nearing the end, and if the Bucs can pick up some extra draft capital they have to consider it. It would also open the door for Emeka, Ted & Tez to assert themselves.

  36. drdneast Says:

Why would anyone want to trade for an often injured possibly hobbled WR who makes 22 million a year who drops the first pass thrown to him in every game?
